Relay for Life heads back to Bowman

Relay for Life will once again be held in Bowman, starting next year.

Kent Anderson, organizer with Relay for Life North Dakota, spoke with members of the Bowman Area Chamber of Commerce on Monday and expressed the desire to relocate the annual fundraising race from Hettinger, where it has been held for the past two years.

It won’t be completely new to Bowman, as it was previously held in the city prior to its move to Adams County.

Bowman was “crazy successful" the first year it hosted the event, Anderson said. Since then, Bowman’s organization of the relay won several awards.

Relay for Life was created to help ensure people diagnosed with cancer know there are many that support them and that they are never alone.

The Relay for Life of Southwest North Dakota paraded through the streets of Hettinger on a sunny, warm day this June. Twelve groups and 187 participants gathered for the event this year.

Following the relay at dark, survivors and the loved ones who gathered to support them were encouraged to ignite a luminary and place them around the relay track as a glowing

port group for survivors and their caregivers, according to the American Cancer Society, which established the event. It is hosted annually throughout 5,200 communities across the country.

“Whether you’re a survivor or caregiver, getting involved in your local Relay For Life event can introduce you to others who are facing the same challenges, and provide opportunities for learning, sharing, and friendship,” read an encouraging scribe on the Relay for Life website.

The money raised by Relay for Life goes to find a cure, local services, education, patient services and advocacy. Since it was founded, Relay for Life has helped to fund 48 Nobel Prize winners and startup researchers.

One such researcher recently funded by Relay for Life is in North Dakota.

Bowman previously acknowledged that its organizers wanted to establish a relationship with Hettinger, to initiate an agreement for hosting the event, but at that time, they weren’t ready for such a commitment.

Since it relocated, Hettinger has now said they’re ready to share hosting duties with Bowman.

But it’s a big operation, considering the amount of work and volunteer hours locally that goes into setting up for such a large event.

"It's a lot of work to put on one of these events," Anderson said. "Is it worth it? I think it's well worth it. It builds the community up, it honors those who are fighting the battle and lets those who are fighting know we are with them and we stand with them and we support them."

This & That

By JOSEPHINE KACZMARKEK Hello everybody. I’m sorry that I didn’t get the news in the past two weeks. I had bronchitis for two weeks, then to the hospital for eight days with double pneumonia. So far I’m doing pretty good but really took the zip out of me.

When I was in the hospital Pam and John, David and Barb, Lynette and Marlene and Jeff came to see me almost every day. I got many cards and flowers from Jim and Bonnie Kazmarek, and Gay and Dwight Dvirnak, and also from Mary Mack and Tenny Kelner.

Hello, There are not a lot of things in life I hate. Oh, I don’t like working cattle on a terrible windy day. But I guess I don’t hate it. I don’t like a fence crawling cow or a horse that stumbles. I don’t care for syrup on my pancakes. I’d rather have honey. But I don’t hate much.

But I hate mice. I always have. I jump more if a damn mouse runs by me than if I come across a rattlesnake when riding or fencing. I would rather have bats flying around my head than a mouse in the house.

This year is supposed to be, at least if you are Chinese, the “Year of the Horse”. It looks

Today I thought that I would decorate another bowling ball.

The last one I painted light blue and put all clear beads on it. This one I painted it lavender and probably put on all clear beads again, but haven’t decided yet. I use my “lazy Susan” put the ball holder base (John made for me) then set the ball on the base and I can turn it as I need to do another part. I found that the “lazy Susa” works real good when

Agnes Rafferty had a 90th Birthday the other day. Her son Pat came to see her that morning.

There is still a few under the weather, but things are looking up and will be ok soon.

Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through giftfilled shoeboxes along with the Good News of God's love. This program of Samaritan's Purse provides an opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in a simple, hands-on mission’s

project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas Jesus.

So how can you, your family, club or organization help? Residents are now collecting items such as soap and wash clothes, toothpaste and toothbrushes, combs, underwear and socks, t-shirts, small toys, color and picture books, crayons, pencils, hair clips, toy jewelry, and/or money for postage - each box costs $7 to ship.

Please keep in mind the items will be packed in shoeboxes (which we already have) and then shipped so please NO chocolate or perishable foods; liquids or lotions; breakable items such as snow globes, glass containers or aerosol cans; toy guns or military figures.

Drop boxes are at the main entrances of Southwest Healthcare Services Long Term Care facility and Southwest Healthcare Clinic. The residents will package the boxes for either a boy or girl in age groups of 2-4,

5-9, or 10-14.

Since the majority of these shoeboxes will need to be filled and then taken to the closest drop site which is in Dickinson, donated items are asked to be dropped off at Southwest Healthcare Services Long Term Care by November 7th.

It is also possible for you to pick up and pack a shoebox; dropping it back to us by November 7th. Shirley came running, sure that I had been electrocuted or something.

But the door was locked! And the mouse was between the door and me. She kept asking if I was all right, but I couldn’t talk. This mouse was about half grown and staring me down.

It’s hard to describe what a 275-pound man standing on a toilet with his pants around his ankles looks like. You just have to imagine it.

My brave wife slid a baited (peanut butter) trap under the door and I pretended I was made of porcelain and we nabbed that sucker!

I’m guessing it was in a college apartment. This guy is sitting on the floor with a BB gun, waiting for this mouse to come out. His roommate is filming. All of a sudden the mouse comes out.

And you know how they kind of dart around like they are guilty of something.

This guy is drawing a bead on the mouse but it keeps starting and stopping and he can’t get a good shot. All of a sudden the mouse races along the wall.

And runs right up this guys shorts!

It was my worst nightmare!

A couple of years ago we were overrun by mice. Every bale you picked up, mice would scatter. If you left a pickup or truck in the hay field, chances are it would turn into a shelter for homeless mice. Then they kind of disappeared for a while.

Well, they are back.

We have some good cats. I have never seen a mouse on the porch or had a mouse come in the front door. The cats keep that pretty well guarded. I’m not sure if keeping the cat dish full of food is really good for keeping the cats on their toes.

But I am lucky. I married a trapper! There is nothing that makes Shirley happier than

getting up around daylight, slip on her robe, and check her trap line. And over the years, she has learned, that when she gathers up her nightly catch, don’t call me. I won’t take them off those sticky traps! I did throw one out on the porch last week with a live mouse on it. I figured those porch cats would figure out how to get him off.

The last I saw, my good brown cat had a mouse in his mouth, and a sticky trap stuck to a paw and the side of his head.

Now this is a bad story. The other morning I am sitting on the….Well, I was sitting with my pants around my ankles and a mouse comes running by me from behind the toilet. I let out a scream that would have

Letters to the Editor 'Measure 1 wording unclear' I am glad to see that we are finally talking about Constitutional Measure 1 with just a few days left before we exercise our right to vote on November 4th. The measure states: “The inalienable right to life of every human being at any stage of development must be recognized and protected.” In talking with neighbors, these words have been confusing, what do they really mean.

For some they are words that focus on the right to life beginning at conception. For others the question comes up about the right to life at the end of life, how will this effect decisions made by families and doctors. My own church understands the right to life to include health care for families, support for daycares and preschools and a living wage to support mothers and their children. The measure itself does not define what these words really mean, and leaves many unanswered questions.

Who gets to define what this measure means, will we use a Catholic definition, a Lutheran definition or an atheist definition and what will happen to those who believe differently?

I understand that the intent of the writers of this measure was focused on life beginning at conception and ending induced abortions. The actual wording of the measure does not clearly define this and will lead to many unintended consequences. My own church sees induced abortions as matter of deep concern and we mourn the loss of life that God has created. We also recognize that there are some circumstances that abortion may be the morally responsible decision. I oppose Constitutional Measure 1, because of the ambiguity of the wording and because it does not take into account God’s mercy and grace for families in difficult situations.

regarding the Triple Turn Classic that was recently held in Bowman on October 4 and 5th. In the eight years that my husband Chad and I have produced this event, this is the first year that an editor has ever taken the time to put a nice write up in the paper.

We so appreciate the time you took to research this event and let people know why it was postponed from spring to fall. Our event was another big success with roughly 800 barrel racing runs being made in the All Seasons Indoor Arena. The Triple Turn Classic paid out over $34,000 in cash and prizes throughout the two days. We had entries from all over the tri-state area as well as many new faces that were competing at the Triple Turn Classic for their very first time. There were two sets of concession stands as well as over 15 vendors throughout the weekend. A heart felt thank you goes out to all of the sponsors that have supported us through the years. I hope our local sponsors saw alot of revenue come through their doors. We sure could not put this event on without all of you. We are moving the Triple Turn Classic back to the spring for 2015. Mark your calendars for April 18-19th!

'City sales tax increase on ballot' The Bowman Parks and Recreation Board (BPRB) has been researching the need, the feasibility, and the design of an addition onto the current Rouzie Recreation Center for several years. A survey was conducted in 2011 with the public indicating they would like an indoor pool, indoor walking track, additional gym space, and multipurpose rooms. The programs are limited at the current Rouzie Rec Center because there is no space to add programs.

The Parks and Recreation Board was also made aware of the lack of garage facilities for Southwest Public Transit.

The vision was developed to encompass the wellness needs of the community in fitness, transportation, and meals. We

feel this is a very good marriage having these three entities under one roof.

The BPRB has determined this facility, the expansion project, will serve more than just Bowman City residents and that it will be sustainable if additional tax revenues are raised. Instead of raising property taxes on City of Bowman residents, the one-cent sales tax - City Measure #1, is a tax on tangible goods and services including restaurants, convenience, retail, hotels, and liquor in the city limits of Bowman. This tax will be collected from not just City of Bowman residents, but from those visiting and traveling through Bowman. The expanded facility is for the local region and this tax is reflective of the users of the facility. Southwest Public Transit serves four counties in southwest North Dakota and recreation programs draw from a tri-state area. A quality of life board will recommend to the City Council how the tax revenues will be spent and the City Commission will give final approval. The tax will be used for construction and operations of the facility. This tax has a 10 year sunset, ending 12/31/2024.

Bowman City Measure 1 reads: ‘A request has been submitted to the Bowman City Commission for a sales tax of 1% to be imposed upon gross receipts of retailers from all sales at retail including the leasing or renting of tangible personal property within the corporate limits of Bowman.

Such tax will parallel the ND Sales and Use Tax law and will terminate on 12/31/24 unless voted on to extend that date.

Dedication of tax proceeds shall be used for the advancement and quality of life improvements relating to parks and recreation related causes deemed appropriate by the quality of life board, who shall submit its recommendations to the Bowman City Commission for final approval.’ The three sentences of the ballot state there will be a 1% sales tax on retail items (Not farm equipment), that the tax will last 10 years, and that the tax will be used for the construction and operations of an expansion of facilities and programs.

The expansion project will be a reflection of the commitment our community has to wellness for all ages. The expansion will host youth and family programs, senior meals and wellness, transportation to and from the facility and local communities, and social gatherings such as birthday parties, arts and crafts, after school pro-

grams, and other events. The Bowman Parks and Recreation Board, the Southwest Public Transit Board and I are available to visit with the City of Bowman residents about the measure. The Bowman Parks and Recreation Board members are Darwin Wilke, Amy Smyle, Tana Smolnikar, Tyler Senn, and Chris Johnson. The local Southwest Public Transit Board members are Cora Hiller and Ann Kathrein.

'Commissioners: Vote no on 5' North Dakota is progressing and our counties are growing, and that’s great news. But when there is growth, there are certain needs that have to be addressed. The big ones are always infrastructure, roads and schools, and we rely on the state to help us manage those needs.

Many people may not be aware that the only way a county commission can raise revenue is through property taxes. Right now, the state is providing additional funding that has been used to reduce property taxes, but still give counties the funds we need to take care of county infrastructure problems. If Measure 5 passes, it could impact state funding to our local county.

Measure 5 would take $150 million every year away from the state’s general fund, which would affect local projects.

We all support conservation, but we need a balanced approach that considers all the needs across the state. When there is flexibility in the budgeting process, there is room to accommodate all the needs in the state. Measure 5 takes that flexibility away and puts our counties at risk by removing $150 million per year from the state’s general fund.

Right now, our county has a bright future. But all that becomes uncertain if funding isn’t available to keep up with our growing needs. Measure 5 threatens our growth by taking away $150 million, no matter what.

North Dakota has a unique opportunity to address the needs in our local counties along with our needs for conservation, but that is only as long as the state has the flexibility to adjust funding priorities as those needs change.

I support conservation, but Measure 5 is not the right approach for our North Dakota counties. Please join me in

voting no on Measure 5.

Rep. Kevin Cramer announced this week that BNSF Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) have publicly filed updated weekly status reports on the backlog in grain shipments.

The figures from BNSF show a total of 3,704 past due rail cars in North Dakota averaging 14.1 days late as of October 17, compared to the report the previous week which indicated 3,706 past due cars were averaging 12.3 days late. The CP report shows a total of 1,801 open requests in North Dakota with an average age of 3.77 weeks. The previous report showed 1,771 open requests with an average age of 3.57 weeks.

OBITUARIES Elaine Swanson

Elaine M. Swanson, 89, Bowman, N.D., passed away on Oct. 14 at the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Facility in Bowman. Funeral Services for Elaine were held on Oct. 18 at 11 a.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Scranton, N.D. Pastor Mary Peterson will officiate with burial to follow at Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Scranton. There was a Friends service on Oct. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Facility in Bowman.

Visitation for Elaine began at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 17, at the Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Chapel, Bowman.

Elaine Marie Hedman was born on May 3, 1925 at her parent’s farm south of Scranton. She was the youngest of six children born to Oscar and Ida Hedman. She graduated from Scranton High School in 1943. She was a star basketball player on the high school team. After graduation, she attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, earning her teaching certificate and after teaching a year in a country school, was able to return and get her degree. She then taught in North Dakota for a while and went west to Seattle where she taught for three years before returning to North Dakota.

In November of 1951, Elaine married Bernard Swanson at the Peace Lutheran Church in Scranton. Three children were born to this union, Gwen in 1955, Paul in 1957 and Duane in 1963. They lived on a farm north of Scranton, building a house that was later moved east of Bowman. This area allowed Elaine to have her horses nearby, always taking great care of them. She loved to groom and ride her horses. In 1994, Elaine and her daughter Gwen took a trip to Sweden to explore her roots. And in 1995, Elaine and Illabelle Nelson put together a history of the Hedman relations and hosted the “first ever

Hedman Family Reunion” in Scranton.

Elaine enjoyed playing sports and was a great athlete. While she was in Seattle, WA teaching, she played on a Seattle softball team. Later, after she returned to Scranton, she organized a softball team called the Blue Jay’s and could play any position needed. She also taught tennis and loved to bowl, proudly displaying her bowling trophies in her room at the nursing home. She also loved music and was a Bowman County Community Choir member for 35 years.

Other hobbies included gardening and teaching leather craft and tooling to the local 4-H club. She truly enjoyed leather tooling and was extremely gifted. She also enjoyed sewing and was well known for her seamstress skills.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Bernard, sons, Paul (Vicky) and Duane (Santha) Swanson, grandchildren Lindsey, Elizabeth, Amanda, Lisa, Kendra, Conner and Chase, eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elaine is precede in death by her parents, Oscar and Ida, her brothers, George, Russell, and Arnold (Bud), her sisters Myrtle and Helen, her daughter Gwen Vetter, her son in law, Lynn Vetter and one great granddaughter, Chanel Blair.

Wilma Gabrielson

The light of our lives, Wilma Anne Gabrielson, passed away on Wednesday Oct. 15 after a well-fought and courageous battle after suffering a stroke three weeks previously. Her dedication to her rehabilitation never wavered and she remained positive until her last breath. She will be missed so very much.

Her story begins on the plains of western North Dakota on Oct. 21, 1936. She was brought into this world with her twin brother, Willis, onto

the family homestead. They joined siblings Florence, Arlene, and Ferne. Their parents, Arvy and Mary Enloe, were hard-working salt-of-the earth homesteaders that provided a loving atmosphere in which to raise a family. Together, these five children raised much heck on their North Dakota Farm.

Nothing too serious, but there are many stories that make us laugh to this day. Upon graduating from Bowman High School, Wilma attended Jamestown College and earned a twoyear teaching certificate. She packed up what she had and relocated to Montana where she got her first teaching job. This is where she met the man she would marry, John Gabrielson who was in the United States Air Force stationed in Havre.

This union first produced a daughter, Kellie and then twins Debbie and Danny followed.

Wilma relocated to Rapid City where she went back to school and got her four-year teaching degree at Black Hills State College. She taught at Rapid City Public Schools until her retirement. She absolutely loved it and did so until her last day of teaching.

Upon retirement, mom didn’t exactly slow down much.

She would volunteer with many local groups and was heavily involved with her church, South Maple United Methodist Church. Mom always looked forward to her Thursday night Happy Hour gatherings with her gang for a few beers (on ice) and a Keoke Coffee. Last year, mom took a bit of a tumble and broke her hip. As always, she did what she needed to do and through surgery and rehabilitation, she came out the other side just fine. It was then that she decided that it was time for her to stop living on her own and decided that she didn’t want to drive any more. That is the way mom was, she made things easy for us. We didn’t need to make those tough decisions for her. The last year at Somerset Court was bliss for her. She took up the game of pool and actually became the 2014 Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest winner (female division) with a distance of 22’ 6”.

She was cackling when she told us this and I’ll never be able to look at watermelon seeds and not think of her.

Wilma suffered a stroke in September and was ready to do what she had to do to get back to Somerset so she can play some pool again. The nurses at RCRH were so very good to her and mom was a great pa-

tient. The nurses absolutely loved her. She transitioned to Clarkson Mt. View Health Care where she was to continue the healing process until she was ready to return to Somerset. Unfortunately that wasn’t meant to be. The lord had other ideas and took her into his loving arms on Oct. 15.

It was a beautiful day and she passed very quickly and peacefully. For that we are eternally grateful.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, Arvy and Mary, and sisters Florence and Ferne.

She is survived by her twin brother Willis (Margaret) Enloe, sister Arlene, daughter Kellie (Mark) Rude and grandsons Aaron and Brady, daughter Debbie (Crow) Buck, son Dan (Jacque) Gabrielson and her children Chad, Stephanie, Amber and Mindy, Great-grandchildren, Arlo, Abel, Berlyn, Logan, Jake and McKenzie.

Visitation was scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 19 at Kirk Funeral Home. Services were scheduled for 11 a.m. on Oct. 20 at South Maple United Methodist Church, followed by the burial services at Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, S.D. Salestine “Sally” R. Hirsch was born on May 9, 1920, the daughter of John and Margaret (Phillips) Hirsch, in Bowman County. She attended the Star Country School. Sally was united in marriage to Edmund “Eddie” J. Schaff on Oct. 19, 1936. Eddie passed away on Jan. 22, 1982. Sally and Eddie were married for 46 years and nine children. She and Eddie lived in Dickinson when first married and then moved to Bowman which was then their life-long home. Sally enjoyed visits and phone calls from family and friends. She loved old time music and always watched the “Polka Party” and listened to Daniel O’Donnell’s music. Sally lived her life to the fullest and always put everyone ahead of herself. She enjoyed playing 3 to 13 with all of her card buddies past and present. Sally was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, St. Charles Altar Guild, American Legion Auxiliary, Little Missouri ARC and a bible study group. By BRYCE MARTIN Pioneer Editor Stephanie Pretzer, a democrat from Scranton, will face incumbent Sen. Bill Bowman, a republican from Bowman, for the District 39 State Senate seat Nov. 4.

Hear from them both and decide who you will pick.

Bill Bowman Question: What inspired you to see re-election?

Answer: I am passionate about my constituents, working with the oil issues, agriculture and diversity of issues in our great state. I want to work through the legislature to help increase the quality of life for the people in the state.

Q: Why do you think that you are suited to continue as the voice of the people?

A: I have the background and experience that best represents the people in my district.

Q: Do you believe that the legislature has been fair to western North Dakota? Why or why not?

A: I feel that in some ways the legislature has been fair, such as a balanced tax reduction across the state. I also believe that it has been unfair when it comes to the oil producing counties formula, because it does not cover the infrastructure costs that occur during the production phase.

Q: Obviously you have your own ideas and opinions for what should be changed or

kept the same – why do you think you voted and operated in the district’s best interest?

A: I have a genuine interest in the people of my district. I will communicate with anyone in our district that has an issue, mo matter the party, before I make an educated decision. When the opinion of the people is split on an issue I rely on my background, experience, and common sense to make the best decision for the people of my district.

Q: District 30 is a very large district. How do you prioritize your time to ensure representation over the entire district?

How do you reach out to the district to ensure visibility?

A: When I am traveling through the district I meet with whoever has an issue, and I follow up with an answer. I attend as many functions as I can, because I believe face to face conversation is the best way to understand what the people need. If I am unable to meet face to face, I am always willing to take a phone call.

Q: The negative effects indirectly and directly associated with the oil boom are widespread. How would you address those specific problems?

A: Some of the negative effects of the oil boom are pipeline breaks, salt water spills, and flaring. I work directly with the Public Service Commission, Industrial Commission, and the Department of Health, to solve the problems as quick as possible. Other negative

effects are infrastructure, increase in crime, the lack of affordable housing and daycare.

I have been addressing the infrastructure issues by increasing the impact funds available to the impacted areas. I have addressed the increase in criminal activity by amending the Attorney General’s budget and adding tem million dollars to help keep our people safe and to maintain our quality of life.

I will continue to work on increasing the incentives for affordable housing through the Bank of North Dakota.

Q: What are the three main issues that are facing the district?

A: It is difficult to choose three main issues, as our district faces many, but taxes, water projects, and school funding effect everyone in our district.

Q: How would you work to ensure (a) that North Dakota remains prosperous even after the oil booms has ceased and (b) how that state’s monetary surplus from oil revenues would fairly be distributed?

A: I believe that education our youth is the key to prosperity during and after the oil boom. I will support education that allows our students to think as individuals, because educated minds inspire ideas.

I support the Legacy Fund and as it continues to grow it will play a large part in directing the investments for our future.

The interest on the Legacy Fund could be distributed back through tax reduction, benefiting everyone.

Stephanie Pretzer Question: What inspired you to seek election?

Answer: I’m seeking elec-

tion because: I think my opponent has gotten too comfortable in the legislature and last legislative session he failed to adequately represent his constituents. District 39 deserves better. Also, I ran because I think competition is patriotic and nobody should run unopposed.

Q: Why do you think you’re suited to be the voice of the people?

A: I think right now western North Dakota lacks political balance. Due to the lack of

balance, the failure of our incumbents goes unnoticed. I am suited to be the voice of the people because I recognize the lack of balance and will use my voice and ideas to keep western ND a great place to live.

Further, I am smart, compassionate, and care more about passing impactful legislation than voting in accordance with party affiliation.

Q: Do you believe that the legislature has been fair for

Bowman County Pioneer western North Dakota? Why/ why not?

A: No. The entire state has benefited from the recent oil and gas exploration in western North Dakota. Yet, instead of real solutions the legislature has used a quick bandaid-like approach to address the impacts we face. During every session since 2009 proposals have been put forth to address the impacts and yet our legislature and my opponent have either not proposed any legislation to address funding for the west or voted against meaningful legislation to assist western North Dakota.

Q: Obviously you have your own ideas and opinions for what should be changed or kept the same – do you think your opponent has voted and operated in the district’s best interest? Why/why not?

A: No. Last session Senator Bowman voted to lower the Extraction tax, which would impact water projects and school funding for the future by costing the state billions. He was also one of two senators who voted against the funding bill that was passed. The bill that was passed was not the best bill, but Senator Bowman had the opportunity to make it a

better bill, which he failed to do. He absolutely failed to fight for the funding western North Dakota needs and that is unacceptable for an incumbent who has been in the legislature since 1991.

Q: District 39 is a very large district. How would you prioritize your time to ensure representation over the entire district? How would you reach out to the district to ensure visibility?

A: It is difficult, but once elected I will attend functions I am invited too. I will submit reports in the weekly newspapers and will use social media and a website to keep my constituents briefed on the happenings. I also will pick a different location every weekend during the session for constituents to stop by and visit about upcoming legislation.

Q: The negative effects indirectly and directly associated with the oil boom are widespread. How would you address those specific problems?

A: First we must significantly increase funding so we can adequately address the costs associated with the growing impacts. I would not be satisfied with anything less than 60% funding for oil producing

counties (a proposal my opponent conveniently introduced 40 days before the election, yet openly spoke out against similar legislation last session).

The outlying counties with less than $5 million in tax collections need to have a separate program for their impacts. Our schools face new construction and new challenges and we need to set aside the additional money over the 30% going into the Legacy Fund to provide funds for new construction and to address the new challenges.

We absolutely need a separate program for construction needs. We also need funding to address Emergency Services: Law Enforcement, Ambulance and Rural Fire Departments through the funding formula generated by the 5% gross production tax.

Q: What do you see as the three main issues facing the district?

A: 1) Infrastructure funding, 2)assistance for schools and early childhood development, and 3)property rights for landowners.

Teigen, Dodge vie for sheriff spot

Twenty-year incumbent, Sheriff Rory Teigen, will face off against write-in candidate Jason Dodge for Bowman County Sheriff next month.

Dodge, who will not formally appear on the ballot but has been campaigning as a writein candidate,brought up several criticisms of the sheriff’s department that he said he would set out to fix if elected. A top priority, said Dodge, is the department’s visibility around the county.

With no aspiration to become the leading law enforcement official in the county, Dodge instead had his sights set last December on an available position as a Bowman County deputy. A small group of people suggested Dodge become deputy; it was “a number I couldn’t really ignore,” he said.

His interview with the department, in April, was scheduled for the day after the deadline to file petition to be placed on the primary election ballot.

But it was never Dodge’s intention to file for the ballot because he simply wanted to land the job as deputy.

“At the time, I wasn’t even thinking about [running for sheriff],” he explained.

He applied and interviewed for the deputy position, but it ultimately went to another candidate, Jordan Fisher. When Dodge didn’t get that job, those people who favored him for

the deputy position went to the polls two months later and voted for him as a write-in candidate. He received 11 write-in votes.

Thus, his platform was born.

Dodge subsequently put himself through law enforcement academy over the summer to better prepare him for the position.

Dodge served in the U.S. Army as an infantry team leader and a gunner. He was tasked in Kosovo and Iraq to do policing in the early 2000s.

“I’ve seen the extreme side of policing, so to speak: Being shot at, getting blown up, arresting people,” he said, explaining that that added to his law enforcement experience.

Originally from Alliance, Neb., Dodge met his wife, Tressa Silha, while he attended North Dakota State University.

The two married and had two children, ages six and 10.

Silha was originally from Bowman County and the cou-

ple moved back to the area in 2001 and settled down, seven miles north of the city of Bowman.

He was convinced to run for sheriff because he heard from many within the community that the sheriff department wasn’t very visible.

“Being a citizen and a serviceman, part of doing your job is having a presence. This summer I learned, that’s pretty much 90 percent of policing is having a presence because that presence becomes a deterrent,” he said.

Teigen, who has worked for the sheriff’s department for eight years prior to being elected sheriff in 1995, explained that Bowman County is 1,170 sq. miles and having a deputy patrol that entire area for 24 hours every day would led into “outrageous” overtime, which would extend far beyond the department’s budget—a deputy has many more duties than just patrol. One to two deputies

are on duty at any given time.

“With the amount of area and the amount of county roads being covered as well as the other duties of the office, we try to be as visible as possible,” Teigen said.

Dodge previously worked as acting chief at the North Dakota State Women’s Prison in New England for about a year.

He left because the compensation didn’t justify the amount of added stress and work for a male officer in a women’s prison, he said.

He then began driving truck for a friend and eventually opened his own trucking company, Chicken Run Express, in 2011. That closed earlier this year after Dodge was involved in an accident with his truck and trailer south of Ludlow at the end of last year.

Now, he delivers tires for NW Tire in Bowman.

As a self-proclaimed “stickler for attention to detail,” Dodge mentioned his concern over the department’s overall public impression.

“I watch things very closely, especially appearance,” he said.

Dodge said that the deputies from Bowman County often appear in “disheleved” attire while on duty.

Teigen said he has a very professional staff.

“I apologize that my officers are not dressed to my opponent’s supposed standards,” Teigen said. “Our officers begin each day of their shift dressed neatly and appropriately. As

we never know what each day will bring, things such as removing dead animals from the road … to transporting prisoners who may spit at us to having to clean up defecations in our squad cars, we may not always have our boots polished or our star shined.

“But we are proud of our office and do the best job we can for our citizens.”

Teigen, who also serves on numerous local boards and is one of two officials in the state that sit on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Advisory Working Group Board, said he does not take his position as sheriff lightly.

“I feel the experience I bring to this office helps me do the best job I can to serve the citizens of Bowman County,” he said.

Through the year, Bowman County has seen growth in the economy, population and activity. So too has the department experienced growth. The department is currently working on establishing a reporting system that would streamline required reports. This program is being developed around law enforcement in Bowman County and the City of Bowman. That process, however, is not adding to the department’s budget because it’s going to be used as an example for the state.

“Budgets are always an issue.

We strive to keep our expenses down and quality of service up,” he said. “Protection of our citizens come first.”

By KAYLEE KINSEY Live Wire Reporter Live Wire 4-H met on Sept. 14 for their first meeting of the year at the Bowman County Library. Many things were discussed about the Bowman County Fair and the next year of 4-H. We discussed about enrollment online, selling wreaths, Helping Hands day, National 4H week and the Fling Thing. We also elected new officers, President is Kylee Hendrickson, Vice President is Lane Jeffers, Secretary is Amy Jeffers, Treasurer is Beau Jeffers, Reporter is

Kaylee Kinsey and Historian is Mikayla Bartholomay. After the meeting we went to KPOK Radio to record radio spots for National 4H week Oct. 5-11. Live Wire met for October on the 12th at the library. We discussed the Fling Thing craft show and who will work and bring pies and bars. Christmas wreath sales forms were handed out and then the group split up into groups and did a scavenger hunt around town going door to door collecting canned goods for the food pantry.

Our next meeting will be in November to pick up wreaths.

It was in 1930 that 4-H began in Bowman County, backed by the Agricultural Improvement Association, whose directors were C. Ensign, Dugald Stewart, Mrs. H.L. Pittsley, Mrs. Griffin, Mrs. H. Jagim, Eric Eren, Ole Lewis, W.B. Taylor, John Quam, and D.J. Beier.

By March, there were six 4-H clubs formed—two in Scranton, one in Rhame, and three in Gascoyne. Even through the thirties, when the drought and depression had Dakota staggering, the 4-H clubs were hanging in there with all sorts

of goings on. Corn and sheep were the big two to begin with, and the county started with a bang, winning the St. Sweepstakes Banner for corn and potatoes at Bismarck in 1931.

While there has been many changes through the years, the foundation of the 4-H program has remained the same --teaching life skills.

4-H is a non-formal education program and organization for youth ages five to 18.

The four “H’s” are defined in the 4-H creed: I Pledge, my HEAD to clearer thinking, my HEART to greater loyalty, my HANDS to larger service, and my HEALTH to better living for my club my community,

my country, and my world.

The purpose of 4-H is to enable young people to acquire knowledge, develop life skills and form attitudes that enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society.

The 4-H program is facilitated by the North Dakota State University Extension Service and the NDSU Bowman County Extension employees Andrea Bowman, JoAnn Runner and Sydnee Kidd.

The county currently has six clubs that are ran by adult volunteer leaders. Clubs meet throughout the year, conduct a business meeting and learn lessons, do activities and work

on group projects. Members choose specific 4-H projects to fit their own interests. 4-H projects are specific areas of planned experiences for young people to learn, such as training animals, making clothing, growing plants, or building rockets. 4-H projects are indepth leaning experiences for 4-H members. Curriculum is available to support a wide variety of project areas.

The 4-H program is most visible during the County Fair when youth have the opportunity to showcase the projects they have worked on.

It is fun to see what everyone has spent the last year working on. However, the 84 4-H

members and 11 4-H volunteer leaders work the entire year to fulfill the 4-H motto, “To Make the Best Better.”

“Being a 4-H leader is like being in a big family, you celebrate and learn together and become part of all the kids and parents lives.

It is so rewarding to watch any of them succeed in all the different areas of 4H and know you’re helping them grow,” Joy Kinsey, Livewire 4-H Leader and Bowman County 4-H alumni.

FFA heads to districts The Bowman County FFA members competed in the FFA District Leadership Contest on September 30, 2014, at Dickinson State University campus at the Badlands Activity Center along with nine other schools from Southwestern North Dakota.

The Parliamentary Procedure team received a Gold award and took 3rd place. The team had to complete opening and closing FFA ceremonies and perform two problem sets consisting of 10 parliamentary procedures in less

than ten minutes and thirty seconds.

Hearing for the first time Bowman woman becomes first female in N.D. to receive cochlear implant

Silence was a big part of Amanda Jo Johnson's life.

Until earlier this month, silence was partially all she could hear - the muffled speech of people walking by, the hushed cheers at sporting events, the dampened lyrics of her favorite band - she tried to live a life similar to others, but it proved difficult because she's deaf.

But her resilience shined through.

"She's tough," said Chris Johnson, her husband.

In September, Johnson, 32, of Bowman became the first female in the state to receive a cochlear implant, placed in her left ear. It was simply to be able to hear better, she said.

Johnson sat in a room on Oct. 4, filled with her family and friends, and awaited her doctor. It was a moment that would change how she perceived her world and surroundings. It was the first time the implant was turned on.

At the moment it was switched on, Johnson felt scared and since overwhelmed.

She and her mother let out cries. But all she could hear we're what she considered as loud sirens.

It was the first time she could hear out of that ear, but it wasn't what she expected. A lot of what she hears now is just white noise.

“It’s not just something that you see on TV where it automatically works,” Johnson said.

But, it was normal.

Prior to the implant, Johnson’s hearing level of her left ear was 16 percent, which is near complete deafness. Her right ear was at 65 percent, corrected by a hearing aid.

“I think it’s just so much different – she doesn’t say ‘what’ as much,” Chris said with a laugh.

“When we first came home, she didn’t think it worked because all she heard was buzzing and sirens. We played with it a little bit and now she’s starting to hear voices.”

A cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that can help to provide a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-

of-hearing. The implant consists of an external portion that sits behind the ear and a second portion that is surgically placed under the skin (see figure). An implant has a microphone, which picks up sound from the environment; a speech processor, which selects and arranges sounds picked up by the microphone; a transmitter and receiver/stimulator, which receive signals from the speech processor and convert them into electric impulses; and an electrode array, which is a group of electrodes that collects the impulses from the stimulator and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve.

According to the National Association of the Deaf, an implant does not restore normal hearing. Instead, it can give a deaf person a useful representation of sounds in the environment and help him or her to understand speech.

For the next several months, Johnson is under what she considers “probation,” the time until doctors have told her the device will render its entire effect.

Johnson previously wore a hearing aid on the left ear, like she does on the right, but couldn’t really hear much out of it. After the six-month period, Johnson’s hearing from her left ear will reach 95 percent. “[The] audible test was really promising; looks like it’s going to be perfect,” Chris said. “It just takes a while to train your brain.”

But a cochlear implant is not like a hearing aid, which only amplifies sound, “it’s a lot clearer,” she said, “crystal clear.”

An implant is essentially the opposite, which is made to clear the sound for Johnson to make more sense of her surroundings.

Dr. Joshua Yorgason, a doctor with Sanford Health in Bismarck, performed Johnson’s surgery. A big motivation for Johnson to get the surgery was because her husband’s insurance covered a large portion of the expensive, $100,000 surgery. It was also the hospital’s proximity to Bowman, with the nearest hospital honoring the surgery the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

The first procedure for Johnson was in September, when the internal portion of the implant was fastened. Doctors drilled a hole in her inner ear, removing the mastoid bone, and placed a wire leading into the cochlea.

An electrode was placed inside.

Ordered to rest for a month to ensure proper healing, Johnson could hear nothing from

her left ear.

A month later, the outer portion was fashioned and turned on.

Johnson was given a remote which controls the implant and adjusts it to her surroundings.

When in a noisy place, she can turn it down.

“It’s been a little overwhelming,” she said. “It’s a lot of work,

trying to adjust to the different noises.”

The tough part was returning to work at Subway, which the couple owns in Bowman.

A week after the device was turned on, it was necessary for her to return to work. “[It] was hard to adjust to working the line – when you rely on both your ears like that and then, all of a sudden, you just have one that’s partial that was a tough one,” Chris said.

Being deaf in society was difficult, Johnson said.

Her parents never put her in American Sign Language, which propelled Johnson to succeed and depend on lip reading and being able to hear out of her hearing aids.

“Nobody treated me any differently, I guess,” she said. “I was always the self conscious one.”

Johnson was in speech language class from age two until she graduated at 16.

Since then, she’s become an excellent lip reader.

“We’ll be watching football, he’ll be like, what did that coach say?” Johnson laughed.

“That’s awesome for football games, she can read lips on the side lines,” Chris added.

For Johnson, she’s looking forward most to being able to better hear her children.

Controlled drugs get regulation changes

On Oct. 6 the federal government made a change in how the drug Hydrocodone is regulated. Previously a Schedule II drug, Hydrocodone has been reclassified as a Schedule III. Other drugs classified as a Schedule III include Demerol, Fentanyl and Morphine. So

what does that mean?

The change comes on the recommendation from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. The basis for the change has to do with an overuse of the drug. But according to Greg Wolf, Pharmacist of Bowman Drug, those overuse numbers can also be attributed to other changes on the

market place, not just cases of abuse. In recent years other pain killing drugs have been removed from circulation, and that in the end results in more prescription orders for Hydrocodone.

Wolf also thinks that the changes could have a negative impact on the patients who really need the medication.

that it’s going to make it quite burdensome for patients with true pain,” Wolf said.

Some of the changes include how a prescription is filled.

Prescriptions for the pain killer will no longer be filled by a faxed in, or a phone in order.

Patients will have to go to the clinic and get the prescription and bring it to the pharmacy.

has also changed. Prior to the change, pharmacies could order it with other medicine.

Now it has to be separate and requires its own computer ordering system.

Prescription lengths have also changes. Previously a patient could be prescribed a 6-month supply, now that time frame has been cut to just 90 days.

In the end, patients who were accustomed to certain time frame when receiving the drug will have their routine altered. Though it is a measure aimed at curtailing abuse in the country, some people who really need the medicine could be the ones most affected by the change.

“People that are suffering true, legitimate pain have to go through a lot more hoop to get their medication,” Wolf said.

Could Ebola reach North Dakota

It’s a real concern considering the virus’s ease of spread, but doctors across the state, and the country are now installing preventative measures to assure medical assistance is ready whenever it may be needed.

Dr. Forrest Lanchbury, a medical doctor at Southwest Healthcare in Bowman, said quarantine and containment are the two real world practices to safeguard an ebola patient from further spreading the virus.

Mainstream media isn’t helping to ease citizens’ fear of being contaminated by ebola, and true discrepancies are being pointed out by medical facilities around the world, including the World Heath Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Ebola is strictly spread through direct contact with a contaminated person’s bodily fluids, including saliva, semen, blood, sweat and feces. Research of the virus has suggested a patient is not contagious to other humans unless they are showing symptoms, which occur anywhere from two to 21 days after infections, such as high fever, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, weakness, stomach pain and lack of ap-

The Ebola virus causes a serious illness which is often fatal if untreated. Ebola virus disease first appeared in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks, one in Nzara, Sudan, and the other in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the WHO. The latter occurred in a village near the Ebola River, from which the disease takes its name.

“If Ebola were to reach Bowman, the practice of quarantine and containment would be the most important practice to prevent spread of the virus,” Lanchbury said. “There is no effective treatment so recovery from infection is mainly dependent on an individual’s immune response to infection.”

As with any infectious disease, the most important thing is to contain the infection even if there is a specific treatment, he added.

The WHO and CDC have been on the forefront of dealing with the unprecedented ebola outbreak in western Africa. Since the very first ebola patient arrived inside the United States last month, several other cases spread quickly, infecting several others and potentially more.

One person, a man traveling from Liberia to Dallas, was infected with the disease and subsequently died – the first casualty from the ebola in the country’s borders.

The only drugs, experimental at this point and not approved by the Federal Drug Administration, proved effective in the treatment of two patients.

Since then, their quantities have been depleted.

The average mortality rate of Ebola is around 50 percent, but varies from 25 to 90 percent, according to Lanchbury.

“Community engagement

is key to successfully controlling outbreaks,” he said.

If an outbreak occurred in the Bowman area, good outbreak control would rely on applying a package of interventions, namely case management, surveillance and contact tracing, a good laboratory service, safe burials and social mobilization, he explained.

Early supportive care with rehydration, symptomatic treatment improves survival.

There is as yet no licensed treatment proven to neutralize the virus but a range of blood, immunological and drug therapies are under development.

“When comparing the countries affected by ebola in Africa it is very important to keep in mind that the most severely affected countries, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have very weak health systems. They lack human and infrastructural resources. These countries have had long periods of conflict and instability and are only recently emerging from this.

“I am very confident that given our excellent health care systems and resources in the United States and North Dakota, we could contain an Ebola outbreak quickly and have a much lower mortality rate in those individuals affected by Ebola,” he said.

In North Dakota, there is a plan in place to contain Ebola and trained personnel to carry it out.

Nor are we talking about a concrete structure that supports a building from underneath. Rather a foundation is an organization that is created and supported with money that people give, in order to do something that helps society. And what’s more important than the health of our society?

We are enthusiastic about the new direction of our Foundation here at West River, as

we move forward in developing partnerships with our area friends, patients, and business leaders. Of course, the key to a strong friendship or partnership is trust. And we are planning to gain and develop your trust with us over time, as we believe that West River Health Services (WRHS) and Western Horizons Living Centers (WHLC) are vital to your health and to the economies of our rural communities in Western Dakota. After all, if we don’t have our health, what do we have?

Our mission is to provide fundraising and development services to support West River Health Services and Western Horizons Living Centers as they provide comprehensive health and wellness services to the residents and visitors of the region. This more personal and comprehensive “teamwork

care” you receive at WRHS and WHLC is top-notch. What other healthcare provider travels to satellite clinics daily to care for their patients? Or comes to your home if necessary? Or is on call in the event of an emergency or accident? We all must stop taking these services for granted.

To start with, we think it’s important that we have commitment from within our organization. Therefore we are currently meeting with each of our top leaders at West River (Board of Director members, Administrators, Physicians, and Department Managers), soon to be followed by the balance of our employees. We hope to secure their membership into the Foundation, as they are the very best ambassadors we have – our entire staff at West River and Western Horizons. Next, we will be visiting

As a Foundation, our primary purpose is to purchase needed equipment and technology for WRHS and WHLC, thus helping the organization maintain its high standard of excellence in medical care. Per our Board of Directors approval this past week, we are moving forward with a new $3 million MRI machine and building. This project will provide our patients with the quality experience they expect from West River, hopefully by next spring/summer. No more going outside in the middle of winter to climb into a semi-truck for an MRI. No more waiting for the one day a week it shows up. No more having to take the next available hour. No more driving to Bismarck because the truck won’t be here for another

week. And our physicians and staff will be able to act quickly with their diagnosis, as the information will be readily available via our new MRI machine.

In order to provide this amazing service to our area, we need your help. Since we are a non-profit corporation (a registered 501 C (3) US Charitable organization and licensed by the state of ND), we rely on our area leaders and clubs to aid us in acquiring this state of the art technology. We will be contacting you in the next few months to consider being part of our MRI Campaign. What does PT mean to you?

To some, it may mean pain and torture. To others, it may mean peace and tranquility. To the medical community, PT can be the abbreviation to a few different terms. One of those terms is Physical Therapy.

In years past, Physical Therapy was provided by nurses or candy stripers in hospitals and nursing homes. Today, physical therapy is the leading profession in injury prevention and rehabilitation which includes everything from knee surgery to strokes to cerebral palsy to vertigo. And due, in part, to the beloved Baby Boomer population growing older, the job outlook in PT remains strong and climbing.

Physical Therapists are highly trained, licensed medical professionals with continuing education requirements to keep up on the latest medical breakthrough. Locally, at Southwest Healthcare Services in Bowman, we have grown our physical therapy practice and offer full time services to our community and the surrounding area.

We are staffed with two Physical Therapists with Doctorate Degrees and other specialty certifications including lymphedema and sound assisted soft tissue mobilization or SASTM, and a Physical Therapist Assistant. Our team provides services

at the hospital, long-term care, and outpatient facilities as well as providing sports medicine coverage at Bowman County High School.

Physical therapists have the luxury of spending anywhere from a half hour up to over an hour with our patients to learn about your physical goals and even more, your life. Some PTs specialize in orthopedics, pediatrics, spinal cord injuries, amputations, or wound care, just to name a few. Here, we are fortunate to be able to see a wide range of diagnoses and use all of the skills we learned in the 7, sometimes 8 years of post high school education. Yes, we most likely will have you do some exercises, but our “tool box” is full of many treatment options including modalities, such as ultrasound or electric stimulation, manual therapy, such as massage techniques or joint mobilization, as well as custom orthotic fabrication and gait analysis. Most PTs joke that their “therapy brain” never really shuts off. This can be unfortunate at times when you’re out with friends and bring up their posture is poor or you meet someone on the street on crutches and can’t help but wonder what they “had done.”

That is part of the joy of living in small town, rural America.

You get to treat your friends, neighbors, colleagues, previous teachers, their children, and your own family at times. We

are educators, medical professionals, therapists, and sometimes guinea pigs for the latest pie Mrs. Johnson tries out and we love it.

Just in time for Halloween: Headless Horseman races The annual Headless Horseman Barrel Race returns to Bowman this weekend, just in time to show-off that Halloween spirit.

The fifth annual race is a NWBRA, WPRA, and UBRA sanctioned event, with WPRA DC Finals to be held after open race on Sunday.

A minimum of $800 was added to average prizes for first through fourth place finishers.

The event's costume contest­—always a big hit

according to the event's organizers—will be held after the race on Saturday. There will be a horseback parade of costumed adults, 12 years old and under and groups.

Varsity ends season with 3 wins, 5 losses

The Bowman County varsity football team closed out its season at home against TrentonTrinity Christian (T-TC). It was an absolute gorgeous day, considering what we often can get on a Saturday in the second half of October. The wind was a slight factor, but other than that, it was a perfect day for football.

T-TC won the coin toss and chose to receive. They would go for it on 4th down on their first series, and the incomplete pass resulted in the Bulldogs starting from their 35-yard line. After two runs for no gain, a pitch around right end would go the distance and set the score to 6-0, after an unsuccessful 2-point conversion.

T-TC would answer right back with a 13-play drive that ended on a 4th-and-20 pass completion for a touchdown from the Bowman County 33-yard line.

Their rare PAT kick attempt was blocked, and the score was tied at 6. An on-side kick would

be recovered by the Bulldogs at the T-TC 49-yard line. An incomplete pass and two short runs would result in a 4th-andshort attempt. A false start penalty would move it back to 4th-and-long, and a punt from near midfield. T-TC would take over at their own 16-yard line.

On third down, a pass into the wind by the T-TC quarterback would hang up, and a Bulldog defender was able to swipe it away from their receiver at their 30-yard line. Seven plays later, the Bulldogs would score, but again, the elusive 2-point conversion pass was intercepted, making it 12-6, Bowman County. After a penalty on their kick return, T-TC would start deep in their own end. A couple of pass completions moved the ball out to near midfield, where the Bulldog defense would again intercept a pass at their own 35-yard line.

Four plays later the drive would stall on a fumble at the T-TC 15-yard line on the first play of the second quarter.

play to tie the score at 12. Their quarterback would scramble into the endzone on the 2-point conversion to take the lead at 14-12. Once again, the Dogs would come up with a nice kick return into T-TC territory at the 48-yard line. Seven plays later, including one 4th down pickup, the Bulldogs would take the lead back at 20-14. A great special teams kick off play would pin T-TC inside their own 15-yard line with time running short in the half. After an intentional grounding penalty and a shotgun snap sailing over the quarterback’s head, T-TC faced 4th and about 25. They came up just a yard short and turned it over on downs, giving Bowman County excellent field position again, at the T-TC 47yard line. Three good runs later, the Dogs put another one in the endzone and converted on the 2-point conversion to raise the lead to 28-14. On their fourth play, a completed pass ended in a fumble which the Bulldogs covered at their own 30-yard line. A nice long run was negated by a holding penalty, and the Dogs were forced to punt. T-TC would unfortunately snap another one over the quarterbacks head and their 4th-down effort would come up a little short once again. With only seconds remaining in the half, Bowman County would go into 2-minute mode and move the ball to the T-TC 15-yard line, but unfortunately the last pass of the half would miss the mark.

Bowman County would receive to start the second half and promptly go 3-and-out and punt. T-TC would take over at their own 22. Though they

would get a first down, a 4th down sack gave the Bulldogs the ball at the T-TC 39-yard line. A hard-fought drive, including some courageous runs and a 4th-down pass completion combined to cross the goal line, with the 2-point scramble successful again, to put the Dogs up 36-14. T-TC would put together a very impressive drive from its own 15-yard line, but would stall near the 40, and they decided to punt. The Bulldogs would take over at their own 23. T-TC would dig in on defense and capitalize on a sack to force a Bulldog punt. In a rare start near midfield, T-TC would take the drive into the 4th quarter.

On the fifth play, they would complete a pass for 50 yards and a touchdown. The incomplete 2-point pass moved the score to 36-20 with 11:35 remaining in the game. Just when it looked like the momentum may be swinging in T-TC’s favor, the Bulldogs returned the ensuing kick-off for a touchdown. The successful 2-point conversion gave the Dogs a little breathing room at 44-20 with 11:19 remaining. T-TC would return the kick-off to the Bowman County 35-yard line.

They would quickly capitalize on their best field position of the day, with a 25-yard touchdown pass 4 plays later. Their 2-point pass would sail incomplete, and the score would be 44-26. A penalty on the Bulldogs, following the touchdown resulted in T-TC kicking off from the Bowman County 45yard line, and the Dogs would return it to their own 38-yard line. A quick 3-and-out would

result in a punt to the T-TC 40-yard line. Fortunately, here the Bulldog defense dug in, and stopped them on 4th down to take over possession at the T-TC 43-yard line. Although we were only able to muster a

Bowman County would recover the onside kick and take a knee to end the game.

score was 40-20 and Richardton-Taylor finished second in Region 4 and will host St. John, the #3 team out of Region 3, on Oct. 25. Richardton-Taylor’s win also allowed Mott-Regent to move into the fourth and final playoff spot in Region 4.

Leading rushers for the Nighthawks was Pierce, with 62 yards, and Tanner Sanford with 56. Yates ended up going 10 for 17 in the passing department for 108 yards and one intercep-

tion. Yates is only a junior and his passing game has steadily improved as the season progressed.

The Raiders’ senior running backs Rebel and Jaden Schmidt did most of the damage for Richardton-Taylor as Rebel had 189 yards rushing, and Schmidt followed with 140. The Raiders had over 450 yards in total offense. They also have 11 seniors on their team, with eight of them being starters.

Hats off to their players and coaches, who had a great gameplan to give themselves the best chance to win. Though we were exhausted at different times, with the pace of the game and the warmth of the day, we had enough success early to withstand their push in the end.

I’m very proud of the Bulldogs and their efforts this season, especially the seven seniors. They’ve raised the bar for future players, and had a chance to be in the playoff hunt until the second-to-the-last game. It has been awhile, and it was nice to return to being a team that others had to watch out for.

I want to thank all of the parents and fans for their efforts to recognize the efforts of these young men, with their sup-

port at games at home and on the road, the suppers and sack lunches all season, and attending quarterback club meetings.

Though it didn’t end the way we may have dreamed, I think there are a lot of things we can all take great pride in this year.

Congratulations to the Junior Varsity and Jr. High teams on their very successful seasons. It looks like the future may continue to improve for the Maroon and White. Go Dogs!
