led noteworthy discussion. The first panel, composed of speakers spanning three generations, covered the different values of each generation and what they expect in the workplace. The second panel, Get Your Head Straight, covered mental health and productivity. Lastly, in the final panel, Happened Here: Happiness at Work, speakers shared their insights into positive work culture and its link to positive work outcomes.

This year, keynote speakers National Best Selling Author Doug Griffiths, Vice President of Global Innovation for Doosan Bobcat Joel Honeyman, and YouTube Celebrity Judson Laipply focused on the theme: EVOLVE. The goal of the theme, according to Doerr, was to encourage attendees to thrive in an ever-changing world.

“Our communities and businesses are changing,” said Doerr. “It’s important for us to consider these changes in order to grow.”

In addition to three keynote speakers, three dynamic panels tack-

Just last week, the world record chasers, Yonatan Belik and Michael Reid, passed through Bowman while on their journey to set the Guinness World Record for “Greatest distance on a 50cc scooter.”

In total, the two record chasers plan to travel 9,000 miles over 84 days to complete their journey. Belik and Reid started their quest on September 7 in Pennsylvania, and already they have conquered 3,000 miles and 19 states. Ideally, the two hope to complete their expedition by November 28.

According to Reid, their Honda Rocket motorized

scooters have a max speed of roughly 35 miles per hour. Reid said the speed limitation of the scooters has helped them to “appreciate the landscapes and the people.”

“That speed forces us to slowdown our thinking, our perspectives and really engage,” said Reid. “These scooters encourage us and almost force us to think about how to squeeze the most meaning out of the journey.”

Both Reid and Belik are traveling under the collective, Wheeling for the World. According to Belik, the collective is made up of “change makers” who seek to inspire and reach change through movement. The collective already has one Guinness World Record for the “Longest journey on a kick-scooter in 24 hours (by a team.)”

he Bowman County volleyball team has yet to lose to a regional opponent. In arguably one of their best seasons of the program, the lady Dawgs remain the top team in the region.

“We’re undefeated in the region and we’re undefeated against all class B schools in North Dakota,” head coach Jen Holecek said.

Despite their 9-0 overall record (5-0 in region play), Holecek said she and her coaching staff are trying to keep their team in the present, and not worry about what’s happened earlier in the season, or what could happen as the season winds down.

“I’m not thinking about [the record] a lot, to be honest with you,” Holecek said.

“Right now we need to focus on what we’re doing in the present and play a game at a time, and stay grounded.”

Much of their focus has not been on winning or losing particular games, but in trying to develop the best game strategies to make them successful, and they’ve been winning following this philosophy.

Though they try not to worry about what other teams are doing, she admitted that they have been monitoring Hettinger/ Scranton’s performances.

way has been excitement, excitement that they happen to be the top two teams in the region.

“That’s awesome, I’m really excited about that,” she said. “It’s fun having that next door neighbor be so good, it pushes you.”

A big part of their success, Holecek said, has been team unity. Though she said she expected her team’s cohesion to grow with each week of the season, her surprise is how fast that chemistry developed.

“I expected team unity...I didn’t expect it to be so

strong so early,” she said.

“In volleyball [team unity] is so incredibly important.”

Holecek noted that a team could have all the talent in the world, but would still falter if they didn’t have good chemistry.

Holecek said a nice surprise has been how fast her sub-varsity teams have developed. She again said that she expected development, but not at the quick rate she’s seen so far this year. The quality of their B and C squads have helped prepare the varsity team for their matches.

“They’re really giving [the] varsity some strong competition in practice,” she said.

As the past the middle part of the 2019 season, Holecek said she would like to see her team improve two parts of their game, their serving and their transitions.

Bowman County has about a month left of regular season play before the regional tournament starts.

The team is willing to do what they need to succeed, Holecek said. And they have the drive and the ability to

n their first season since moving up to the Class A football division, the Shiloh Christian Skyhawks won their first six games.

But not their seventh.

In a battle of two of the top Region 4 teams, the Bowman County Bulldogs came away with the 34-6 win over the parochial school on their home field on a cool Friday evening thanks to a big game by senior Jacob Svihovec.

Svihovec would run for 217 yards and four touchdowns.

After averaging more than 38 points per game through the first six of the season, the Skyhawks were only able to put up a meager six points against a stout Bulldog defense.

And their lone score wasn’t even a result of a successful offensive drive; it was the result of a Svihovec fumble and Skyhawk recovery in the endzone.

Regardless of the size of their front line, they didn’t see conditioned enough to stop Svihovec. He carried the ball early and often, especially after sophomore speedster Brody Headley went down with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

Though he would eventually return and ran for 61 yards and a touchdown. Junior Colby Schaaf filled in as the lead back until Headley was able to return. Schaaf ran for 13 yards and was an integral part of the blocking scheme for Svihovec.

Svihovec tiptoed through the line like he was

walking on hot coals. And even when he couldn’t find a hole, he and his line muscled through the defense multiple times.

Bowman County’s run game was working so well that they limited the amount of throws the coaching staff called for Svihovec. He completed four passes on just eight attempts. One, his longest, hit senior Matt Osendorf for 33 yards. Osendorf was the leading receiver for the Bulldogs with 35 yards on just three catches. Junior Caleb Duffield returned to catch one pass for two yards after missing the previous four games. He was injured in the season opener against Oakes.

On the defensive side of the ball Svihovec, Duffield, and senior Mitch Stuber each finished with four tackles, while Headley grabbed an interception.

Senior Andrew Narum finished the game with three tackles for a loss and a forced fumble. Junior Brady Senn also recorded a tackle for a loss.

The Bulldogs are home again to face Richardton-Taylor-Hebron, then

finish the season against New Salem/Almont in New Salem on Friday, Oct. 19 before the playoffs start Oct. 26.

Both Reid and Belik acknowledged that their trip comes with inherent risks. To avoid poor weather conditions, the two planned their trip with the intention of traversing the colder, northern states first. Once they reach the west coast states, they plan to travel south to more acclimate weather.

Despite their plans, they have already run into unexpected weather conditions. Already, a mild snow forced the two travelers to stay in Bowman longer than planned.

“Of course we are worried about [the weather], but it’s not consuming,” said Reid. “At the end of the day, there are so many factors we should also worry about like being hit by a car, or a tire blowing out in the road, or

getting stung in the face by a bee, or getting attacked by a bear.”

Reid continued, “There are so many reasons we shouldn’t be doing this. There are so many reasons we should be on our couches in a safe space. But with going out and pursing your dreams and living your passion, you have to accept some being uncomfortable – some level of risk, and we embrace that risk.”

Ultimately, Reid said that he plans on reaching his goal no matter the conditions.

“Our motto is, unless we literally have to stop, we will

continue on at any cost. We have to keep going,” he said.

Overall, Belik expressed that their unexpected stay in Bowman was exemplary. Thanks to community generosity, Reid and Belik were able wait out the cold weather and snow in a guest apartment above the Arqueros Mexican Restaurant for two days “Bowman has been amazing,” said Belik. “We really feel like Bowman is home for us, which is absolutely wild to think. But that’s the beauty of this trip: getting to know the people.”

From Field to Fork: Celebrating Pasta Month STAFF REPORT

F

or nearly three decades the North Dakota Wheat Commission has celebrated National Pasta Month in October as a way to recognize the state’s dedicated durum producers and the associated durum milling and pasta manufacturing industries. To help celebrate Pasta Month and educate consumers on the importance of durum and pasta production, the Commission will be partnering with statewide media to provide durum and pasta facts and trivia. Participating newspapers and radio stations will provide opportunities for readers and listeners to win a pasta prize package. This year’s theme – From Field to Fork – focuses on the process of bringing the durum from the field to the pasta on consumer’s plates.

Durum is a unique crop.

Production is relatively small compared to other classes of wheat, account-

ing for only three percent of total U.S. production on average. The area where it is grown is also somewhat concentrated – the bulk of acres in western North Dakota and eastern Montana.

A smaller acreage of Desert Durum is grown in Arizona and California. Durum prefers drier conditions and a less humid environment due to disease susceptibility and the need to preserve color and hard count during harvest, a main reason why the geographical production area is smaller. North Dakota durum acres have declined in recent years due to both local and world dynamics, however, the producers growing durum remain as dedicated as ever to producing a quality product to make premium pasta products. On average producers in North Dakota grow enough durum to make about two billion pounds of pasta!

Durum is the hardest of all wheats and its rich amber color, high protein, and high gluten content make it the gold standard

for producing premium pasta products. Producing durum with those strong quality traits can be difficult in years when weather isn’t ideal in producing a good crop, something both producers and the industry must work through. Durum is milled into semolina and mixed with water to form various pasta shapes.

Pasta can be combined with delicious sauces, vegetables and various proteins to make a wide variety of nutritious pasta dishes. In the Mediterranean Region and North Africa, semolina from durum is prized for cous cous and some breads.

A good share of our production is processed in-state at one of these facilities: Minot Milling, a division of Philadelphia Macaroni located in Minot, N.D.; Dakota Growers Pasta Company located in Carrington, N.D.; and the North Dakota Mill in Grand Forks. North Dakota durum is also sent out of state to mills throughout the United States, and to customers around the world. Italy,

Algeria, and Nigeria are the largest international buyers, but North Dakota durum also finds its way to smaller markets in Central America and Europe.

The results show that there is a strong need for additional daycare in Scranton, even though we have added Lil’ Starz Daycare. The council is planning to install surveillance cameras around the city. The Bowman County property appraisals for Scranton will continue for the next couple months. Work continues on Lil’ Starz Daycare.

LeeAnn plans to open by September 3rd. Community Day went very well. Discussion was held on what we could improve on for next time. The city planned for 300 but served 450. Commissioner Teske presented a motion to sell surplus property consisting of a 2755 JD tractor, a ’84 Chevy pickup, and a ’87 Ford F250 pickup at the upcoming Pifer Auction sale in Bowman. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Ouradnik and passed with Teske and Ouradnik voting in favor and Sonsalla opposed.

Discussion was held with Nathan Miller, Slope County Road Foreman, on graveling 4 miles of 59th Street SW with gravel purchased from Doug Fitterer at $7 per yard.

Commissioner Sonsalla presented a motion to place Sue Juntunen on the zone social service board as a representative from Slope County. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Ouradnik and passed with all voting in favor.

The commission has received a verbal resignation from Gordon Schmitt concerning his position on the Water Resource Board effective at the end of the year.

A public hearing was held for the planned road work on 140th Avenue and 74th St. Present to help answer questions was Billy Doerr, Brosz Engineering.

Richard Frederick, Slope County Emergency Manager, and Nathan Miller, Slope County Road Foreman, met with the commissioners to discuss bidding on a tanker truck that the Baker Fire Department is selling on bids that could be used by both the Amidon Fire Department and the county road crew. The Commissioners authorized a bid of $22,600.

Billy Doerr, Brosz Engineering, met with the commissioners to discuss the 140th Ave road project.

Commissioner Sonsalla presented a motion to approve change order #2 and payment application #2 for the 140th Ave SW road project. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Teske and passed with all voting in favor.

Equipment Registration Number Used for Identification Hunters, trappers and anglers are reminded that an equipment registration number, or the individual’s name, address and telephone number, must be displayed on

all equipment requiring identification.

While on state wildlife management areas, identification is required on items such as ground blinds, tree stands, cameras and traps.

Identification must be attached to cable devices that are set on either private or public land, and on fish houses left unattended on the ice.

Owners can generate an equipment registration number by visiting buy and apply at the North Dakota Game and Fish Department website, gf.nd.gov. One registration number will be issued that can be used on all equipment that requires identification.

about 327,000 roosters, which was a bit higher than the annual harvest in 2017.

Starting Saturday, Oct. 12, hunters can begin the 2019 version of the state’s pheasant season, and if preseason predictions pan out, the numbers might just go up again.

State Game and Fish Department upland game biologist R.J. Gross said recently that the agency’s late summer upland game brood survey indicates total pheasants observed statewide were up 10% from last year.

In addition, the number of pheasant broods observed was up 17%.

“This was the first year in a while that we’ve had good residual cover to start the year, and good weather for nesting and brood-rearing,” Gross said.

The survey covers more than 100 different 20-mile routes spread throughout the state. “They're

Permit Required to Possess Dead Deer North Dakota Game and Fish Department enforcement personnel are issuing a reminder that a permit is required before taking possession of a dead deer found near a road or in a field.

Only shed antlers can be possessed without a permit.

Permits to possess are free and available from game wardens and local law enforcement offices.

In addition, hunters are reminded to properly dispose of dead deer. Deer carcasses cannot be left on the side of a roadway or in a ditch, and deer parts cannot be discarded in commercial dumpsters.

“They’re just not spreading out to the marginal habitats like they used to,” Gross said As you take the field this fall, understand there is variability from region to region and county to county. Your favorite pheasant field may produce a few more birds, or perhaps your walks won’t be as productive as you expected.

Either way, it’s still pheasant season, a time that avid bird hunters anticipate year-round. And it doesn’t close until Jan. 5, 2020.

Medicare open National 4H Week, enrollment scams Oct. 6 - 12 STAFF REPORT

s Medicare beneficiaries pore over their choices for coverage for everything from medical services to prescription drugs, the open enrollment period is prime time for fraudsters to try to scam older consumers.

Medicare’s open enrollment begins October 15 and runs through December 7.

Here are some common scams during open enrollment: • Someone calls claiming to be from Medicare and says your Medicare number and credit card information are needed to sign you up for health coverage. Hang up the phone.

Medicare does not call beneficiaries to sign them up.

• Someone calls saying you have to sign up for a Part D prescription drug plan or you’ll lose your Medicare coverage. Again, hang up the phone. Buying a Part D plan is completely

voluntary and has nothing to do with the rest of your Medicare coverage.

• Someone calls claiming to be a Medicare representative and says your billing information must be confirmed to keep your coverage active. Again, hang up. Medicare employees will not cold-call you and are not allowed to ask for payment information on the phone or online.

• Someone calls asking for your Medicare number to update your account and to send you the latest open enrollment information. Stop. Do not give out your Medicare number or any other personal information over the phone.

• A scammer calls a Medicare beneficiary to notify them that they are owed a refund because they’ve reached the prescription drug coverage gap known as the “donut hole.” Of course, the catch is that you must provide your birth date, Social Security number, bank account and Medicare

numbers so the refund can be automatically deposited into your checking account.

Medicare will never call and asking for this information.

Guard your personal information. Treat Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security numbers like a credit card number, and never give these out to a stranger.

The best place to get information about your Medicare coverage or enrollment is either online at Medicare. gov or by calling the Medicare hotline at 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227).

Hello, You can read lots of economic forecasts. And many of them tell of an impending recession. I suppose you can put the blame wherever you want, but it seems we have recessions every ten years or so. It happens.

I don’t need to read of an oncoming recession. If you are in agriculture, the recession has been here for years. Maybe it is a depression. I guess it is a fine line. But the easiest way for me to forecast the economy it is how I deal with many purchases. We revert to one of the oldest, truest forms of capitalism. The barter system.

Now the barter system is pretty simple. If I have something you need, and you have something I need, or desire, you strike up a trade.

For example: Last week a neighbor had stopped by for coffee. While we were visiting, Shirley instructed me to go to town and buy some plywood to patch up a pen in our barn. I was reluctant to do it, because I had a couple used pallets that could fill the hole.

The neighbor jumped in and said he had bought a pile of junk at an auction sale for $2.50 that would have something in there that would work. I was a little uneasy buying junk from a

neighbor to patch up my yard, but what the heck.

We went down to his place and picked up three gates that could fill holes at our place.

Three gates that were older than me, and I have gone around the sun seventy times. But they were free.

Well, they weren’t free.

Shirley made up a package of vegetables from the garden to swap.

Fresh from the garden. A garden I have slaved over for months.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, carrots, squash, and zucchini.

Oh, and peppers. Wonderful peppers.

But the deal was made.

You can’t back out on a deal.

Especially if your wife has struck the deal.

Later in the week, the neighbor and I were making a hay trade. Trading a bale of hay for a pitchfork with a broken handle. I had spotted the fork while we were loading the antique gates. And I had a perfectly good handle at home.

I was being pretty tough in my negotiations and wanted the broken fork for nothing. It had been in the pile of junk that the gates came in so I figured it was paid for already.

He quickly reminded me that he had, out of the goodness

of his heart, offered me those gates for nothing. I quickly reminded him that Shirley had given him a hundred dollars worth the fresh vegetables for gates that had cost him a fraction of $2.50! He said what he paid for those outstanding gates had nothing to do with what he sold them for.

You can imagine the disappointment Shirley felt when she came outside and found two old men wrestling in the mud over a pitchfork with a broken handle!

Maybe you are right. She could have married better.

Annabelle was born August 23, 1937 to Henry Gatzke and Rocella (Anderson) Gatzke of Amidon, ND. Annabelle attended

grade school in a little country school outside of New England and graduated High School from New England High. She attended Dickinson State College and began teaching.

She taught in a little country school outside New England for four years before getting married.

Annabelle married Vernon Leslie Fuchs of Burt, ND on July 22, 1959. They started their lives together in Bowman. They moved to the Stegner Ranch,

Rhame, ND in approximately 1962 where Vernon worked as a ranch hand and there, they raised three boys; David, Ray and Timothy.

Annabelle got tired of the ranch life and while Vernon worked on the ranch, they bought the Trail Motel in Bowman, ND. They lived there until buying the Best Western 4U Motel in Bowman, ND in 1987.

She retired from the motel business in 1998 and lived out her days in Bowman.

She enjoyed gardening and Homemaking while on the farm. She loved doing crochet canvas, latch-hook rugs, reading and puzzles. She also loved to travel when she could and visiting with family.

She is preceded in death by both her parents, her son David, brothers; Robert, Richard, Darryl, Herbert, Arthur, Clifford and sister, Mildred.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Vernon Fuchs, sons and daughters in laws,

Ray and Mary (Cudmore) Fuchs, Bowman, ND and Tim and Vanessa (Haas) Fuchs, Aurora, CO. Grandchildren; Bryant, Brenton, Bonnie, Brianna, Bethany, Becki and great grandchildren Haylie, Landon and Carson, sister Barbara Schneider of Glen Ullin, brothers, Gordon (Lorraine) Gatzke of Mandan and Ben (Anita) Gatzke of New England.

Krebsbach and Kulseth Funeral Services are in charge of the arrangements.

ne of Bowman’s local dental hygienists was recently given the Distinguished Service Award by the North Dakota Dental Hygienists Association.

Prairie Dental hygienist Dana Schmit was nominated for her many years of service to dental hygiene and to the association itself. Having been a member of the NDDHA since 2007, she has held many positions and been a part of multiple committees with the

North Dakota state legislature, representing the North Dakota Dental Hygienists.

Schmit has worked with Dr. Pat Kelly and Dr. Jen Sarsland at Prairie Dental for eight years.

“Dana is a great asset to our team. She is very friendly and kind to our patients,” Sarsland said. “[She] is also great at keeping up with the latest in continuing education.”

Nominations for this award were submitted to the North Dakota Dental Hygienists Association by fellow hygienists around the state.
