We’ve had a busy summer getting things ready for the start of the 2022-2023 school year. Finally, the moment is finally here, and we are excited that we’ve welcomed students and families back to school! Our district mission is to cultivate a safe, highly effective, and collaborative learning environment where every student can succeed, and to do so in partnership with
students, parents, staff, and the community. If you are the parent or guardian of a school-age child, please visit the school website for the academic year calendar, details of bell schedules, bus schedules, school supply lists, and more. Please note that we are continuing Wednesday early release times to provide critical teacher collaboration and training
time for our educational staff. Now is a good time to take care of school and activity registration activities online, make a family plan for transportation and good attendance, and learn more about support programs offered by the schools. With school in session again, please be extra mindful to observe crosswalks and school zone speed

Save the Date - Fall Back to School Nights and Parent-Teacher Conferences • Kalmiopsis Elementary, Azalea Middle School, and Brookings-Harbor High School will host an open house night for school families from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13. Come tour the schools, meet your students teachers, and learn about how to get involved as a volunteer or in groups such as Site Council, Parent Teacher Organization, and Boosters. • Save the Date: Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences are Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 9-10, with timeslots from 4 to 8 p.m.
Thank you to community school supply drives
The Brookings Nazarene’s Community Care Team Backpack project was a huge success this August. They gathered donations, and 20 multigenerational volunteers donated time to organize, sort, and assemble 150 backpacks filled with school supplies for local children. Brookings Presbyterian and BiCoastal Media also partnered to provide backpacks and a donation drop-off location. The backpacks were distributed to local students via the Brookings Harbor Food Bank, Brookings-Harbor School District’s McKinney-Viento (Homeless Student) Services, Every Child Curry County (Foster Child/Family Support), and the local Oregon Department of Human Services Office. Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative also ran a summer supply drive countywide. Due to the overwhelming generosity of CCEC Members and the Dollar Store, they were able to begin distributing supplies Tuesday, August 30th to co-op member families while supplies lasted. Supplies were available for pick up during business hours at the CCEC Brookings location, 815 Railroad St.
September is SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH The BHSD School Board recognized September 2022 as Suicide Prevention Month, and encourages all citizens to learn the warning signs, trust their gut and use that information to ask a troubled friend, colleague, or family member “Are you okay?” and be prepared to listen. BHSD Special Education and Section 504 Child Find Notice Brookings Harbor 17C has a duty to locate, evaluate and identify any child residing in the District who qualifies for Special Education services or any child attending the public schools who may require Section 504 accommodations or services. Children eligible for special education include those children with disabilities who have autism, deaf-blindness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury, acquired brain injury, visual impairment, or developmental delay and who, because of such an impairment, need special education services. Children eligible for Section 504 accommodations or services include those children who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. If you suspect your child has a disability and may need special education services or 504 accommodations, or if you would like additional information, please contact your child’s teacher, or call the District’s Student Services Department at 541-412-1488.
Food Service Information BHSD schools provide breakfast free of charge before the start of the school day in the Kalmiopsis Elementary, Azalea Middle School, and Brookings-Harbor High School cafeterias. In addition, lunch is free for grades K-8th daily at the elementary and middle school. Lunches at the high school are $3, and 9th-12th graders can fill out an application for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income. Summer Programs Highlights This summer, Brookings-Harbor School District was able to offer free summer activities to hundreds of local children free of charge. The funding for this program came from a portion of the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) Summer Learning Grant awarded to the district for K-8 enrichment activities. Brookings-Harbor High School coaches and teams volunteered time to offer multi-day camps for baseball, softball, strength and conditioning, wrestling, track and field, soccer, football, and volleyball, for youth entering Kindergarten through 9th grade. In addition, BHSD and the Del Norte School District music programs teamed up to provide a joint band camp experience for 5th to 9th graders capped with a joint concert on August 12th. The grant was used to waive the registration fee for local youth to participate, while at the same time allowing the teams and programs to earn the money back toward their annual fundraising efforts. In addition, BHSD again partnered with the City of Brookings and Wild Rivers Dance Studio to help relieve the financial burden of lesson registration fees for local families. Families were able to request financial assistance through the program to receive a session of swim lessons at no cost and discounted dance camp fees.

Fall Sports Preview
Bruin athletics are already underway for 2022-23. Fall sports and activities include Cheer, Cross Country, Football, Soccer, and Volleyball; as well as Marching Band and Color Guard. The Bruins have a restructured league this year in the 3A Far West that brings together teams of 3A or smaller size across a vast stretch of Southwest Oregon. The league includes the Cascade Christian Challengers (Medford), Coquille Red Devils, Douglas Trojans (Winston), Glide Wildcats, Lakeview Honkers, North Valley Knights (Grants Pass), Rogue River Chieftains, South Umpqua Lancers (Myrtle Creek), St. Mary’s Crusaders (Medford), and the Sutherlin Bulldogs. BHHS also looks forward to non-league competitions against local coastal rivals Del Norte Warriors (Crescent City), Gold Beach Panthers, and Pacific Pirates (Port Orford-Langlois). The community and all Bruin alumni are invited to Homecoming activities the week of Oct. 16-22.

FISHING CLUB
If anyone is interested in volunteering with the Brookings-Harbor High School Angling Club please email Michelle Prudden at michellep@brookings.k12.or.us or call (541) 469-2108 Ext. 6. We are always in need of usable fishing gear and monetary donations to cover fishing licenses and Student Angler Federation fees. Donations can be made to Tina Peters in the front office at BHHS.
Colton Hill- 11th grade, 2nd year in the club. This summer he fished Brownlee Reservoir on the Idaho border, and Snake River for smallmouth bass, crappie, and catfish. He also fly fished multiple areas of South Dakota, including the yellow stone river for cutthroat trout. This year Colton is looking forward to growing the number of anglers within the high school club. He is excited to fish in places like Tenmile, Garrison, and Selmac lakes.
Eric Howard- 11th grade, 2nd year in the club. Pictures are of Eric working as a deckhand for Andy Martin at Brookings Fishing Charters. This picture is special because Eric was able to work the boat that Dave Kuehn fished on and Dave is the president of the Oregon South Coast Fishermans – one of our community-based fishing clubs.
