nighthawks football kicks into high gear

Nighthawk football kicked off Tuesday August 27th at Grant County, but the season began weeks before as the team regrouped from last season to begin another chapter of Hettinger-Scranton football.

Head coach Randy Burwick is in his 12th season and he couldn’t be happier with what he saw in his team during the preseason. “They’ve been doing the work in practice,” said Burwick. “I’m real proud.”

Burwick has a total of 35 athletes out for his squad this year, eight of them being returning

seniors. With a good amount of senior presence on the field, experience is what is going to make them a better team. “A lot of them I threw in the fire as freshman,” said Burwick, referring to varsity experience he gave them as underclassmen.

The loss of four seniors last year included Tight End Steven Kristy, a four year starter who received All-Region recognition.

Coach Burwick described his preseason routines as pretty similar to ones he has ran in the past. Overall though, the general mood is not so similar.

“Our intensity level and focus level is greater than it has been

in the past,” said Burwick.

“Our conference is good, so it takes that to compete.”

Burwick knows there is always something a team can work on, and he can rely on his eight seniors for experience, but he has some younger athletes that are going to require gaining some familiarity for his team to succeed. “Just getting the young kids some game time,” said Burwick. “There’s youth in the backfield, so we’re making sure they’re ready to play varsity football.” He praised their work ethic but also needs them to understand that moving up a level, the pace changes. “They’re some

good sophomores,” said Burwick. “But they need that experience with the game speed.”

The head coach added that on the offensive side of the ball he just needs to get his team good reps.

The coach also spoke about his freshman that came out this season. He sees that they have great work ethic. “I’ve been most impressed with their work ethic and their toughness,” said Burwick. “They’re not worried about who their up against in practice, and they never hang their heads.”

After starting last season with two straight wins, the Nighthawks faltered to a 2-7 record. Experience can help with that, “we have our core back,” said the head coach.

“We need to make sure to keep our level of consistency throughout the game, that’s go-

ing to be huge for us,” said Burwick. “We have to go out and play physically and mentally for 45 minutes.”

Consistent play starts with accountability, and that is something that coach Burwick started from the beginning when it came time to open camp. “We bring everyone to camp, and you’ve got to earn your spot.” “We need to keep mistakes at a minimum and play disciplined,” said Burwick.

Burwick also knows success comes when you play to your strong suits, something that he focused on during camp with his players. “We’ve been moving kids around, trying to learn their strengths,” said Burwick.

The head coach just wants to see his team give a great effort.

“We can’t have any regrets when it’s done.”

nighthawks make first strides with cross country team

Starting something from scratch is always an arduous task, and building an athletic program from the ground up is no exception. That is what first year head coach Rick Jones intends to do this year as the Hettinger-Scranton Nighthawks open its inaugural Cross Country season.

Jones, also a first year teacher to the area, knows he has a daunting task in front of him.

“The first meet is going to be

the ninth of September,” said Jones, who also spoke strongly about the preseason. “It’s going well, the kids have interest.

It’s helping the kids find another niche with in the school system. They are excited to be a part of the beginning.”

Right now Jones’ team of five runners is just working on building a base, and getting some familiarity. Given that this is their first year, he (Jones) wants them to really understand competitive running. As the season moves on he intends to change up

the routine. “It’s time to start working on personal records from week to week,” said Jones. “We’ll step up the game a little bit.”

Before the preseason the most important part about starting a new program is recruiting. When asked how he went about getting his team together Jones said most of it happened before he moved up to the area. He said that the athletic department started to gauge interest and it started to pick up steam. Jones said he has also has the luxury of

athletes from other activities participating, and using the endurance training to benefit themselves in other athletic areas. “Word of mouth, and at this point we’re always recruiting,” said Jones.

As the preseason dwindles and the regular season starts to get closer, Jones can already spot a strength in his young team. “Desire,” said Jones.

“They’re not doing it because it’s something to do. Something in them wants to go out and make this thing successful.” That is something that the

head coach is excited to see.

He knows his team will need it facing their biggest challenge, interest.

“Growing interest in the program, and knowing where to start with them because it’s so new,” said Jones.

“Challenges I look forward to!”

When the first season is all said and done with, coach Rick Jones really just wants the benefits to rest on the runners. “I want the athletes to feel like they accomplished something,” said Jones. “I want them to get them to see a difference, from start to the end.”

NIGHTHAWKS VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS HOPE TO FORGET LAST YEAR’S EARLY EXIT

Nighthawks Volleyball is underway, and sixth year head coach Jonathan Kohler is ready for another season. Despite how last year ended, Jon is optimistic the leadership his team has can carry them to the next level.

Last year did not end well, according to Kohler. “Last season was very disappointing,” said Kohler. “I didn’t feel we played up to our potential.”

With the talent his team had, and the fact that the district tournament was where the Nighthawks call home, they

hoped to make a splash. “We didn’t even make it to regionals, and districts were on our home court,” said Kohler.

The Nighthawks volleyball squad lost three seniors from last year, including reigning District Senior Athlete, Becca Oase. He is hoping that the senior class of seven this year can pick up right where they left off.

When asked how the preseason was going, Kohler replied, “very well, especially with five returning starters,” said Kohler. “I’m happy with the progress.” The routine, according to Kohler, has been “pretty similar to years past,” though he has tweaked it a

little. “It’s a pretty rigorous system,” said Kohler. “We put more ownership on the athletes, and they’ve really stepped up.”

Right now they are just trying to get basics in, and make sure that communication is good.

As the season approaches, and they get into the heart of match ups, they will alter how they practice. “We’ll work on things we need to work on for offense,” said Kohler. “Then we’ll scheme for other teams for defense.”

Each season a team can find something from the previous year to build from. Kohler knows exactly what that is for his team. “They’re playing with a chip on their shoulder,”

said Kohler. “They were disappointed in their (district tournament) performance.” The team is also returning five starters and the head coach raved about how his team is playing as a whole unit. “As far as team chemistry, they are further ahead than even at the end of last season,” said Kohler. “It’s a whole different atmosphere.”

Along with an experienced squad, good hitting and consistent play have been a strong suit of his team so far. They’ll need to lean on that as the competition heats up this year, especially under the new postseason tournament format.

“Overall it is going to be tough competition,” said Kohler.

Kohler also spoke about possible opportunities his team could work on this year. “Level of play and concentration throughout the games,” said Kohler.

This year they’ve added nine new freshman and Kohler couldn’t be happier with them.

“They have great attitudes, they have fun when they are playing and they don’t hang their heads,” said Kohler.

At the end of the day coach Kohler just wants good effort out of his players, and wants to make sure his team gives him the most they can give. “Don’t leave anything on the court,” said Kohler. “Give everything you have.”

RETURNING PLAYERS BOOST COWBOYS SEASON CHANCES

If returning players are a good indication of how a team will perform, then look for the Killdeer Cowboys to be playing some very good football this year.

“We return most of our backfield and our receivers as well as a few good linemen,” 5th year head coach Lou Dobitz said. “We return most of our defense as well.

“We have good team speed and a good group of players with experience.”

Dobitz is also well aware of some holes in his experienced team and some areas requiring improvement.

“We graduated some very good linemen and hope to find the right guys to fill in their positions,” he said. “Passing the football will become a priority to improve upon.

“We will be trying to improve our defense each week.

“We will also be looking for kickers and punters to fill vacated positions of players who graduated from last season.

Following a 1– 3 start last season, The Cowboys won out the rest of the year until the second round of post-season play, losing to Stanley-Powers Lake to finish their season. Coach Dobitz knows what it will take to get the Cowboys even further into the playoffs this year.

“We know that we will have to be ready to play good competition each week,” Dobitz said. “If we can avoid major injuries, we would like to see if we could improve on our performance in the playoffs from last season.

Coach Dobitz is joined by assistant coaches Josh Karey, Taylor Bang and Daniel Kerr; and volunteer coaches Klay Carlson and Russ Molzahn.

Preseason points to stronger season

It’s time for football season.

The 2013 season for Bowman County is underway and fifth-year head coach Travis Hager said that he is hoping a great preseason regimen can translate into positive results during the regular season.

Hager said there weren’t any structural changes from previous preseason routines, but variations to drills.

Instead of two-a-day practices, the Bulldogs kept it to three-hour sessions during the preseason.

Now that the season has begun, Hager and his staff won’t keep the athletes over two hours.

“If we practice too long, then we’re not being efficient,” Hager said.

The team lost three seniors in the graduating class last year with six ready to step into a leadership role. That, according to Hager, is one of the strengths of his team this year.

Overall there are 21 athletes out for the team this year and for the past couple of years the Bulldogs have had many underclassman playing at the varsity level.

Having that experience is becoming an asset in practices, as well.

“With older guys that have been through it for a few years it’s easier to get more reps in, there is more familiarity with the drills,” he said.

This allowed his team to progress faster in the preseason then in years past, Hager added.

Youth is always something that’s necessary for a team’s future, and Hager likes what he sees from his younger players.

“It gives the team a good base to train for the next few years, we have different body types with different positions,” Hager said.

Hager will mix the roster up and get some younger guys in for the junior varsity games.

“Hopefully we can build confidence at the JV level and move them up when they are ready.”

When asked what his team needed improve from last

year, Hager cited two areas: the offensive line and third down defense.

“Too many times on third down, even on third and long, they would convert,” he said.

He did say that the offensive line has looked better so far.

Confidence is another aspect Hager feels he needs to work on with his team.

“Coming off of a disappointing season last year, it’s tough building it back up,” said Hager. “But these kids have what it takes, they just need to be willing to show it on the field.”

‘HIT THE GROUND Cross country team RUNNING’ begins season run bowman bulldogs

The cross country season is starting to take shape as the school year steadily approaches.

Practice began Aug. 12 and

head coach Jonathan Jahner spoke glowingly about the prospects this upcoming season is going to offer.

Jahner, who has coached the team in some form for about ten years, says this year he lost about six ath-

letes to graduation, but two seventh graders have joined the team. He says that he sees anywhere from three to five more runners joining them as the season goes on, and at this point his total count is about 20 student athletes.

The preseason routines have been pretty stable, says Jahner. He had volunteer workouts where two days a week a group of his athletes would get together for training throughout the summer.

Between the volunteer workouts they did find a couple opportunities for some good old fashioned competition and organized two summer fun runs. It seemed as though the practices were very relaxed, and it gave the athletes a chance to be together if they didn’t want to run alone this summer. Opportunities like this can bind the group, make it more cohesive and give the athletes an opportunity outside the rigors of organized practice to get to know each other before the season begins.

As the season officially gets started Jahner said

they’ll start working on mileage runs. The distances will be between three and five miles to start the year so that his runners can build a base.

After some time off its good to have them really understand the distance, and get to know the pace so they can sustain throughout the season. As the season and practices progress coach Jahner said they’ll move into more “fine tune running” and work on what he described as “mid-distance interval work.”

Overall he thinks maybe this year’s squad is a little more prepared than some in the past.

Last year culminated with mixed results between the regional and state meets.

Jahner said that he was happy with how the season ended. When asked if there was anything that he could build off of from last year, it would be those competitions, for both the boys and girls. The girls ran great, he said, as they took 11th in state and finished in 3rd place at the regional meet. He was happy with how they ran, and considering the team is return-

ing all the scoring runners he has no doubt they can excel this season. The boys finished 4th and 8th at the regional and the state meet, respectively. What he saw as the biggest opportunity for the boys heading into this year was how his young runners performed at the state level. Coach Jahner said it gave him a good glimpse into the future of his team.

Coach Jahner also talked about the delight he has as he witnesses the sport he coaches grow throughout the state. When he started coaching approximately 150 kids participated at state.

Now, he says, that number is pushing 200. When asked if he could describe what this upcoming season looked like or felt like for him, optimism took over and he broke down with a little laughter and said he didn’t know if he could find the right words. He did say though, that part of his coaching philosophy is to be able to give the team some ownership of themselves, and give them the privilege of creating their own identity.

Volleyball season starts with new coach

Bowman County’s Volleyball team has a new leader at the helm this year. For Anne Hanson, the transition to head coach should be easy after assisting the Bulldogs the past two years. “It’s going really well, I love it,” said Hanson when asked how the experience was going so far.

Naturally, routines from year to year can have its differences, and this pre-

season was no exception.

“Quite different,” said Hanson when asked how the preseason was going. “There is a lot of competition, and they seem to be thriving on it with positive attitudes as a whole.” As the season progresses Hanson and her team will narrow the focus down during practices.

“We’ll change things to who we are playing,” said Hanson.

Overall there are 32 girls out this year, a number slightly higher from last year as

that squad sat at 28. Of those 32 there are eight in the senior class, having graduated only one from last year’s team, a big benefit according to the head coach. “All starters came back,” said Hanson.

“With only losing one person from last year, it’s going to be leadership that pushes us.”

Since most of her team is returning, Hanson feels her squad is ready to make a jump this year. “I feel we can make it to state this year, we’re very seasoned,”

said Hanson. “If we go, this would be the year to do it.”

One challenge the Bulldogs will have to work on this season is confidence.

“They struggled with confidence,” said Hanson. “They need to realize they have the talent to beat anyone.” Another obstacle they are going to have to deal with is the newly formed Super Regional tournament. “Our record is going to be much more scrutinized,” said Hanson.

When asked if she could

pin point small successes her team could build on from last season, Hanson noted her strong hitters.

“They worked on verticals and endurance,” said Hanson. She also is going to enjoy benefits from having a big freshman class this year. “I’m looking to build the program up,” said Hanson. “I’m always in communication with the junior high, and I really want to build the program as a whole.”

new england/dickinson football looks to new winning season

After graduating 21 players from last year’s team, the Dickinson Trinity football team is young and inexperienced.

Real young and real inexperienced.

However, those factors aren’t new news to first-year head coach John Odermann, who took over the reins to the Trinity football program in April.

“As a coaching staff, we Fknew ALL SPORTS PREVIEW that coming in,” Odermann said. “Right now, we are doing our best by coaching them up and getting them where they need to be… We are going take our lumps, but if we can do what we need to do and play assignment-alignment football. We can keep games close and win them in the end. We aren’t looking to blow anybody out. We want to go out there and compete.”

Nonetheless, Odermann continues to carry excitement to every practice and workout. Odermann, who was part of Trinity’s back-toback state title teams in 200001, knows there is potential and it’s just about molding the talent.

Initial nerves about being at the helm in his first game haven’t really sunk in — at least not yet. Trinity’s opens the season with Killdeer — a rival Odermann enjoyed playing during his time as a Titan.

“Maybe I’m just young and stupid that I haven’t really been nervous yet,” Odermann said with a smile. “It’s a situation where these are teams I’m familiar with. Right now, I’m having fun and the kids are having fun.

“Killdeer was one of my favorite teams to play when I was younger, because there was a long-seeded rivalry

there.”

Trinity graduated nearly every skilled position from quarterback to running back to wide receiver on offense and on the defense includes secondary to linebacker to defensive lineman.

One player who saw playing time as a junior last year was Cody Woehl, an offensive and defensive lineman.

The now senior said the team might be inexperienced right now, but are willing to learn every day.

“It’s kind of great feeling showing them what they need to do to make them better players,” Woehl said. “I feel like practices (in the early parts of the season) have gone really well for the whole team. I’ve seen a lot of good things.”

The Titans’ starting quarterback will be sophomore Willy Jahner. He is a little nervous being named the starting quarterback, but he definitely grateful to be given the opportunity.

“There are nerves, because I came from JV so I’ll be a little nervous,” Jahner said.

“I’m really excited and I mean we are young, but I think we will have a pretty good year.”

Odermann believes Jahner has the ability to be a great passer and runner. Though he’s only a sophomore, Odermann said Jahner has great instincts for the game.

“Willy is a smart kid,” Odermann said. “He’s got some good athletic skills, but he’s got a fantastic head on his shoulders. I’m really excited to see him out there leading the team.

Even though he’s a sophomore, he was nominated and elected a cap-

tain. He’s a kid the other guys look to as a leader on this team.”

The targets Jahner will have in the backfield are juniors Cole Beck, Coltyn Nelson and Mark Veverka. Beck and Nelson are vying for the starting running back spot, while Veverka will be the fullback. Last year the Titans ran the pistol formation, but will move back to the power I. At wide receivers, Trinity has juniors Jace Kruger, Joe Mayer, Easton Brost, Connor Friske and sophomore Jaret Lee. James Gordon, who has played football in a couple years, could also see time as a receiver.

Beck said the competition between him and Nelson has been great. Each running back is pushing each other to perform at a high level.

“It has been great,” Beck said. “Coltyn and I have been training a lot together and we push each other to our limit every time. It’s really fun.”

Though it’s only the early part of the season, Jahner said it has been great to see all the underclassmen grow each day as a team.

“They are a great group of guys,” Jahner said. “They are great leaders and I’ve enjoyed the season thus far. We have the potential especially later on in the season when have more game-time experience.”

“We have a lot of return players,” said Cowgirls Volleyball Coach Teresa Peterson. “I am very optimistic about the upcoming year.”

Returning for the Cowgirls this year are key players senior Jenna VanBeek, outside hitter and setter Katie Sackmann.

“Julia Blue Arm, who was the libero last year, will be playing as hitter this year and also middle hitter Marissa Lyon is returning,” said Peterson.

The Cowgirls will have a lot of experience back on the floor.

New to the libero position is junior Brady Beer.

“I am very excited to see her in our lineup,” she said.

Other underclassmen Peterson thinks will contribute to a successful year Included Megan Flatmoe, Bailie Beer and Hallie Kocer.

Peterson said,” I am looking for the Cowgirls to be very competitive this year. Our strength is our experience and we have outstanding leadership.”

She said there are a lot of numbers, which is exciting, and a lot of potential on the younger squads.

Roxanne Johnson and Kelli Penfield will assist Peterson.

“Our focus will be to learn to trust and be confident in one another,” said Peterson.

The Lemmon Cowboys have 12 runners going out for the crosscountry team this year. And while they lost no seniors to graduation, the did lose Morgan Ham, last year’s conference and region champion when she transferred to Belle Fourche.

“Many of our kids are young and/ or rookies,” said Coach Tim Pelkofer, but I think our girls will have a shot at winning the conference.”

Numbers are strong on the girls’ side, which he feels is the biggest strength going into the season, but only two boys, one sixth- and one seventh-grader went out for the team this year.

“They will be a good nucleus for rebuilding our boys program,” said Pelkofer.

Returning team members this year include several state runners, including Amber Ellison and Shaylyn Loder, who made it to state last year as eighth-graders.

a lot of talent,” said Pelkofer. “She was a state place winner in 2001.

Brady Beer (junior) and Bailie Beer (sophomore) are both twotime state qualifiers “and are both hard workers and leaders.”

Junior Devon Drayton is a promising rookie who put in a lot of miles this summer, and Taylor Drayton (eighth grade) is also a rookie this year.

“We need to get some miles in, and keep everybody healthy,” he said.

“As always, we’ll focus our training on conference, regions and state.”
