n September 20, the Adams County Commission voted to confirm the 2020 county budget. The total amount levied in 2020 county budget remained relatively consistent, dropping roughly three percent from the previous year. Although the total budget remained consistent, there were notable changes in the distribution of funds compared to 2019’s county budget. Compared to last year, the 2020 general fund increased by roughly twelve percent. Adams County Chairman Dustin Laufer explained that the increase in the general budget was likely due to an increase in labor costs and healthcare. “All county employees got a three percent increase,” said Laufer. “We did a special five percent increase for the sheriff’s deputies because after doing some research, we were a little low compared to other neighboring counties.” Laufer continued, “One of the biggest expenses is our health insurance. It was scheduled to go up twenty-six percent. Instead, we changed the policy to a high deductable policy and saved taxpayers money. After switching to the high deductable plan, it only increased seventeen percent. We really wanted to keep the same policy and consistency for our employees, but with financial constraint and budget in mind, we had to change policies…” BUDGET » PAGE 3

ast week Wednesday, the local Runnings store hosted their annual Ladies Night. The ladies themed event raised money for the nonprofit Communities Kicking Cancer, an area organization that provides homemade comfort blankets and $100 gas cards to people in the surrounding area that

have to travel for cancer treatments. According to Communities Kicking Cancer volunteer Arlene Walch, the nonprofit group has already donated over $13,600 in gas cards to south central and southwestern North Dakota and northwestern and north central South Dakota. “A lot of people in this area have to travel all the way to Bismarck or even

Fargo for cancer treatments,” said Walch. “The gas card can really help people absorb some of those travel costs and the blanket lets them know they are not fighting alone.” Runnings Store Manager Collin Blade said that every year, Runnings locations across the nation host a day specifically for nonprofit charities. Ultimately, it’s up to the local store to

decide which nonprofit charity to support. “We approached Arlene because we wanted to benefit a local group and had heard about Communities Kicking Cancer,” said Blade. “It’s a great group with a great mission, so we were happy to support their cause this year.” Customers, both men and women, were encouraged to stop down at the store to buy a

two-dollar, pink Ladies Night bucket and browse free samples. To attract more people, Runnings offered a storewide deal for anyone who bought a bucket. At the end of the night, Runnings donated one dollar to Communities Kicking Cancer organization for every bucket sold. “For anything that could fit in the bucket, RUNNINGS » PAGE 3

Connection Church comes to Hettinger FRANK TURNER

ince early May, a new Christian church, Connection Church, has been slowly growing in Hettinger. The new congregation has been meeting downtown every Sunday morning in the old coffee shop building on the end of Main Street. This new church is unique, however, in that the pastor is not based locally in Hettinger. In fact, the local Connection Church pastor, Pastor Stephen [Last Name] rarely sees the local congregation in person. Instead, sermons are prerecorded in Belle Fourche by Pastor Carson and later shown in Hettinger church a week later. Only once a month does Pastor Carson travel to Hettinger to do a live Sunday evening sermon in person for the local church. “We record our sermons

live in Belle Fourche and then send them to Hettinger where they are played the following week,” said Pastor Carson. “It’s a way for our church to spread the word to new audiences and locations.” Connection Church is a mission-focused church, keen on outreach to new communities. According to Pastor Carson, the church accomplishes their outreach goals by expanding or “planting” Connection Churches in new areas. The Hettinger church is Belle Fourche’s second “plant” church. Currently, the Belle Fourche church records their sermons for Hettinger and Rapid City, however moving forward, the church hopes to have a new “plant” set up in Bismarck soon. “We are a church very much focused on reaching out to new areas,” said PasCHURCH » PAGE 3
