EARLY HISTORY Baker doesn't share the "Wild West" history of many Montana towns even though the western heritage lives on and is celebrated here. Its beginning was in the early 1900's with the coming of the Milwaukee Railroad. Baker's original name was Lorraine, after the daughter of a railroad official. It was renamed Baker in 1908, in honor of A.G. Baker, Milwaukee Railroad's construction engineer for eastern Montana. The town started as a campground because surface springs and grass were abundant. In 1908, businesses were first established, and the first post office opened under the supervision of Robert Pearce. That year railroad crews built a dam to trap the water from the springs for the steam engines and Lake Baker, now called Baker Lake, was formed. The town attracted more businesses and by 1913 there were about 1,000 residents in the town. Agriculture was the economy's mainstay. The population grew as homesteaders settled where large ranches failed.
A quiet market town for farmers and ranchers, Baker's fortunes changed in 1915 when natural gas was discovered while a water well was being drilled. With the coming of oil production, the town grew. The town boomed during the late 60s and 70s. At one time the population grew to around 2,500 people with over 4000 in the county.

LOCATION
Baker is easily accessible using Highway 12 or Highway 7. Excellent airport facilities allow ease for those travelers who prefer air travel. Many tourist attractions and scenic wonders are just a few miles or hours from Baker. Twenty-five miles south of Baker is Medicine Rocks State Park. As the name implies, the park area is filled with large rock formations. Weathered sandstone rock with a Swiss cheese look are awe inspiring. They provide a natural playground for people and wildlife. The Rocks were a spiritual place for the Plains Indians. They were also a stopping place for Indian scouting parties and tepee rings are still visible. Makoshika State Park in Dawson County is about 75 miles north. The badlands area of the park was a former habitat for dinosaurs, and many fossil remains have been found there. A short distance from Makoshika is Intake, a fishing site noted for paddlefish, walleye, and catfish. Northeast of Baker 90 miles, is Medora, North Dakota. Now noted for many reasons, this tourist town was a favorite stomping ground of Teddy Roosevelt. One of its many tourist attractions is the Chateau de

Mores. Its amphitheater is the site for a nightly musical/comedy revue and music concerts from May through early September. Baker is also within easy driving distance of the Black Hills tourism area of South Dakota. In addition to the spectacular scenery, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial and several "Old West" sites appeal to tourists from all over the world. Also located in the Black Hills is Deadwood, SD. Long known for its rich hsitory pertaining to 1800s gold rush and notoriety for the murder and final resting place of Wild Bill Hickok, Deadwood has become more popular since gambling became legal. Baker is in the shortest route from the Canadian border near Plentywood to Deadwood. There are several stops along the Lewis and Clark Trail heading west into Montana from Baker including Pompey’s Pillar. Not far from there is the Battle of Little Bighorn where Custer’s Last Stand is re-enacted annually. Baker is a door to the many attractions for history lovers.

ECONOMY
Like most Montana towns, Baker's economy is based largely on agriculture. Wheat and barley are major farm crops. Cattle and sheep are the major livestock produced. The other major contributor to Baker's economy is oil and gas production. Many residents are employed by large oil exploration and drilling companies or oilrelated service companies. Major employers in the county are: Fallon Medical Complex - 108 Fallon County - 90, 10-15 seasonal Baker Schools- 84 Denbury Resources -120 regular and contracted Williston Basin - 48 Baker was founded by visionaries that had the ability to identify existing assets and explore new opportunities that have paved a path to our current prosperity. Montana ranchers continue to strive to perfect the process of providing a much needed product that impacts the world. Beef is the main staple in most people’s diet and the ranchers, through much sac-

rifice and dedication, provide this product without fail. Area farmers have captialized on the rich soil that produces an excellent crop nearly every year. Wheat production has provided many famers an excellent livelihood throughout the past years. The local market has expanded from sales within the country to sales that expand throughout the world. Oil production has supported this community for many years and provided excellent paying jobs and the creation of other supporting business infrastructures. The oil fields have been extremely important to our economic development. CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIALS
Offices for both the city and county administration are housed in the Fallon County Courthouse, a modern, spacious facility located at 10 West Fallon Avenue. City offices are located at the west end of the building, near the northwest entrance. Baker is governed by a mayor-council type of administration. The present mayor is Clayton Hornung. Two council members are elected from each of the city's two wards and serve four year terms. Rick Schell and Steve Fradenburgh represent Ward 1, Brandon Schmidt and Scott Anderson are Ward 2 councilmen. The City Council holds regular meetings the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. Fallon County operations are governed by a three-member commission. Com-
missioners serve six-year terms. Bill Randash is Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. He is joined by Steve Baldwin and Deb Ranum. The Commissioners meet in session the first full week of each month and the every Monday.

SOUTH SANDSTONE RESERVOIR
Avid fishermen are always looking for a new spot to catch the “big one”. The Sandstone Reservoir, located five miles southeast of Plevna, is a good place to drop that hook as some big ones are reeled in every now and then. Sandstone is stocked with black crappie, northern pike, smallmouth bass, walleye and yellow perch. The reservoir is approximately nine miles southwest of Baker by a gravel road, but the easiest route to the location is by taking Plevna Road South. In June, the Tom McGonigal Memorial Kids Fishing Day is held at South Sandstone. The MT Fish, Wildlife and Parks personnel educate children
on casting, hypothermia and fish identification. Children are allowed limited parental assistance for shoreline fishing, and door prizes are awarded throughout the day. Trophies are given for the most fish caught. The reservoir was built for a dual purpose, irrigation and recreation. It was dedicated September 12, 1976, and covers more than 114 acres.

GOLF COURSE
Fallon County is proud to have a nine hole golf course with two ponds and several small trees. It is located at the southeast edge of Baker at 78 Airport Road. The Lakeview Country Club overlooks the greens and is often used to host social events. Lakeview is a great nine hole regulation course from the longest tees it offers 3,330 yards of golf for a par of 36. The course was designed by Frank Hummel and opened in 1982. Lakeview is a daily fee golf course with a ‘Open To Public’ guest policy. The golf season runs from March to October during daylight hours. Several golf events and tournaments are held throughout the season. In addition, the Baker High School golf team uses the course each spring.

Across from the courthouse is a building that houses the ambulances, provides classroom space for meetings and training sessions. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and good entertainment is a requisite for cheerful spirits and a well-rounded lifestyle. The citizens of Baker believe in taking time to smell the roses and enjoy life to the fullest and with this in mind have created a line-up of enjoyable pastimes for every season of Community choir presents a free concert to the public during the holidays providing pleasure for musicians and spectators. The first week of June brings Baker's annual car show to town and the lineup of automobiles and motorcycles would rival those of towns a great deal larger. Bump ‘N Run Car Races are held in early June. July fourth is....well....the fourth of July to most folks but to the citizens of Baker, it's Fallon County Day. Baker Lake plays a big part in the entertainment for this mid-summer holiday. Volleyball tournaments, picnicking, fishing, horseshoe tournaments, sand castle building, and music are the order of the day. Lakeview Country Club at the north end of Baker Lake is
the place to be for the four person golf scramble. There are a host of games for kids. The day concludes at dusk with a magnificent display of fireworks over Baker Lake as spectators relax by the lakeshore with their friends and families. In September, the Baker Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture sponsors a Fall Festival. The festival is to bring the community closer together at a event with a family atmosphere. There are various vendors, games, contests and music for all ages. The Fallon County Fair is always scheduled for the third week of August. 4-H and FFA livestock judging, three exhibit halls filled with crafts, foods and business booths, and a carnival and midway are the order of the day. Rodeos, timed event competitions, and a demolition derby are grandstand attractions. Evening entertainment at the fair comes in the form of a concert performed by some of country music's most talented artists. Fallon Medical Complex (FMC), located in Baker, offers a number of healthcare services as a nonprofit charitable organization. FMC’s motto, “Friends Healing Friends”, conveys the hometown touch that sets the tone for how healthcare services are delivered to its patients and long term care residents. Its mission is to provide comfort, compassion and excellence in the promotion of quality life to all individuals. FMC, one of the largest employers in Fallon County, is comprised of a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital, a 15-bed Skilled Nursing Facility, a home care agency, and a Community Clinic with two physicians and three physician assistants. In addition to offering services in Baker, it also operates a satellite clinic in Wibaux, 45 miles to the north. FMC is predominantly a “primary care” provider in its service area. Accordingly, it provides family practice and preventative health services, routine hospital, and 24 hour emergency room services, long term care services, home-based skilled and personal care services, and physical and occupational therapy. It also provides cardiac rehab, telemedicine, FAA physicals, cryotherapy, and outpatient surgical services to patients one day a month. Patients requiring specialty care are referred to a facility of their choice that can provide the necessary services. FMC’s hospital offers a full service laboratory providing chemistry analysis, blood analysis, microbiology, blood bank, and DOT testing. It also offers a fully digital diagnostic imaging department with xray, mammography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and EKG. Its long term care department offers private rooms, seven days a week organized activities, a tastefully remodeled hair salon, an enhanced dining environment, and social services. Outdoor amenities include an expansive “healing garden” courtyard with a patio and deck that is readily accessible by all staff, patients, and residents.
In an effort to provide comprehensive medical care to the community, various providers from neighboring facilities routinely offer services to patients in Baker. For instance, chiropractic, optometric, and hearing aid clinics are held weekly at FMC. In addition, FMC’s primary care medical staff is augmented by visiting physicians who specialize in urology, obstetrics, and general surgery. “Friends of FMC Foundation” was formed a number of years ago to provide support to Fallon Medical Complex in the pursuit of its mission. All funds raised by the Foundation are used to provide scholarships to students working towards a healthcare career and to purchase equipment and services that are of direct benefit to FMC, its patients and its residents. The foundation holds a number of annual events including its December “Fantasy Food Fair”, its springtime “Lights of Life”, and its longstanding mid-summer “Mammo-Whammo” golf tournament. Parkview Retirement Complex - attached to Fallon Medical Complex - is an independent senior living complex offering both one and two bedroom apartments to Fallon County residents over the age of 60. It is restricted to self-sufficient retirees who are capable of self-care and independent of personal assistance. Residents typically participate in many FMC long-term care events, eat their noontime meals in the FMC dining room, and utilize a Lifeline remote monitoring system to notify a designated responder during a health emergency. Superior Villa Care is an assisted living center for the elderly who no longer wish to live alone in their homes but do not need the comprehensive care provided by a nursing home. They also offer adult daycare. The facility currently has 20 rooms with private baths. A large dining and living room area allows larger craft areas and more private cluster areas for families.

Try something new this year, add Baker, MT, to your list of places to visit. Baker is not the typical tourist stop on your vacation, but this town of approximately 1,800 has a lot to offer. Recreation: • Baker Lake, located in the center of the city, is used for boating, skiing, swimming and fishing. A gazebo, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, playground facilities, basketball court, outdoor amphitheater and a walking trail complete this recreation area. • Mangold Field softball complex with three fields used for T-Ball, baseball and softball events. • Baseball Field, located east of the hospital, is used for Babe Ruth and other ball games. • City Park, north of Fallon Medical Complex: picnic area, playground and free RV parking. • Centennial Park, located east of the baseball field, with a gazebo. • East Side Park located at East Seventh St. and Texas Avenue is a small playground just right for youngsters. • Iron Horse Park located off Sixth Street Southeast and Texas Ave. on the eastern shore of the Baker Lake is a skate park, pumptrack and coming in 2015 a splash park. • Lakeview Country Club: a nine-hole golf course for spring and summer. • O'Fallon Museum presents the history of southeastern Montana and the Baker area. The museum is open year around and admission is free. seven days a week for your convenience. • Baker Motor Sports Complex is located three miles west of Baker with Bump-N-Run and Motocross tracks. The Tri-Area Racing Association hosts a BumpN-Run sanctioned by the Montana Bump-N-Run Association every summer. • Fourth of July weekend is filled with games for children and adults. A fabulous array of fireworks, sponsored by the community of Baker, is displayed over Baker Lake the evening of the 4th. • Fallon County Fair is a big event in the Baker area. For four days folks enjoy rodeos, carnival rides, exhibits and night shows. The Fallon County Fair is held on the third weekend of August at the Fallon County Fairgrounds. • Winter sports include skating, sledding, snowmobiling, x-country skiing. • Medicine Rocks State Park is located between Baker and Ekalaka on Montana Highway 7. The park is 316 acres of unique rock formations and sits at an elevation of 3,441 feet. Medicine Rocks was considered a place of "big medicine" where Indian hunting parties conjured up magical spirits. One of the first tourists to Medicine Rocks State Part in the late 1800s was a young rancher named Teddy Roosevelt. • Fallon County Shooting Range located three miles west of Baker has outdoor trap, archery, pistol and rifle ranges. An indoor gun and archery range under construction will be opening early 2015. • The Fallon County Recreation Dept. is committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents of the Baker area through development and promotion of recreation and enrichment opportunities, providing support to and encouraging use of community parks and facilities. PLEVNA-CITY OF CHURCHES
Cradled in the arm of south Sandstone Creek 13 miles west of Baker, MT on Highway 12, rests the tranquil community of Plevna. Originally a niche carved out of the prairie during the construction of the Milwaukee Railroad, today it is a gentle place to live, if a quiet life is high on one’s list of priorities. The Milwaukee station was first named Edina, but later changed to Plevna, becoming incorporated in 1916. At that time, the population was 300 or more. In 1953 the last of the Milwaukee passenger trains traversed the lines. Burlington Northern purchased the railroad in March of 1981. Today, trains rumble through day and night stirring light sleepers from dreamland with four blasts as the engines approach the town’s railroad crossing. When heading east, cars are brimming with coal from mines in Wyoming and Montana enroute to the east coast for the production of energy. In 1909, the first U.S. Post Office was established. Plevna soon became a thriving community with a diversified business base including two livery barns, two banks, a newspaper, three general merchandise stores, ice cream station, hardware store, barbershop, three hotels and restaurants, and at one time, a jail. At various intervals there were physicians. The town operated an electric light plant, telephone office, town hall, grain elevators, lumber company, gas and service stations, machine shops, dairy and even an automobile dealership. Plevna continues to preserve its Russian interpretation - city of churches - offering four denominations for worship. Three cemeteries lie on the outskirts of town. Though the census of Plevna has dropped significantly, it appears there continues to exist a desire in
the hearts of some for the simpler life without fast food chains and malls. Plevna is home to a bar and cafe, construction company, Senior Citizen Center and Post Office. People have moved away and after a time, moved back. New families have settled into the community. Plevna’s public school has an enrollment of 81 and offers grades K-12. The Senior Citizen Center is the hub for various activities, including pool, crafts, meetings or simply a place to have a cup of coffee and catch up on the news. Though most of the businesses that came with the Milwaukee are gone, the post office still serves the community. The original post office has recently been demolished, but the new one is just across the street! Old graying buildings with echoes of yesteryear mingle with modern construction and a new highway promises to ease the trip for those who travel the long stretches of highway east and west. Plevna is a place of respite for some, a permanent home for others, and for me and perhaps you, it is a little bit of heaven on earth.
