Friends remember Sense as devoted mother, friend

Ashley Marie Sense moved to Bowman when she was a teenager. In the short amount of time that she lived in the community, she formed strong friendships, gave birth to a of daughter and established a life for herself.

That life was tragically cut , short last weekend. She was only 20 years old.

“All she wanted was to feel loved,” said Angie Abrahamson, a close friend. That, Abrahamson said, was one of the biggest things she will remember about Sense.

Abrahamson owns JaBBR’s e in Bowman together with her husband, Justin, and hired Sense as a server about six years ago, when she was only 15 years old.

As a server, Sense met a lot of people—many of whom found her to be endearing, usually wearing a smile on her face and boasting a warm personality.

That’s how Abrahamson remembered her, too.

“For somebody to have the work ethic that she had, you don’t see that nowadays,” she said. “It made her special.”

Sense also lived with the Abrahamsons for a short while.

She went through a lot of “ups and downs” in her lifetime, according to Abrahamson.

“She had become a good friend to us—part of our family,” she added.

Condolences and memories of Sense were widely shared on Facebook. People remembered her as a special friend and truly devoted mother. Sense gave birth to a daughter, Adalynn, in September 2012.

“You are my angel,” wrote Wanda Arre above a photo of the two on her Facebook page.

“It doesn’t feel real.”

Prayers for Sense and her family were posted on social

“Her smile will never be forgotten; she smiled with her eyes,” wrote Ronda Miller on the Pioneer’s Facebook page.

Miller said Sense loved her daughter and loved being a mother.

“She was an angel on earth and now she has her wings,” Miller said.

Lauren Hoffman of Spearfish, S.D., described Sense as selfless.

“I loved the way she always went out of her way to make sure everyone had what they needed before she ever worried about herself,” Hoffmann wrote. “You were an amazing mother, sister and auntie.”

“May Ashley’s legacy live in the eyes of her daughter ... and in the spirit of her stepsisters and all of her family, loved ones and friends,” wrote Amanda Kirschenman. “She is missed dearly. Rest in peace, young lady.”

Funeral services for Sense were held at 11 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Bowman Lutheran Church.

Pastor Charles Swanson and Pastor Mark Nygard were scheduled to officiate with

burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery. Visitation was held the previous day at the Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Home Chapel in Bowman.

Sense traveled alone late Halloween night, driving from Bowman to Baker, Mont., where her mother, Becky Sense, resides.

She drove her 2008 Mercury Milan westbound on Highway 12. The night was cold and visibility was unremarkable. According to the report released Nov. 1 by the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Sense’s vehicle was found at rest near the Little Missouri River in Marmarth, just a short distance away from the bridge.

The details contained within the report spelled out the tragedy.

According to the report, Sense’s vehicle “failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway” around 11 p.m. Oct. 31 and subsequently entered the north ditch on the east side of the Little Missouri Bridge. The vehicle drove through a barbed wire fence and began to rotate clockwise, the report said.

The vehicle then struck a tree, rolled and came to rest near the river.

The Highway Patrol and Slope County Sheriff’s Office

responded to the scene.

Law enforcement also indicated in the report that Sense was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. She was fully ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.

Sense’s name was released to the media Sunday after her family was notified.

While the cause of the accident has not yet been determined, many people familiar with that particular stretch of Highway 12 said that deer frequently cross the road. With limited visibility at that time of night, one could easily conclude the possibility of Sense having to swerve to avoid collision with a deer or another large animal crossing the road.

Though, nothing has been officially released.

Source water spill reported in Bowman County The North Dakota Dept. of Health (NDDoH) was notified last week of a 400 barrel spill of water used for enhanced oil recovery within the Bowman County.

The spill occured at a well owned by Denbury Onshore approximately six miles south of Marmarth.

The spill reached an unnamed drainage.

This water is higher in dissolved solids and minerals than fresh water.

The spill occurred Oct. 29 as a result of a leak in the pipeline.

The NDDoH responded and said it will work with the company on remediation plans.

This marks the second spill in Bowman County for the second half of the year.

This & That

By JOSEPHINE KACZMARKEK Dick and Rita Fischer from Rapid came to visit Doris Fischer Monday morning.

Well things are getting back to normal again. All except the time change that is. Although we have lost a few residents.

Our last loss was Agnes Rafferty. Things seem like they happen so fast. Today, Monday they had a family service here in the chapel which gave most of us a chance to attend. There will also be a family service on Thursday afternoon for Larry Huckins, from Amidon.

There was quite a bit of activity here over the weekend.

There was the Fling Thing at the Four Seasons Sunday. I had quite a few of my things there , so my daughter Rita and husband Loran Schmuial and daughter Tashal came and did it for me as I was unable to do it. Pam was going to be gone so she wouldn’t be able to do it for me. It was a lot of work setting up and taking it back down. I don’t think that the crowd was as big as usual, too many other things going

on. It was a beautiful day, about 60 degrees.

Rita, Loran, and Tashal left about one on Monday to Milbank, South Dakota. Milbank is on Highway twelve about ten miles from the Minnesota line so it was quite a drive to. I sure did appreciate them coming this far to help me.

We celebrated the 65th Wedding Anniversary of Kenny and Garnet Rajewsky. We enjoyed cake and ice cream and wished them many more happy years together.

We had a Halloween Party of Friday afternoon. We had three good looking clowns that kept the action going. Roger Walter played so there was some dancing which looked like fun. Pam, Rita, Loran, and Tashael were here and to in on the fun. Ruth Line, Nola Robinson, and Agnes Kitzan stopped in to see me. Marlene was here Thursday and spent the day. John Horvey stopped in too and visited with Rita, they had quite a “gab session.”

They are 1969 classmates and graduated and hadn’t seen each other since, so there was a lot of ground to cover.

Graduated in Scranton.

Pam and John were in Bismarck over the weekend and met Trever and Jayme and the little girls, Temperence (4 ½) and Tyla (3), from Fargo.

They brought them home for a few days until hunting season starts. Pam brought them up here on Tuesday as the little girls just had to see Grandma Jo.

N.D. Outdoors Growing up in rural North Dakota, I don’t think my parents would argue that I likely ate as many grouse, duck, partridge and venison meals as pizza.

In LaMoure, where at the time “fast food” was rabbit or pronghorn, a frozen pizza or rare evening at the Big Cone was a treat.

So when I hear of big city delicacies of roast duck or sushi, my mind recreates the sight and smell of deep-fried bullhead eggs. Along the way, I’ve dined on an array of wild game preparations, from delicacies like lemon-pepper broiled walleye, to more obscure offerings such as sandhill crane stir-fry, and the tradition of fried deer heart, liver and onions.

When it comes to fish and game cooking, the beauty is in the eye – or the fork – of the beholder.

Similar to dining out, we each have our own preferences when it comes to wild game cuisine. It’s at this time

of year, as the deer season gets underway, that the typical hunter who struggles to boil water, is magically (in their own mind, anyway) transformed into the Julia Child of venison preparation.

First off, you can’t make a fillet mignon out of ground chuck. If you don’t take care of the meat in the field, no amount of seasoning or any style of preparation will overcome the damage done. Take care of your kill from the field to the fork.

Beyond properly cleaning the meat, cooling it down quickly, keeping it cool and processing it efficiently are important. Along with that, proper packaging and storage will ensure the meat stays fresh longer.

Arm-chair deer processors will fry pounds of back straps as work their way through carcasses. When the work is done, the end result is an array of products, from breakfast sausage, deer roasts and burger, to venison brats,

By DOUG LEIER summer sausage and stew meat. In fact, I recall one year in college when a wrapped meat package was marked as venison bacon.

We never did fry it up as bacon, but it gives credence to the endless possibilities of fish and wild game cooking. Odds are, if you enjoy traditional food such as stir-fry, you’ll be able to modify the recipe to include the bounties of nature.

One final note. In addition to the limited dining out choices in LaMoure 30 years ago, we also didn’t have access to the information the modern age of technology provides. I’d venture to guess that for every cut of meat or species of fish or game, somebody has tried a unique way to prepare or cook it, and they probably have a recipe or even an instruction video online somewhere if you want to look for new ideas.

However, similar to other internet cautions, you may want to stop and think before you decide pickled grouse wings might be an option.

Hat Tips

By DEAN MEYER Hello, We have a neighbor who is a teamster. Now, he is not like a Democrat Teamster. He is a teamster that drives horses.

He gives our grandkids rides with a nice dun team of quarter cross horses. And this year he even mowed the ditches with a five foot horse drawn mower!

And that got me to thining about Clyde.

Clyde was a huge Percheron cross that Linseth owned. He was blacker than the inside of a cow and stood about seventeen hands tall. Maybe a little better. I couldn’t stand the sight of him just standing in

the pen. I had to drive him.

You know, like a painter who can’t stand looking at a blank canvas.

Trouble was, I knew very little about breaking a team.

If you haven’t already figured that out. I had Lee, our neighbor come down to help me. We called Lee for lots of help over the years. I had been driving Clyde and another pretty much unbroken horse around the corral. Being the fixer upper that I am, I had put a pole on an old wagon and figured I had a pretty good outfit put together.

Lawrence was a construction worker that was staying at our place at the time.

He was part of a road crew working in the area. And an old family friend. He had just come home from work and had cleaned up to head into Joe’s Bar. Joe had a sign that advertised “Free Beer Tomorrow” hung behind the bar.

Lawrence had seen the sign the day before and didn’t realize that the same sign would be there that night.

Say Anything By the time most of you read this the votes in North Dakota’s 2014 election will have been counted, and the winners declared, but I wanted to use this column to remark on something that happened just before the election which reflects notso-well on someone who will be on North Dakota’s ballot in the future.

For more than a year now, since a bipartisan majority in the Legislature passed the bill which put the measure on the statewide ballot, North Dakota has been having a debate about Measure 1.

The state’s two Republican members of the state’s federal delegation – Senator John Hoeven and Rep. Kevin Cramer – went on the record with their views on the measure early on in the debate (both endorsed it). But in a testament to just how lackadaisical North Dakota’s reporters are, Senator Heidi Heitkamp wasn’t put on the record with an explicit position on the measure.

Maybe that’s a product of Heitkamp actively avoiding her critics in the media who might ask her that sort of a tough question once in a while, but I

digress.

Eventually, at the zero hour and with election day looming, Heitkamp did go on the record.

The candidate who upset Republican Rick Berg in 2012 with a textbook character assassination campaign turned in a vicious op/ed about Measure 1. I’m sure those of you who read it were shocked to learn that a liberal Democrat feels someone who disagrees with her position is “extreme.”

But Heitkamp position on the measure was less interesting than her timing in making that position public. The arguments for and against Measure 1 were all made by the time Heitkamp jumped into the debate – ad nauseum for some, I’m sure – and I doubt very many voters were undecided at that point.

Which is why Heitkamp’s posturing was so ridiculous.

Heitkamp works very hard to manufacture an “aw shucks” persona with her politics, but underneath that facade is a shrewd and calculating political mind.

I think Heitkamp attacked Measure 1 because she was convinced it was going to lose.

Anyway, Lee helped me adjust the harness. Kelly mounted up on Zip and was going to snub the team up to prevent any runaway. Lawrence stood under the shade of a tree with a beer in his hand, going to watch this deal before he headed for town. Clyde, the Percheron, was a little antsy.

He was throwing his head and prancing around. The other horse didn’t seem to pay him much never mind.

We got that team hooked up to the wagon and I told Lee to jump on. Lee just looked at me and grunted. “I never trusted a prancer”, he said as he declined the maiden voyage of my outfit.

The first few steps seemed to go alright. And then that wagon box started to rattle a little. Clyde started to throw a fit and the wagon rattled a little more. The off horse got excited and started to lunge in the harness. Zip, our snubbing horse, blew up and started to buck with Kelly. Kelly pitched the rope in the air and had his hands full. Like usual, I was

on my own.

Clyde and his partner ignored my screams and headed out of the yard. I was bounding around that wagon like a bb in a box and trying to pull on the lines. Things were happening pretty fast and I was pulling on the right line with all my mite. We made a circle in front of the house, tore through the garden and scarred an oak tree with a tire swing on it.

By then, I had lost all control, and was pretty much just pulling for my own exercise.

We ran by Lawrence and caused him to throw his beer in the air and run for the house.

The horses were in full stride when we struck the side of Lawrence’s pickup. And this one wasn’t a glancing blow.

The pole struck the drivers side door right in the center. I can now tell you from experience that a when a team hits the side of a four-wheel drive pickup, the team will stop.

Much like my mule driving deal, I flew through the air

and landed atop the team. My patched up harness was pretty much demolished. My wagon was wrecked. We had broken a wheel on the oak tree. Lawrence’s pickup had a couple thousand dollars damage. He had spilled his beer. Kelly had ridden Zip to a standstill.

I crawled off the top of the team and walked shakily over to Lee, who was still standing by the cake house steps.

The whole deal had taken about ten seconds. Lee lit up a Pall Mall, shook his head, and said, “I never trusted a prancer”.

That reminds me of what the auctioneer said at the horse sale. This ranch had a pretty darn nice horse in the ring. But the horse was a little plain looking and not bringing the dollars he deserved. Lynn was begging for bids and commented, “He’s a little plain, but dancing girls don’t make the best cooks!”

I mentioned to Shirley that they don’t need to and she hit me!

That’s important for North Dakotans. One of the reasons why voters in this state cast long-time incumbents out of office in previous election cycles - I’m looking at you

Dorgan, Conrad, and Pomeroy - was that voters stopped buying what they were selling. The erstwhile “Team North Dakota” was very good at campaigning on a right-of-center platform here in North Dakota while governing to the left-of-center in Washington DC.

I think Heitkamp was probably right (you, future reader, will no more about that than I). The SAB/Valley News Live polling released last week showed Measure 1 losing, and while as a matter of fact and honesty I don’t find the arguments against Measure 1 to be persuasive, politically speaking I think they’ve been effective.

I think the ugly campaign against Measure 1 has raised enough doubt even in the minds of solidly pro-life North Dakota voters that the measure will likely fail.

Heitkamp sees this too, which is why she felt she could speak out.

But what a cowardly way to go about doing it, waiting until the last moment to decide which side of the fence it’s most politically advantageous to stand on.

Whatever your position on Measure 1, Heitkamp’s political maneuvering speaks volumes about her qualities as a leader.

Leaders who are confident in their positions, and proud of them, speak plainly and openly

■■ Railway backlog update

Rep. Kevin Cramer announced this week that BNSF Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) have publicly filed updated weekly status reports on the backlog in grain shipments.

The figures from BNSF show a total of 3,704 past due rail cars in North Dakota averaging 14.1 days late as of October 17, compared to the report the previous week which indicated 3,706 past due cars were averaging 12.3 days late. The CP report shows a total of 1,801 open requests in North Dakota with an average age of 3.77 weeks. The previous report showed 1,771 open requests with an average age of 3.57 weeks.

deploy extra patrols, including many located in the state’s most rural counties. Officials are notifying drivers throughout the state, but especially in rural areas and smaller communities, that November is a good time to get in the habit of buckling up, every trip, every time.

The greater prevalence of light trucks among rural traffic increases the need for seat belt education and enforcement in rural areas, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation. The most recent available data suggests that pickup drivers are the group most associated with low seat belt use and a high rate of fatalities due to ejection during a crash.

Pickups have some of the highest fatality rates in single vehicle rollover crashes, the most common type of fatal crash in North Dakota. the vehicle’s propensity to roll and the low rate of seat belt use among pickup occupants.

A 2014 observation survey reported last month by the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute found the lowest rates of seat belt use in North Dakota were among male pickup occupants on secondary or local roadways.

“The state’s seat belt laws are enforced equally for all vehicles throughout the year. We’re trained to be even-handed. But law enforcement officers are very aware of the higher number of pickup drivers and passengers who may not be buckled up,” said Ransom County Sheriff Darren Benneweis.

“Getting a ticket might remind them to buckle up,” he added.

The Strom Center at Dickinson State University (DSU) and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host a veteran entrepreneur event at 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10 at the Strom Center, 1679 6th Ave West, in Dickinson near the Prairie Hills Mall.

The purpose of the event is to promote business-to-business relationships between established veteran entrepreneurs and aspiring veteran entrepreneurs. The DSU Concert Band will play several patriotic songs and the event includes light refreshments.

Through generous donations from DSU alumni Jerome and Rosie Strom, along with local businesses, The Strom Center at DSU supports entrepreneurs and local communities.

The center provides confidential, professional services to entrepreneurs and community groups and is a hub for information, training and events.

■■ Eligible North Dakota firefighters, first responders encouraged to apply for federal grants

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp announced that new federal grants will be available for eligible for firefighters and first responders to help them update their equipment and improve firefighter and community safety.

These funds will enable fire houses in North Dakota to receive support their operations, which are particularly important for the 96 percent of first responders in North Dakota who are volunteers.

“Our first responders in North Dakota are often the first on the scene in life-ordeath situations, putting their lives on the line every day for their communities – and they do it voluntarily,” said Heitkamp. “Their invaluable service and their sacrifice is something we cannot take lightly – and as the daughter of a volunteer firefighter in growing up in Mantador, I know I never will. That’s why I’ve made getting first responders the tools they need to prepare, succeed and survive their missions a top priority.

OBITUARIES Richard Septon

Richard D. Septon, 68, of Spearfish, SD, passed away on October 31, 2014 at the Hospice House in Rapid City, SD. Memorial Services for Richard were at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014 at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Pastor Mark Nygard officiated with burial to be held in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, S.D., on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 at 1 p.m.

Richard was born Aug. 15, 1946 in Baker, Mont., son of Martin and Pat Septon. His school years were from 1st grade to senior year at Bowman High School. He was a Boy Scout from 1958-1963 and was an Explorer scout from 19621964. He attended college at Wapheton School of Science with a 2-year degree in transmission mechanics. He served in the United States Army from Oct. 1966 to Sept. 1969. When he returned from the service he worked for Mann’s Automotive in Bowman, N.D. from 1970 to 1976. Richard was united in marriage to Rita Stinchfield on April 16th 1971 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman.

Residing in the Bowman area where he worked for Scranton Equity from 1976 to 1977. Then started working for Nordberg Chevrolet from 1977 to 2001.

In 2001 they moved to Minot, ND where he was an auto tech for Minot Chrysler Center. In 2004 they moved to Cheyenne, WY and he worked for Aamco Transmission for 15 months.

He then moved to Lowes Distribution Center as a machine operator. Richard was active in Bowman Lions Chapter for 19 years, he was president from 1984 to 1985, he was Minot Lions Chapter for two years, he served on the Bowman Water Board for nine years, he was active in the Bowman Anglers Association. A member of the Post 48 Bowman American legion, life member of the National Rifle Association, member of the Cheyenne Regulators Gun and Shooting Club. Richard enjoyed many things in his life. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, golfing, reading, cooking, and entertaining his family. Richard was very mild mannered man. His limits were rarely reached. He loved his wife Rita and was proud of his children and grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Rita of Spearfish, his daughter Tricia Fowler (Aaron) of Belle Fourche, S.D., son Kenneth of Minot, N.D., and daughter Kathleen Conklin (Patrick) of Omaha, Neb., three grandchildren Jacey Fowler, Jayden and Addison Conklin, and two step-grandchildren Jonathan and Destiny Conklin, mother Patricia Septon of Bowman, brothers Jim (Cooky) of Bowman and Lynn Septon (Renee) of Williston, N.D., sister Lola Hovda (Adrian) of Fargo, N.D., sister in-law Betty Bondeson of Spearfish, brother in-law Dan Stinchfield (Coleen) of Elisa-

Larry Huckins Larry Lee Huckins, 73, of Amidon, N.D., passed away at Southwest Healthcare in Bowman, N.D., Oct. 26, 2014, where he had been hospitalized for nearly three years due to a stroke. Funeral Services for Larry will be on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 at 1 p.m. at the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Center Chapel. Pastor Ron Olson will officiate with burial to follow in the Lebanon Lutheran Cemetery, rural Amidon.

Larry was born in Broadus, Mont., Sept. 10, 1941 to Clifford and Alyne Huckins. He graduated from Broadus High School in 1959 where he played football, basketball and baseball. He also played baseball for the Miles City American Legion under legendary coach Bob Nees, and had committed to play baseball for Dickinson State University before he was injured in a ranching accident, ending his playing career.

Larry had a lifelong dedication to education and was a high school administrator and coach in Montana and North Dakota. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from DSU, a Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University., and an Education Specialist Degree from Tri-State University. Agnes K. Rafferty, 90, of Bowman, N.D., passed away on Oct. 31, 2014 at the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Center in Bowman. Funeral Services were at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014 at the Bowman Lutheran Church in Bowman.

Pastor Charles Swanson officiated with burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery. There was a Family and Friends Service on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014 at 3 p.m. at the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Chapel in Bowman. Agnes Aasen was born on Oct. 17, 1924, the

daughter of Magnus and Marie Aasen. She was educated in the local area and also received her teaching certificate from Dickinson. Agnes taught school for a few years. On July 7, 1958, Agnes was united in marriage to Leo Rafferty at the Grand River Lutheran Church south of Bowman. Leo worked for the Dell Webb Corporation and his work led him and Agnes to Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Houston. Leo also built houses and Agnes would show and sell them. In the late 1970’s they started Leo’s Paint and Body which they owned and operated until retiring and moving back to Bowman. Agnes was a wonderful lady who enjoyed her time visiting with her family and putting together puzzles. She was also a member of the Southwest Retired Teachers Association. She will be deeply missed. She is survived by her son Pat (LeAnne) Rafferty, grandchildren; Lindsey (Daniel) Grooms and Dusty (Amanda) Rafferty, sisters-inlaw, Dorothy Aasen and Linda Aasen and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; Magnus and Marie, husband; Leo, brothers; Kaare, Olaf, Kenneth and Roy Aasen, sisters; Hilda Johnson, Arlene Johnson, Maxine Paulson and Helen Peters and two child siblings.

Bowman dentist gets honor for service to profession, community

Patrick Kelly, a dentist Prairie Dental in Bowman, was recently inducted as a fellow of the International College of Dentists at its 85th Annual Convocation in San Antonio, Texas.

An honorary organization for the recognition of outstanding and meritorious service to the profession and community, the college presented Kelly with a membership plaque, a gold lapel pin and a gold key symbolic to this fellowship for conspicuous service rendered in the art and science of dentistry.

In an impressive cap and gown ceremony, 280 dentists from the United States were inducted into the college at this year’s ceremony Oct. 10, witnessed by hundreds of members and guests.

Kelly has been practicing dentistry in Bowman since 1984. He purchased the practice from Malcom Stewart.

A unique community gem, The School of Promise is a very special preschool in Bowman that is dedicated to the early education of eligible preschool children. The old saying “It takes a village to raise a child,” has never been more true that through the mission of the School of Promise; a non-profit organization operated solely on donations.

The School of Promise started in the summer of 1972, when a small group of interested people met in Bowman. The group consisted of parents, interested friends and social service professionals. Their primary concern was the unmet social and educational needs of the “exceptional” child in southwestern North Dakota. The School of Promise officially opened in September of 1972, meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall, with Mrs. Mickky Swenson being the first teacher. She was later assisted

by Mrs. Laura Caron of Scranton. The children at this time represented the counties of Adams, Bowman and Slope. In desperate need for more space, a generous donation was made

by Mrs. Ann Dilse to construct the building that is still used today.

Children eligible to attend the School of Promise must complete a developmental screening and be found eligible for special education services or be determined “at-risk.” The school educates a diverse group of students each year with a variety of handicaps, intellectual, speech or physical delays. Depending on a child’s specific needs, there are a variety of skills worked on with students including fine & gross motor skills, listening and following directions, thinking, readiness, social, speech, and language skills.

Today, the School of Promise is still dedicated to the early education of eligible preschool children. The focus is on the whole child and to try and prepare them for the classroom in

the public school. The goal is that they experience success, which will build self-confidence and self-esteem that all people need in life. The School of Promise has always been gifted with amazingly talented teachers and therapists that give children and their families an individual education plan. These plans are filled with tools, techniques, learning approaches, and the support needed to help children learn and grow successfully.

The School of Promise is unique in so many ways: - Amazingly this awesome opportunity for children is and has been funded by donations for over 40 years from generous community members.

- There is no financial cost to families for their eligible child to attend. Parents are only asked to help with the Annual Auction Fundraiser.

- The School is affiliated with the Bowman Co. School District and West River Special Education Unit, whom assist with technical support and resources.

- Very few rural communities even have this type of special school available to children.

Currently there are 18 children attending The School of Promise in two different groups. The teachers are Kristi Krebsbach, Connie Mason and

Speech Therapist Brenda Osendorf. The volunteer board members include: Justin Abrahamson, Brenda Palczewski, Bob Morland, Don Nordgen, Codi West, Robin Welch, Meredith Bagley, and Camie Janikowski.

“We are all greatly appreciative for the donations and support from the community to the School of Promise throughout the years. For decades, we have been able to help hundreds of kids have a first-class empowering education at this school,” said Justin Abrahamson, School of Promise Board President.

Volunteers are needed throughout the year for various things such as lawn/yard work, kitchen help, substitute teaching, snow removal, board members, and other random needs that come up. Amidon native helps with war efforts after ceasefire

After the firing stops during the conflict of war there is still work to do. That’s the experience Amidon native Benedict Benz had after he joined the forces in 1954. Though the conflict in the Korean War was nearing its end, the army was still needed for support around the world.

Enlisting as a 24 year old farmer, Benz joined the military because he anticipated being drafted anyway.

After penning his name on the dotted line, Benz left Amidon for Fargo. His train left at 5:30 a.m. and after making stops at every town along the way, he arrived in Fargo close to midnight that evening.

He would do his basic training in Missouri before heading to Fort Sam Houston in Texas.

He was assigned to Ft. Sam Houston after a placement test recommended him for Medic duty.

From there he was deployed to Germany where the military used him and his crew wherever they were needed.

“We could go anywhere anybody needed, even civilians,” Benz said.

Some of the more important roles Benz had was while other soldiers were trying to clean up the areas that had been battle grounds just a few years prior.

When teams would survey the land for buried land mines, he was on site in case of an accident, or another emergency situation.

needed. He recalls one story in which a motorcycle accident occurred just outside where he the medics were located.

Veteran’s Day at Bowman County Schools There will be a Bowman County High School Veteran’s Day Program at 11 a.m.

Nov. 10 at Solberg Gymnasium.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

There will be reserved seating on the floor for all veterans.

The accident involved civilians and the military medics responded.

Though World War II had been over for almost a decade, Benz said relations between the soldiers and the German citizens were something less than comfortable.

“They were a little impartial to us,” Benz said. “But they found out [that] we’ve done some good whenever they needed help.”

The assistance is something that Benz said the military hoped would mend the tattered relations between the United States and Germany.

Overall Benz said there were about 120 ambulances in his outfit. Though they were based in Germany, Benz said they could be sent anywhere assistance was needed.

He also said a great part of his experience was the friend-

ships he gained.

“You make some good buddies,” Benz said.

He still keeps in contact with them to this day.

Benz made it to the rank of Corporal, and when he was finishing up his required service time his superior approached him with something in his hand. What was in his hand?

His Sergeant stripes.

All he had to do was re-enlist and he would have been promoted. He declined the opportunity, and according to Benz, went home to be with ‘sweetheart.’

Benz’s experience is one that many overlook when reading about the history of war and conflict. Fences need mending and hearts need soothing, and the efforts Benz and his fellow troops made during a post war era are a display of how actions can say a lot more than words.

Everything you need to know about the general election results

By BRYCE MARTIN Pioneer Editor Bowman County saw several important races on their election ballots Nov. 4 for the 2014 General Election.

While most of the candidates for county offices went unopposed, it was a big year for write-in candidates, specifically in the Bowman County Sheriff and Bowman County State’s Attorney races.

While Sheriff Rory Teigen retains his longtime spot as sheriff, he was opposed by a write-in candidate that campaigned around the county.

Jason Dodge, who opposed Teigen, captured only 172 write-in votes, compared to Teigen’s winning 1,222 votes.

Dodge did not return a request for comment.

It was a bittersweet night for Democrat Stephanie Pretzer, who ran for the District 39 State Senate seat, but was defeated by incumbent Sen. Bill Bowman. Though, she ended up victorious in another race, for Bowman County State’s Attorney.

Bowman County saw strong turnout this election round, with 59.15 percent of its population heading to the polls. The county’s four precincts— Rhame, Scranton, the city of Bowman and rural Bowman County residents—cast a total of 2,502 votes. Of that total, the most were collected from the city of Bowman, which had an important measure to consider reserved only for those that reside within its limits.

Voters oppose city sales tax measure

The only ballot measure facing the city of Bowman was voted down in this week’s general election, which could put the status of a new community recreation center on hold indefinitely.

Bowman City Measure 1, which if approved would have increased city sales tax by 1 percent for the operation of an expanded Rouzie Recreation Complex, failed to amass enough support in the Nov. 4 election, with 64.85 percent— or 452 votes—of city residents voting against the measure.

Only 245 votes, or 35.15 percent, voted in support of passing the measure.

“We know that good things do not always happen right away. This outcome and the feedback we receive from the residents of Bowman will help us move forward with this project so it enhances our quality of life and is welcomed by our community,” Chanell Walby told the Pioneer on Wednesday. Walby is the director of the Bowman Parks and Recreation Dept. and championed for community support of the

measure.

When news broke of the measure’s defeat, people took to Facebook to express their disappointment.

Jennifer Jahner of Bowman agreed.

“This is disheartening to me,” Jahner wrote. “Anyone who wants to hear the need and benefit of an indoor pool for therapy reasons can sure contact me before the next time this is on the ballot.”

Walby and Friends of the Bowman Parks and Recreation Department, a group created to assist with creation of the center, presented Bowman city commissioners earlier this year with a draft of the ballot issue that called for the increase to the city’s existing six percent sales tax. The commissioners gave them their blessing to place it on the ballot.

The department was to allocate the collected funds from the increased tax to help operating costs of the expanded recreation center.

Without the increased sales tax, the project would be disbanded, Walby told commissioners during the meeting.

“We believe the rec center expansion project will be an attraction for families to move to the Bowman area. When families move here, so do potential employees,” Walby said earlier this year. The recreation center expansion undoubtedly is a project that’s rooted in

strengthening and supporting the community.

Now it is a project that could be shelved.

As Teran Doerr, executive director of the Bowman County Development Corp., explained, a new community recreation center would advocate a greater quality of life and help to recruit additional workers and residents to the area.

Despite the sales tax being only applicable to the city of Bowman, many people from the immediate, surrounding areas and beyond travel to the city on a daily basis to purchase goods and services. The tax would have directly affected them, but they could not vote on the measure unless they resided within city limits.

“I wish it could be different,” said Lyn James, Bowman City Commission president.

The city of Bowman has a home rule charter, which allows the board to offer up for a public vote items such as increasing sales tax. To change the charter would take a vote of the people, but James said she felt uncomfortable making amendments to the charter.

Commission dictated what items can and cannot be taxed.

Services generally are not subject to tax, but there includes many exceptions. Groceries, for the most part, also are not taxed. Still, there exist more exceptions. Sales tax is not collected on gas, water, prescription medication, automobiles, school related expenses, tickets for entertainment, fertilizer sold to farmers or farm machinery and equipment.

There is a cap on sales tax that means no person can pay more than $25 in tax. So, for a large-dollar transaction, the tax cannot exceed $25.

“I believe that we would still be well within an average across the state if we raised it another one percent,” Doerr said. “As a community, we want to be careful not to [overtax] our citizens; I think that’s important to always consider that.”

Bowman’s current city sales tax amounts to six percent, placed on certain goods and services within city limits. Five percent of that is set as a base by the state. The other one percent is made available to Southwest Healthcare Services in Bowman, earmarked for community health care.

Pretzer loses Senate race, but don’t count her out

You may count her down, but not out.

Stephanie Pretzer may not have defeated longtime incumbent Sen. Bill Bowman in the race for the District 39 State Senate seat, but she said she’s ready to accept a new position, as Bowman County State’s Attorney.

The 26-year-old Scranton native received 1,790 total votes from the 24 precincts that make up District 39, which includes Bowman, straight up to Watford City. It’s one of North Dakota’s largest congressional districts.

But Pretzer, a Democrat, knew the race was a long shot.

While she said she hoped to win, her role as Bowman’s opponent was meant more to spur his activity within the State Senate. Bowman, a Republican, received nearly three quarters of the District 39 vote with 5,133 votes.

In that role, Pretzer said she succeeded.

“I think many people follow-

ing my race and my message will take an interest in the upcoming legislative session and I don’t think that’s happened in a long time,” she said. “There are a lot more people this session ready to hold our incumbents accountable.”

Bowman’s increased campaign presence, which was more than Pretzer said she ever saw from him, wouldn’t have happened if he didn’t have an opponent in this race, she said.

“I don’t think he would have made these campaign promises for things that western North Dakota really needs” had he ran unopposed, Pretzer said.

Several weeks prior to the election, Bowman appeared with two of his colleagues—Sen. Rich Wardner, R-Dickinson, and Rep. David Rust, R-Tioga—to lend congressional support to a proposal that would change the way oil and gas production and extraction tax revenue would be distributed. That change would positively affect western North Dakota communities.

Pretzer wanted to get Bow-

man “to try a little bit harder,” she said, and she said she did just that.

“The proposal was likely a preelection political move, but it is policy that needs to become law for the good of western North Dakota. We need to make sure he follows through on his campaign promises,” she explained.

Pretzer watched Bowman capture re-election Nov. 4 from her parents’ home in Scranton.

What she didn’t expect, however, was that she would be the quiet front-runner in another election: for Bowman County State’s Attorney.

The county’s top legal position was up for grabs after the departure of Andrew Weiss earlier this year. No names were entered to appear on the ballot.

Jim Gion of Mott filled the absence in the interim. Gion previously held the spot officially in Bowman County, but left for Weiss to take over.

There were 192 write-ins for the state’s attorney position.

Pretzer had the most with 89 votes. Bowman City Attorney Steve Wild had 53 and Gion had

17.

Bowman County Auditor Sandi Tivis said that Pretzer meets all qualifications for the job—she received more than 30 write-in votes, is registered to practice law and is a resident of the county. After election canvassing officiates the results on Monday, the job as state’s attorney is Pretzer’s, if she wants it.

And she does.

Pretzer said that as an undergraduate student she looked into becoming a social worker.

She went into social work because she wanted to make a change. But she realized she couldn’t do too much in that field, so she went to law school.

Considering the role social services plays in the state’s attorney’s duties, Pretzer said it would be a good fit and expressed her excitement and gratitude for her write-in nomination. “I’m a whole lot more confident in my abilities as an attorney,” she added.

“My overall goal is to do what’s best for western North Dakota; work to keep it a great place to live and I know the best

way for me to do that is through public service of some sort,” she said.

Pretzer was a somewhat quiet, self-conscious and indirect person when she entered the race for Senate earlier this year.

Going through the primaries, a campaign and finally Election Day, she learned a lot about herself and her abilities. In that time, she passed the Bar examination, officially became a lawyer and began work as an attorney at the Mackoff Kellogg law firm in Dickinson.

“When I first decided to run for State Senate ... there were a lot of ‘what ifs,’” she admitted.

“I kind of learned if you decided you’re going to go far, then try it. The results might not end up as you want them but ... I still got my message out there.”

Pretzer said that if the position of Bowman County State’s Attorney is “offered” to her, she would accept it.

“I think the state’s attorney job is really where I can make a positive impact,” she said.

“I need to feel like I’m helping somebody.”

Bowman Gets ‘Grimm’

Bowman drama students will discover their ‘Grimm’ side this weekend as they hit the stage to perform a special production of classics written

by The Brothers Grimm.

The Bowman County High School Drama Department will perform “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” at 7 p.m. Nov. 9 inside the high school gymnasium prior to the young actors taking the performance to the North Dakota High School Activities Association’s Region 10 One-Act Play competition Nov. 12 at Dickinson State University.

Bowman County will compete with area Region 10 schools. The top two teams

will advance to the state competition in Jamestown on Nov. 24 and 25.

The 40-minute performance is the maximum amount of time allowed to perform their one-act, giving the students a big task.

After a year off, following last year’s hit performance of “Grease,” the drama department will perform the “Spectaculathon,” a showcase of the classic fairy tales scribed

by The Brothers Grimm. During their lifetime, the Brothers Grimm amassed an impressive 209 fairy tales. To cram all within 40 minutes would be an impossible feat.

So, the students will focus on classics such as “Rapunzel,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Snow White”

and “Cinderella.”

The production is considered a comedy, so the Bowman students will have free reign to take the fairy tales into any directions they so choose, injecting humor along the way.

Each character attempts to retell the stories from their point of view, according to Lyndsey Erickson, drama teacher at Bowman County Schools.

Erickson said the cast members have worked almost 45 days on the production, including getting together for group practices on Sunday evenings.

The comedy is family friendly, so be sure to bring the little ones. Dollars for Scholars will be serving popcorn at the concession stand.

Fall Mule Deer survey complete The North Dakota Game and Fish Department’s fall mule deer survey indicated production in 2014 bodes well for the future Biologists counted 1,969 (1,761 in 2013) mule deer in the aerial survey in October.

The buck-to-doe ratio of 0.50 (0.46 in 2013) was slightly above the long-term average of 0.43 bucks per doe, while the fawn-to-doe ratio of 0.95 (0.74 in 2013) was the highest since 1999, and above the long-term average of 0.90 fawns per doe.

“Overall, this year’s fawn production is very encouraging, and with average-to-good survival should result in another increase in the spring,”

said Bruce Stillings, big game management supervisor, Dickinson.

While it is encouraging to see mule deer numbers increase for the short-term, Stillings said challenges remain for continued population growth, including changes in habitat quality due to fragmentation and disturbance, predators and weather.

The fall aerial survey, conducted specifically to study demographics, covers 24 study areas and 306.3 square miles in western North Dakota. Biologists survey the same study areas in the spring of each year to determine population abundance.

GAME AND FISH NEWS ■■ Permit Required to Possess Dead Deer

North Dakota Game and Fish Department enforcement personnel are issuing a reminder that a permit is required before taking possession, or any part, of a dead deer found near a road or in a field, including the skull with antlers.

Only shed antlers can be possessed without a permit.

Permits to possess are free and available from game wardens and local law enforcement offices.

In addition, hunters are reminded to properly dispose of dead deer. Harvested deer cannot be left on the side of a roadway or in a ditch, and deer parts cannot be discarded in commercial dumpsters.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department reminds deer hunters to find their license and check it for accuracy.

Every year the Game and Fish Department’s licensing section receives last-minute inquiries from hunters who can’t find their license. When that happens, it’s difficult to try to get a replacement license in time for the season opener.

Volleyball season ends with Bowman Co., Scranton-Hettinger match

Hettinger-Scranton’s (HS) volleyball team took on Bowman County’s (BC) in their final regular season match with nothing on the line except pride. Both teams came into the game tied for last place in Region 7 with 1-9 records. But as usual, whenever these two teams face off against each other in any sport, it is like a sudden death playoff game.

But not only was the rivalry on the line but escaping out of the league cellar was added fuel.

It looked like HS was going to sweep the Bulldogs as they won the first set 25-18 and came back with an even more convincing score with a 25-12 victory. The third set started out fairly even but after an injury time-out Bowman put on a run and Nighthawk mistakes took on a run of their own. Up to that point HS was playing almost a zero error game. The Bulldogs took a 25-12 victory.

BC started the fourth set strong but the Nighthawks continued to battle and hustle their way back into the set and pulled out a 27-25 win to take the match.

[Photo by Jason Waskiewicz | Pioneer] year and after watching both teams play I find it hard to fathom how either team could only have one Region 7 win. Their hustle and desire to win kept the crowd going. And I believe the Bowman crowd energized the Bulldogs in that third set.

The HS fans were alive also, just not in the numbers that Bowman had. But I will give the cheering victory to a group of male Nighthawk fans in their good nature bantering towards a group of male Bulldog fans.

I don’t have the official stats but I thought Lizzy Thompson, Kaylee Pierce, Madison War-

bis, Kinsey Jahner and Kayla Chadwick played extremely well. This is not to discredit anyone else because it was the entire Nighthawk team that played hard. The Bulldogs also played with hustle and desire but too many serving errors hurt their game.

The Nighthawk “C” team and the Junior Varsity team also came out on top as the “C” team won 2-0 and the JV won 2-1.

It looks like HS will play at Heart River and BC will play at Beach in the regional play-in matches on 7 Nov.
