his is the final issue of the Adams County Record. Our weekly newspaper here, which has been published by Country Media, Inc. for almost 19 years, will cease publication per-

manently with the issue of Nov. 29, 2019. For several years, said company president Steve Hungerford, the Adams County Record’s available pool of advertisers, subscribers and employees had been slowly eroding, to the point where the newspaper

had been only marginally profitable for some time. “We kept plugging away,” said Hungerford, “but newspapers today – both big and small – are in sharp decline because of competition from social and online media, as well as the economics of local market

conditions. “This is especially the case for small-town papers that are owned by companies based out of town or out of state.” Country Media is headquartered in Salem, Oregon. “For months now, we’ve been looking for local

residents who might have an interest in buying the Adams County Record,” said Hungerford, “but we’ve not had any success. “Our hope is that Country Media will be followed by one or more local residents who’ll start a newspaper and thrive with the com-

munity’s backing.” Meantime, the company will begin refunding Adams County Record prepaid subscriptions during the month of December. “We're sorry it has come to this,” said Hungerford. “It’s a sad day for all of us.”

n Nov. 16, 4-H, an organization that promotes hands-on learning for kids, hosted an awards banquet. There, both student and volunteer leaders were honored for their involvement in the organization. Specifically, club leaders were recognized for their involvement in facilitating meetings and 4-H projects. Adams County Extension Agent Hannah Nordby said the goal of the banquet was to acknowledge the students and volunteers who have stayed with 4-H through the years. “When a student or volunteer sticks with the organization for a long time, it’s really a testament to how much Local 4-H Cloverbuds are awarded pins and certificates for their involvement in 4-H. West River Foundation presents check to local Food Pantry T

he West River Health Services Foundation donated $750 of the proceeds from the Turkey Luncheon to the local Adams County Food Pantry this week. The proceeds allowed the local food pantry to gift 25 turkeys for those in need during the Thanksgiving

It’s been a nice, warm week with a high of 57 degrees on Sunday. Looks like more cold winter weather is headed this way, so we better enjoy the balmy days. There were more replacement surgeries this week. RonE Jenson and Kelly Britton got new hips on Monday and Ron Floyd got a new knee. Thankfully, it sounds like everything went well for all of them. Taz went up to help Sage repair a deck for someone north of Sage’s new house that day. Jace Jenson and Taz hauled our cull cows to the sale barn in Faith on Tuesday. Amanda took little River Lu to Spearfish for her doctor appointment and Copper went along to help with her little sister. Knox stayed home to play with Grandma Missy. Reub moved hay all day and I took him lunch over at the east place. After lunch, I went up to visit Kaye and Conrad Smith to get a couple treatments from Kaye’s machine for my shingles. The hay grinder came that afternoon, so Casey was busy helping with that. The hay grinder went up to Alan Kaitfors after he left here. Wednesday was a good day here. I took lunch over to Reub again at noon and these guys hauled hay all day, getting the last of it hauled into the hay corrals. We lost another old friend. Eugene Lenerville, age 91 of Lodgepole, passed away at his home on Thursday. We’re running out of Lenervilles around here and that is not a good thing. Our sympathy goes out to Gene’s family. He will be missed. Taz helped Jace Jenson haul Jenson’s cows over to their rented pasture on Thursday. Those young men do a lot of hauling together and they’re getting very good at it. Casey took the junior high wrestlers to a tournament in Baker on Friday. I had physical therapy in Hettinger that afternoon and Reub had his appointment with Mary Eggebo at the same time. It was after dark when we left Hettinger and drove to Lane Giannonatti’s ranch. Lane gave us twelve year-old hens and one rooster, so I’m back in the chicken business again. Lane is getting a bunch of pullets to replace these chickens and I’m going to try to get a few pullets from Trent Turbiville to join the older hens in the coop. It’s great to be getting some eggs again and it gives me some chores to do to keep my mind off the shingles and my bad knee. Wade Engle and a friend of his came up from the Hills on Saturday to go pheasant hunting and Taz went with them over to Kevin VanSlooten’s place. It’s also deer season and there are lots of hunters all over the

neighborhood. We sure hope they’re getting rid of lots of deer before they wind up in our haystacks this winter. Casey and Missy went to Sturgis that day for another junior high wrestling tournament and they visited with Rick and Cindy Engle while they were down there. The change oil light came on in the pickup so I took it up to Hettinger Saturday morning to get the oil changed at RZ Motors and had a nice visit with Mike Johnson about all the injuries we’ve had down through the years! Several of us went in to Buffalo for the community Thanksgiving Service at the Congregational Church Sunday evening. Pastor Jerry Densmore, Pastor Conner Armstrong, Pastor George McGuire, Father Ed Vanorny, and Pastor Henry Mohagen led the service and the community choir blessed us with some great music before we all went downstairs for a delicious lunch and fellowship after the service. Have you been watching the impeachment inquiry hearings on television? All Congress is focused on is getting rid of our duly elected president, never mind that they can’t find anything to impeach him for. They are getting absolutely NOTHING done for the American people, who elected them to tend to our business. From the news reports I’ve been hearing, evidently I’m not the only one who is disgusted with politicians from both parties. Sen. Ted Cruz is bringing a bill to create term limits for Washington politicians. It probably has the chance of a snowball in Hell, but wouldn’t it be great if it actually passed? Vic Weyrich just sent me this good joke I’ve just got to share with you: How much are you donating? It had been a long, long day, and John the truck driver really wanted to just get home. Living in Washington D.C. he knew traffic would be bad this time of evening, but to his horror, a traffic jam reared ahead of him larger than anything he had ever seen before. Bewildered, since he hadn’t heard anything yet on the news, he stuck his head out and just kept seeing cars slowing down, stopping for a few moments, and then driving off. Suddenly, a man knocks on his window. John rolls down the window and asks, “What’s going on?” The man says, “Terrorists have kidnapped the entire US Congress!” “Oh my gosh!” exclaimed John. “And they’re asking for a $100 million ransom.” “Jeez Louise!” moaned John. “Otherwise, they are going to douse them all in gasoline and set them on fire!” “Lord have mercy!” cried John. “We are going from car to car, collecting donations.” “How much is everyone giving, on average?” asked John. “About a gallon, maybe two. Depending on what you can afford.”

Overall Nordby said that the awards banquet was a successful event with a “nice turnout”. “There was a great show of support from the community for these kids,” she said. “It’s amazing to see because 4-H touches on so many aspects of development and leadership growth.” For Nordby, the awards banquet was not just a way to celebrate the 4-H students and volunteers, but also a way to celebrate beginning her second year as the Adams County Extension Agent. “On my end the event was fun because it marked my one year anniversary,” she said. “It’s been great to get to know all the kids involved in 4-H.”

Head Coach Randy Burwick has 19 on his roster with only two seniors, Ty Warbis and Ezra Wiechmann. Their strength will be in the sophomore class with eight wrestlers. As a result of a 12-0 regular season NDSU will receive a first-round bye in the FCS NCAA Division I playoffs. Also, I can’t believe the winning coach could not have eased off on the scoring. Their roster reveals there were over 50 players on the team. A third of fourth string team could have been inserted. SD has four levels of 11man football teams and three levels of 9-man.

Nighthawk basketball teams both down Harding County

By SHELDON CHRISTENSON For the Pioneer Harding County came to Scranton on Dec. 18 and 19 to take on the Nighthawk boys and girls’ basketball teams, and left going 0-2 for their efforts. Hettinger-Scranton’s boy’s basketball team faced the Ranchers first and pulled out a 64-62 win. The Nighthawk’s full court pressure initially gave the Ranchers trouble as they quickly fell behind 12-0. On top

of that, their 6’4” center Mason Teigen left the game late in the first quarter with three fouls and would not return until the 2nd half. The Nighthawks built a 13-point lead at the end of the first half which was highlighted by a buzzer-beating long range 3-point shot by Haden Sadowsky, which made the score 38-25. With the return of Teigen in the second half, better shooting and rebounding, they outscored Hettinger/Scranton 37-

26 but the Ranchers fell just short by two points. They had a chance to tie the game with less than a minute to go but, Sam Kludt blocked a close in shot by Teigen which more than likely saved the game from being tied. The Ranchers got the ball back with 10 seconds left but could not get off a good shot. Kludt was having a problem finding his shooting touch but his blocked shot was definitely one of the key moments for the

Nighthawks. Sadowsky scored 34 for HS which included five 3-pointers and Brandon Pierce added 21. I had Clayton Koch leading Harding Co. with 23 points. The Nighthawk JV team also remains undefeated as they downing Harding Co. 63-53. Harding Co. came into the game with a 2-0 record and receiving votes in the top five in South Dakota Class B ranks. The following night the Nighthawk girls downed the

Harding County girls who came in with a 1-3 record. The Hettinger/Scranton girls also jumped out to an early lead as they were head 16-1 after the first stop, and 25-15 at half. They held on in the second half although being outscored 2421 to pull off their second win of the season to go along with five losses. Casey Joppa tallied 19 and Kinsey Jahner added 11 for the Nighthawks. Both had two 3-pointers.

he West River Health Services Foundation is looking for volunteers for our 2020 Giving Hearts Day (GHD) effort. As most of you know, the WRHS Foundation joined the Impact Foundation last year and participated with their statewide (mainly online) fundraiser leading up to Giving Hearts Day. The community engagement a year ago was amazing, with “Giving Hearts Nights

After receiving $11,125 in award prizes for their awesome efforts, the Grand Total raised was $158,565! This was an amazing freshman year (well beyond expectations!) with Giving Hearts Day. Of course, we certainly don’t want to

be known as a one-hit wonder. Plus, our ultimate $400,000 goal for our new Physician Recruitment Endowment, still is nearly $250,000 away! The good news is, we had originally intended to reach our goal in eight years. Now, we are thinking three years! If we could reach $400K, we’d have $20,000 each and every year thereafter for physician signing bonuses, forgiveness of physician student loans or for use with our Ambassador Program to send experienced and retired

Despite the challenges I hope you all had the opportunity to gather around the table this Thanksgiving and count your blessings. One I am forever thankful for is the hard working individuals within the agricultural community, young and old, that wake up each morning, put their best foot forward and go out to do what needs to get done rain, snow, wind

Although you can get started now Andrew Swenson, NDSU Extension farm management specialist, advises producers to wait. "Producers have the opportunity to get more clarity on prices and yields by waiting," Swenson says. Producers have the option of selecting either PLC or ARCCounty on a crop-bycrop basis within each

Farm Service Agency (FSA) farm unit, whereas the ARC-Individual program option includes total crop base acres of the enrolled farms. The program election decision is for both the 2019 and 2020 crop years. To determine payments for the 2019 crop year, both safety net options use 2019 national marketing year average prices (MYA), but the ARC-County program also uses 2019 county average yields. The 2019 marketing year period varies by crop. The period for wheat, barley and oats is June 1, 2019, through May 31, 2020. For canola, flax, field peas and lentils the period is July 1, 2019, through June 30, 2020. For soybeans, corn and

sunflowers the period is Sept. 1, 2019, through Aug. 31, 2020. The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides an update on the projected MYA prices each month based on sales up to that point. With each month the price projection becomes more accurate. "Yields are more difficult to project," Swenson says. "The primary source of ARCCounty yields, starting in 2019, will be from the Risk Management Agency(RMA) instead of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS)."
