SHHS FOOTBALL Big senior class is quickly picking up new system; motivated by last year

A

nyone expecting to see the three yards and a cloud of dust offense that has been a staple at St. Helens for decades will be in for a surprise this fall. The Lions are in their first season under new head coach Jared Phillips, who has implemented a spread offense in place of the veer option that had become synonymous with St. Helens football.

For a senior-laden squad, such a transition might seem difficult. These players grew up learning the veer. However, over the past couple of seasons the Lions gradually started integrating some elements of the spread.

That, coupled with the proliferation of such attacks throughout televised football games, has eased the transition.

“It hasn’t been really hard learning the offense. It’s a couple things where we’ve got read routes, just getting the communication down to where everybody’s on the same page,” said senior quarterback Gage Bumgardner. “We’ve basically got the same coaching staff as last year, just with one coach gone. In terms of relationships and stuff like that, we’re in great shape.”

Bumgardner will be the one deciding which of the team’s many athletes will be getting the ball – ideally in space with only one defender to beat. In order to lessen the pressure on the quarterback and the ball carriers, the offensive line will also need to quickly grasp the new concepts.

With the 265-pound Zartman and 195pound senior Corey West, the Lions have a couple of athletic guards. They should be especially dangerous when they’re pulling and getting in front of running backs as lead blockers.

Those two should also terrorize opposing quarterbacks from their spots at defensive end in defensive coordinator Cory Young’s revamped system.

While the defense struggled at times last year – yielding more than 30 points in five of their nine games – the team’s 1-8 record weighed heavily on their minds in the offseason.

“We’ve had nine months since the end of the season and I know that every single one of our guys has worked hard to prepare for this season since the end of last season,” Bumgardner said.

The team was in the weight room throughout the summer and many of them are visibly bigger and stronger than they were a season ago. Running back Tanner Long, for example, is listed at 180 pounds – up from 165 a season ago.

The 2012 roster was dominated by juniors. As seniors, that same group is eager to improve in 2013.

“We have a lot more experience this year. We have a lot of returning seniors. Last year we had two that played, plus a kicker. I would say everyone is really determined, everyone is really motivated by the season we had last year. We have nothing to lose,” Zartman said.

1st game takeaways There were a lot of positives to take from St. Helens’ season-opening, five-overtime win against Cleveland.

First and foremost, these guys have a lot of heart.

There were several instances in which the team easily could have folded during the four-hour game. Specifically, Tanner Long, Brennan Norton and Gage Bumgardner showed the ability to seemingly will themselves to extra yards while carrying the ball. When the team needed a big play on third or fourth down, they regularly came up with them when it looked like they’d be tackled for a loss.

Second, Jacob Zartman can be unstoppable at times at defensive end. His five sacks prove that.

Last, the team needs to clean things up. SHHS can’t continue to turn the ball over five times and commit 19 turnovers a game and expect to win.

Senior linebacker Brennan Norton is strong enough to stuff the run and athletic enough to play pass coverage.

Coach speak: Jared Phillips, 1st year Phillips on switch from veer offense to spread offense: It’s been a pretty smooth transition. We have a smart football team. Basically, when you turn on the TV you see a lot of spread offenses. I think our kids are in tune with that and they know what’s going on. They had a pretty decent foundation going into it. A lot of it is just refining the details of every play, every pass protection we have, every run play. Just making sure they know their responsibilities on every play.

Overall the transition has been pretty smooth.

Phillips on Northwest Oregon Conference: I know we have four new coaches in our league, which is going to make it very interesting. (They are at St. Helens, Milwaukie, Sandy and Parkrose.) For those four, including myself, it’s kind of an unknown scheme-wise what they’re going to do.

Obviously Sherwood’s going to be very good. We’re a little bit unsure about Wilsonville because they graduated so many seniors last year. But we know the coach, we know what he’s going to run – double tight, two back, running scheme.

We know what they’re going to do on defense. We know that Sherwood’s going to be very good. Wilsonville’s always tough. Other than that, it’s hard to say.

Phillips on SHHS players to watch: Tanner (Long) is going to make a lot of plays for us.

Gage Bumgardner is very savvy in the pocket. He has really good footwork. His ability to slide left or right, or up in the pocket and get outside, break contain and use his legs to make some plays. It’s just great to have a senior quarterback who is very heady and very savvy.

Jacob Zartman, an offensive lineman, defensive lineman. He’s going to make plays all over the field. He will be on the sideline making tackles, he will lock down the middle of the field for us as well in the run game. He flies around. He runs well for a 265-pound kid. He’s just all over the place.

Chris Gray has gotten a lot better. He’s been a big surprise throughout the summer and throughout doubles. He makes quick cuts, he has good vision as a running back and he catches the ball well.

Bryce (Bumgardner), the newcomer, he’s a sophomore. He played freshman last year but I have no worries about the speed of the game; he’s already playing at a varsity speed. We’re excited to see what he does.

Brennan (Norton) played running back last year but he didn’t get the ball a whole lot. He’ll get the ball a lot more. He runs tall, but he runs with high knees and he takes away angles quickly and gets guys to arm tackle. He does a good job of breaking arm tackles.

Conference breakdown This season looks to be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory. Four programs in the Northwest Oregon Conference have new head coaches. Whether they will vastly alter their teams’ attacks remains to be seen, but chances are changes will be aplenty.

St. Helens is among those four schools, along with Sandy, Parkrose and Milwaukie. Of those teams, Milwaukie had the most success in 2012, finishing third in the Northwest Oregon Conference.

The two teams that finished ahead of Milwaukie look to be the favorites again in 2013. League champion Sherwood went 13-0 last season en route to its second state title in the last three years. The Bowmen won it all in 2010 and 2012, with a runner-up finish in 2011.

League runner-up Wilsonville, meanwhile, lost in the first round of the state playoffs. The Wildcats lost three tremendous offensive weapons. Two of those three are playing major Division I football: Johnny Ragin with the California Golden Bears and Tanner Shipley with the Boise State Broncos.

How Wilsonville replaces their production remains a question mark.

Parkrose returns a few All-NWOC players from a season ago.

With the bulk of its roster in tact, St. Helens stands to improve greatly from last season. While the Lions were winless in conference play, four of their seven losses were by 10 points or fewer.

This year’s squad will look to get back to the postseason. The Lions’ last trip to the state playoffs came in 2011, when they lost in the first round to the West Albany Bulldogs.

SH H S V O L L E Y B A L L St. Helens has sights set on an NWOC championship in 2013

H

eight is a valuable commodity on the volleyball court and the St. Helens Lions have plenty of it. Not only do the Lions have a pair of 6-1 middle blockers in senior Gabby Susee and junior Taylor Albertson, they have a pair that are athletic and quick.

One of those two will hold fort in the front line of the Lions’ attack throughout the whole season.

“For a crucial point, chances are they’re gonna put ’em down. We haven’t had that – where you have two solid hitters that will be in the front row that can pound one down,” said St. Helens coach Tom Ray. While the two of those will stand out – both literally and figuratively – they are far from being the only asset on the St. Helens squad. The Lions’ lineup is balanced throughout with plenty of well-rounded athletes.

When asked to describe the team’s strongest attribute, senior Kali Moore answered “probably literally our strength. Everyone is equal.

We’re well rounded as a team.”

Moore, along with sophomore Logan Kalauli, senior Krista Hardy and junior Rianne Tupper figure to fill the outside hitter positions flanking Susee and Albertson.

Hardy, in particular, looks to have the edge for the right front position.

“She has a good vertical and when she hits it, about 99 out of 100 is going to hit the court. Having her on the right side… if our setters need to set back, AT TEAM CAMP WE KNOW they’ll have confidence in her WE DID REALLY WELL. WE because she’s gonna hit the court,” Ray said.

Ross was one of five seniors who graduated from last year’s – Kylie Reinholdt team. This year’s squad isn’t Senior setter worried about the loss of those players, though. Moore, Susee, Albertson, Reinholdt and senior defensive specialist Madison Kaplan all played extensively last year. That group has had no problem welcoming this year’s newcomers into the fold.

“Last season’s team meshed so well and I feel like even coming in with another group of people, this is meshing like the same, pretty much,” Moore said. “We have no attitudes on the court. Everyone gets along. It’s the perfect mesh.”

The group really started to come together during team camp in Seaside over the summer.

“At team camp we know we did really well. We worked together well as a team. We’re just really excited for the season,” said Reinholdt.

Between the team’s experience, athleticism and chemistry, the goals for this season are fairly lofty.

“Winning league. It’s a good goal,” said Reinholdt. “We need to take it step by step and work on all the little things.”

Moore took the step-by-step approach one step further.

“Game by game, practice by practice,” she said.

Coach speak: Tom Ray, 13th year Ray on attention to detail: If they take care of the little things, they’ll come out on top. We’re not looking past anybody.

Ray explaining the ‘the little things’: Kali (Moore) plays left front. The little things for her, for example, would be on offense, making sure her approach is there. Really aggressive on her approach, making sure she reaches high. On defense, if they set outside, her taking care of the little things from left front is busting back, getting to her defensive position way before the girl hits. Way before. That’s what they’re working on.

The whole team, when Gabby (Susee) is hitting in the middle, if they’re not swarming the hitter or covering the hitter, they’re not taking care of that little thing. They all can do it.

Serving, it’s taking the deep breath, we call it. Before every serve. Chances are if they take the deep breath, there’s a 90-percent chance the serve goes over. If they don’t, odds are it doesn’t go over.

Setters, if Kylie (Reinholdt) or Hailee (Fischer) doesn’t do their prep step – load up their legs before they set – they’re not gonna be ready for it. The set’s not gonna be good. If they prep, chances are it’s gonna be a good set.

It’s taking care of the little things.

Ray on attacking the net: They’re very aggressive hitting. You’ve got Kali, you have Gabby, Taylor (Albertson) – all of them are all-league. All of them that returned last year are allleague, so they have confidence in their hitting. And they’re quick. Gabby used to be a high jumper in track so she’s gone through it. She’s pretty quick. She’s gotten fast through her club season. Taylor, our other middle, Logan (Kalauli) who’s a young middle who will probably play middle and outside – they’re just quick.

They’re athletes, and they have confidence. And they can hit.

Coach Tom Ray is confident in his group of girls this season. The way he sees it, the Northwest Oregon Conference is a two-team race: St. Helens and Sherwood.

“I saw Sherwood at camp. They’re tall; they usually are. They’re a good team.

I’d say it’s between Sherwood and St. Helens,” Ray said.

Ray said Parkrose should rebound from a sub-par 2012 campaign.

“They were down a little bit,” Ray said.

He’ll get a better idea of which teams could be powerful when the conference gathers for its preseason jamboree on Sept. 5. Until then, the Lions will worry only about making sure they attain their goal of a league title.

“These guys are really strong. Every position is covered. They have confidence, unlike other years. They know they can play with the best teams in the state, which is good, because they saw some good teams at camp,” Ray said.

SHHS CroSS Coun try Expectations are high for boys and girls after good season and offseason

A

fter putting forth the best finish in a decade by a St. Helens High School girls cross country team last year, the Lions look to improve in 2013. St. Helens has five of its top seven runners back from its fourth-place finish last season. From the looks of it, those five have worked hard all summer to make sure the Lions land one of the top three spots at the Northwest Oregon Conference Championship Meet this season.

“I think the girls team has a lot of potential. We have a lot of numbers this year: There’s a lot of us,” said senior Alyna Habel.

And they’ve been running a lot. Habel estimated the girls have averaged about six miles a day, six days a week throughout the summer.

Bryan Strang – the fourth-place finisher at last year’s district meet as a junior – has been running even more. He was the only non-senior to finish in the top eight last year, so he wants to be sure to put himself in position to win a title as a senior.

“I usually end up doing about 60 miles a week,” Strang said.

In addition to running around the county, Strang and some of his teammates went to the Steens Mountain High Altitude Running Camp over the summer. He said he learned quite a bit at the camp, along with running at the higher altitude.

“I think for me, what I got most out of it is that it’s more mental training,” Strang said. Several big names in running were on hand to instruct the high school athletes on some of the more intricate points of running.

“They came and talked to us about how to be a better team, how to run better, what to tell yourI THINK THE GIRLS TEAM self before a race, and how to prepare yourself.

Aside from the Steens trip, several of the runners participated in the Portland to Coast Relay recently. For the entirety of the 18-hour run, the Lions maintained a pace of just over eight minutes per mile.

Similar to the Steens camp, however, running is only a portion of the takeaway. Whereas Steens teaches how to prepare mentally, Portland to Coast allows the team to really come together.

“It’s a really good team-bonding experience. We’ve done it so long, it’s cool to do it together and to have the opportunity to grow as a team,” Habel said.

The next phase in the team’s growth will be climbing higher in the NWOC standings.

Conference breakdown St. Helens coach Gerry Tinkle is excited about his girls team’s chances of landing among the top three teams in the Northwest Oregon Conference. In addition to having five returners out of his top seven runners, newcomers Angela Willson and Josi Hanna have pushed last year’s varsity runners in practice.

“The girls made a huge jump last year. Fourth in the district meet, that’s the best we’ve done in about a decade. And I think we can do better this year. Sherwood and Wilsonville are always tough, but I think we can challenge them this year,” Tinkle said.

The boys side of things remains more of a mystery. Wilsonville dominated the league last year, but lost five of its top seven runners. On the other hand, Wilsonville dominated the JV meet.

“The boys is just a huge question mark. I just won’t know until we get two or three meets in and we’ll see how fast those young guys come up,” Tinkle said.

Coach speak: Gerry Tinkle 31st year Tinkle on improvement of girls team: What I’m looking forward to this year is the huge improvement in the girls. We’ve been down for so long. Since we went into the Three Rivers League we’ve just been taking it. Last year was a good step in the right direction. I’m kinda excited to see what happens there.

Tinkle on girls’ potential: We’re pretty solid in the girls. We might have a really, really good girls team. It just depends on how hard they want to work and how well they come together. We have five of our top seven back (Cynthia Fenrich, Alyna Habel, Stephanie Pfau, Jamie Bradford and Johanna Parkhurst).

Tinkle on boys’ potential: Bryan Strang, Casey Cooke, Tanner Boyle and Fuller Worman all have varsity experience. Tanner Matlock ended up really well at the district JV meet last year and he’s been running really well with us. And then we don’t know. We’ve got a couple sophomore twins that looked pretty good this summer – Miles and Jarrett Boynton. They’re tennis players, not track athletes, but they’ve done really well so far. A couple of freshmen – Brendan Fugere and Richard Sass – they’ve looked pretty good. So we don’t know what we’ve got in the boys – strong up front and then we’ll see how things sort themselves out.

I still think we could be up there in the upper part of the league, both boys and girls.

SHHS GirLS SoCCer Lions heavy on offense and defense in their quest to reach the playoffs

T

he two top goal-scorers from the 2012 St. Helens Lions girls soccer team are back in 2013, and the Lions are ready to build on their success from a season ago.

Last year’s team finished 7-6-2 for the team’s highest win total since 2007. While the team lost a half-dozen starters to graduation, now-sophomores Ashley Giesbers and Genesis Hansen are back to lead the offense once again. Giesbers lit up the nets as a freshman, scoring 21 goals. Hansen had five. The two of them now have a season of club soccer under their belts as well, which should bode well for the team. They are two of six St. Helens players who have found a home on a Portland-based club team.

“They are way more confident,” said senior captain Stevie Strawn. “You can tell that’s made a big difference in the way they play – Ashley and Genesis, really a lot because they played on the teams last year. They just have so much more confidence with the ball. It’s nice.”

The club experience should certainly pay dividends for St. Helens, as should last season. While the Lions had six senior starters, they also had a lot of freshmen see meaningful minutes. Those freshmen should be even better as sophomores.

“We’re heavy on goal-scorers, we’re heavy on defenders. It’s that midfield area we’ve got to sort out,” Date said.

Sophomore Athena Duggan will take over for four-year starter Dana Sukau at goalkeeper.

With that projected lineup, this team once to make sure it takes another step forward this year.

“My goal is to do better than last year, to make it to the second round in the playoffs because we made it to the play-in game (last year). So my goal is to pretty much keep getting better every year,” Strawn said.

Conference breakdown Despite having a first-year head coach, the Sherwood Bowmen figure to be the Northwest Oregon Conference favorites. The reigning champion Wilsonville squad will be no slouch either.

“It’s probably gonna be Wilsonville and Sherwood,” said St. Helens coach Simon Date.

Milwaukie should be improved from a season ago.

After a fifth-place finish in 2012, the Lions will try clawing their way into the upper half of the league. All of St. Helens’ wins last year came against the teams that finished behind the Lions in the standings. This year the Lions are aiming to take down at least one of the top four finishers from 2012.

Coach speak: Simon Date, 2nd year Date on changes from 2012: This year we’re playing some people out of what would be their assumed position.

For example, Gabby Hora is going to be playing in the center of our midfield because that’s where we lost probably our two biggest assets – Brie (Maye) and Regan (Duarte). We have to replace them physically. We’ve got Lydia (Reardon) in there, who can do a great job.

Gabby’s a defender normally.

Last year we played to our strengths, which was kicking it up top and letting Ashley Giesbers) and Genesis (Hanson) (A run up to it. This year we’re going to do things a little differently. We have to adapt to the personnel that we have. I think the way that we’re playing now is better. I don’t know how it’s going to translate to results, but I would be looking to match or maybe improve (from last season’s record).

Genesis Hansen was named a team captain as a sophomore.

Date on building off last year’s success: We set the bar pretty (darn) high last year and now the pressure’s on. It’s on me, it’s on the team. And we talked about that. Last year we snuck up on seven teams. They were like, ‘What the (heck)? These girls from St. Helens are supposed to be terrible,’ and they found out we weren’t. We’re not gonna surprise people this year.

Date on team’s goal: The goal hasn’t changed. We want to make playoffs – not play-in. Play-in was no good. The play-in last year was a bummer. It was exciting for everybody, but it’s still, ‘You’re knocked out. You’re out.’

Date on sophomore-heavy lineup (5-6 sophomores are expected to start): We’ve got six girls now that are playing club soccer for the first time. It won’t affect them this year – they don’t start until January – but that’s a huge testament to our sophomores. They have it going.

SHHS BOYS SOCCER Young team will look to flourish under guidance of a new coach

G

rowth is a word being used a lot around the St. Helens High School boys soccer program this season. The varsity team has four seniors on the roster – Andreas Rahbek, Mynor Sanchez, Paul Lobaugh and Logen McCray – as well as a new head coach. The coach, Oscar Monteblanco, inherits a varsity squad with seven upperclassmen, eight sophomores and a freshman. So far, he’s adapting nicely to the change of scenery from his last position – a three-year stint as head coach at Warner Pacific College.

“I think it’s definitely been a great transition,” said junior Justin Pense. “He’s a lot more technically sound than our last coach was. He’s definitely a lot more calm with our growing. We definitely need a lot more growing because we have a real young team.”

The underclassmen have had a positive showing throughout the summer and into camp. But both Pense and Monteblanco agree that some of the players could have used a stronger foundation of soccer skills.

One of the things the coach is going to make a push for is to get his players involved in club soccer.

“That’s what you’re seeing with a lot of these kids: Soccer season ends, they play basketball, then something else and they don’t touch a soccer ball until August. Skills don’t develop that way,” Monteblanco said.

Pense said that so far under the new coach’s tutelage the team is picking things up quickly.

“Our ability to take in information and listen to him and definitely work on our skills that we need to improve on and what he addresses in practice,” Pense said when asked what he thought was one of the highlights of daily doubles. “We’ve definitely improved a lot.”

With a team as young as this, there will be plenty of room to improve. And as long as they keep following instruction from their coach, they should continue to see the results getting better on the field.

Monteblanco on team’s strengths: Justin Pense, Paul Lobaugh, Victor Omboke and Gunter Roehrig) and I like my defense (J what they’ve been doing lately in regards to just playing the ball quickly. The speed of the game, they need to be aware of it. They go against club players in which they’re moving the ball constantly and quickly and they’re going to be under a lot of pressure. You don’t get that second and third touch sometimes. Sometimes you have got to play that one touch. I’m working with them in regards to moving the ball quickly by taking less touches, quality touches. And changing the point of attack quickly and finding the weakside.

Liberty, Wilsonville and Sherwood were the three teams brought up repeatedly when talking about the teams to beat in the Northwest Oregon Conference this season.

St. Helens junior Justin Pense described them as the three biggest threats in the conference. SHHS coach Oscar Monteblanco said schools like that will consistently have quality teams because their players spend the entire year playing soccer with their various club teams.

“The majority of their varsity players are year-round players. They all belong to a club,” Monteblanco said.

While that hasn’t become the norm here in St. Helens, Monteblanco is encouraging his players to find clubs to play for. At the same time, the coach – who has extensive experience coaching club teams and college teams – is happy to be coaching at a high school.

“High school is one of my favorite things. I like this level of soccer. I like that they’re competing for a position. There’s not a lot of club politics here.

I like that these kids are representing their school, their community,” Monteblanco said.

So far Monteblanco is getting back to the basics with the Lions to help St. Helens improve on last season’s two-win season.

“Mainly we’re just expecting to get the basics down: Faster-paced passes, looking up when we pass, and winning those 50-50 balls in the air,” Pense said.

Monteblanco on team’s weaknesses A lot of youth. This is one of those things – I have worked in small communities like St. Helens before. There’s not a lot of resources when it comes to competitive soccer. A lot of the program here is rec. The competitive level doesn’t go that high to begin with. Most of these kids don’t play soccer all year round like the teams we go against – the Libertys, Wilsonvilles, Sherwoods. What I noticed right away was they’re very young and technically the team didn’t have a lot of structure. I figure it’ll be a year in which I hope I can make a difference, teach them a few things.

Monteblanco on team’s desire to improve: They have been very enthusiastic about it. They certainly want to do well. I appreciate that from the guys. I don’t know how much has to do with experience from last few years. I think I’ve been able to make an initial good connection with them. For me it’s going back to my roots because of the fact that many of these kids haven’t had the technical training they should at this point.

t’s hard to walk around the St. Helens High School grounds without seeing some sort of contribution from the St. Helens Sports Boosters. There’s the grandstands, the weight room, the outdoor concession stand and the championship banners in the gym, to name a few. The scoreboards in the gym, at the baseball and softball fields, and at the football field were also paid for in part by the Booster Club.

These are just some of the contributions of the club. Perhaps the most noticeable upgrade is something that’s no longer there: The crown in the football field.

It cost nearly $50,000 to remove the crown to create a flatter surface for the football and soccer teams.

In addition to providing financial means for these undertakings, the club offers up a lot of volunteer time. The Boosters put $80,000 toward the new weight room at SHHS, but also incredibly valuable were the man hours former Booster President Ric h B ailey put in as the contractor in charge of the project.

The club is currently raising money to completely renovate the tennis courts at the high school.

Aside from the physical improvements done at the school, the Boosters also strive to recognize individual student-athletes. They do this by honoring athletes of the month with a free breakfast during their weekly meetings at the Kozy Korner. The Boosters also put on the sports desserts at the end of each sports season.

The Boosters’ biggest fundraiser each year is the Lite Up the Nite auction and dance in the spring. The organization also serves up food, sells towels, and offers sleeping space and showers to Hood to Coast participants. On a smaller scale, the club raises money by selling concessions and through its membership dues.

Anyone interested in learning more about the St. Helens Sports Boosters is encouraged to drop by one of the weekly meetings, held every Friday that school is in session at 7 a.m. at the Kozy Korner. Information is also available online at sthelensboosters.com.

een to the Pow Wow either of the last two years? Enjoyed Taste of Columbia County? Have you had your fish weighed at the Salmon Derby? If you answered yes to any of those, you’ve directly affected the sports programs at Scappoose High School in a positive way.

Those are the three main fundraisers put on by the Scappoose Boosters. Those three events – along with running the concession stand at football games – have allowed the Boosters to contribute nearly a half-million dollars over the last decade to SHS. Among the larger projects funded in part by the Boosters are resurfacing the track at the high school, paying for the new scoreboards in the gym and the high school’s reader board. Each season, the club also provides uniforms and equipment for the programs based on requests made by the coaches. Last year, for example, the Boosters provided new yardage markers and first-down markers for the football team.

Direct program support has been a key tenet for the club, but it’s now splitting priority with a more long-term project. Scappoose Boosters are developing an endowment fund. Booster President Nick Teeter says once that fund reaches $200,000, it will kick out about $20,000 annually in interest. Right now the Boosters are about a quarter of the way to that figure.

“That’s about our budget now. That fund will do everything we do,” Teeter said. “Right now we’re balancing the endowment and program support.”

He said donations from Nancy Hudson and the Kessi family were key to getting the endowment fund started. The fund is also aided by employer match contributions. If a person donates cash or community service hours to the club, their employer will make a donation directly to the club. With a small membership – Teeter estimates 1012 people attend their monthly meetings – those donations from employers are a big boost.

The club meets the second Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the conference rooms across from the auditorium at Scappoose High School. People interested in getting involved with the Boosters are encouraged to attend. To learn more about the Boosters, visit www.scappooseboosters.org.

SHS FooTball Tribe hopes potent offense can power team to second straight league title

Q

uarterback and running back are not a question mark for the Scappoose football team this season, as the Indians may have the top returning duo at those two positions in all of 4A. Senior quarterback Taylor Loss is coming off a monumental season as a first-year starter, in which he threw for more than 2,500 yards and racked up 37 touchdowns. He also ran for four TDs. Loss put up those numbers despite being the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart entering the season. That changed in the first half of the first game of the season, and Loss never looked back. Now he expects to build off that success this season.

“I worked pretty hard over the summertime. I had to just focus more on the plays, spread the ball out a little bit more, make sure that everyone gets to touch it so maybe (that success) will duplicate, if I just spread the ball out,” Loss said.

He has a couple of big, speedy targets at wideout this year. Seniors Justice Oman and Nick Rust were both members of Scappoose’s 4A runner-up 4x400 relay team in the spring, and Oman finished second individually in the 400-meter dash. Those two have shown the ability to stretch defenses and could turn into a danWE HAVE A FEW YOUNG gerous combination.

Senior Kenny Klippel returns to anchor the line after earning second-team All-League a season ago.

Klippel is a two-way threat who can pancake defensive linemen while he’s on offense as well as disrupt the backfield when he’s playing defense.

Junior Devin Ray will be back on the D-line after an All-League campaign.

Those two help make up a strong defensive line, but the Tribe’s group of linebackers may be its biggest asset on that side of the ball. Scappoose returns All-League linebacker Blake Wills and three-year starter Lionel Sandoval. Junior Robby Backus looks prepared to round out the linebacking corps.

“We have a few young guys and they just need to step up and play their role.

I think we’ll be pretty good; the young guys are really talented,” Sandoval said. He added that Joey Krupsky has looked good in his spot at safety as well.

That strength on both sides of the ball has Scappoose eying a second straight Cowapa League title. Even though the Indians have a bull’s eye on their back after winning the league last year, Sandoval said that won’t bother this team.

“Added pressure? I don’t think so,” he said when asked if defending the title would present an extra challenge. “It’s just kinda, we’re gonna come out, do our thing, try to take it again.”

1st game takeaways In his second season at the controls of Scappoose’s uptempo, spread offense, quarterback Taylor Loss looks even more comfortable than he did last year when he was a first-team All-League QB. That spells trouble for the rest of the Cowapa League.

Against Roosevelt, Loss did a good job of getting the ball out wide quickly as the Indians spread the field horizontally.

Senior receiver Justice Oman looks even faster than he was last year, when he was runner-up at the 4A state track meet in the 400 meters. He could be a gamebreaker for the Tribe.

Senior running back Carson Davison ran the ball tough between the tackles and has the speed to bounce it outside.

In the past, the Indians have struggled against mobile quarterbacks. Roosevelt’s QB presented challenges at times, but Scappoose’s D did an excellent job with its pursuit angles and swarming to the ball to keep him in check.

Coach speak: Sean McNabb, 15th year McNabb on development of QB Taylor Loss: I feel like we’re farther ahead (this year than last) because we have some experience back. We’re able to be ahead of the game. Typically we wouldn’t have this much stuff in going into the first game of the season. A lot of times we’ve had one-year starters – Torin Huff, Cody Stutzer. It definitely allows us to do a little more.

McNabb on key newcomers: I’m really impressed with Joey Krupsky. He’s starting at free safety for us. Jake Ford is stepping up. He was a JV kid last year. Right now we have him starting at cornerback. Taylor Heaton and “Moose� [Bryan] McFeron, they play offensive line, defensive line. They didn’t get many varsity snaps last year – they’re gonna be in the mix. Matt Bennett, a sophomore center. That’s a tough position to play.

Keenan Stevens is another sophomore who will see some action up front. Braden Clark, another sophomore, is in the mix at running back. He’s been doing some good things.

It’s hard to say with Y-C.

Conference breakdown Since the turn of the millennium, the Cowapa League has belonged to three teams: Astoria, Banks and, of course, Scappoose. Through the latter half of the aughts, however, Scappoose’s spot atop the mountain slipped away.

The Indians brought the Cowapa League crown back to Scappoose with an emphatic 57-6 win over the Astoria Fishermen last season. It was Scappoose’s first Cowapa League championship since 2005.

This year the road to the title looks to once again wind through those three schools.

Scappoose coach Sean McNabb said Astoria looks to be a little young this year, but he expects Fishermen coach Howard Rub to have them ready once the league season rolls around.

Banks seems to regularly come up with hard-nosed athletes at key positions.

And with a new coach last season, Seaside is looking to force its way back into the fold.

Scappoose looks to have the pieces in place to make it two straight league titles.

At the completion of daily doubles, All-League quarterback Taylor Loss appeared confident in his squad’s ability to repeat.

“I think we’ll be pretty solid. I think we can do it again,” Loss said.

SHS VOLLEYBALL Indians focusing on defense and accurate hitting this season

D

efense and accurate hitting will be of the utmost importance for the Scappoose High School volleyball team this year. The Tribe lacks height, but Scappoose is confident it will find ways to overcome this shortcoming.

“We’re not the largest team so we’re working on defense. A lot on defense and placement with the ball – not killing it every time,” said setter Brittany Catlow.

Catlow is one of six seniors on the squad along with Samantha Hendrickson, Hailee Holmason, Nikki Andreotti, Morgan MacInnis and Abby Kessi. Sophomore Hannah Carey and freshman Alyssa Spang round out the varsity roster.

So far, there seems to be a lot of camaraderie among this group. The seniors, in particular, know one another’s tendencies very well.

“We’ve been playing together for a long time and all six of us are really good friends off the court, so we have a good bond together. So that will help,” Catlow said.

That ability to communicate frankly with one another will be key.

“If we get mad at each other, we’ll just shake it off. We can tell each other things and they won’t WE’VE BEEN PLAYING take it offensively,” said Andreotti.

And, like Catlow said, defense – Brittany Catlow will be a big focus throughout the Senior setter year. If the defense can get the ball to Catlow in the right spot, she will be able to set the hitters up for success.

Andreotti said the team must put a big emphasis on “getting our passes to our setter where we need to and having our hitters not try to just hit the ball as hard as they can. Just placing it where it needs to be.”

By taking care of those details, this team is confident it can return to the state playoffs this season.

“I definitely think we can get top two or top three in the league,” Kessi said.

Conference breakdown Two of the top three 4A teams in Oregon last year came out of the Cowapa League. Astoria took second in the state while Banks ended up third. Any discussion of favorites for the Cowapa League championship has to start with one of those two teams.

Scappoose played tough against those teams last year en route to the first round of the state playoffs. That should give the team added confidence for the upcoming campaign. The dropoff after Astoria and Banks isn’t too large though.

“In the past it’s been a strong league,” said SHS coach Mark Sprenger.

Alyssa Spang will be counted on to contribute as a freshman.

SHS CROSS COUN TRY Indians should be in the mix for team and individual state championships

A

s seems to be the case every fall, the Scappoose Indians cross country teams are setting their sights on Cowapa League championships.For both teams, such lofty aspirations are certainly within the realm of possibility. The boys return just about everyone from their 2012 team, which finished fifth at the state championship meet.

“I feel that we have a pretty good chance at state this year, actually. We lost one runner, Colby Wedgworth. A lot of the other teams lost a lot of their good seniors, like Siuslaw. That puts us up there,” said senior Hunter Hoyt, the runner-up at last year’s Cowapa League Championship Meet.

He plans on doing better this season.

“I want to win districts and place top-10 at state,” he said.

“Nothing’s guaranteed. It’s not like ‘OK, I’ve given up soccer, I’m just gonna go down there and win.’ But I think it certainly enhances her chances considerably. And then throw that with the natural talent she has. She’s gonna be a tough one to beat,” Harley said.

Behind Davidson is fellow senior Lindsey Marquardt and then a host of runners who don’t have much varsity experience. But that doesn’t have the team lacking confidence.

“We’re gonna win. We’re gonna win districts because we have every year and we’re not going to break that. I don’t know how we’re gonna do at state, but we’re gonna make it to state and we’ll just see,” said Marquardt. “Me and Charlie are the only ones back from varsity, so it’s kind of a rebuilding year, but that can be good.”

It’s not a matter of rebuilding for the boys, it’s just a matter of returning to state.

Even a slight improvement to fourth place will grab the team a trophy. But with the firepower they have, a blue trophy is what they’re really after.

“Our varsity team is really solid,” said senior Jim Cutrona.

Conference breakdown Scappoose has won both the boys and girls Cowapa League Championship Meet each of the last two years. This year, the goal for both teams is to do the same.

For the boys, it looks like a very good possibility – perhaps even a probability. Repeating will be more of a challenge for the girls, who lost five of their top seven runners.

Scappoose coach David Harley said Tillamook’s girls should be much improved. YamhillCarlton will try to build off a good season last year, and an increase in numbers could help Seaside’s chances.

“It should be wide open in the girls,” Harley said.

For the boys, Tillamook looks to have the best chance to challenge Scappoose for a title.

Despite being one of only two returning varsity runners, senior Lindsey Marquardt is confident the girls will win a league title in 2013.

After losing just one runner from last year’s team, the boys at Scappoose are a close-knit, fun-loving group.

Coach speak: David Harley, 17th year Harley on girls rebuilding: I think the girls understand that they lost a lot of girls and it’s kind of a transition year for them, but Lindsey (Marquardt) is really focused on leading the team – her and Charlie (Davidson) – to defend the district championship and get to state, get a lot of girls experience and go from there. And Charlie has an individual goal, obviously, of winning the whole thing. I mean, what more could a coach want than to have a team goal and individual goals?

Harley on which girls could move up to varsity: You start with Caley Ricker and Macy Gray, who were some of our better JV runners. Just based on experience and understanding what needs to be done. Then you throw in Lindsey’s little sister, Emily. She’s been running well in practice. She ran Hood to Coast, did a nice job there. I think those are probably your first five you look at, then after that you’ve got some newer kids that we don’t know what they have yet.

Harley on boys’ high expectations: It’s pretty clear this is the year for them to go down there and hopefully improve on last year and get a trophy. These next couple years is kind of their window. It’s still a young team, not a lot of seniors.

Some guys are juniors now. They’re a year older, a year stronger.

Harley on what excites him most this season: The big thing is just to see some of these new faces.

We’ve really lost a lot of girls and we have a huge number of new ones. You take them and you take some newer guys who are trying cross country for the first time – like Ethan Marcantonio – I think it’s gonna be fun to watch them enjoy the experience of learning about a sport they know nothing about.

And watching, hopefully, have us be successful with some big things.

SHS GIRLS SOCCER Quest for a state title is fueled by last season’s semifinal loss

F

or the second time in the last three years, Scappoose’s season came to an end in the state semifinals last year. The team hasn’t yet rinsed the sour taste of that defeat away.

“I have nightmares about that game,” said sophomore Eleanor Jones.

Throughout fall camp, the team has pushed itself harder than before to assure that when this season ends, there will be a sweeter taste in their mouths.

“We’re getting pushed a lot harder than last year and everybody likes it more than last year, so it’s a really good combination. I think it’s going to be a good year,” Jones said.

Part of the change has been a new coaching style. After five years at the helm, Chris Dorough left the Scappoose job to take over the program at Catlin Gabel, where he attended high school.

Taking over for him is Nick Heffernan. The transition to Heffernan’s increased focus on fitness has gone pretty smoothly.

“No one was expecting to work this hard. We were all nervous. Whenever you have a new coach, it’s like ‘What’s he gonna be like?’ We all like his playing style. We all like the no-boot, pass to feet. We all like that and we’ve taken to it pretty well,” said senior Alix IT’S LIKE HOW MICHAEL Raya.

“This is our year. Period. Nick has made it that way. There’s no option,” – Eleanor Jones Raya said. “We are going to be state Sophomore forward champions and that is how we have to believe, and that is how we are practicing every single day: We are going to be state champions. We are working harder than every single team in the state, every single day. That’s just how we have to be.”

That mentality has the team confident it can replace the top-notch production it lost from last season’s team – notably Ariel Viera, now playing at the University of Portland, and Charlie Davidson, who is focusing strictly on cross country this fall.

In addition to Raya and Jones, this year’s squad still brings back plenty of experience. Sophomores Natalie Muth, Lucy Davidson, Lauren Frank and Isabel Jory were all key members of last year’s team. Junior Emily Muth has been a twoyear starter on defense. Senior Lexi Courtney will be a scoring threat again.

That core group has embraced the idea of taking no days off.

“It’s like how Michael Jordan would lift on the day of his games; we have to be that team,” Jones said. “We can rest after the season.”

Conference breakdown Astoria and Seaside have continued to improve their girls soccer programs, but the Cowapa League has clearly belonged to Scappoose each of the last three seasons.

The Indians have never lost a Cowapa League soccer game. In the girls soccer league’s three years of existence, Scappoose has outscored opponents 213-7.

Despite that, the Indians aren’t taking their opponents lightly.

“We can’t underestimate league,” said senior goalkeeper Alix Raya.

Heffernan on team’s depth: We’re strong. What I like about them, we’ve got depth. If I have to pull out a midfielder, I’ve got someone just as good to fill their cleats. We’ve got a strong, strong squad. Usually with soccer you might have a strong defense, an OK midfield and a strong attack. But we’ve got strong D, strong mid, strong attack and strong goalkeeper.

Heffernan on what he’ll do differently from predecessor Chris Dorough: Chris did a great job with the program and he’s got the girls where they need to be. Every coach has a different philosophy and a different way of doing things. I think, being English, with me it’s ‘Keep the ball, keep passing, don’t panic.’ You see it a lot with girls soccer: They take a touch, then boot it down the field. You see that constantly. But with me, it’s pass, pass, pass. If I’m this close to the goal, I don’t want to boot it – I just pass it to my goalkeeper.

Them two together, they can just run it.

We’ve got strength.

They’ve got goals to make up. The girls that were in the shadows last year from Charlie (Davidson) and Ariel (Viera), they’ve got to step up. I’ve been through that. If a forward left, I’m a midfielder, I’ve got to step in.

SHS BOyS SOCCer Offense returns largely in tact ready to move up in the standings

I

n head coach Scott Stanton’s first season, the focus was on maintaining possession of the ball. That led to a more competitive team, but the wins didn’t necessarily pile up.

That’s looking to change in his second season at the helm of the Scappoose High School boys soccer team.

The focus has shifted somewhat and the Indians are building on that fundamental base installed last year.

“It seems like we’re working harder than we did last year. It definitely sucks a lot more, I can say that. Everything is a lot harder,” said junior Asa Flanagan. “I think we’re looking better as a team, in general. Our chemistry is getting better. I think it’s going to be good this year.”

The team lost about a third of its starting lineup from a season ago, so there are a few holes to plug in. Another concern is that one of the team’s starting defenders – David Bradley – broke his collarbone over the summer. Initially it was thought he’d be able to return about the time the season started, but then he rebroke his collarbone a week before tryouts started.

“It’d be nice if he came back before the season ends, but it’s hard to say,” said Stanton.

For the players who have been physically well enough to practice, they usually leave practice feeling physically exhausted. Flanagan said the added level of difficulty at practices is paying off though.

“I think that our mental toughness is getting better,” he said.

The new strategy on the offensive side of the ball coupled with the more challenging practices have the team believing big things are ahead. After all, the Indians played the league champions and runners-up close last year, so why not expect to be among the top squads this year?

According to Flanagan, finding a way to do so isn’t very difficult.

“I think it’s a legitimate goal we can be league champs. I honestly do. We competed with every team really good last year, it’s just whenever we lost our focus we lost the game. So if we can just keep our focus, which I think we can, we will win those games,” Flanagan said.

Conference breakdown Put simply, Scappoose has no intentions of finishing in the bottom half of the league this year.

“We’re gonna do a lot better than last year, definitely,” said Scappoose coach Scott Stanton. Astoria and Seaside still appear to be the two toughest teams in the league.

Then it’s a three-team cluster of Banks, Tillamook and Scappoose. The Indians are looking to move from the bottom of that cluster to the top, if not higher.

Junior Trevor Smith is one of Scappoose’s experienced forwards back in the starting lineup this season.

Sophomore Coltin Willard and junior Devin Timmons have been practicing harder this year than last in an effort to improve on Scappoose’s fifth-place finish last season.

2012 Standings

Coach speak: Scott Stanton, 2nd year Stanton on improvements made since 2012: We had talked a lot about possession at the beginning of the season last year: String together some passes, combine some passes and just kind of keep the ball. Now they all get that. And with JV, (coach Ryan) Poster was talking about even his team this year can possess it really well. It’s kind of nice now that we’ve got that foundation, that this is how we like to play, this is how we want to play. They all get it. Now we don’t have to work on that so much. It’s just sort of fine-tuning different aspects, like being able to keep the ball and switch it from side to side, find out where a hole is or a weakness is and get it through.

Stanton on team’s growth since 2012: We’re gonna do a lot better than last year, definitely. Last year is one of those where the results weren’t there, but if you watched the game, we had the upper hand a lot. Our biggest problem was we were small. We were all sophomores.

This year they’ve all grown. They got taller, they’ve matured, put on more mass.

Last year we could possess the ball, work it all around, then get it in front of the goal and a defender would swat him away like a fly. This year I think we’ll be able to hold our ground better.

Stanton on team’s experienced forwards: We’ve got Devin Timmons, Asa Flanagan and Trevor Smith. The three of them were pretty key parts of the attack last year. Same with Jesus (Martinez). Those are sort of our four attackers.

Stanton on Cowapa League: Astoria and Seaside are still the two teams in the league to beat. The nice thing is last year we had two really close games with Astoria, who wound up winning the league.

Coach Scott Stanton expects Kevin Bachman to contribute as a freshman on varsity.

Stanton on newcomers expected to contribute: Ian Donaldson is taking over the left back spot. He played up some last year; he’s had a little bit of experience at varsity. Our new key guy is a freshman, Kevin Bachman. He’s a kid I’ve coached the last two years year-round. Devon Linville just moved up from Medford. He’s pretty solid. He’s a relative of Ellie Mullen (a former SHS soccer player now playing at College of St. Benedict in Minnesota). Coltin Willard has a phenomenal work ethic and a desire to get better every day. He’s constantly pushing himself.
