f people driving through town saw an unusual amount of old furniture, broken chairs, and rusted appliances on the side of the road last week, there was a reasonable explanation.

The City of Hettinger organized their first citywide cleanup day last week, giving Hettinger residents a chance to get rid of their unwanted junk at no cost to the resident. While the City has hosted similar cleanup events in the past, this was the first time county employees traveled around town to pick up unwanted garbage left on the side of the street.

According to City Council Member James Lindquist, the City organized the cleanup day to benefit Hettinger residents and especially the elderly. Linquist said that the original idea for a citywide clean up originated from local resident Allen Mcintyre. For the last few years, Mcintyre has regularly approached the City and asked the local council to support people who either don’t have the physical or financial means to get rid of their heavier trash.

“A lot of other towns slightly bigger than Hettinger do these types of cleanup initiatives,” said Lindquist.

ongratulations to the elementary football team on winning the 2019 championship at Bowman on September 28. They finished the regular season with a 4-1 record

with wins over Killdeer, Heart River, New England and Baker.

Their lone loss was to Bowman, 34-24. But they rebounded in the championship playoff game to avenge that loss with a 14-6 victory over Bowman.

Comments from coach Kortney Kindsfater;

“Our Young Night Hawks played their absolute hearts out.

Temperature was in the low 40s, it rained with 20-30mph winds during the whole game mixing with sleet at times, and this young team NEVER gave up one ounce.

Needless to say, the conditions were completely

miserable and our boys took home the Championship not only because they out-played Bowman, but also greatly in part because they out toughened them. Right down to the last defensive down, they fought with everything they had to hold Bowman and take this Cham-

he old Movies N’ More building near Main Street has been a recent point of interest for the Hettinger Chamber of Commerce. For the last few years, the old dilapidated building has sat empty, waiting to be transformed into a much more useful place. Recently, the Hettinger Chamber was awarded $114,000 USDA grant to renovate and equip the old Movies N’ More building with new technology for the community’s benefit.

“We hope the building will be a ‘jack of all trades’ building, available for small businesses that perhaps can’t afford to have their own space in the beginnings of their business,” said Fosheim.

When finished, Fosheim said that the center would provide community members and small, home-based businesses access to high quality business equipment, including copying, printing, and video/audio conferencing.

The Chamber also wants to use the building for their own professional development programs, such as Lunch & Learns. Assuming all goes according to plan, the Chamber hopes to have the future center available to the community by the end of 2020.

“The Chamber is thrilled to have the funding, research, and community support to pursue an opportunity that will be a major asset to business owners, community organizations, and leaders in the community,” concluded Fosheim.

“[The study] explored different resources for the community including the offering of personal and professional development courses and training, and we found that is a major need and desire of local business members,” she said.

According to Fosheim, the Chamber has the long-term goal to transform the old Movies N’ More building into a Collaborative Workforce Center.

The center would provide business resources for local businesses, both new and existing, to achieve their goals.

Already the Chamber has received other grants to establish a buffalo mural and to purchase audio and video conferencing equipment, a printer, and a smart board for the building.

Specifically the USDA grant will give the Chamber the opportunity to “gut” the building and create a comfortable and functional space for community meetings, business trainings, and personal and professional

Nighthawk basketball teams both down Harding County

Harding County came to Scranton on Dec. 18 and 19 to take on the Nighthawk boys and girls’ basketball teams, and left going 0-2 for their efforts.

Hettinger-Scranton’s boy’s basketball team faced the Ranchers first and pulled out a 64-62 win. The Nighthawk’s full court pressure initially gave the Ranchers trouble as they quickly fell behind 12-0. On top

26 but the Ranchers fell just short by two points.

They had a chance to tie the game with less than a minute to go but, Sam Kludt blocked a close in shot by Teigen which more than likely saved the game from being tied.

The Ranchers got the ball back with 10 seconds left but could not get off a good shot.

Kludt was having a problem finding his shooting touch but his blocked shot was definitely one of the key moments for the

Nighthawks.

Sadowsky scored 34 for HS which included five 3-pointers and Brandon Pierce added 21. I had Clayton Koch leading Harding Co. with 23 points.

The Nighthawk JV team also remains undefeated as they downing Harding Co. 63-53.

Harding Co. came into the game with a 2-0 record and receiving votes in the top five in South Dakota Class B ranks.

The following night the Nighthawk girls downed the

Harding County girls who came in with a 1-3 record. The Hettinger/Scranton girls also jumped out to an early lead as they were head 16-1 after the first stop, and 25-15 at half.

They held on in the second half although being outscored 2421 to pull off their second win of the season to go along with five losses.

Casey Joppa tallied 19 and Kinsey Jahner added 11 for the Nighthawks. Both had two 3-pointers.

CLEAN UP » FROM PAGE 1

City organized the citywide cleanup, it was a group of four county employees who physically hauled the garbage. In total, 54 people signed up for the cleanup services. The cleanup effort, which was only supposed take one day, lasted over a day and a half due to the large volume of garbage.

“They picked up various items like trees, old furniture, and even a drier and washer set,” said Lindquist.

“They had some pretty heavy lifting out there, but there were people thanking the county employees while they were picking up the items.”

The total cost of the cleanup initiative is still being totaled, however Lindquist said that the rough estimate totaled roughly $1,500 before labor costs were totaled.

Despite the cost, Lindquist said that the cleanup service ultimately benefitted a large portion of the Hettinger population and the city as a whole. He said it’s very possible the city will sponsor a similar event next year based on the decision the local city council makes next year.

“We will still have to see the full results on how much the day cost,” he said. “But we had such a positive experience with the citywide clean up day – I wouldn’t see why we wouldn’t continue this initiative.”

Lindquist continued, “For the Beauty of Hettinger, the organization that Al is apart of, is dedicated to making the town look better, and it’s similar to what the Hettinger Chamber and Helping Hettinger Day are working towards, so why wouldn’t the City take part in that effort?”

These kids were not complaining, they were not whining, they had one goal in mind and were prepared to dig deep enough to come up with whatever amount of grit they needed to in order to take home the victory.”

ettinger-Scranton’s volleyball team downed Bison in three sets, 25-11, 25-12 and 25-8, on September 24. Leading the Night Hawks in kills were Alyssa Andress with 10 and Sam Oase had 8. Talia Carter added 23 assist.

They then went on to finish third in the Silver division at the Dickinson Tournament, Sept. 27-28. They have an important region game with New England on October 3.

Congratulations to the 7th grade girls volleyball team as they took first place in the 7th grade tourney at Bowman on September 28.

The Night Hawk football team lost to South Border, 30-14, on September 27.

The Night Hawks held a 14-6 lead after the first quarter on a 51 yard touchdown run by Jeran Anderson and a 10 yard TD run

Nighthawk basketball teams both down Harding County

Harding County came to Scranton on Dec. 18 and 19 to take on the Nighthawk boys and girls’ basketball teams, and left going 0-2 for their efforts.

Hettinger-Scranton’s boy’s basketball team faced the Ranchers first and pulled out a 64-62 win. The Nighthawk’s full court pressure initially gave the Ranchers trouble as they quickly fell behind 12-0. On top

of that, their 6’4” center Mason Teigen left the game late in the first quarter with three fouls and would not return until the 2nd half. The Nighthawks built a 13-point lead at the end of the first half which was highlighted by a buzzer-beating long range 3-point shot by Haden Sadowsky, which made the score 38-25.

With the return of Teigen in the second half, better shooting and rebounding, they outscored Hettinger/Scranton 37-

26 but the Ranchers fell just short by two points.

They had a chance to tie the game with less than a minute to go but, Sam Kludt blocked a close in shot by Teigen which more than likely saved the game from being tied.

The Ranchers got the ball back with 10 seconds left but could not get off a good shot.

Kludt was having a problem finding his shooting touch but his blocked shot was definitely one of the key moments for the

Nighthawks.

Sadowsky scored 34 for HS which included five 3-pointers and Brandon Pierce added 21. I had Clayton Koch leading Harding Co. with 23 points.

The Nighthawk JV team also remains undefeated as they downing Harding Co. 63-53.

Harding Co. came into the game with a 2-0 record and receiving votes in the top five in South Dakota Class B ranks.

The following night the Nighthawk girls downed the

Harding County girls who came in with a 1-3 record. The Hettinger/Scranton girls also jumped out to an early lead as they were head 16-1 after the first stop, and 25-15 at half.

They held on in the second half although being outscored 2421 to pull off their second win of the season to go along with five losses.

Casey Joppa tallied 19 and Kinsey Jahner added 11 for the Nighthawks. Both had two 3-pointers.

But that reminds me of another

story from a few years back. It was when we were hotshotting up and down the road. North of Belfield several miles, on the east side of highway 22 you can see a large hill that is evidently man made.

Well, in my imagination, I envisioned ancient Indians building this hill as a place of worship or something. Or maybe visitors from another planet that had built this mound for a landing site for their spaceships. Or maybe, if you dug into that hill, you would find

a race of people that lived beneath the surface of the earth. I’m not completely sane you know.

Anyway, one day at happy hour, I asked a friend who lived near there if he had any idea what they were.

He said, “That was where they used to mine Ukrainians!”

I guess he meant uranium. Maybe happy hour lasted too long.

The temperature at our house Saturday morning was 31 degrees so I picked all the cucumbers, green peppers and most of the tomatoes from the three raised bed gardens.

It was 37 degrees here on Monday morning when Casey and Taz went to our Horse Creek pasture to star t trailing the cows home.

RonE and Jace Jenson and Bill Holt helped them gather the cows out of the deep draws and head them south.

Jace said he had ice on his windshield when he left Ralph and when Clint Doll helped Taz and Casey trail the cows

through the Hackamore pastures, Clint said it was 32 degrees at his house that morning.

By that afternoon the temperature rose to 78 degrees so my laundr y got dr y on the clothesline and Reub was able to cut some third cutting alfalfa that afternoon.

Taz helped Reub get the square baler home from Glendo Tuesday morning and then he took our air conditioner out for me before he left for rodeos in Kansas City and Omaha that afternoon. The furnace kicked in Saturday morning and we sure don’t need air conditioning now.

The next national census will star t soon.

A guy from the census bureau stopped here on Wednesday to verify that there were still people living in the same place as the last census. He had our house and Casey and Missy’s house listed, but didn’t have Taz and Amanda’s house on the list yet. When he saw me limping, he gave me some advice about supplements that he takes that fixed his pain so I thanked him for

This illustrates what they deal with: A fire star ted on some grassland near a farm in Indiana. The fire depar tment from the nearby town was called to put the fire out. The fire proved to be more than the small town fire depar tment could handle, so someone suggested that a r ural volunteer fire depar tment be called. Though there was doubt that they would be of any assistance, the call was made.

The volunteer fire depar tment arrived in a dilapidated old fire tr uck. They drove straight towards the fire and stopped in the middle of the flames. The volunteer firemen jumped off the tr uck and frantically star ted spraying water in all directions. Soon they had snuffed out the center of the fire, breaking the blaze into two easily controllable par ts. The farmer was so impressed with the volunteer fire depar tment’s work and so grateful that his farm had been spared, that he presented the volunteer fire depar tment with a check for $1000. A local ne ws repor ter asked the volunteer fire captain what the depar tment planned to do with the funds. “ That should be obvious,” the chief responded, “the first thing we’re gonna do is get the brakes fixed on that danged old fire tr uck.”

There were a lot of things happening on Saturday. It was Men’s Day at the Rainbow Bible Ranch south of Union Center and Lester Longwood took Duane Harris and Reub with him down there. RonE and Starla Jenson and Casey and Missy went to Spear fish for the football game to watch BHSU beat a team from Colorado. After the game they all came back to Buffalo for the wedding of Kirbi Braaten and Taten Brengle later that afternoon. Taz got home from the rodeos Friday night and he and Amanda also went in to the Brengle wedding. The Reva/Sor um fire depar tment had their pancake and sausage supper that evening in Reva and I joined a lot of neighbors for that. The Camp Crook fire depar tment also had their BBQ supper at the Camp Crook Community Center Saturday evening. These local fire depar tments are all staffed by vo-

It was 33 degrees here Thursday morning when Casey went up to Ralph to help Jenson’s preg test their cows.

Reub spent the morning bunching bales at Coyote’ and he was able to get the third cutting alfalfa square baled that afternoon when it warmed up. The laundr y got dr y on the clothesline again and I baked a big batch of buns that afternoon to help Reub keep himself nourished while I’m laid up.

There was a celebration of life for Violet Krambeer, 98, at the Reva Hall Friday afternoon and a lot of friends and family showed up to bid goodbye to her. There was a private family burial ser vice before the ser vice. Ken Amor also brought my sister Judy’s tombstone to set in the Glendo cemeter y where we buried her in June. Aunt Violet was a Wilkinson and my late mother Lila White’s sister. It’s really hard to say goodbye to family members.

isitors in Hettinger looking for a central place to stay close to downtown will find a welcoming bed at the Tip Top Motel. The motel has been a staple in Hettinger for over fifty years, giving Adams County visitors a safe and comfor table place to stay during different events like weddings, rodeos, and reunions. According to Tip Top Co-manager Kayla Hillegas, it’s not uncommon for most of the rooms to fill up, especially during large events like opening pheasant week.

“Hunting season is our biggest time of year,” said Hillegas. “ We fill up completely ever y year.”

Locally, The Tip Top Motel is

known for its amenities.

Each room has a flat screen TV and free Wi-Fi. The motel also suppor ts a complimentar y continental breakfast for patrons ever y morning.

Just recently, the motel expanded into a second building. The expansion provided the motel more rooms for longer-term residents. In total, the motel has 24 rooms for shor t term stays and five new rooms for more permanent individuals

looking to stay for weeks or even months.

Hillegas explained that the motel’s owner bought and renovated Hettinger’s old insurance and tax agency building to make more extended stay rooms specifically catered to people working temporar y jobs in

the area.

“ The new apar tment style rooms are for temporar y workers, like the windmill workers and bee farmers who stay in Hettinger for three to six months at a time,” she said. “ The rooms are made to be like a home away from home.”

In addition to adding a whole new building, the Tip Top Motel also

under went a major remodeling to most of its rooms.

The managers installed new floors, revamped the light fixtures, and modernized the rooms. “ The rooms really improved,” said the other co-manager, Core Frechette. “ They look fantastic compared to what they were. The difference was night and day.”

Hillegas said that she was par ticularly excited about improving the rooms with new kitchenettes featuring a range and full sized fridges.

Since the renovations, the motel has received higher online reviews.

“ We surprise a lot of guests,” said Frechette. “ There are people who haven’t visited the Tip Top in years who are

shocked to see the improvements.”

Even though the Tip Top has gone through recent renovations, Hillegas said that they are working towards adding even more to the extended stay rooms.

“ We are working towards making the extended stay rooms more comfor table for the people living here,” she said. “If all goes according to plan, we hope to add a pet park, a lounge, and coin operated laundr y systems.”

Through the years, Hillegas said the Tip Top Motel has continually improved, making it a hidden gem off the beaten path of Highway 12.

“ We look old on the outside,” said Hillegas, “but you would be pleasantly surprised about the inside.”

I

n the face of poor weather and funding challenges, the Hettinger cross-country team has been running strong, preparing for the upcoming state cross country meet in October. However, for many cross-country volunteers and participants, reaching the state meet has required more than just running and conditioning.

Over the past two years, Hettinger Public School reduced funding for the local crosscountry team, putting the program’s future at risk. According to Head Coach Stephanie Howe, the school board dropped funding for transportation, activity/entry fees, and coach pay. Howe said the school board made these changes with the reasoning that not enough students were involved in the sport and the expenses were consistently too high.

“Last year, [the school] decided not to pay for anything, except for the NDHSAA fee…” said Howe.

showed any signs of slowing down in part because of a supportive local community.

Following the budget decision, Head Coach Howe and Assistant Coach Zeta Drolc became volunteer coaches while local businesses financially supported the team.

“Thankfully [sponsors] have been able to keep us floating through the season with the funds that we have raised…” she said.

“Without the sponsor, we wouldn’t be operating.”

Howe said that Hettinger’s team numbers are comparable to other small towns across North Dakota. Out of 45 Class B cross-country teams, 22 have less than 5 girl runners.

S u p e r i n te n d e n t s / E l e m e n t a r y Principal:Open House-The open house was well attended by parents and students and went very smooth for the first time doing a K-12 open house.Lunch IncreaseFederal regulations state that the adult meal must be $0.75 above the highest student rate, which is $2.90 for lunch; this means we will either have to raise our adult meals from $3.50 to $3.65 or drop our student meal price to $2.75. Since we have more students eating than adults, it would have a smaller impact on the lunch account if we raised the adult prices. Start of School-There was a very smooth start to the school year, thank you to our staff for the great start to the school year!Completed Projects-The office, hallway, and boys bathroom projects are complete, this project was from the water damage in this spring – Insurance. The Lockdown locks are also complete – funded by Homeland Security. Update of the drainage system in the playground Secondary Principal Report:Fall School Open House – The open house went well with many students and parents taking the time to come and visit at the school. This is an activity that I would like to see continued for future years.Start to 2019-2020 – The school year has started well with few class changes taking place. The students seem to be back into the swing of the regular school day. However, we are experiencing some issue with the first floor ITV Lab that may result in some of the infrastructure of that lab needing to be replaced. Mr. Janikowski has set up a secondary way to view the class at this time while Bill Strasser, head of the ITV Network, works on remedies.High School Student Council – Advertising for this position ended today.

We will move forward with the interested parties and make a decision soon as to the new adviser.

Youth Entrepreneurs – Mr. Moser, Ms. Resner, and I met with a rep from Youth Entrepreneurs to discuss ways that they could enhance our business curriculum. Over the next few months, we will trying some of their products to evaluate future use.

Activities Director Report: Football: Both JH and High School football is up and running. First varsity game is this Friday in Scranton against Beach. JH/JV have a jamboree in Elgin next Monday.Volleyball: Both JH and High School volleyball are up and running. Varsity has their first competition in Killdeer next Saturday.Cross Country: We do have some cross country kids out.

The bulk are junior high kids.Miscellaneous-Porta-Potties: We will have two for the football field. They will be here for our first home game on September 6.

Student Council Report: No Report Unfinished Business: The Board had discussion on the Football Field and Softball Fields, concerning the placement of the snow fence installed by the Adams County Highway Department. The Board has asked to invite the Adams County Commissioner Chairman to the next regular school board meeting. Business Manager Heather Ebert will send an invite to the commissioner chairman.

New Business: Superintendent Moser and Business Manager Ebert submitted a Preliminary 2019-2020 Hettinger School District budget for the Board to review.

The Board preliminary discussed having a 4 day school week. The Board is seeking input from other schools that are using a 4 day school week on such items as: test scores; how it works with the new law of moving from school days to hours per school year; effects on extracurricular activities; how other communities went about finding the felling of the community on the subject. Superintendent Moser and Business Manager Ebert will submit to their list serve emails and find out from other schools that are participating in 4 day school weeks.

Christmas fair The Town and Country Community and Family Extension Leaders Club is happy to announce the coming Christmas Fair we sponsor. This year , the Craft Fair and Commercial Fair will be combined into one fair. It will be held at the Fair Building in Bison on Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 9am to 3pm. We anticipate 41 vendors to be there. Each vendor will also furnish a door prize.
