State’s gas average at level not seen since 2004 The average price for a gallon of gasoline in North Dakota has fallen to a level not seen since 2004, according to AAA. According to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report, today’s statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in North Dakota has slipped to $1.683.

The last time the average was lower was on March 1, 2004, when it stood at $1681, says AAA. The statewide average for diesel has also fallen below $2.00 a gallon for the first time since January 2005. It is currently $1.951.

The averages for Fargo and Bismarck fell to 12-year lows last week. Currently those averages stand at $1.52 and $1.656, respectively.

In Bismarck the average is $1.72. On Dec. 17, 2008, the metro average hit a multi-year low of $1.63.

For the month of January, the statewide average for a gallon of gas was $1.83. In 2015 the monthly average was $2.097.

“Barring any significant disruptions in supply, AAA expects the annual average for 2016 to be the lowest in more than a decade,” said Gene LaDoucer, North Dakota spokesman for AAA-The Auto Club Group.

“Prices are likely to begin to move higher in the coming weeks though as the refinery maintenance season gets under way leading up to the changeover to the production of summer-blend fuel.”

Hettinger native makes NDSCS Fall Honor Roll The North Dakota State College of Science has named 420 students to its fall semester 2015 President’s Honor List.

The Honor List recognizes students who have achieved grade point averages of 3.5 or higher while taking at least 12 credit hours. The honorees include Hettinger native Codi Tomac. Tomas is studying Diesel Technology at NDSCS.

Baesler: School Aid Safe From Budget Cuts School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler said Monday that a 4.05 percent state budget cut will not impact North Dakota local school district funding.

As approved by the 2015 Legislature, the Department of Public Instruction’s 2015-17 budget includes almost $2 billion in state aid to school districts. The amount includes $1.92 billion in per-student aid payments, $57 million in transportation assistance, and $17.3 million for schools’ special education costs.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple and the state budget director, Pam Sharp, said Monday that reductions in those amounts will be offset by transferring $71.8 million from the Foundation Aid Stabilization Fund. North Dakota voters established the fund in 1994 to guard against the possibility that the education of K-12 students would be affected by an economic downturn.

“Thankfully, we have a reserve fund in place to take care of our schools in case there are declines in state revenues,” Baesler said. “Our schools will be receiving the state aid they have budgeted for.”

The Foundation Aid Stabilization Fund now has $656.3 million.

The 4.05 percent budget reduction, which the governor announced Monday, will require the Department of Public Instruction to cut almost $2 million in administrative expenditures. Those are separate from the DPI’s state school aid budget.

“We will be taking a close look at the department’s budget, and identifying opportunities for reductions that will have the least impact on student education services,” Baesler said.

A new state revenue forecast, made public Monday, estimates that general fund revenues will be $1.074 billion short from what the Legislature anticipated last March, shortly before lawmakers finished their work on the 2015-17 budget.

The spending plan included $5.64 billion in expected general fund tax collections, a figure that includes taxes on oil, coal, sales, income and corporations. The new forecast reduces those expected revenues by 19 percent, to $4.6 billion. Most of the decrease is being blamed on the effects of plummeting oil prices.

State park reservations begin February 16 It’s time to start planning for the 2016 camping season in North Dakota as the reservation system for state park camping sites opens Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 7 a.m. Central Time, allowing reservations to be made 95-days out. So you have to piecemeal the work, allowing minimal displacement of the residents. And doing the project in steps, work can be done as funds come in, it doesn’t have to wait to accrue all $145,500.

The $145,000 doesn’t have much room for debate, Uecker said the project was quoted at about a 10 percent contingency, so the amount the Foundation is raising is very close to what they think it will take to complete the room improvements.

“We are running this absolutely at what we think it will cost,” Uecker said.

“We’re trying to raise ex-

The Foundation has a plan of attack for fundraising efforts; starting at the top with the Board of Director members of Wester Horizon Living Center, West River Health Services and West River Health Foundation, and trickling all the way down to businesses, organizations and individual community members from the surrounding area.

In the near future, Hettinger and the surrounding communities will start to see outreach material.

Information on the project will be present and residents will be able to know what’s going on, and what they can do to help. Different fundraising events will be advertised and in-

formation will be shared accordingly.

Donators giving $2,500 to $4,000 will be able to sponsor a room, but Uecker said any amount or type of giving is appreciated.

“We’re open to any gift, we’ve always based our principals at the foundation on we don’t tell people what to give, every gift is important and you can give what ever you want.,” Uecker said “We respect every gift.”

The Foundation has raised enough money for work to begin. The first

section to be renovated will be the north east wing of the facility, and Director Mark Prischmann has been given the green light to start.

Uecker reiterated his desire to make the facility as good as it can be. With this campaign and fundraising, the improvements will give the residents a new, warm feeling about where they are living.

“We want people to feel good about where they are at,” Uecker said. “I just think it will really make our residents feel better.”

HHS FBLA Members Host Community Blood Drive

Mr. History visits Hettinger Elementary On Tuesday, Jan. 19 Mr. History came to Hettinger Elementary and drew out the history of the Dakota Territory. Mr. History—real name Scott Specig from Fargo—began with the Dakota Indians moving and onto how the rail-

road played an important role in the history of the state. He Ended his presentation by telling the students how Matthew Hettinger named Hettinger.

The presentation was 40 min and Specig used chalk to draw.

Students will remember how the histories like a drawing through time.

Specig travels around the state talking about North Dakota’s history and how individual towns got their names.

Specig is part of Dakota Assemblies.

Every year the Hettinger FBLA chapter holds a community blood drive. The Blood Drive committee met with Linda Ehli, a United Blood Services Representative, the first week of December to discuss details of the project which was held on January 27, 2015.

Over the course of the next month and a half, committee members called over 100 community members asking them to make an appointment to donate blood. Nearly all appointments were filled by the time of blood drive and they were also able to accommodate the many walk-in appointments as well. The FBLA chapter and the HHS FACS classes provided refreshments and homemade goods for the

donors.

FBLA members greeted potential donors at the door and assisted the United Blood Services team with various tasks throughout the day. At the end of the day, there were 36 procedures and 48 products delivered, including 12 doubles. FBLA exceeded their goals!

Blood is in high demand in the winter months when there is a shortage of blood drives. United Blood Services always expresses immense thanks for the FBLA blood drive held annually in the month of January. FBLA committee chairperson, Sam Reuther, wishes to thank all of the donors who came and supported the Hettinger FBLA chapter and United Blood Services!

My bill, SB 60 to set daylight savings time as the permanent yearround time for the state of South Dakota that was passed out of committee died on the Senate floor because two Senators were gone. The vote was 17 for and 16 against.

18 yes votes are needed to pass a bill and absent legislators are counted as no votes, so even though it had a majority of those present, a bill needs a majority of those elected to pass. At several events we attended over the weekend lots of people asked if we were going to get the bill passed, so Rep. Elizabeth May or Rep. Sam Marty, who was the House prime of SB 60, might sponsor a different version of it in the House.

sponsor of another bill that passed unanimously out of House State Affairs committee on Wednesday. Rep. Mike Verchio is the House prime sponsor of HB 1065 that designates the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum of South Dakota in Hill City as the official Civilian Conservation Corps Museum of South Dakota.

I would add that there is no state money involved in this. Hill City built the museum and raised the money to pay for it.

My father, Bryce White, served at a CCC camp in the Black Hills in the late 1930s before he joined the army in February of 1941 and he had some good stories to tell about the work they did.

Don’t you just love a January thaw? The temperature at the ranch on Thursday was 53 degrees and I drove home from Pierre late that afternoon into one of the most beautiful sunsets we’ve seen in a long time. Most of the snow has melted and now we wear overshoes because of the mud instead of the snow. The wind

was so strong Friday and Saturday that it was hard to keep laundry on the clothesline, but it sure got dry fast!

This was the third week of session and the legislature has finally kicked into high gear. 170 more bills have been filed since last Friday, however total bill filings are down from historical averages. As of Friday morning, 299 bills have been filed compared to 348 bills filed by this time in 2015. Legislators have until February 2nd to file up to two more bills in LRC and there are still some more circulating.

Hat Tips bolt until my hands were raw. I could stub my toe and throw a chair across the living room. I could turn into the Incredible Hulk and destroy a chain that pinched my fingers.

But over the years I’ve mellowed. I don’t often get mad. But when I do…I may get mad at my partner in pinochle. I may get upset at the wire stretcher if that little spring falls off and it won’t grab the wire.

But I know now to replace the spring, rather than throw the stretcher in the briar patch.

This weekend, for a brief instant I lost it. Only for a brief instant.

Hello, I’m a patient man. I’m much more patient than I was 30 or 40 years ago.

I used to blow up at the smallest things. Not animals. Well, once in awhile.

Not people. Well, occasionally. But I’d get mad at inanimate objects.

I could throw a chain saw farther than some people can throw a football. I could take a hammer and beat on a rusty

I suppose thirty or forty years ago, I would have thought it was a heck of a deal. I had one beer with some friends and decided I would rather go sit by the pool at the motel and relax. I could grab a cool drink, enjoy watching the grandkids, and visit with some neighbors and friends. Sounds good doesn’t it.

Jen called and asked

Shirley and I to bring some bottled water to the motel so they could take it up to the room or poolside. I’ve good kids. They drink water. We stopped at a convenience store and bought a few bottles of water. I could envision my kids floating around the pool, while I sat by an umbrella and sipped on an adult drink. And talked about how great we once were.

I walked into the pool area. My God! There were a thousand screaming kids. There were at least five hundred that looked like my grandkids. The waterfall was roaring.

The thousand kids. No, two thousand kids were

screaming. The river was flowing. It was steaming hot. And I had my winter coat on! There was no empty table to sit down and talk about how great I was. People were hollering and waving and climbing stairs and coming down the water slide and frogs were spraying water and the floor was slippery and it was hot and steamy and I started to get claustrophobic and hyperventilating.

Shirley has seen this before. I started to turn green and trembling. There were fat kids and skinny kids.

Big kids and little kids.

There were at least five hundred that looked like my grandkids.

I lost it. I threw my sack with the bottled water down and the bottles skidded across the floor and hit an elderly lady in the ankle. She turned and looked at me and I quickly pointed at this fat little kid that was standing beside me. She just glared at him and didn’t hit him. Thank goodness.

Shirley walked over and apologized and picked up the bottles and came back to me. She had that look in her eye. You know. That look.

“Will you ever grow up?”

Darn, I hope not. And I’m not going back to the water park either.

Writer’s note: On April 15, 1993, a freak accident claimed the lives of my cousins, Collin 18 and Greg 21, when they fell from a tree. No one knows for sure why they were up there—maybe just to relive old times in a favorite tree.

Later that summer my Uncle Allen and I laid them to rest. TB I sat on the boulder, a mile higher than I had been yesterday. The morning sun shone, and the mountain meadow deep below the jagged rocks of LaCrosse Pass glowed with a deep green. Bright yellow, white and crimson blooms stood resilient, as important as the towering peaks and ice blue glaciers in the distance.

I reflected here in these Olympic Mountains. I exalted in the back-breaking climb, and I grieved for the reason we were here.

Collin had first climbed this pass when he was about 12, his father told me as we ascended. The boy had seen the forbidding route and fretted. “Go on,” my uncle had told him, “And if you get scared, we can turn around.” The boy didn’t turn around, and in the years to come he had become a man, a formidable mountain man, carrying fifty pound packs, looking for bears to wrestle, his fear a distant memory.

But now free-spirited Collin was a memory too.

When asked if she sees politics in her future, she said it is a possibility.

“I wouldn’t be oppose to it,” Melling said.

But she has already put herself in the political field. Though she was appointed to the state’s attorney position now, she will have to actually run for election in November when the term she was appointed to is up. Melling said she plans to run.

She has enjoyed her work, and enjoyed the people she has already interacted with.

“Slope County is wonderful, the people are wonderful,” Melling said.

In her spare time she enjoys traveling, live music and fishing. She grew up in agriculture and still enjoys being around the industry, in and out of the courtroom.

Her schedule puts her at the Slope County Courthouse once a week on Wednesdays. She said she will be at the courthouse whenever she is needed, but video conferencing al-

Nighthawk basketball teams both down Harding County

By SHELDON CHRISTENSON For the Pioneer Harding County came to Scranton on Dec. 18 and 19 to take on the Nighthawk boys and girls’ basketball teams, and left going 0-2 for their efforts.

Hettinger-Scranton’s boy’s basketball team faced the Ranchers first and pulled out a 64-62 win. The Nighthawk’s full court pressure initially gave the Ranchers trouble as they quickly fell behind 12-0. On top

of that, their 6’4” center Mason Teigen left the game late in the first quarter with three fouls and would not return until the 2nd half. The Nighthawks built a 13-point lead at the end of the first half which was highlighted by a buzzer-beating long range 3-point shot by Haden Sadowsky, which made the score 38-25.

With the return of Teigen in the second half, better shooting and rebounding, they outscored Hettinger/Scranton 37-

26 but the Ranchers fell just short by two points.

They had a chance to tie the game with less than a minute to go but, Sam Kludt blocked a close in shot by Teigen which more than likely saved the game from being tied.

The Ranchers got the ball back with 10 seconds left but could not get off a good shot.

Kludt was having a problem finding his shooting touch but his blocked shot was definitely one of the key moments for the

It was a great night for high school wrestling, two good teams, parent’s night and a large crowd. This was also the first time that a wrestling match was conducted at Scranton. It was special for stand out Night Hawk wrestler Colbey Steeke who is a senior and attends school at Scranton.

When they introduced the wrestlers along with the parents Colbey and his parents, Misty and Trevor Steeke, received the loudest ovation from the crowd.

The top match of the evening was Steeke vs Jake Belland, the No. 1 and No. 2 rated wrestlers in Class B in the state at 220 weight class. Steeke came out on top with a 5-0 decision.

The Night Hawk wrestlers really stepped up and the match ended pretty much one-sided as they downed the Watford City Wolves 49-18. They won 10 of the 14 weight classes with two coming from Watford City forfeits.

The win maintains the Night Hawks first place standing in Region 4 with a 5-0 record. The Wolves dropped to 2-3 in the region. But regular season records won’t matter for seeding the top two teams who will then advance to the state tourney. The Region 4 dual tournament scheduled for Feb. 5 at Killdeer will decide the top two dual teams.

It is not unusual for the make-up of a team to change at this time due to injuries, either a wrestler not able to compete or a wrestler coming off an injury. Currently the Night Hawks and Beulah-Hazen are favored to finish in the top two positions.

into 16 turnovers for the half.

It was a team effort but Molly Holt, Abbie Kludt and Taylor Burwick led the charge. They had the crowd up and cheering loudly on every shot they made that brought them closer, and eventually pull ahead.

There is no doubt the crowd energized the girls in the second half as they pulled off a 36-29 win. If you missed this game you missed a good one. It may not have been pretty at times but it was exciting.

Holt paced the Night Hawks with 11 counters, Burwick had 10 and Kludt added 7 along with a team leading 7 rebounds and 9 steals.

The junior varsity was a close game with Heart River holding the lead most of the game but with the Night Hawks staying within striking range.

Heart River ended up with a 34-30 victory.

Ellie Kaitfors had eight points and Brianna Sanford six for the Night Hawks and Justice Anderson led in rebounds.

In the second quarter the turnovers were less for both teams but the Lady Cougars added one point to their lead and went into the locker room with an 18-7 advantage.

The Night Hawks came out in the second half with an up tempo surge, especially on the defensive end. They outscored Heart River 29 to 11 and forced the Lady Cougars

fourth quarter. Richardton-Taylor on the other hand had only seven players, so the fourth quarter went their way as they outscored the Night Hawks 22-5.

Ethan Dupper led in scoring with 16, which included four 3-pointers.

Carson Schalesky had 14 points and seven rebounds while Jacob Dix added 12 points.

team got off to a quick start by outscoring the Raiders 23-8 in the first quarter, and kept adding to the lead in the next three quarters. Final score had Hettinger/Scranton winning 73-33.

Tate Resner led the way in scoring for the Night Hawks with 18, Jarad Mattis added 16 and Jaxon Mellmer finished with 10.

The Night Hawk varsity finished the evening with 66-34 win. They got on top quickly and at half time had a 41-18 advantage.

come as they created 30 Raider turnovers, which led to many easy layups.

Tanner Sanford had a nice game in the steals department. I didn’t keep track but it seemed like he was always grabbing the ball from an opponent or stepping in front of an errant pass.

Brandon Pierce and Hayden Sadowsky provided almost two-thirds of Night Hawk scoring with 22 and 21 respectfully.

Isaiah Kludt added 10.

Denver Colgrove led Richardton-Taylor with 13.

Night Hawk boys basketball moves into 3rd place

Going into the game Heart River was in third place in Region 7, a half a game ahead of Hettinger-Scranton. When the game was over the two teams swapped positions in the standings. The Night Hawks pulled out a 54-44 win with a late fourth quarter surge. The Night Hawks improved their region standing to 5-2 and Heart River slipped to 5-3.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead but Hettinger/Scranton came back and took a five point lead after the first quarter and maintained a small lead until the third when the Cougars finished it with a 35-33 advan-

tage.

They traded leads in the pivotal fourth quarter until the clock was down to a little over two minutes; a series of actions pulled the Night Hawks ahead to stay.

Hayden Sadowsky nailed a 3-pointer, Sam Kludt stripped a Cougar ball handler just past the half court line and scored an easy layup at the other end, and Isaiah Kludt had two steals and went 4-4 at the free throw line.

I. Kludt led Hettinger/Scranton in scoring with 20, followed

by Sadowsky with 19. I had S. Kludt with six blocked shots.

The player that kept Heart River in the game all night long was Cole Olson who seemed to continually come up with a timely shot or a rebound. He finished

with 24 points including four 3-pointers and 11 rebounds.

The Night Hawk C team had an easier time as they downed the Cougars C team by a score of 55-41. Carson Schalesky and Jacob Dix did most of the damage for the Night Hawks.

Schalesky had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Dix had 17 points and 7 rebounds.

The Night Hawk junior varsity had a rougher time as they were outscored 18-10 in the final stanza and lost 48-45.

Turnovers and very few offensive rebounds hurt them in that final quarter.

Hettinger/Scranton was led

by Jaxon Mellmer who tallied 12 and Schalesky added 10 along with a six blocks.

They downed Bowman 81-37 and then lost a close one to Mott-Regent, 52-51, on a buzzer beating 3-pointer. They defeated New England for third place.

A key game in boys Region 7 play had Beulah defeating No. 7 rated Trinity, 67-60, at Beulah.

Both teams came into the game undefeated in Region 7. Beulah had a good night as they shot 52 percent from the field and only committed four turnovers.

This past Sunday, the NFL had its annual Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

Just like every year, the game features defenses that can’t blitz to match up against offenses that had barely any time to learn plays. All in all, this Pro Bowl was just like any other for me: I was really excited to watch the game, only to be severely disappointed by lackluster performances that turned the Pro Bowl into a game of two-hand touch being played by some of the best athletes in the world.

Luckily, there were five Vikings selected to the Pro Bowl, so there was plenty to watch. I know there will be some folks out there who denounce the all-star game and will point to the fact that 133 players (the most ever) were invited to the Pro Bowl because others dropped out or were going to the Super Bowl, but I’m here to tell you to not pay attention to those people. In 10 or 20 years, when people look back at the history of the game, there won’t be an asterisk next

to Teddy Bridgewater’s name or anyone else’s. Instead, it will simply read Teddy Bridgewater, 2016 Pro Bowler.

Bridgewater threw the least amount of passes of any quarterback in attendance, completing six of eight for 129 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. It was easy to tell Teddy’s rhythm was off with his wide receivers, but as the game progressed he settled down and was able to make some nifty throws.

Adrian Peterson had five rushes for four yards. Had anyone else been in Peterson’s shoes, they probably would have declined the Pro Bowl because of age and needing to recover. But Peterson, ever the competitor, still went to Hawaii and started at running back for Team Jerry Rice.

Everson Griffen only had one solo tackle and assisted on another, but defenses were not going after opposing quarterbacks, so his abilities were negated some. There was a stretch during the game that Griffen was able to apply consistent pressure, and even though it didn’t amount to a sack, it was still nice to hear his name mentioned throughout the game.

Anthony Barr got the start at linebacker and played quite a few snaps. Barr finished the game with two solo tackles and another assisted tackle. There

are always some players who seem to enjoy the Pro Bowl more than others, and Barr seemed like he was one of them. Anthony was in his element, and I expect him to see many more Pro Bowls throughout his career.

Harrison Smith was able to get some playing time, finishing the game with three solo tackles, one assisted tackle and an interception. There were a few plays where Smith seemed like he might have been lost in coverage which led to big gains by the opposing offense, but then again it’s hard to know if it was Smith’s fault or the corner’s. With so little time to practice together, there were bound to be some errors on both sides of the ball.

Looking ahead, this Sunday is the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos will take on Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. While my heart is saying it would be good for Manning to win one more ring before riding off into the sunset, my brain is telling me the Panthers have been the best team in football this year and they have the talent on both sides of the ball to pull out a win.

I think Carolina will win this game, but you can’t discount how valuable it is for the Broncos to have Manning and his calming influence. This game will be closer than it appears on paper.

WRESTLING

Night Hawk wrestlers finish 2nd at East-West

For the third straight year, Carrington captured the annual East-West Classic wrestling tournament in New Salem, Jan. 29-30. They easily outdistanced second place Hettinger-Scranton by 73.5 points.

This was the 40th East-West tournament that New Salem has hosted, and Carrington is the top winner with 12 championships followed by Napoleon with 11.

The Hettinger Black Devils have taken the championship three times, 1996, 1999 and 2001.

Out of the past 39 tournaments, the winner has gone on to win the state tourney 27 of those 39 years.

Kyle Burwick and Colbey Steeke were champions for the Night Hawks. Both recorded three falls to reach the finals.

Burwick decisioned Chauncey Dittus of New Salem 10-0 in the finals. Steeke decisioned Jake Belland of Watford City 7-0 in the finals. Mason DeFoe lost an overtime match to Riley Zachmeier from Rugby in the semi-finals at 106.

Zachmeier went on to win the championship. This was the third time they have faced each other with Zachmeier winning twice. Cale Schalesky injured his elbow in the semis at 132, which ended his tournament.

An interesting outcome was No. 2 rated Alex Barbion of Beulah-Hazen who pinned No. 1 rated Jordan Will of Minot Ryan in the finals. Barbion had earlier pinned the No. 3 rated Tyrell Larson of Carrington.
