INDUSTRIAL PARK MOVES FORWARD County completes final step for project, buys Wokal property By BRYCE MARTIN

Pioneer Editor bmartin@countrymedia.net Bowman will have its industrial park. The Bowman County Board of Commissioners approved the final piece necessary to move forward on the planned Bowman Gateway Industrial Park this week, ending the approval process on a project that has been called controversial and opposed

by several city and county residents. Commissioners approved during their regular meeting Tuesday the purchase of 46 acres of property adjacent to the former airport and owned by the Wokal family. The purchase, with a “sticker price” of about $237,000, was deemed necessary for rail access to the industrial park, a component that would make it more attractive to potential buyers. Each of the commissioners

voted to approve the purchase with the exception of Commissioner Pine Abrahamson, who said he did not understand the purchase price or the county purchasing private property. The biggest hurdle prior to the vote was discussion over a buffer that would protect nearby landowners from views of the industrial park. Commissioner Lynn Brackel said during discussion that he would not vote to approve the purchase if there was not something in the motion to guarantee such a buffer would be created. Brackel suggested that a 300-

Despite snow and ice, Santa makes it to town for Christmas Stroll It was a much warmer evening than last year for the Bowman Area Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Stroll. Despite the snow and ice on the ground Dec. 14, people were seen joyfully shopping around Bowman’s Main Street businesses, enjoying live music from Saxxy Brass, and cuddling together on a hay ride through town. The biggest attraction, as it is each year, was getting a photo with Old Saint Nick himself at the Bowman Regional Public Library. More than 130 photos were taken of Santa and the wishful children hoping he’ll bring them presents on Christmas. (By Bryce Martin/Pioneer)

A Rhame man pleaded not guilty last week to three felony charges, including two for gross sexual imposition, after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing. Jovani Parra, 19, is now headed to a felony jury trial on two Class-A felony counts of gross sexual imposition and one Class-C felony charge of luring minors by computer. Judge Rhonda Ehlis accepted the not guilty plea Dec. 10 after Parra waived a preliminary hearing that was set for the same day. Parra was initially scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 8, but his attorney was unavailable. It was then rescheduled for Nov. 12 at which time Parra Parra was unavailable, according to court documents. Ehlis set a pretrial conference for Feb. 9 and a trial date for Feb. 24. Parra has retained Robert Bolinske of Bismarck as counsel, according to Southwest Judicial District Court records. According to an affidavit in support of complaint filed with the court in August, Parra’s alleged victim was 14 years old and had admitted to police that she had sexual intercourse with the man on two separate occasions. It was stated in the affidavit that the alleged victim approached police with her parents to report the incident. The female informed police that she had
