Pioneer announces Pasta crossword contest winners

This year, the Pioneer received many entries for its crossword contest during National Pasta Lovers’ Week, Oct. 19 to 25, sponsored by the Pioneer and the North Dakota Wheat Commission.

North Dakota ranks number one in the nation in the production of durum, which is used to make pasta. Simple, quick, inexpensive and healthy, pasta is an ideal meal option for today’s busy family.

North Dakota produces 60 percent of the nation’s durum, which traditionally is pasta’s key ingredient.

This year’s Pasta Month theme was “Keep Calm and Eat Pasta,” a reminder to consumers that despite some recent media-hype construing pasta and other wheat foods as unhealthy, pasta is a nutritious food choice when eaten as part of a balanced diet.

Bowman experiences major sewer break

Residents of the city of Bowman were asked to conserve water Tuesday after a major break in a city sewer main.

A line running through Bowman City Park burst Sunday evening, according to Lyn James, president of the Bowman City Commission. Since then, crews have been at the scene in an attempt to alleviate the problem in preparation to install a replacement piece.

On Wednesday, residents that registered their mobile n phone numbers were notified via the city’s automated notification system that the city was experiencing a major sewage outage and that residences spanning from Highway 85 to 8th Ave. W in Bowman refrain from using water and sewer.

No timeframe was set, as of Wednesday, for when repairs would be completed.

“It’s a big problem,” James said on Tuesday.

Bill Mason, sewer and water supervisor for the city, said that in all the years he worked in Bowman, this was the largest break of its kind, according to James.

Crews were busy at the beginning of the week attempting to pump out the pipes to stay ahead of what was coming through, so that they could get a replacement piece installed.

“You can’t replace it while it’s flowing and there’s really no way to shut it down,” James said.

So residents were asked to be cautious with the amount of water they used.

“I asked Bill (Mason) if we should be contacting people and he said that the line is big enough that it would really be difficult to know where to draw the line as far as who should and shouldn’t be flushing their toilets and running their washing machines and things like that,” James said. “So they’re just using vac trucks to try to get ahead of it.”

[Photos by Bryce Martin] The city put out an announcement on social media and the local radio station that advised residents to be conservative with the amount of water they used.

“That’s about all you can do, is a public service announcement,” James said.

James considered the event an emergency situation.

In such an event, the problem has to be dealt with and the city budget readjusted accordingly, she said.

The main was said to be decaying, as it was clay-lined and very old. James said it probably is one of the original pieces to the city’s sewer system.

“And we have a lot of it, miles of it, that needs to be replaced,” she explained.

The city has worked to replace different pieces as they see there are problems. There are weaker areas that the city’s water and sewer department are aware of, which are considered target areas and are arranged on a priority list.

The sewer break in the park, however, was not on that list.

“This was very unforeseen,” James said. “It’s nobody’s fault, it’s just an old system.”

With the frigid weather in Bowman this week, James said it is typical for pipes to break.

An outside company was brought in by the city to help with the situation. It is considered a larger project than the city could handle with its current equipment and manpower. But James said she is

confident that the company and the city department would

work together to correct the problem.

The almanac said very cold and quite a bit of snow this winter which doesn’t surprise me. We’ve had a nice fall so far; however there are

still some sunflowers and peas out there to combine.

It certainly has been odd weather. I don’t think we had a spring or summer. It was a very cold spring and summer.

We have two new residents now, Betty Peterson and Elwin Pladsen, they both came this week.

Thursday afternoon they had a Memorial Service for Larry Huckins in the chapel.

Carolyn Bingham stopped in for a few minutes.

It snowed all morning on Monday; the television said that Bowman had seven inches.

Brock White and Bob White stopped Saturday to see Joann.

Kenny and Deanna Hein-

rich came to visit Ada. Pat and Leanne Rafferty and Ada were among the guests at the steak house Sunday evening. They were guests of Leo Heinrich.

Monday afternoon the Bowman American Legion Auxiliary had the Birthday Party of the Month. Delores Schuch served some delicious buns with ham salad and a pickle. Charolette Pladsen read an article about the Legionnaires. Sarah read all of the letters from the grade school to the veterans.

They were very interesting and they were all very good.

Thanks to the students for taking time for writing these letters. Birthdays in November are Jim Oberfol and Tom Ginsbach.

By DEAN MEYER Hello, I’m here to announce that winter is upon us! The wonderful October we had gave us a chance to get our fall work done and prepare for the onslaught of winter. I didn’t get done. We still have calves on

cows on the reservation. We still have hay in the field. The garden hose and many tools are covered with snow this morning. The sprayer is not winterized and I can’t find my winter cap. History repeats itself.

But one chore we did get done was sorting the cows up and getting some to a cow sale this week. From now until the end of the year, you will find several stock cow sales. Now fall sales are kind of like buying lottery tickets.

You never know for sure what you will get.

Sometimes there is a dispersion of cows. These are usually your best bet to get some good cows. You will

N.D. Outdoors Hunting conversations sometimes have a number of words that are owned and defined by the hunter and the context in which they are used.

For instance, a “nice deer” or a “big buck” may not even be on the same page in the same conversation between any number of hunters.

Sometimes, people are in complete agreement on, say, what qualifies as a trophy, and other times, even at the same table in the same coffee shop with mostly the same people, the discussion is a bit more conflicting.

So from lunker and whopper, to trophy and big, the discussions and conversations can travel an array of paths and roads. Even something more vague such as what defines a “quality hunt,” can turn a short, friendly cup of coffee into a drawn out, unending dialogue.

My standards for satisfaction when it comes to hunting and fishing experiences are similar to some, but much different than others. For me,

a short afternoon walk that provides nothing more than a glimpse of a beaver working away in a creek can put a smile on my face as much as a rooster or buck.

Everyone who spends time outdoors shares a common bond, but each individual fulfills his or her own appetite – or fulfills “quality” differently.

And even with deer gun season ending Nov. 23, there is still time to add more fulfilling experiences to your 2014 scrapbook. While the Nov. 10 winter storm and following cold snap pretty much sent most waterfowl headed south, turkey and some late-season pheasant and grouse hunting extend into early January.

While late season hunting can have some weather challenges, for many hunters it’s more about getting out and enjoying one more time with friends in familiar places. It’s all about enjoying the outdoors in a way that suits you, assuming, of course, that you stay within legal and ethical boundaries.

get a few bad ones because everyone has a few. But the majority would be good honest cows.

Or you may be able to find some short-term cows that will be all right for a year or two. A short-term cow is missing a tooth or two and may need a little extra care, but by and large she has been a good producer in someone’s herd for a number of years.

Or you may be in the market for some bred heifers. Especially if you have a wife that doesn’t mind getting up a few times during the night and checking heifers in the spring.

It keeps her young and gives her skin that wonderful glow that makes a woman beauti-

ful. At least that’s my story.

But some cows are just not nice. The ones I am selling are not nice. I bought them a year ago.

They appeared to be a bit flighty when they came into the ring. But I was younger then and didn’t mind. There were 22 head of nice big cows. The owner forgot to mention that they couldn’t be chased, hauled, sorted, or corralled. They had never seen a saddle horse and knew that this four-legged animal was evil.

If you rode near them after they had calved, you were taking your life in your hands.

One would let out a beller and come out of the middle of the

herd and try to knock your horse down. I lost my hat and glasses, but did manage to stay atop one scared horse.

But with three grand kids that help ride, I swore these cows were going to the sale.

And by the time you read this, they will be in someone else’s herd.

But trust me, I will warn the buyer that these cows carry a warning label, “Not safe for children, or old men!”

So to whoever buys them, like Red Skeleton used to say, “Good night, and God bless!”

And with that I am leaving for the cow sale in Belle Fourche to see if I can get a deal.

On the other hand, it’s been a great open water fishing season and that should continue once the inevitable ice of winter becomes solid enough for safe travels.

The topic of “how much time” do you spend outdoors is a common late fall conversation topic at gas stations, sporting goods stores and small town cafés. I’ve never heard anybody respond, “You

know Doug, I hunted way too much this fall.” It just doesn’t happen.

What each person strives for is time outdoors that fills their definition of a quality experience.

How that’s defined, only you decide.

For me, the more often I get out, the more often I find those quality experiences that make me want to get out even more.

The Northern Ambassadors of Music group is touring Europe the summer of 2015. They have one ongoing fundraiser that just started, an electronic device recycling project running for many months. Also, they are hosting an alumni game over Christmas break.

■■ Railway backlog update Rep. Kevin Cramer announced this week that BNSF Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) have publicly filed updated weekly status reports on the backlog in grain shipments.

The figures from BNSF show a total of 3,704 past due rail cars in North Dakota averaging 14.1 days late as of October 17, compared to the report the previous week which indicated 3,706 past due cars were averaging 12.3 days late. The CP report shows a total of 1,801 open requests in North Dakota with an average age of 3.77 weeks. The previous report showed 1,771 open requests with an average age of 3.57 weeks.

begins Patrol officers across North Dakota are kicking off the most focused seat belt enforcement period of the season. Forty-five law enforcement agencies will deploy extra patrols, including many located in the state’s most rural counties. Officials are notifying drivers throughout the state, but especially in rural areas and smaller communities, that November is a good time to get in the habit of buckling up, every trip, every time.

The greater prevalence of light trucks among rural traffic increases the need for seat belt education and enforcement in rural areas, according to the North Dakota Department of Transportation. The most recent available data suggests that pickup drivers are the group most associated with low seat belt use and a high rate of fatalities due to ejection during a crash.

Pickups have some of the highest fatality rates in single vehicle rollover crashes, the most common type of fatal crash in North Dakota. In a 2011 report, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that heavy-duty crew cab four-wheel drive pickups were the worst, with small twowheel drive, large two and four-

wheel drive and very large twowheel drive pickups all in the top five vehicle types with the highest fatalities in single rollover crashes.

It’s a deadly combination: the vehicle’s propensity to roll and the low rate of seat belt use among pickup occupants.

A 2014 observation survey reported last month by the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute found the lowest rates of seat belt use in North Dakota were among male pickup occupants on secondary or local roadways.

“The state’s seat belt laws are enforced equally for all vehicles throughout the year. We’re trained to be even-handed. But law enforcement officers are very aware of the higher number of pickup drivers and passengers who may not be buckled up,” said Ransom County Sheriff Darren Benneweis.

“Getting a ticket might remind them to buckle up,” he added.

Bow hunting for antlered or antlerless deer began Oct. 1 and will be permitted at Fort Stevenson State Park. Bow hunters wishing to hunt at the park must apply for a special park permit, available at the park office during regular business hours from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Hunters must present a valid North Dakota bow license and unused tag to receive the special park permit.

Hunters can harvest deer at Grahams Island State Park during the bow, gun and muzzleloader seasons. Grahams Island opened for turkey hunting Oct. 11. Again, hunters must have the appropriate licenses, a park entrance permit on their vehicle, and as needed a special park hunting permit to hunt special interior park units.

Fort Ransom State Park allows deer hunting during the regular deer gun season beginning Nov. 7 and concluding Nov. 23. Hunters must have tags for Unit 2 G1 along with a special park hunting permit which is issued by Fort Ransom State Park staff. The area of the park open to hunting will be the northern two-thirds of the park. Hunters have to pay the park entrance fee, unless they have an annual state park permit. ATVs are prohibited along with deer stands or off-road travel by any motorized travel.

OBITUARIES Ashley Sense

Ashley Marie Sense, 20, of Bowman, N.D., passed away on Nov. 1, 2014 near Marmarth, N.D. Funeral Services for Ashley were on Friday, Nov. 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Bowman Lutheran Church. Pastor Charles Swanson and Pastor Mark Nygard officiated with burial to follow in the Bowman Cemetery. Visitation for Ashley was on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014 at the Krebsbach Funeral Home Chapel from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Ashley Sense was born on Aug. 31, 1994 in Rapid City, S.D., the daughter of Becky Sense and Ken Morkert. As a young girl, Ashley lived in Rapid City and Spearfish.

At the age of 18, Ashley welcomed a beautiful baby girl named Adalynn Ray on Sept.

13, 2013. Ashely was an employee at JaBBR’S for a number of years and she recently started a job in Baker, Mont., at the Corner Bar. Her life was all about Adalynn and her family. She also loved the Green Bay Packers. Ashley always made sure everyone’s needs were taken care of before her own. She was a beautiful girl with a huge heart.

She is survived by her mother, Becky Sense of Baker and her father, Ken (Marcy) Morkert of Rapid City; her daughter, Adalynn Storer; brothers, Justin (Lauren) Sense and their children; Ian and Brooklynn and Austin Sense, step sisters, Logan and Chyenne, grandparents, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother Colleen Sense and other grandparents.

Magdalen (Breen) Wanner

Magdalen “Maggie” Breen Wanner, 86, of Bowman, ND, passed away on November 10, 2014 at the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Center in Bowman.

Memorial Services for Maggie were at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014 at the Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Home Chapel in Bowman. Burial will be in the St. Charles Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

Maggie was born July 6, 1928, the fifth child of Frank and Hermina (Leferink) Slag in Bismarck, N.D. The Slags immigrated from Holland and homesteaded 5 miles north of Bismarck where they had a dairy farm. Maggie and her older sister Jean, spent most of their early years living with

the sisters at the convent of St. Mary’s. Maggie was proud to be a first generation American, and never knew her grandparents. She never had an aunt around and her uncle who was a pastor at the Catholic Church in Bismarck died when she was very small. In high school she was Father Cassedy’s secretary, typing his sermons and keeping track of the cemetery residents. Father Cassedy married Maggie and Donald Breen on July 6, 1946. This was her birthday and her parents anniversary. Through the years they took in extra kids as well as raising 11 of their own.

When health kept Don from farming, they moved to Washburn, Beulah, Dickinson and Bowman where she resided the last 40 plus years. Through the years Maggie was a township secretary, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, a 4-H leader and member of the 4-H board, a CCD teacher, a church choir director, an advocate for the handicapped, a member of the governors council for the handicapped, and an ARC member and Board member.

Several summers she was a helper and counselor at Camp Recreation in Richardton. She helped start food pantries and farmers markets, serving on their boards. In the early 70’s Maggie decided to join the social work force mainly working with the disadvantaged and elderly. She was custodian for the Bowman School System and loved working with the kids. In later years she worked with the Title 1 program. Her life has been spent loving kids,

Maggie would like to be remembered in the birds, flowers, weeds, and bugs. She took in stray dogs and cats giving them a home and loving care. Her pet coon went everywhere with her. Her love was Goose. Beautiful, Smart, Funny Goose. If it was a part of nature, it was her love. She is survived by 3 brothers, John (Marion) Slag, Hebron, N.D., Tom (Leona) Slag, Alamagordo, N.M., Victor (Sue) Slag, Fargo, N.D, and a brotherin-law Orville Hesch, Devils Lake, N.D. She was preceded in death by her parents, both her husbands, her sister, Jean And her husband L.G. Hanson, Granby, Mo., her brother Joseph and his wife Leone, Wimbledon, N.D., her sister Mary, Devils Lake, N.D. and her brother Robert, Los Angeles, Cal. Three children pre-

Bowman will see an increase in its bulk water and garbage fees at the beginning of next year.

Fees for the use of the city of Bowman’s bulk water station, located near the city shop at 305 4th St. NE, is set to increase by $3 per 1,000 gallons.

The station is primarily used by farmers, oil companies and chemical companies that need to fill large tanks of water.

The bulk water rate went up “to be more competitive with other bulk water rates in the area,” according to Bowman City Commission President Lyn James.

“It would be the large users that it would affect,” James said.

Residences in Bowman will be unaffected by that increase.

As stated within the Bowman city ordinance, utility rates shall be fixed by resolution of the governing body and the city

reserves the right to change the rates as it deems best.

An increase to the city’s refuse collection rate, however, will affect homeowners, but James considered the increase minimal.

Weekly pickup of residential can garbage will increase Jan. 1 by 50 cents per month, Dumpster fees will increase by 50 cents per pickup and the mileage rate for out of town refuse customers will increase by 50 cents.

And $1 was added to the city’s Sur Fund, funds of which are used by the city in times of emergency situations. Beginning Jan. 1, the total paid by city households will be $2 for the Sur Fund.

“It never is enough,” James said.

With somewhere between 800 and 1,000 meters in the city, a $1 per month increase doesn’t mean much for big projects, such as the recent city sewer main break, but it helps, James said.

Since she held a “soft opening” of her restaurant, Uptown Bar & Grill in Bowman, last week, satisfied customers have spread the word of the new addition to town, so much so that the first two days of her opening she has been packed.

Longland was forced at the beginning of this week to have a limited service—minus a few of the more popular menu items— because she did not expect such a large community response.

She has not advertised, except for a little on social media, but still has started to establish a regular crowd of patrons.

Located at 13 1st Ave. NE, inside the former location of Hawk’s Landing, Uptown Bar

and Grill moved away from the previous business’s steakhouse atmosphere. Longland replaced the dark red tiling, red lighting fixtures and wall of burgundy drapes to give her restaurant a brighter, more family-oriented feel.

Longland started working in the food service industry when she was 16 years old in Rapid City. She worked overnight at a local truck stop, while she was raising her daughter.

“Way back then, I had this dream that someday I’m going to own my own restaurant,” Longland said.

Fast-forward to last week when she saw that dream become a reality.

“The biggest thing that made me say we’re going to do it is that I was managing the Cenex and when you have people coming in all the time (asking), ‘Is there any place to eat in this

town?’ It’s really hard to say no, he’s closed,” she said. “So I come home one night and told my husband that I think we should open a restaurant.”

His response was, “Okay.”

Longland assumed he considered it a “fly-by-night” idea.

But it was not.

Two days later, Longland had an appointment to look at the location of Hawk’s Landing, which was up for sale.

That was two months ago.

Longland developed a marketing and business plan for her restaurant with the help of Laura Weber from the Small Business Development Center in Bowman, part of the Bowman County Development Corp.

“We knew it was going to take a lot of work,” Longland said.

With a staff of cooks—Rod Whisenant, Lonny Jonhson and Kathy Wyman—and three

servers who worked at Hawk’s Landing—Brooke Getz, Evie Miller and Katie Harrison— Longland forged ahead to get the building ready for its scheduled Nov. 6 opening.

Only days before the opening, a lot of work still remained and Longland put in long, sleepless days and nights to meet her deadline, which already had been pushed off because of other delays.

“Kara was a client that was maybe more persistent than some and she had a goal in mind so she continued,” Weber said. “When she needed help, she came back and asked for it.”

But when Nov. 6 approached, most of the interior work was completed and Uptown Bar & Grill opened for customers.

The difference that Uptown Bar & Grill brings to the area is its seven-day-a-week service, opening at 6 a.m. They will run

a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, with specials for all three meals Monday through Friday. Drink and appetizer specials will be available on Sundays.

Uptown Bar & Grill will cater to mostly anybody with an appetite—serving the traditional burgers, sandwiches and dinners, with the addition of fish, wraps, pasta and steaks. Longland described it as having an Applebee’s type of atmosphere and menu.

Weber said she was excited by the addition of a restaurant that would serve fish. There was also talk of bringing bigticket menu items in for holiday celebrations, something Hawk’s Landing did in the past.

A local woman will also supply fresh baked goods to serve at Uptown, including caramel and

There will also be different specials that Weber said Longland had some ideas to add a little bit more flair to.

“I think the menu options will be different enough that it will create a differentiation (from other local restaurants),” Weber said.

Concerning competition with local eateries, Longland’s business plan talked about maintaining a top-quality level of service and establishing a good feeling when customers walk in the door.

“And my door’s open, seven days a week,” Longland added.

Hawk’s Landing officially closed Oct. 19. It only operated during the evenings on four days of the week.

While fewer people are searching for jobs and more businesses are hiring, Longland said she felt comfortable with her amount of staff. “I think I will have to make adjustments after we open. Am I concerned about it? No.” On the employment side, Longland spoke a lot about empowering her employees and providing them with opportunities to grow and learn in ways that they want to expand themselves, too.

“Retention will hopefully be helped by that,” Weber said.

Longland said having the assistance from Weber was crucial.

By JASON WASKIEWICZ For the Pioneer A 95-year-old veteran shared his wartime ahead of Veterans Day. Bowman County students and community members braved the snow to attend the Veterans Day program Nov. 10 at the Bowman County School.

This year, Martin Rolfsness of Bowman shared his story of World War II. Rolfsness enlisted in the Navy on Oct. 8, 1941. During his training, he decided he wanted

to be a pilot. It was also during this training that he married.

He became a gunner in an SBD dive-bomber. In that plane he fired a 30mm gun out of the rear of the plane while sitting back to back with the pilot. He was stationed on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific.

His aircraft carrier patrolled the coast of Guadalcanal, an island in the Solomon Islands, and dive-bombed the beaches of Bougainville, in New Guinea, during the invasion.

Much later, he learned that Doug Burtell of Bowman, who

shared his story several years ago at the program, was one of the ground soldiers on the beach. He served his country for 6 years and was discharged from the Navy in 1947 with the rank of Ensign.

Following his presentation, Sgt. First Class Mark Wanner of the National Guard shared the story of how he earned a Silver Star in Afghanistan in May of 2009. The full story only recently became declassified and was broadcast Nov. 11 on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Luba on journey to join Armed Forces Patricia (Peterson) Luba, daughter of Lynn and Liz Peterson of Bowman has completed several milestones toward her journey to be a part of the less than 1 percent that are serving our country in the Armed Forces of America.

Patricia is a graduate of Bowman County High School.

During her junior year of high school she enlisted into the North Dakota Army National Guard. She attended basic training her junior summer at Ft. Jackson, SC. After high school graduation she attended her advanced individual training in Communications at Ft. Gordon, GA. Upon completion of that training she started her college studies at North Dakota State University, where she was a member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Patricia moved to Tennessee to be with her husband who was serving in the Army at Ft. Campbell, KY. She continued her studies and ROTC training at Austin Peay State University, TN. In May of 2014 she received her commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. All new Army officers must complete additional training in the specific branch of the Army they have chosen to work in. Patricia chose to go into the logistics branch of the Army. She started her Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC) at Ft. Lee, VA early this fall and completed the training this past week. Patricia lives in the Pittsburgh,

PA area and will be a Platoon Leader in a Brigade Support Battalion in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Patricia received the Army Achievement Metal during her BOLC training for her excellence in physical training. She achieved a score of 325 in her physical fitness test. The test consists of pushups, sit-ups and 2 mile run. If a soldier meets the top score in each exercise they receive a score of 100. To achieve a score of over 300 points the soldier must meet and/or exceed the top score set by the Army in each exercise. This is not an easy task and demonstrates Patricia’s hard work and dedication toward serving her country in the United States Army.

If you could put a measurement on community support for Yvonne Stegner, you’d need more than a few tape measures.

On Nov. 8, citizens of Amidon and members of the surrounding communities gathered to show support for Stegner.

Stegner has been in the hospital since she suffered a stroke in her brainstem on Oct. 7. After early stroke symptoms set in she was taken by ambulance to Bowman and was then flown to St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck.

After she was diagnosed and assessed in Bismarck, she was then flown to Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis where she spent two weeks in the intensive care unit.

She recently was moved to Vibra Hospital in Mandan to continue treatment and begin the rehabilitation process.

With one of their members suffering, the town of Amidon rallied.

Spearheaded by the board members of Lebanon Lutheran Church, a benefit was held to raise funds to support Stegner and her family as they get through the difficult ordeal.

Stegner is treasurer of the church and was described by those closest to her as a great person and a wonderful mother.

“Yvonne is just an overall nice person, everybody thinks the world of her,” said Lyn Hewson, Amidon resident and friend to Stegner.

Mother to five children, Stegner has connections to different parts of southwest North Dakota.

Three of her children attend school in New England. She is the postmaster of the Amidon post office and her husband, Brice, works for MBI Energy Services in Belfield.

“I just know there’s a lot of outreach from a large area of people,” Hewson said.

Stegner grew up in Litchville and received her teaching degree from Valley City State University.

She began teaching in Powers Lake where she met her husband. They relocated to Amidon and she’s been active in the community ever since.

“She has really embraced the community out there (in Amidon),” said Karen Erickson, Stegner’s sister.

Erickson said support has also come from other areas outside Amidon, such as MBI Energy Services. They have been wonderful in supporting Brice as he supports his wife and takes care of the children, according to Erickson.

“Those folks up there (at MBI) have just been phenomenal in being supportive of him and the family,” Erickson said.

Erickson was in attendance for the medical benefit held at the Amidon fairgrounds and was very happy to see the turn out.

and tried to do everything they can is just really touching to see,” Erickson said. “The support that we see really speaks to the goodness of the people out there in these communities.”

It took the church board about two weeks to plan the event, said Michelle Petri. With such a short period of time, she said everyone took on a specific job and really worked together.

“Everybody pitches in with something like that, everyone wants to help out, and is willing to donate time,” Petri said.

Petri also serves on the church board at Lebanon Lutheran and is friends with Stegner.

Other board members that planned the event included Leon Hewson, John Hanson and Don Nordby. Among others, said Petri, there were numerous people to pitch in and volunteer.

The event featured a live and silent auction, along with musical entertainment and a steak dinner.

Musical performers included Mark Koller, Lyn Hewson, Mark Franklund, Kery Youngstrand, Erin Ehlis, and Lane and Anne Dingfelder.

“Music is a big part of Yvonne’s life. She’s a very talented musician and having an event for Yvonne had to include music because of her passion for music,” Petri said.

The auctions featured a wide range of items including make up, toys, books, cooking utensils, baby items, luggage, guns, art and baked goods.

Between the two auctions over $9,000 was raised.

The meal was also a big success—it’s estimated they served about 270 people, according to Petri.

Between the auctions and the free will offering, $35,002.50 was raised, a testament to what a community can do when one of their own is hurting.

“That should speak volumes to the family that there’s a lot of people out there that care and are concerned and want to help,” Petri said. “It’s the generosity of the people too.”

Petri said they are gathering photos from the event so they can bind them in a book to bring to Stegner. It’s a simple gesture intended to help Stegner see how many people are out there supporting her as she ventures down the road to recovery.

Sunrise Foundation announces local scholarship recipients

The Sunrise Foundation Board of Directors awarded nine area college students with scholarships towards their healthcare education.

To qualify for the scholarship, college students must be from the counties of Bowman, Slope, Harding, or Adams. The scholarships are only awarded to college students who are pursuing a career in healthcare and have successfully completed all requirements for at least their freshman year of college.

Over the past 23 years, Sunrise Foundation has distributed over 150 scholarships totaling almost $120,000.

in Lake Sakakawea have resulted in an abundance of rainbow smelt and other alternative forage, which in turn has contributed to excellent condition and growth of game fish. Walleye numbers are high, and recruitment of several strong year classes in recent years bodes well for the future. In addition, a good population of northern pike should produce some of trophy quality.

Overall health of the Devils Lake fishery remains good. Walleye abundance is strong and anglers fishing for walleye this winter should expect similar numbers and size fish as compared to recent years. Northern pike are still plentiful with a nice average weight of about four pounds. The number of catchable-sized perch available is down from 2013 but still should be considered good.
