City police to make ‘walk-throughs’ at local bars

By BRYCE MARTIN Pioneer Editor The City of Bowman Police Department will begin making unscheduled compliance checks in area bars Jan. 1 to promote safety at places that serve alcohol.

The department currently has two officers on patrol during the night, which permits time for them to check on those establishments and its patrons.

After a string of recent assaults at some of the city’s bars, Police Chief Chuck Headley said the checks were a good idea.

Police officers responded to a call regarding a man wielding a knife outside Windy’s last weekend, according to Headley. When officers arrived on

scene, the man complied but was “extremely intoxicated,” as Headley indicated.

Several fistfights at area bars have also occurred within the last couple weeks.

The department is attempting to prevent such incidents by showing more of a presence within the establishments through its compliance checks, which Headley refers to as “walk-throughs.”

“It will give the opportunity for the police to see if there’s somebody past the point of intoxication ... (and) call that to the attention of the bar to at least stop serving the individual,” he said.

Rebecca Cummins, owner of Windy’s Bar, said she thinks it could be a good idea.

“If it keeps my customers

safe that are trying to enjoy themselves in a comfortable environment then it could be a good thing,” Cummins said.

Another way the local police want to increase safety in bars is by implementing a volunteer-based training program for local servers to help identify fake identification, overly drunk individuals and how to mitigate unsafe situations with patrons.

Headley said he would like to begin offering that training to local businesses also within the coming year.

The training could be completed through the department or online, for a $25 fee, and Headley said it would be a good idea for Bowman City Commissioners to stipulate mandatory training for those applying for

City gets $96k bill for sewer repair

By BRYCE MARTIN Pioneer Editor Estimates for the city’s sewer repair in Bowman City Park earlier this month were provided to the city this week.

Bowman City Commission President Lyn James said when she first saw the gaping hole that was dug in the park when the pipe was being repaired, she expected the price tag to be exorbinant, possibly near $300,000.

While it was not that much, the estimate came in at around $96,000, which James still said is a lot, but was relieved.

Montana-Dakota Utilities has not yet provided estimates for their expenses in relocating a gas main and power pole in the park, James said.

The costs for the sewer repair do not put the city overbudget as James said the commissioners would need to adjust its budget to accomodate for the added expense, pulling funds from other places that were underbudget.

To avoid a similiar situation

in the future, Jon Brosz with Brosz Inc. and Bill Mason, the city’s road and water superindent, said during the commissioners’ regular meeting Dec. 16 that they were looking into brining in a crew to scope out

the existing, potentially “problematic” pipes within the city with a camera. Brosz said he would secure estimates for such a project and the commission would discuss it at a later date.

The training helps alcoholserving establishments receive an adjustment on their insurance if they have employees that receive the training.

“Some of the bars I’ve talked to in the past, they like the idea,” Headley said.

‘Thank you for care, kindness’ It has been a year now since our car accident on Hwy 85, at the curve in the road six miles east of Amidon on Dec. 19, 2013. From the very first few minutes, until now, this community has been there for us. First responders arrived within minutes of the accident, from what we can piece together. They were efficient, considerate, even patient with me when I screamed out in pain at them. Various other members of our community rose to the occasion and went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that our daughter, Maija, would receive good care when Michelle and I were unable to help her, and that she would have a caring, familiar face looking down at her and a hand to

hold in the ambulance ride to Bismarck and during her first hours in the hospital. Friends visited, took care of important details regarding the care of our belongings and our dog— just loved us. Some have provided rides, short and long. There have been so many expressions of concern, well-wishing, and prayers for healing. The generous financial gifts have helped immensely as well. It all has been absolutely overwhelming to us.

Thank you, greater Bowman area, for seeing us through this traumatic time in our lives. We will be forever grateful to God for you all!

N.D. Outdoors When I think of what “good ice fishing” means, I have to approach it from two different time sets.

In one set, I think of myself as a young kid in LaMoure in the 1980s, ice fishing with my dad. We’d spend our time sitting on 5-gallon buckets and even straw bales, fighting the wind to land a few perch at Seefeldt Dam. Or we’d make what seemed like a long one-hour trek north to Lake Ashtabula. In my eyes, the perch fishing there was the best ever. There was no limit, and we’d fill a bucket or so and spend the dark cold night filleting perch after our excursion.

To me, winter fishing couldn’t have gotten much better. But it has.

To say a lot has changed doesn’t do justice to how much North Dakota’s fishing opportunities have changed since I was a kid. We now have twice as many fishing waters as we did back then, and most of them are producing quality catches of walleye, pike or perch.

That’s the second time set I’ve thought about – what I know today as

But last month when the November 2014 issue of North Dakota OUTDOORS magazine came out, it contained a feature that reminded me there is a third time set to consider, one that goes back 30 years prior to the 1980s, when my dad was a kid.

The article tells us that icefishing really didn’t start catching on in North Dakota until the 1950s and early1960s.

“When the water gets ‘hard’ enough to support the weight of a car and a fish house, North Dakota’s growing army of hardy fishermen take to the lakes and streams,” wrote John Hewston in North Dakota OUTDOORS in 1959. “Although winter fishing has been an established sport of considerable magnitude for many years in neighboring states in the lakes region, it is still just catching on in this prairie state.”

Greg Power, North Dakota Game and Fish Department fisheries chief, said when reservoirs such as Froelich, Short Creek and Sweet Briar were constructed in late 1950s and early 1960s, fishing opportunities increased.

and the best livestock in the world. And the highlight to many of us was watching that little cowgirl from North Dakota, whom we had watched through high school and beyond; win a go-round in the barrel racing. Brittany (Fleck) Diaz made us proud!

This is a young lady I saw riding horse in Disrud’s arena in the winter, when many were bundled up in front of the TV. Riding a horse raised in North Dakota, bought for a few hundred dollars, and trained by herself, she earned

Bob White stopped in to see Joann one day. Tuesday was the birthday party of the month. The Rhame Rhancherettes came. Birthdays in December are Doris Fischer and Eunice Ruggles. The Wagoneers entertained which was enjoyed by all. Junior sang a song that Lowell Jones had written “Christmas in Our Town.” It was very touching. Lowell was the brother of Doris Fischer. Many of us remembered him in his younger days as he sang a lot then. The ladies who served the lunch were Doris Bucholz, Maxine Miller, Betty McGee, and Theresa McGee. They served cookies and lefse. Pam Hestekin had made the lefse.

Karen Miller was also there and had her twin granddaughters with her.

We have a new resident, Ina Mae Heick.

Tuesday we also made cinnamon ornaments for the tree. Wednesday, evening some of the resident went out to see all the Christmas lights here in town. On Thursday,

we frosted cookies. There were quite a few frosting with different colors.

Friday afternoon was the big resident/staff Christmas party. Roger Walter played for us. Santa made his appearance. He was a jolly old Santa.

Gifts were passed out. Everyone had a real good time. The music was so good so a couple just had to dance. We really want to thank the jolly staff for such a nice and eventful party. All of the residents received a nice gift from the staff members. What useful and pretty gifts for everyone!

Friday afternoon after the party, John and Willie took on Bud and Pam in a wild whist game.

Barb Schaff came down and we played a couple games of Skip Bo. On Saturday Pam came up and took my things to the Frosty Frolic here in town. Marlene came in and Barbara came down from Dickinson. Pam and John came and picked me up after dinner. I got to see quite a few people that I hadn’t seen form some time. It’s always nice to get out and see people I hadn’t seen in a while. Afterwards the five of us went out for supper at Windy’s. The food was very good and it didn’t take long for them to get it ready.

We were quite impressed.

Saturday morning in the Activity Room, Debbie, Alda and I started making little houses.

We started to flue the crackers to the cartons. It didn’t work as well as I wanted it to, so I used my glue fun instead.

Seemed to work better than glue, but maybe next week when we want to continue and frost them, they’ll have fallen apart. Hope not.

I haven’t been to the finals for several years. I may go again someday, but every year it brings back great memories.

One of my favorite stories is the year Shirley and I went with Doug. Doug was one of the Bowman guys that bought tickets when the finals first moved to Vegas from Oklahoma City.

They had great seats for a number of years. Stock contractors Cervi and Vold were right in front of us. As

we walked in with our beer and popcorn about a half hour before the grand entry, Doug pointed out a seat three or four rows above ours. An aisle seat.

“This is where Ben Johnson sits,” Doug explained. “Every year I visit with him and get his autograph.”

I’m thinking to myself, “Yeah, right. Like you know one of the greatest actors of our time. Yeah, right.”

About ten minutes later, Doug looked over his shoulder and saw Ben sit down.

“Well, there’s old Ben now,”

he exclaimed!

We got up and went up the few steps to Ben Johnson.

I was embarrassed to be following Doug up the steps to bother an actor who was just waiting to enjoy the rodeo.

As we got near, Doug stuck out his hand and said, “Hello Ben!” And Ben Johnson smiled from ear to ear and exclaimed back, “Hello Doug!”

And some day I will tell you about my pool match with world champion bronc rider Dan Mortenson.

On Sunday afternoon the Scranton FBLA came up to the Activity Room. They brought pictures of older movie stars. They wanted to know if we recognized any of them as what movies they played in. We knew some of them. I did pretty well. I recognized Elvis Presley. Each

one of the student sat at a table with some of the residents. McKenna Wagner and Devin Kromarek sat at our table with Joann, Doris, Eunice and I. We even discussed what years different presidents were in. Lynn Brown is their FBLA leader. I didn’t know the names of the other

kids, all nice kids.

Terry Heick and some of his family came to see Ina Mae Heick on Sunday.

I ran across the hall to chat with Ada Heinrich. We have so much in common and she is a great friend. She’ll also be 91 in January, 5 months younger than me.

■■ Eligible North Dakota firefighters, first responders encouraged to apply for federal grants

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp announced that new federal grants will be available for eligible for firefighters and first responders to help them update their equipment and improve firefighter and community safety.

These funds will enable fire houses in North Dakota to receive support their operations, which are particularly important for the 96 percent of first responders in North Dakota who are volunteers.

“Our first responders in North Dakota are often the first on the scene in life-ordeath situations, putting their lives on the line every day for their communities – and they do it voluntarily,” said Heitkamp. “Their invaluable service and their sacrifice is something we cannot take lightly – and as the daughter of a volunteer firefighter in growing up in Mantador, I know I never will. That’s why I’ve made getting first responders the tools they need to prepare, succeed and

Individuals interested in taking the game warden exam scheduled for Dec. 29 are reminded to register by submitting an online application through the North Dakota State Job Openings website.

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and have a bachelor’s degree. Other requirements are a current North Dakota peace officer license, or eligibility for a license, and a valid driver’s license. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills in communications and writing, and must not have a record of any felony convictions.

Game wardens enforce game and fish laws and related regulations in an assigned district and other locations as determined by the department.

Wardens normally work alone under varied conditions, at all hours of the day, night and weekends. In addition to law enforcement duties, wardens assist in the areas of public relations, education programs, and hunter and boat safety education.

Beginning this month, property owners across North Dakota will receive the new statements in their mailboxes.

“Years of statement inconsistencies across the state led the Interim Taxation Committee to seek a more uniform statement,” said Rauschenberger.

“Creating a consistent appearance and basic layout of all North Dakota property tax statements will make it easier for taxpayers to understand.”

The Interim Taxation Committee, which is made up of state senators and representatives, directed the Office of State Tax Commissioner to develop a more uniform property tax statement. Lead by the Office of State Tax Commissioner, a working group was formed to examine the various county property tax statements and develop a new format that incorporated the best aspects from each county’s statement.

County reacts to Powder River training expansion

By BRYCE MARTIN Pioneer Editor Having military bombers frequent the skies only 500 feet above Bowman County is not an easy thing to swallow and Bowman County Commissioners are not giving in without a fight.

The county commissioners relayed their concerns over the proposed Powder River Training Complex expansion in a conference call with a legislative assistant of Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., during the board’s regular meeting Dec. 16.

During the approximately one-hour call, several of the commissioners directed specific questions and distresses to Eric Bursch, Heitkamp’s military affairs adviser, in an effort to give a voice to Bowman County.

Rodney Schaaf, a retired pilot and president of the Bowman Airport Authority, joined commissioners on the call as he explained that sometimes in the eyes of Washington, D.C., “it seems like our voice isn’t heard out here.”

Schaaf has been an opponent of several of the U.S. Airforce’s restrictions as they shaped their expansion plan since 2006.

While Schaaf said he supports the military’s need for training, the proposed plan proves unsavory for Bowman County and its effects would be widespread.

Of chief concern for Schaaf and several of the commissioners was the low altitude at which the military’s B-1 bombers could fly: 500 feet above ground.

“Our issue down here is the 500 foot elevation,” Commissioner Lynn Brackel told Bursch. “I’m wondering why we have a blanket coverage of that 500 foot elevation, five days a week, all year long, when we know it’s not going to (be) used.”

Bursch said he awaited clarification on that point from the Air Force.

After public hearings on the expansion project, the Air Force released its final environmental impact statement last month in which the Air Force laid out its alternatives to the original plan, but indicated that they favor Modification A. That modification would allow aircraft to travel at harrowingly low altitudes over Bowman County.

The U.S. Air Force had a minimum of 30 days from the release of the report on Nov. 28 to make a final decision on its modification and submit that to the Federal Aviation Authority for their approval.

Bursch said during the call that he expects the Air Force to announce its decision Dec. 29 and that the FAA would render their verdict no sooner than Feb. 15. The FAA’s decision is final.

In an attempt to amass any remaining concerns over the project, Bursch setup the conference call with the commissioners so Heitkamp would receive the concerns of those impacted. Bursch said she would then draft a formal letter to the U.S. Air Force for their consideration.

airmen) would be issued prior to any activation of the airspace for training.

Schaaf said that is nowhere near adequate.

“In the 502-page impact

release, which I read every sentence, they keep throwing this 240 day operations at us,” Schaaf told Bursch. “With weekends off, that’s going to be used year-round.”

Along with the amount of time the airspace would be utilized, the system to notify aircrafts that the space is in use is abysmal.

“It looks good on paper, but it won’t work,” he said.

Bursch indicated that there is a special use airspace website that will have the schedule for the use of the PRTC. Pilots would have to reach 6,500 feet above ground to talk to air traffic controllers and receive indication that the airspace was in use, which Schaaf said most do not usually do on a given day.

Schaaf referred to the expansion plans as a “dog and pony show” as he explained that representatives from the county, himself included, previously voiced the same concerns during the public comment period but, when the impact statement was released, nothing was changed.

“I got the impression that it was just shoved down our throats — we’re going to take that 500 feet anyway,” he said.

Schaaf laid out several reccomendations for Heitkamp to relay to the Air Force including moving the low-fly zone east 50 miles, or put in an area over Wall, S.D. If that’s not feasible, Schaaf explained they could simply raise the 500foot restriction and “90 percent of the problem would be resolved.” Otherwise, the Air Force could change the schedule of the 500-foot flights to predetermined, rotating days each week or install a remote transmitter in aircrafts.

Installation of an advanced remote transmitter could take a year from approval, said Bursch, but the Air Force wouldn’t utilize the low space over Bowman until radars were installed.

Another solution would be to give a direct contact number for Ellsworth Air Force Base’s operations center so pilots could see in real-time if the airspace is active with bombers.

“A big problem with this whole process, and I told the Air Force this before, they haven’t done a really good job to make sure that impacted folks can understand part of the strategy,” Bursch admitted to commissioners.

The turmoil of North Dakota’s oil Continental Resources begins drawback of oil rigs in Bowman County

By BRYCE MARTIN Pioneer Editor Several oil companies with producing wells in North Dakota have found themselves in a conundrum with this month’s announcement of crude oil prices falling below $56 per barrel.

The effect from the “staggeringly” low prices has its good point, namely bringing much cheaper prices to the gas pumps around the country, but it could have a devastating effect on North Dakota’s economic surge.

Oil industry leaders, however, have cautioned that it is just a cyclical movement in the production of oil and would not have lasting effects on the state’s economy.

The price of Brent crude— sweet light crude oil that serves as a major benchmark price for purchases of oil worldwide—in June was up around $115 per barrel. It fell to nearly half that by the middle of this month, hovering below $56 as of Tuesday, according to Bloomberg.

There is a plethora of reasons

for the drop in crude oil prices.

The high prices of oil since the early part of the decade were the result of conflicts in oil producing countries such as Libya and the soaring consumption of oil oversees, such as in China. Oil production was not able to meet the demand and prices became greatly inflated.

North Dakota has since spurred the country’s oil production over the last decade and oil supply became much higher than the demand. That was combined with easing ten-

sions in foreign conflict and the need for oil in other countries slowly fading in part to respective weakening economies.

But now the problem is heading close to home.

Of the total 1,558 oil rigs on file, only 530 are currently producing. Bowman County has produced 681,007 barrels of oil since August.

Bowman County’s current amount of active rigs stands at only three – two owned by Denbury Onshore LLC and one owned by Continental Re-

sources. Continental’s rig began drilling Dec. 8, but Continental Resources recently began a drawback of its rigs within the county.

A message left by the Pioneer to Continental’s headquarters in Oklahoma was not returned by the time this article went to print. Both the Rhame and Baker field offices for Continental were not able to comment.

The drawback of active rigs signals a loss of local jobs and could have further negative effects on the local economy.

Christmas in Bowman means choral joy

Spanning oil and cattle boom and bust, and music from Elvis to Taylor Swift, there has been one constant in Bowman since 1959: The Bowman Community Chorus delivers a memorable Christmas concert.

“I think it’s the love of people getting together, being able to bring their talent, whatever it is, and going for it,” explains Orpha Bowman, a 52-year participant in the chorus.

Orpha’s husband, Ron, a for-

mer music teacher in the Bowman school system, has been a member along with Orpha all that time. Ron directed the chorus from 1970, until this year, when he passed the baton to Will Charbonneau, current music teacher for the Scranton schools.

“It’s been very pleasing and gratifying” Ron says, describing what the community accomplishes with its chorus year in and year out. He says “come one, come all” ads are published each year seeking chorus members.

“I hold my breath wondering how many are going to come.

But I don’t think we’ve ever had less than 40 members – sometimes as many as 60, or 65. The support from our community has been exceptional,” he says.

Some chorus members come from communities outside Bowman, including the distant communities of Buffalo and Ladner, S.D., and Rhame, Scranton and Amidon, to name a few.

dora Musical stage. The chorus has performed on the occasions of the U.S. bicentennial, and the North Dakota and Bowman centennials.

This year, the Bowman Chorus Christmas Concert features two performances, taking place in the local Lutheran Church, on the first Sunday in December.

For the program of musical pieces, Charbonneau says sacred pieces will be featured along with blues and gospel styles, novelty music, and a Nigerian carol, added to expose the singers to something different.

“I want to expose them to other music out there,” Charbonneau says. “It’s something they’re not used to, but I think they’ll enjoy it.” The Agnus Dei cantata will be presented with a full orchestral accompaniment and the second half of the concert will be accompanied by Donna Marie Dettmann, member of the chorus for more than 35 years.

A key to the continuity and success of the Bowman chorus and Christmas concert is how ordinary local folks lift their musical voices to make it happen.

Kelly Olson, whose husband is a local school principal, counts herself among them.

“I think everybody who comes loves to sing, and everybody says this kicks off their Christmas season,” Olson says. At rehearsals, Olson says singers listen intently to director guidance, and focus on learning new music measure by measure, soprano, alto, tenor and bass.

“Everybody’s really intent on working hard and getting it right, and when you get all the

parts together, it’s just an incredible sound,” Olson says.

Some 595 performers have sung in the Bowman Chorus Christmas Concert since 1959. It is expected the 600 mark will be reached this year. Forty-six local people belong to the chorus’ special 25-year club, some at the 50-year participation level.

School age students have always been a big part in the chorus’ makeup. Kat Perkins, star of “The Voice” television program, sang in the Bowman chorus in 1998, as a Scranton High School student.

Ron Bowman says sharing food has always been an important part of rehearsal attendance, and it is an important part of the Christmas concert experience. He adds that free will offerings are the admission price to the concert. These collections, along with great support from local businesses and generous memorial gifts, help support school music programs in Bowman, Scranton, and Buffalo, S.D., and college and music camp scholarships for music students. Ron says the chorus is deeply grateful for a “most generous” recent donation from Continental Resources.

The concert also features a prelude and intermission performance by the Saxy Brass, a local instrumental group. Saxy Brass, a fixture at the concert since 2000, will also accompany the chorus on one number; it is directed by Lynn Brackel, another former music teacher in Bowman.

A Soldier with the North Dakota Army National Guard, Pvt. Justin Germann of Bowman has completed Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. His training was completed at Fort Jackson, S.C. and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Prior to his training, Germann was assigned to the Recruit Training Company in Bismarck, learning Basic Combat Training skills. Olson family shares story of devastating car crash that left daughter, 11, paralyzed

Ron and Michelle Olson said they forgive the man that left their 11-year-old daughter paraplegic and changed each of their lives.

But Michelle admits it is a constant, daily battle.

One year ago to the day, the couple and their daughter, Maija, loaded into their minivan and started out on a drive to Dickinson. Ron, pastor at United Methodist Church in Bowman, drove the family as Michelle took a nap in the passenger’s seat and Maija played I Spy with My Little Eye in the back.

It was to be an uneventful trip. Michelle was going to get a new pair of eyeglasses and, while it was cold and breezy outside, the roads were relatively free of ice and snow.

Their car slowed through the speed limits in the town of Amidon and continued their drive six miles east before they reached a snowplow traveling in the opposite lane on Highway 85.

“I opened my eyes a little bit and I thought, oh, here comes a snow plow. Oh, there’s a vehicle behind it. Good, everybody’s lights are on so we’ll all see each other,” Michelle said.

Then the unbelievable occurred and in the blink of an eye the Olsons’ lives changed forever.

Michelle awoke from her nap and found herself under the windshield.

“I heard this loud bang and sort of didn’t think anything of it, but then sort of woke up and wondered why I was under the windshield,” she said. “I thought I had slid down while I was sleeping.”

But she had not. The vehicle following behind the snowplow attempted to pass it, did not see the Olson’s minivan because of the blowing snow it created and head-on collided into their vehicle.

Michelle said she looked over at Ron and he kept asking how she was but that he could not help her. Michelle said he seemed distraught that he could not help them.

“One of the things that (Ron) said was, ‘Look at that light, it’s

so beautiful,’” she said. “I felt like he was drifting away kind of, like I wanted to grab onto him and pull him back.”

Ron said he does not remember much after that except for greeting his neighbor.

“I looked out the front window and I couldn’t see the front of the car, it was all crunched up. I looked over at Michelle and she had blood streaming from her face, but she

Michelle and Ron were transported to Dickinson by ambulance.

It would be weeks before Ron and Michelle were back at Maija’s side.

Ron said he looked out his driver’s side door and saw his next-door neighbor, Slope County Sheriff Deputy Frank Eberle, and Ron said hello to him as if the two were at morning coffee.

After that, Ron passed out.

Maija remained awake for most of the incident.

“I remember while we were waiting for our rescue Maija said, ‘Mommy, I can’t feel my legs, I can’t move my legs,” Michelle said.

Crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extract Michelle from the twisted steel. Emergency

Maija sat at a table with the couple, who had moved to Bowman in 2011. She played with some handmade bracelets that she found in her coat pocket and sipped from a water-filled mug that said “I Love Jesus” on its side with a big, red heart.

It was faith that brought the family together during their difficult time. The three were separated immediately following the incident, which made the situation worse.

When Maija arrived in Bowman, doctors examined her and she was sent by ambulance to Bismarck. Chris Peterson, a nurse practitioner at Southwest Healthcare Services, traveled with her. It meant a lot to Ron

in Bismarck until they were allowed in and stayed overnight with Maija, along with Peterson. They waited there until Ron and Michelle’s son arrived in Bismarck.

Ron was treated in Dickinson for a severe injury to his leg.

Doctors placed an external fixation around his leg and closed it with screws. At the end of that operation, doctors were not able to stabilize his blood and the amount he was bleeding. They examined his heart and discovered the leaflets on his heart’s aortic valve had ruptured off and were hemorrhaging.

He was immediately airlifted to Bismarck and underwent emergency open-heart surgery.

The next morning, he was resting fine in the intensive care unit.

Michelle had broken ribs and several internal injuries. She said that one of her medical records described that both her and Ron’s lungs had collapsed, though she did not know if that was true. It also took several weeks for health care professionals to discover Michelle’s broken wrist.

Maija’s injuries were the most severe and most heartbreaking for the family.

She had a perforated bowel and underwent emergency surgery in Dickinson. She also had a cut under her eye from flying window glass.

The lasting injury, however, was to Maija’s spinal cord.

She had an ASIA-A spinal cord injury at level T10, located right above her belly button.

Doctors put a rod in her back to stabilize it with bolts on either side. They used adult sized bolts so she could grow into them.

But the prognosis was heart wrenching: doctors revealed Maija would likely never walk again. The once lively, young girl would now be confined to a wheelchair.

The three spent months recovering in hospital rooms and finally returned home March 10. They were eagerly welcomed home by Ron’s congregation, community members and the family’s dog, a Labradoodle named Bubbles.

Ron said several months after the accident he beat himself up for “all the stuff I could have done right and that.”

He admitted that was not a healthy thing to do.

Instead, Ron and Michelle turned to the one thing that had not changed since the accident: their faith, but returning to regular life was not an option—their lives were now too different.

“Imagine an 11-year-old who is independent in the home and, all of a sudden, she can’t even get herself a glass of water,” Michelle said. “It’s very different; it’s angering sometimes.”

Still, after all the heartache that was caused, Ron and Michelle said they have forgiven the man that sat behind the

wheel of the car that hit them that morning in December.

The man was driving without a license, without registration, without insurance and had unlicensed plates borrowed from another vehicle.

“We’ve just been overwhelmed with all the caring,” Michelle said. “All those people doing all those things for us—it’s so precious. There’s no way you can pay back some of that stuff. We’re just kind of looking for ways to pay it forward.”

“That’s all we can do is pay it forward,” Ron agreed.

Ultimately, it was their faith that navigated them through the struggle.

“I think if I didn’t have faith, I would really be struggling with why and (be) angry and bitter,” Ron said.

“I don’t see how (people) do it without the Lord,” Michelle added.

Michelle warned others never to pass a snowplow in winter for the very reason he crashed into them—they shoot up a spray and you can’t see.

It is still a daily struggle for the three, even a year after the accident.

Ron lost his eyesight in his left eye, his leg is sore everyday and he has a tender scar on his abdomen. Michelle said she is still recovering from a brain injury as she did not have airbags on the passenger side and hit the dashboard hard.

For Maija, it is learning how to live life without the use of her legs. While she still gets to play with her friends and enjoy some of the hobbies she used to do prior to the accident, physical therapy as become a large part of her life.

Maija’s hands frequently become sore and stiff because she does all of her transferring with her hands, arms and shoulders, according to Michelle, so she often visits Shannon Bowman, occupational therapist at Southwest Healthcare. Maija said she also has the help of Lacey Juelfs and Jennifer Jahner as her physical therapists.

Ron said modern technology could show some promise for future operations to help Maija regain use of her legs, but right now the family is praying and relying on faith for most of their healing.

A Gingerbread Christmas

By LINDA BROOKS For the Pioneer Long ago (1250-1300AD), the word “gingerbread” meant elaborate, gaudy and superfluous architectural ornamentation. We still see this kind of design style on some houses today but we may see it as quaint and homey.

Today the word “gingerbread” makes us think of something quite different. Gingerbread dough contains ginger and molasses, giving the finished product a rich brown color. Cakes, bars and cookies can all be called “gingerbread” as they are all made with gingerbread seasonings. If cookies, we see the dough rolled out and cut in fanciful shapes which are frosted and decorated. Gingerbread men and women can be seen in all kinds of things – from ornaments to fabric to dishes to gift wrap to jewelry. The gingerbread design is commonly seen around the Christmas holidays.

When my children were

small I was part of a Christmas craft and bake sale. We used a gingerbread motif for our sale, cutting out gingers from brown paper bags and cardboard and decorating them to be used to indicate what we were selling and the price of the items.

These gingers have traveled with me for many years and are part of my gingerbread Christmas this year.

If you visited my house you would be greeted by 4 gingers in my decorated window boxes.

I added greens and red, glittering picks and stars to complete the look.

All through the house you will see gingerbreads used in a variety of ways. The living room has a white, frosty tree decorated with red, white and green baubles and gingerbread boy and girl ornaments.

Two gingerbread houses, (with roofs that open to hold Christmas cards), nestle among greens and baubles in the large glass cubes that my Christmas tree sits on.

The bathroom displays gin-

gerbread fabric at the window and my chandelier is decked out with red and green bead strings and red and white dotted baubles with ginger colored stars hanging below. Gingers line the shelves, holding hands, very happy to be part of the Christmas festivities. And gingerbread rugs keep feet toasty on cold December days.

The dining room table has a white tablecloth with gingerbread cutouts at every place setting and wee gingers peek out from a potted plant. Red, green and white dishes, napkins and a centerpiece complete the Christmas tablescaping.

The kitchen’s high top table is done in red, white and green and the red and silver tree is surrounded by mini gingerbreads, they love to join hands and make any design merry.

Red and green napkins are rolled in mini red and green wreath napkin holders. The dishes are Red Ruby Glass – a family treasure.

With another year’s holiday season comes another festive performance by local youth during the Bowman United Methodist Church’s Live Nativity.

All are welcome Dec. 21 to witness several members of Bowman’s younger generation as they tell the story of the birth of Jesus Christ.

The live show begins at 5:30 p.m. on the grounds of the Bowman United Methodist Church. A freewill-offering soup dinner will begin at 5 p.m. to benefit the church’s mission projects.

GAME AND FISH NEWS ■■ Coyote Catalog Available for Hunters, Landowners

The Coyote Catalog, a statewide effort connecting coyote hunters and trappers with landowners who want fewer coyotes in their areas, has been reopened by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

“I encourage landowners, especially farmers and ranchers who have problems with coyote depredation, to sign up for the Coyote Catalog,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “Hunting and trapping are valuable tools in managing these predators.”

This past season, 74 landowners signed up for the Coyote Catalog, a more than 50 percent increase over the previous year. Nearly 900 hunters and trappers also signed up.

NDDA officials estimate livestock producers in North Dakota lost more than $1 million last year to coyotes.

At the same time, coyotes are a popu-

lar furbearer species for hunters and trappers.

“This can be a good way for hunters and trappers to locate new places to go,” said Game and Fish Director Terry Steinwand. “We’ve also had some positive feedback from landowners as well.”

Goehring and Steinwand said the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services should be the first contact for landowners experiencing coyote depredation of livestock.

Landowners can sign up on the NDDA website at www.nd.gov/ndda/ coyote-catalog. Required information includes county and contact information.

Hunters and trappers can sign up at the NDGF website, gf.nd.gov.

Throughout the winter, hunters or trappers will receive information on participating landowners, and they can then contact landowners to make arrangements.

Anyone who registered for the Coy-

ote Catalog in the past must register again to activate their names on the database.

The Coyote Catalog will remain active through March 31, 2015.

Students interested in taking a hunter education class in 2015 should visit the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website at gf.nd.gov for a statewide list of courses. Many classes will be added over the next several weeks, and the rest will be added throughout the year as they are finalized.

To register, click on the online services tab, and “online course enrollment” under the hunter education heading. Classes are listed by city, and

can also be sorted by start date. To register for a class, click on “enroll” next to the specific class, and follow the simple instructions. Personal information is required.

Those who do not have access to the Internet and want to sign up for a class can call the hunter education program in Bismarck at 701-3286615.

Individuals interested in receiving a notice by email when each hunter education class is added can click on the “subscribe to news, email and text alerts” link found below the news section on the department’s home page.

Check the box labeled “hunter education class notification” under the education program updates.

State law requires anyone born after December 31, 1961 to pass a certified hunter education course to hunt in the state. Hunter education is mandatory for youth who are turning 12 years old, and children can take the class at age 11.

New Business: A. DPI Approval for Reconfiguration: discussion was held.

Peterson moved seconded by Fischer to file an application for reconfiguration with the Department of Public Instruction from a K-8 / 9-12 setting to a K-6 / 7-12 setting. All yes, motion carried.

II.Roll Call – Jeremiah Erickson, Scott Erickson, Andy Adkisson - meeting lacked a quorum. Miguel Rivera, Cody Shepherd, Jeremey Stotts, Dennis Walser, Margie Russ.

III.BNSF – Representatives from BNSF were present to discuss the problems on the trains blocking the tracks, and the engines running throughout the night. Scott stated that this has been going on for many years and would like to see a long term solution to these problems. Rhame has only one crossing, the next nearest crossing is three miles. Mr. Rivera stated that there is a need for more communication. Jeremiah suggested this is a group effort and we need to keep track of problems and report them to BNSF. IV.Water/Sewer to building – Brent – The sewer from the City building flows into Brent’s building. This is grandfathered in. Lynn Heath suggested splitting the sewer and making Brent’s building separate. This will be a spring project. Dennis suggested we do nothing until Brent completes the building.

Jeremiah would like an estimate so we can get funds set aside to complete this project. Lynn estimated the cost around $7,500. It is possible for this estimate to be less.

V.Lynn Heath stated that Bartlett and West has been unresponsive on getting the SW Water project completed. $52k is still due to Lynn. Jeremiah will call Bartlett and West and they will have a meeting to get this problem resolved.

Dennis will also contact one of the engineers at Bartlett and West to see if we can get this resolved. The council thanked Lynn for all his work and for his willingness to come to Rhame for emergencies and for maintenance.

VI.Dennis brought up the toolbox for Jeremey. Wants the City to let Jeremey purchase for $1. This can’t be done.

Dennis feels that Jeremey needs to be paid for the use of Jeremey’s equipment.

VII.Approve October 12, 2014 minutes – Tabled due to lack of quorum.

Bowman County Airport Authority board members, Bob Morland and Rod Schaff, met to provide an update on the new airport. Gary Brennan, from Brosz Engineering, was also present.

At a recent meeting of the Bowman County Airport Authority, board members passed a resolution stating that the county may retain ownership of the property, pending the acceptance of the FAA, and retain seven acres for wetland restoration. A recent broker provided an opinion of the value, which includes 150 acres and 3 buildings, at $512,000 plus, that the county could purchase. Currently five hangers are privately owned, which is excluded from the quote. The goal of the airport authority is to have all of the property remain as a package deal. The airport authority owns a 60X60 hanger, the terminal and another building. The district program manager, located in Bismarck, is in support of the resolution. Brennan has submitted correspondence requesting final approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to the above stated plan. An update followed on the Powder River Training area. The comment was made that it is difficult to suppress this issue without congressional support.

With no further business to discuss Brackel made a motion at 3:58 PM to adjourn the meeting, with Steiner seconding the motion, and upon a vote the motion as carried unanimously.

Chairman Braaten called the meeting to order at 9:02 AM. Commissioner Bowman absent as he was attending a North Dakota State Legislative in-service.

Chairman Braaten asked for corrections or additions to the agenda.

Brackel made a motion to approve as presented, with Abrahamson seconding the motion, and upon a vote, the motion was carried unanimously.

The following vouchers were approved by a motion made by Brackel, with Steiner seconding the motion, and upon a vote, the motion was carried unanimously.

Steiner made a motion to approve $500.00 for the holiday employee appreciation party. Abrahamson seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried.

At 10:00 AM Bowman County State’s Attorney Jim Gion and Bowman County Deputy State’s Attorney, Stephanie Pretzer, met to discuss her appointment for Bowman County State’s Attorney, which Pretzer will take office on January 1, 2015, as Bowman County’s full time state’s attorney. Gion stated that he will be available for training during the transition period. Brackel made a motion to approve Pretzer working the month of December, receiving a salary of $4,000. Abrahamson seconded the motion. A roll call vote was taken with all members voting aye. Motion carried.

Steiner made a motion to approve the minutes from November 18, 2014, with Brackel seconding the motion, and upon a vote, the motion was carried unanimously.

Bowman County Highway Superintendent, Neil Hofland, and Gary Brennan, from Brosz Engineering, provided updates. Discussion was held on county federal aid road future projects. The county is projecting an estimate of $6,000,000 for future grading, surfacing and incidentals on the Circle K Road South, # CMC 064, on the 2014-2015 Federal Aid Road Maintenance Certification.
