Bulldogs hungry for season victory

The Bulldog varsity football team is coming off a 3 and 5 record for the 2014 season. Unfortunately we graduated seven very good players from that team. After having won no more than one game in the previous few seasons, that bunch really helped to raise the expectations for this year’s team. We do retain the services of six juniors from last year who now attempt to fill the leadership roles now vacant.

Three of those new seniors will be three-year letter winners.

With 34 total players, the most in quite awhile, we feel that we may be on

the right track towards establishing a perennially competitive football team. That number is bolstered largely by a class of 14 freshmen. These young men are a talented group of individuals. If they find themselves dissatisfied enough with finishing out of the playoffs year after year and decide to do something about it, I believe they have the talent to really make some noise. With a group of 22 seventh and eighth graders chomping at the bit right behind them, the potential for close to 50 players in three years is a reality. I’m sure the possibility of having to go to

11-man exists if that were to happen, but with that many, we’d be in great shape, compared to most other 11-man teams in the A division.

Practices have been going very well, with great attitudes and tremendous work ethic. The boys are conditioning exceptionally hard, and believe they can be successful.

Our first game with Trenton-Trinity Christian was an affirmation of that fact. We played a really good game, with very few penalties, few turnovers, and a defense that stymied all of the Tigers

plans for four complete quarters. Almost every eligible player on the team saw significant action in that 40 to 0 game, and you couldn’t have asked for a better situation to start out the season. Unfortunately, the Lemmon-McIntosh Cowboys had a similar experience against us in their first game of the season just one week later. They proved to be much more than we could handle up front and controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage for the entire game.

Four turnovers eliminated any chances we had of trying to get back into it, and they rolled us 36 to 0.

This team has a lot of talent, although much

of it is limited on experience. We have three seniors and two juniors who played consistently throughout the season last year, so we are going to have to build as the season goes along. It is exciting for the future, but it may take us awhile to get our sea legs. The

strengths of this team are its overall quickness and a strong desire to improve. They practice hard and play hard. Our weakness is our inexperience.

We make up for that with enthusiasm and effort every day.

The Bowman County Bulldogs Cross Country Team capped off last season with two state places and two All-State runners, but they are not looking to settle for what was; this seasons Bulldogs have high expectations on growing from past success.

To accomplish those goals, the Bulldogs will have to fill some holes.

Graduation hit the boy’s team pretty hard.

With two runners gone from last season’s team, the Bulldogs will look to newcomers Mason Moran and Kamrin Madrigal to fill in.

Those two will have a great nucleus to work with as seniors Alex Bartholomay and Brayden Miller lead a potent Bulldog attack.

Andrew Miller and Ethan Fischer will also be counted on as key returners for the boy’s team.

Junior high runners Noah Wokal and Kevin Fischer will round out the boy’s team.

On the girl’s side, the cupboard came fully stocked, as attrition claimed only one of the Bulldogs’ returning state runners.

The Bulldogs, however, have a bunch of fresh faces ready to step up.

Returning All-State runner Lacey Feist, along with fellow Junior Mikayla Bartholomay, will lead the Bulldogs into the 2015 campaign.

Alexius Miller, Abigail Bartholomay, and Brenna Wokal are all returning state runners from last season. With nine new runners on the girl’s team, depth will be a major advantage for the lady Bulldogs.

Both Bulldogs squads start the season off ranked in the North Dakota Coaches Poll, as the boy’s team enters with a third place ranking, and the girl’s post a fifth place rank.

As an individual, Alex Bartholomay enters the season ranked No. 3 for the Class B Boy’s Division.

Hettinger/Scranton Nighthawks football

This 2015 Hettinger-Scranton Nighthawk team enters the season with high expectations as they return almost all of their team from last year.

They will be without talented lineman Nevan Weaver who is still rehabilitating his knee injury from last season.

The football publication “Pigskin Preview” has the Nighthawks at No. 3 in Region 5 with New Salem-Glen Ullin rated No. 1. In the Region 5 coach’s poll, the Nighthawks are rated No. 1 and Mott-Regent No. 2.

Returning All-Region selections are seniors Brandon Pierce, Colbey Steeke, Tanner Sanford and Braxton Yates and sophomore Isaiah Kludt.

Coach Burwick’s comments on the team: “Our team strength will once again be our overall experience. We are very talented in the backfield and our offensive line will have to come together as a strong unit. I feel we will be able to run the ball very well. We will continue to work on improving our passing game. We have several all-region players back that we will really rely on this season.

We play in a very good Region so we will have to continue to improve each and every week. I really believe this group is the type of team to take us to the next level. We have 12 very talented freshmen,

I was unable to get comments from Coach Kohler by press time but heard his comments on KNDC’s Coaches Corner. He is optimistic about this year’s team as they are off to a 5-2 record. The Junior Varsity is currently 2-0 and the C Squad has won their only match so far. Taylor Burwick is doing a great job in the assist department while Elizabeth Thompson leads in kills.

Hettinger/Scranton Night Hawks Cross-Country grows

Stephanie Howe is coaching the Hettinger-Scranton cross country team again this year.

She has doubled the number of kids out this year from last year and is excited about the upcoming year. She feels her returning kids will all improve on their times from last year. The following are her comments on the 2015 team: “I have returning this year, Carlos Martinez 9th, Cale Schalesky 10th, Kalyn Schalesky 9th, Rebecca Knutson 10th, Samantha Knutson 10th, and McKenna Poss 11th.

My newcomers for Varsity are Zach Raasch 12th, Eric Steen 12th, Hayden Sadowsky 12th , Nevan Weaver 11th and Elizabeth Bartholmy 10th. My junior high team are Beth Lien 7th, Katrina Poss 7th and Sidra Sadowsky 7th.”

“I would venture to say that practice has gone great with this group of kids. They work hard and don’t complain. Being that most of these kids have never ran cross country before it’s hard to have a prediction for this season until our first meet. I am unsure on how they will do in competition. We started practice August 10th with quite a bit of conditioning right away. One thing we need to work on pre-season is our conditioning. They need to be running over the summer and off season to stay in shape. I did have some of the kids that ran and conditioned this summer, but with jobs and activities it gets hard for them to find the time.

Unfortunately we do not have an elementary program for cross country up and running which would lead to an advantage in competitions.”

Cowboys gear up for season after championship loss

Lou Dobitz is the Head Coach of the Killdeer High School football team, and he is joined by his assistant Coaches: Josh Karey, Taylor Bang, Daniel Kerr, Andrew DesRosier, and Tate Harris. Lou is entering his seventh year as the head coach, and has a record of 37 wins and 21 losses at Killdeer, as well as a career record of 89 wins and 39 losses. Last season, the football team went nine and two, and were the 2014 ND State 11A runner-ups.

Killdeer returns six starters on offense and five starters on defense.

There were some very good players from last season who graduated, and Coach Dobitz knows it will be difficult to replace them, especially

some of the speed that was lost. Early in the season, Coach Dobitz will be trying to find the right combination of players to replace the starters who graduated, and may end up playing some young, inexperienced players in a few positions. Lou says they have some good team speed and a good core group of players with experience, and the offensive line and linebackers may be the strengths for the team this year.

Killdeer has a concern with the depth of the roster and hopes to stay healthy.

The passing game may be needed at times, so they will be trying to find receivers early in the season. Coach Dobitz says “We are hoping to see improvement by all of our special teams. We will need to be ready for some tough teams early in the season. In our first

Killdeer cross country returning 3 All-State girls

Nathan Horgeshimer is entering his fifth season as the Head Coach of the boys and girls cross country teams. Last season, the girls cross country team finished third in the West Region and fifth t at State, while the boys ie cross country team finished 13 in the West Region and 28 at State.

The girls cross country team returns a lot of firepower from last year’s team. The only team that had more individuals on the podium at the state meet last year was Hillsboro, who was the state champion for the fourth year in a row. Girls cross country is deep in the west and the girls will look to be in the title hunt at both the region and state level with a number of very evenly matched teams.

Sydney Andersen, Danielle Benz, and Shawnee Hansen led the way last year and should continue to do so. Trae Murray returns from a season-ending injury last season and looks strong to start fall practice. Amber Kukla is the lone senior and has been a consistent runner since she was a 7th grad-

er. There is a lot of depth behind those girls with some veterans and a nice group of junior high runners that will improve as the season goes on.

The boys cross country team lost their top runner from last year but return the next two fastest athletes, Dukart and Calkins. Those two, along with some transfer students and newer runners look to greatly improve on their results from last year. The boys are still young but should make some big strides the second half of the season with some training and experience and should be competitive in the West Region.

Ashlynn Aman is the Head Girls Volleyball Coach at Killdeer Public School. This will be her fourth year coaching, and third as the varsity head coach. Aman’s assistant coach is Kayla Peake and this is her first year coaching high school volleyball. Peake will be a great addition to the program because she is a high school English teacher so she already has a relationship with the team.

Last season, Killdeer went into the region tournament as the No. 8 ranked seed and lost in the first round to Glen Ullin/Hebron. The volleyball team lost some key players last year, but they have a couple returning starters and younger girls to fill the vacated spots.

Returning for the Killdeer Cowboys are Kasey Houghton, Taycee Butts, Savannah Rogers, Gabi Flaget, Ayana Kovash, and Lakken Bice. New to the starting rotation this year is Hannah Kling, Bridgette Reiss, and Elissa Steffan.

Coach Aman says “Savannah Rogers will be returning for her second year as our setter.

She has great hands and makes smart decisions on and off the court. She is a great role model for the team and someone the younger girls can look up to and seek advice from. Taycee Butts and Kasey Houghton will be a huge asset to our team both being outside hitters. Taycee is a 3rd year starter so she has lots of experience, but has never played as an outside hitter. Wildfire leaning on experience to lead them through the season

cbenz@countrymedia.net Ron Benson is starting his 30th season as Head Coach of the Mott-Regent Wildfire, and he said he still loves it to this day.

“I just enjoy the heck out of it [football],” Benson said.

Last year the Wildfire finished fourth in the region, edging out Hettinger/Scranton for the final spot in the regional playoffs.

They will look to build on last year’s success.

Coach Benson said the experience his team has will be a big strength as they face their opponents.

Brady Wegh enters his third year as quarterback and should hurt opposing defenses with his arm and his legs. Wegh’s experience under center is something Benson enjoys having.

“That is a positive thing,” Benson said.

is returning most of their players last year on offense and he is returning his entire defensive squad. They lost three seniors to graduation last year and have six in the incoming class. Overall 22 athletes came out for the team, a good number, Benson said, considering the size of the school.

“We’re happy with [the number], but we always wished we had more,” Benson said.

The Wildfire with have

the benefit of speed, as Benson said one of his team’s greatest strengths will be quickness.

Something his team will need to navigate through is the depth at quarterback. Though Wegh is the solidified starter, his backup is banged up right now, so keeping Wegh healthy is crucial.

Benson said he wants his team to be more physical on the field, and that the attitude of his squad is exceptional.

“We’re just going to out and play our hearts out and whatever happens, happens, that’s all you can ask for,” Benson said.

Though they were able to make the regional playoffs last year, Benson said every game is crucial and the region is stacked with some talented football teams.

“Every game is important right now as we go forward, even though four teams make the playoffs, all these teams are pretty good that we’re going to play,” Benson said.

The Wildfire enter the season with a seasoned team. After losing five seniors to graduation last year Head Coach Aryn Dangerud said that the five seniors and five juniors have plenty of varsity experience.

“We have a team that has had some varsity experience which has been a problem in the past,” Dangerud said.

Of the five seniors lost, three were starters, so Dangerud will look to some of the older girls for leadership.

Eighteen total girls are out for this year’s squad and will be spread out across an A, B and C team. Dangerud said they will carry 10 players on the varsity team, a number she said was a little lower than normal,

but it is early on and she will need to see her team in action before making any changes.

Dangerud has two players that stand at 5-foot, 9-inches and one that measures at 6 foot, so blocking should be a strength of her team.

Attacking and serving could also end up being a high point of her squad as the season progresses.

The coach said the team can always work on defense and double blocking, but what she really wants out of her team is for them to close games out, something that they had a hard time with last year.

“I think we’re all excited to see what a more experienced team is,” Dangerud said. “With a full deck of cards it’s going to be interesting how the season plays out.”

Lady Tigers look to duplicate 2014 success

As Taylor Hafner enters her fourth season as the Head Coach for the New England Tiger Volleyball team she is excited at what the lady Tigers accomplished last year, and hopes to use that success as a building block for this year’s team. The Tigers ended last year’s season with 23 wins and 15 losses and a thirdplace finish in the Region 7 Tournament.

With only losing two seniors—Taylor Hewson and Maddie Humleker— from last years roster, New England has some big shoes to fill. With Hewson being a powerhouse all around player and Humleker known for her phenomenal passing skills, the two girls had a big role in New England’s success last year. The experience that Hewson

and Humleker brought to the court is something that Hafner is looking at this year’s group of senior’s to lead by experience and fill the void that the two graduated seniors left.

The Tiger varsity team is lead by senior’s Middle Blocker Jenna Ehlis, Setter and Outside Hitter Hallie Peterson, Outside Hitter Linzee Volk, and Defensive Specialist Allie Kuske. One junior Defensive Specialist Adrienne Roller, sophomores, Setter Paige Ehlis, Libero, and Defensive Specialist Victoria Jalbert, Middle Blocker Hailee Kuske, Outside Hitter Kalli Manning, and one freshman Outside Hitter Elizabeth Kaufman add to the rest of the varsity roster.

A weakness that Hafner would like to improve is their serving game, and to be more aggressive to go after the ball.

The Tigers are starting the season off with a record of 2-3 as they lost to Center-Stanton in the Coal Country Invitational Tournament in Beulah.

The Tigers took second place in the silver division

at that tournament. They also had a non conference loss to Buffalo, S.D. The Tigers lost their first regional game to Heart River which the game went into 5 close sets with a score of 2 to 3.

Although the beginning of the season isn’t exactly the way Hafner wanted things to go, she is hoping that once the young lady Tigers find their chemis-

try, the outcome will be different.

“This year’s team is going to be one of the most versatile teams I’ve had in New England. As they become more comfortable playing next to each other they will start to mesh better on the court and will have many different options when attacking the floor,” Hafner said.

In his third year as the head coach for the Trinity Titans football team, John Odermann feels like his team ended the season on a strong note, and hopes to build on that this year.

Despite losing three important games by a combined eight points, and falling short to making the playoffs with a loss by one point to Watford City, Odermann is hoping to use those losses as experience this year.

“Our kids we competed well last year, and came up a little short for the playoffs, but we right there and we were competing with the best teams in the state at the end,” Odermann said.

The 2015 season is off to a good start as the Titans are 2-0 with a 35 to 21 victory over Killdeer in the season opener. The Titans also beat Kindred 42 to 29 in their second game of the season.

Even though the Titans lost 12 seniors to graduation, those seniors were able to be replaced with 12 more seniors this year.

Odermann is happy with the fact that he has eight guys with varsity experience on his offensive line, and also the experience

that the defensive line has.

“Having that kind of experience coming back especially on the offensive and defensive line just gives you a good head start on other teams,” Odermann said.

The Titans strength this year is their passing game, which has showed in Trinity’s first two games of the season as their quarterback had a total of 802 yards passing. Odermann feels like this year’s team is one of the more physical teams that he has coached and would like to show off their running game and prove that the Titans are a duel threat offense.

With the AA West Region being a solid region again this year, and with Valley City moving over to the west side, the Titans know that they have some tough games ahead of them. Odermann realizes with the challenging schedule his team faces, the Titans need to prepare every week and turn any weaknesses that they may have into strengths.

Odermann would also like to thank the kids that have come out to play from New England this year. Since the start of the Trinity Co-op with New England, Odermann is excited to see the number of kids that have come from New England to

play football this year.

“Were really happy to have the kids that we have come up from New England, from [grades] 7 through 12 especially, but I want to make special note of the high school kids that came out this year. We got nine kids 9 through 12 [grade] this year that came out. That’s phenomenal because we haven’t had numbers like

that in a long long time.

To be successful we got to have participation in that Co-op, and the New England kids that we have are good quality kids and were excited to have them on the team.

We want as many New England kids as we can possibly get up here, because it just makes us a better football team,” Odermann said.
