Surgeon awaiting trial violated terms of release

A Hettinger surgeon currently waiting to stand trial in Oregon for multiple felony counts of sexual assault recently violated terms of his release after being cited for driving under intoxication, according to court records.

MANIACAL4: A force to be reckoned with

An internationally acclaimed group, THE MANIACAL4 (M4), will be featured at the third live concert of the Dakota Concert Association’s (DCA) 2015-2016 season. Scheduled for Saturday, March 5, at 7:30 pm at the Hettinger Lutheran Church in Hettinger, ND, this trombone quartet tells “one unified, inspiring musical story after another.”

M4 has performed on three continents, entertaining audiences with pieces from a wide range of styles and time periods such as classical, jazz, Latin, and light rock.

M4 performs everything from Bach, Beethoven and Mozart to Roy Orbison’s “Pretty Woman,” Fillmore’s “Lassus Trombone,” and Debussy’s “Girl With the Flaxen Hair.” Gliere’s “Russian Sailer’s Dance,” “Scarborough Fair” and John Williams’ “Raiders of the Lost Ark” are other highlights.

Trained at the University of North Texas in Denton, one of the premier jazz schools in the United States, these four outstanding musicians - Matt Jefferson, bass trombone; Nick Laufer, tenor trombone; Carl Lundgren, tenor trombone; and Alex Dubrov, tenor and electric trombone - are on track to become one of the world’s finest trombone quartets.

“Individually and collectively, MANIACAL4 is a force to be reckoned with,” says Michael Davis, New York recording artist and Rolling Stones trombonist. John Rojak from the American Brass Quintet says “This group makes me want to play with them.”

Medical exchange students felt very welcomed

by West River, Hettinger community

Fifth year medical students Børje Andre Cronbald Andersson and Krister Tyssen Johnson recently finished their sixweek medical exchange program with West River Health Services. The program is facilitated by the University of North Dakota and this was the second time West River has welcomed students to Hettinger.

In talking about their experience as a whole, Johnson said “it’s been great.”

He praised both the community and hospital staff for being so welcoming, and appreciated how genuinely interested people were in them and their Norwegian culture.

“The we we’ve been welcomed here it’s been great,” Johnson said.

“They’re (Hettinger community) very kind.”

Andersson said he knew there would be a strong Norwegian heritage in this part of the country, but he was surprised to find out how close people were to having relatives actually born in Norway.

The two couldn’t have been more impressed with the facility. The size and amenities that West River provides is something you wouldn’t see in Norway in a town the size of Hettinger.

“The facility here, West River Health Services, it really impressed us,” Johnson said. “It’s a great facility.”

“A small place like this in Norway, you just dream of an MRI,” Andersson said.

Johnson also cited the efficiency of the hospital and clinics as another thing that impressed him.

Andersson mirrored that sentiment and said something like a knee injury would take three months for an MRI in Norway for a diagnosis. In Hettinger it could take as little as a half an hour, Andersson said, of his experience.

One of Johnson’s favorite part of the six-week experience was meeting the people, reiterating how welcoming the community was.

“I didn’t expect that we would be that welcome here,” Johnson said. “It surprised me.”

Andersson said he wish they could have rented a car to explore the area, but due to the lack of services, they were only able to go out one weekend when someone lent them a vehicle.

One of the bigger surprises for Andersson was the gap between the two cultures (American and Norwegian). He thought he had a grasp on American ways from movies, television and other media outlets, but when he got

here he learned it wasn’t exactly the same.

Johnson hopes to bring back some of the physician’s bedside manner.

The fact that they take time and listen and explain things to their patient is something he hopes to practice in Norway.

“I want to be the kind of doctor that we’ve seen here,” Johnson.

The two medical students said they would recommend the experience to future Norwegian medical students. Especially if they want to learn more about America and the healthcare system here.

Both wanted to thank everyone in Hettinger for making it a good experience for them, they wanted to included all the community members, hospital staff, and the individual patients they saw and allowing them to help progress their medical education.

Their public reporting site (www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare) includes a set of quality star ratings for each nursing home that participates in Medicare or Medicaid. This Nursing Home Compare Five-Star Quality Rating System provides residents and their families with an easy to understand summary of three dimensions of nursing home quality: health inspection results, staffing

data, and quality measure data. Western Horizons Care Center, a sixty bed, skilled and basic care center in Hettinger, earned a five star rating.

The staff at Western Horizons Care Center includes a unique mix of young and more experienced personnel. LPN Barb Korang has been with the organization for almost 43 years! Over $42,000 has been raised so far, so contractors are being sought out to begin renovating eight rooms in the northeast wing immediately. We still have $103,500 to raise, but the Hettinger community and surrounding area have stepped up before (as is evidenced by their raising of over $675,000, when

It’s A Leap Year

FOR ONE MAN, THAT MEANS ANOTHER BIRTHDAY

For most of us it is a neat topic of conversation, something to talk about and remember why our calendar has a Feb. 29 every four years. And that’s all the farther it goes, forgetting about it until the next Leap Year.

But for some, they wait patiently for this date, and a chance to celebrate the special occassion.

How can that be?

Well, that’s because Vliem is a member of the Leap Year Baby club.

What is a Leap Year?

Technically it takes the Earth 365.25 days to make its way around the sun. So to make up for that extra fourth of a day, every four years we are gifted an extra day, Feb. 29.

Those lucky enough (or unlucky depending on if you’re a glass half empty kind of a person) to be born on Feb. 29 like Vliem, are known as a ‘leapling,’ ‘leaper,’ or ‘leap-year baby.’

Chances of being born on a Feb. 29 date are very rare, and according to an article by International

pole, said he doesn’t remember his family having to explain his birthday predicament, and said that “it’s just the way it was.”

He always referred to his birthday as being in February, so typically he and his family would celebrate it on Feb. 28, as oppose to celebrating it on March 1.

Those celebrations were also on Feb. 28 in school.

He never had any sad emotion about missing a Feb. 29 birthday, his parents made sure he still had a special day.

“The folks kind of made it so that it wasn’t a problem,” Vliem said. “I still had a birthday.”

Growing up, he said it was always a conversation piece. He only knows one other person, that he met later in life, that shares the unique birthdate with.

have alway been bigger and better every four years. His family made sure to celebrate extra extravagantly, because he only has an actual birthday every four years, so you should make it count.

“On my fourth year it’s always been a bigger, better party,” Vliem said.

He’s in an exclusive club, and he has a sense of humor about it.

“One thing about it, I can always act my age,” Vliem said. “I’ll be 16 this year.”

Vliem said his wife also appreciates his unique birthday and gets into the humor, saying that she “enjoys being married to a teenager.”

degree encouraging child sexual abuse related to the alleged 2-year sexual abuse of a girl in Clatsop County, Ore. The abuse was said to have begun in 2009 when she was “not yet 14 years old,” according to a court complaint.

Bail for Gustafson was set at $250,000. He was ordered to avoid contact with minors unless it was necessary to his occupation but was allowed to leave the state.

Hello, I’m sure you don’t want to hear about my health.

I know I’m sick of hearing about it. But I guess it comes with age. I’ll tell you one thing, after my last checkup Shirley got pretty excited and we had to go to a lawyer and rewrite our “will”.

Now a “will” is the last thing I’m concerned with.

I just kind of figure with my life style, there won’t be anything left for anyone to be concerned with.

And besides that, my Dad is over 90, still occasionally is horseback, drives all over the country, and has a memory much better than mine. I just king of figured I didn’t need to plan ahead for another thirty years or so.

My doctor said I am in

That’s Life good shape. Other than my eyes are kind of bad, my hearing aids need updated, my cholesterol is high, my blood pressure is high, and I have diabetes. But I’m in good shape for the shape I’m in!

So off to the lawyer we went. Right away a lovely young attorney began asking questions about our living will. Shirley knew right away what she wanted. No feeding tube. Water if she was thirsty. She didn’t want to be bedridden and a burden on the family. She is such a kind person.

The lawyer turned to me.

I said I wanted my feeding tube and Shirley’s too if that could be arranged. I said as far as liquids, just give me jack and water from about 3 until 7 p.m.

And make sure I have cable TV with HBO. My life would not be making a very dramatic change.

The young lady who was taking notes was writing furiously and Shirley quickly informed her “He is only joking!”

I said I would also like a Bloody Mary in the morning if they could get that through those tubes. But leave the pickle and the olives out. Skip the celery too. That would probably clog up the machine.

I advised the young lady that I would like to be an organ donor and she burst into laughter!

I don’t think law school prepared the young lady for such travails and she excused herself and went to get her superior.

As soon as she left, my first wife began chastising me for making light of a serious situation! I think she was just jealous of me.

I thought I had better research some wills so I’m just going to mention a couple that I read.

One gentleman wrote, “To my first wife Sue, who I always promised I would mention in my will, Hello Sue”.

Many have left millions of dollars to their pets and arranged for pet marriages, homes, and caretakers for their dogs or cats.

One of my favorites was the lady that left her million-dollar mansion to her cat! A mansion to a cat.

And the day of the funeral, the cat was sunning itself in the driveway and the hearse ran over it!

My dogs, Vern Baker and Tyke are going to have to figure out how to get by on much less.

I remember when a guy could keep up with the news. You could watch 30 minutes of Walter Cronkite and another half-hour local newscast, and you knew everything there was to know. If you wanted all the pesky details, you could read the newspaper or a magazine, but it was manageable.

Then came 24-hour news and sports channels, which forced people to make more news and sports. At first, conventional thinking suggested this information explosion would conclude once the 24 hours were filled.

Wrong. They simply created more 24-hour news and sports channels, which explains why Hutterite Women’s Hockey has been getting coverage. I wish I was kidding. I cant seem toi wrap my mind around the concept of a Hutterite hockey goon in a polka dot skirt and no front teeth.

So many weird things are happening, I feel like I’m in a Tim Burton movie. Last week, the leading Democratic presidential candidate was barking on the stump. Maybe she needs to go out.

And while we’re on the subject of gratuitous barking, why does every other television commercial has a doorbell sound effect?

Gus the Wonder Pug totally freaks out every time, running and barking a warning that we’re all going to die. The end may be near.

Or at least Hell might be icing up. Last week, Donald Trump argued with the Pope about the definition of Christian

behavior. Curiously, the Republican front runner got support from ministers Franklin Graham and Jerry Falwell Jr., who said the Pope ought to butt out of politics. Alrighty, then.

I’m still trying to get a handle on evangelical politics. I’m not sure if they are basing their ethics on The Bible or “Atlas Shrugged”. Last year, many of them were angry when the Pope said it was our duty to feed, shelter and heal the poor, because you know, socialism. Now, they’re backing a candidate who wants to build a wall to keep out poor people, which I guess does sort of solve the problem.

Like it says in 2 Corinthians, “Out of sight, out of mind.”

Far be it from me to suggest that Donald Trump is not the equal of the Pope when it comes to theology, but as I recall, biblical heroes were more inclined to tear down walls. Gabriel brought down the walls of Jericho with a trumpet.

Like it says in 3 Corinthians, “He huffed and he puffed and he blew that wall down.”

In weirdness closer to home, the South Dakota legislature was busy last week creating solutions to curb an onslaught of rogue bathroom behaviour. If the governor signs this bill into law, it will require transgender students to use bathrooms that correspond to their gender at birth. You know, separate but equal facilities, because that’s always served us so well.

I don’t want to say South Dakota lawmakers are slow on the uptake, but “Rocky Horror Picture Show” came out in 1975, and they’re just now getting around to overreacting to it. Last session, they banned Hootanannys.

The impetus for this new law is the fear that

the federal government (the Department of Bathrooms?) is going to shove a bunch of equality and fairness nonsense down the throats of the good people of South Dakota, who know nonsense when they elect it.

Next up is a law designating whether the toilet paper should roll off from the top or the bottom and whether one ply is enough in state buildings.

Meanwhile in North Dakota, Republicans, who threw around money like the Wolf of Wall Street, are trying to figure out a way to pin a billion dollar budget shortfall on Democrats. Finding Democrats to blame is getting exceedingly difficult in North Dakota as most seem to be either in the witness protection program or were the first ones taken in the Rapture. So it falls to the current budget masterminds to polish the cow pie.

Already, GOP apologists are telling us how good we’ve got it. The economy isn’t growing, but their noses sure are. After successfully steering into the iceberg, Captain Jack Dalrymple is abandoning ship, heading back to Casselton where all there is to worry about is exploding oil trains.

Fear not, said navigator Al Carlsen, the problem could be solved by finding “efficiencies” in state government. That might suggest to the politically astute, a species more endangered than North Dakota Democrats, that the Good Ole Boy Gummit has not been running all that efficiently as of late. If that is the case, I suggest bathroom legislation to distract the masses.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Patricia Child and is survived by his daughter and son -in-law Belinda and Rick Maurer of Woodstock, Ga.; his sisters Ellen Plews of Coos Bay, Ore. and Merline Wright of Fort Pierce, Floa. Mr. Child graduated from North Dakota State University with an Undergraduate Degree in Civil Engineering and Master’s Degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and in the late 1950’s he was part of the team responsible for the design of the Phantom jet. He retired after a 38 year career with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and K-25. Mr. Child enjoyed a great steak cooked by his son-in-law, home improvements and building projects, the Oak Ridge

Betty L. Peterman, 89 longtime Raton resident, died Dec. 3, 2015 in Scottsdale Ariz. at Sunrise Senior Assisted Living. Betty and her husband Robert Peterman moved to Raton in 1961. She relocated to Scottsdale in 2003.

Betty was born in Aberdeen, S.D. May 15, 1926 to Wayne and Josephine Spatz. She grew up on the family homestead in Perkins County South Dakota.

She graduated from Hettinger High School in 1943 and attended Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, S.D. She taught in a one room school house in Perkins County before moving to Seattle, Wash. where she worked for Boeing after WWII. She then moved to Ontario, Ore. where she met her husband Robert Peterman and they were married on August 11, 1951. After living in Oregon and Idaho for several years they moved to New Mexico in 1957.

The Night Hawk wrestlers did well in the 2016 State Tournament at Fargo by placing third in both the Individual and Dual portions of the tournament.

Winner Carrington graduates six seniors and all six made the state tourney. Pembina County North has seven seniors on their team. The Night Hawks return all their team with the exception of standout Colbey Steeke. They could very well be in the running

for the state title next year.

Speaking of Carrington, I noted in the Fargo Forum how tough a schedule they had this year leading up to the state tourney. They finished fifth in the Bismarck Rotary, split with Class A Minot, defeated Class A West Fargo and lost to Class A champs Bismarck. They went 3-3 in “The Clash” at Rochester which included a 71-0 loss to a team from California that was ranked No. 3 in the nation.

I really felt bad for senior Colbey Steeke who worked so hard to get to the championship match and then lose a tough one.

He will be missed not only for his ability but his mentorship to the younger wrestlers and being a team leader. He also lost out

on the school wrestling record of 193 wins. He is now tied with Kayle Dangerud, although it looks like Kyle Burwick will have the record sometime in his junior year at the rate he is going.

According to the ND State Wrestling Tournament Guide both the Night Hawks and Bowman County had four wrestlers who made the Academic All-State Ballot. For the Night Hawks it was Alec Andress, Kyle Burwick, Mason DeFoe and Logan Lachowitzer. The Bulldogs had Mathew Carlson, Beau Jeffers, Lane Jeffers and Cole Schmaltz.

Mott-Regent had their number on Hettinger-Scranton in basketball last week as they defeated the Night Hawk girls 59-35 in

the region play-in game. Their boys team downed the Night Hawks 65-54 on Feb. 18 in a regular season game. According to head coach Jeremy Dietchman; “Brandon Pierce was out sick and Mott shot 49 percent and made 7-11 three-pointers. We shot 29 percent and missed some free throws. Mott played really well, have to give them credit.”

Head coach Kelly Peirce comments on the girls game; “Everyone played, but Molly Holt and Abbie Kludt were sick that entire week. Neither practiced all week.

They gave it all they had that night, but both were still pretty weak and sick. No excuses, they all played, just didn’t get it done.

Wallace and Johnson might have been dissapointments this season, but the biggest disappointment by far was Cordarrelle Patterson. After making the Pro Bowl his rookie year, Patterson has fallen out of favor with the coaching staff. CP84 might be one of the best return men in the game, but poor route running and lackluster effort have ensured Patterson will never be more than a gadget player in the NFL. After only catching 2(!) passes for 15 yards, Patterson has a PFF score of only 61.5 which would have ranked him number 82 in the league had he qualified. Patterson is in the final year of his rookie deal and has a cap hit of nearly $2.3 million which is a high price to pay for a kickoff return specialist.

If the Hettinger-Scranton boys defeat Beach on Feb. 26, they will not have to participate in the region play-in game on March 1, since they will finish in third place. Rudolph caught 49 passes for 495 yards and 5 touchdowns while earning a PFF grade of 71.9, good for 23rd in the NFL. Kyle has four years left on his recent contract extension and has a cap hit of $7.3 million this year.

Rhett Ellison comes in at number 40 of PFF’s tight end rankings with a grade of 66.7. Ellison only caught 11 for 124 yards, but it was his work at a blocker where he really showed his value. Ellison is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Vikings brought him back.

MyCole Pruitt was given a grade of 67.2 by PFF, and although he didn’t play enough to qualify, his grade would have brought him in at number 39.

Pruitt caught 10 passes for 89 yards in his rookie season. He also has three years left on his rookie contract.

Cramer Accepting Student Entries in 2016 Congressional Art Competition Congressman Kevin Cramer announced today his office is accepting student entries for the 2016 Congressional Art Competition. Each spring, this nationwide high school art competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The winning entry from North Dakota will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

“This is a great opportunity to showcase a North Dakota student’s artistic talent on a national level, said Cramer. “Their piece will hang in the United States Capitol for the next

year where thousands of visitors and tourists from around the world will see it on display.”

The competition is open to public, private, and home-schooled students in grades 9 to 12.

Exceptions may be made for students in the seventh and eighth grades on the same campus as a high school. To enter the competition, students are asked to submit their entries to the North Dakota Juried Student Art Show at the Taube Museum of Art in Minot no later than Tuesday, March 29 at 5:30 p.m.

Their work will be on display at the Taube Museum from April 5 to 29. At this time, professional artists chosen by the Taube Museum of Art will chose one winning entry to represent the state of North Dakota on display in the U.S. Capitol. The winner will also be invited to a reception in Washington, D.C., at the Capitol Visitors Center.

During 2016, CHS Southwest Grain will allocate a total of $13 million in patronage returns to its eligible customers based on business done between Sept. 1, 2014 – Aug. 31, 2015, of which $5.7 million is being paid out in cash.

Overall, CHS expects to return an estimated $519 million during fiscal 2016, extending the strongest period of cash returns to owners in company history. Distributions will include cash patronage, equity redemptions, preferred stock and dividends paid on preferred stock to about 1,100 eligible member cooperatives and approximately 50,000 individual members in 49 states, along with preferred stockholders. CHS net income for its fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 2015, was $781 million. Over the past five fiscal years, CHS has returned $2.7 billion in cash to its owners.

CHS makes equity redemptions to eligible individual direct members throughout the year, based on attaining age 70 or estate retirements, but potentially eligible individuals must make contact.
