Kraft Project Play- Saltspring Tennis 2015 Kraft Project Play was a contest to help to build a better future by building better places to play. The grand prize winner received $250,000 for their recreational facility upgrades and the three secondary prize winners will each receive $25,000 towards their recreational facility upgrade. Kraft Project Play Salt Spring Tennis 2015 was an held on August 14 at Portlock Park. It was to create awareness to vote for Salspring on Aug 17/18 to win the grand prize. Community Relations coordinator Rick MacKinnon organized the event and Country Grocer participated helping out onsite. Chef Michael and some of our team members were there serving food and bringing awareness to the community.

Pre-Ribfest Event– Esquimalt The Esquimalt store had it’s annual Pre-Ribfest BBQ on Friday August 14th. The event is held each year to help the Esquimalt firefighters launch the upcoming Ribfest event on September 11-13. All money raised from our Pre-Ribfest BBQ will go to the Esquimalt Firefighters Charitable Fund.

The weather was challenging but we had a great turnout and raised $1560.00 in just 2.5 hours!!

Nutrition Corner For my last post, I wanted to end with the message that following a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean that there are going to be strict guidelines or that you need to use the word ‘diet’, it just means you have chosen to create a healthy ‘lifestyle’ for yourself.

If you eat healthy, you will feel healthy. Including a rainbow in your day, eating fresh vegetables and fruit and cutting down on sugar consumption will give you more energy and should give you many of the essential vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Eating healthy can definitely cost a bit more, Nutrition Advisor Erin Bosdet but you actually might end up eating less. Some processed and refined foods can be more affordable, but they may not have great nutritional value, which means they can leave you feeling less satisfied than if you were to consume a nutritious, well balanced meal.

Some red fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes and watermelon, are a great source of lycopene. Most orange and yellow fruits and vegetables contain beta-carotene, potassium and vitamin C. And the greens…we love the greens. There are so many different options for you to try. Kale, spinach, arugula, chard, romaine, dandelion even! Don’t overlook the greens when buying your groceries. They are so nutritious and so good for our beautiful bodies. Greens contain c hlorophyll, fibre, calcium, folate, vitamin C, the phytochemical lutein and more. Blue beauties, such as blueberries, are one of the earth’s super foods. Blueberries are high in nutrients but low in calories…and they taste great! Blueberries are a good source of vitamin K, vitamin C and fibre. The power of purple. Purple veggies, such as beets, are a great addition to soups, salads and homemade juices. Beets are loaded with vitamins and minerals and studies have shown that betalains in beets provide anti-inflammatory support. Try grating a beet and a carrot or two for a wonderful, nutritious side salad. And don’t forget about white! Cauliflower, garlic, mushrooms, jicama, coconut & turnip…to name a few.

Choose water over fruit juice or sodas to keep your body hydrated. One cup of fruit juice can add about one hundred calories to your day. Water adds zero calories and will help your body flush out toxins. If water doesn’t float your boat, try adding something to make it a little more interesting. Add citrus, cucumbers, watermelon or some herbs to your glass and make your own vitamin water. No calories and no sugar, but refreshing and hydrating.

Remember, a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean cutting out your favorite treats…it just means consuming them in moderation. When you consume treats on a daily basis, they are no longer treats. Wishing you all much health and happiness. It has been a pleasure and a privilege working with you all.

The Saanich Fair is a must for the whole family on Labour Day weekend! The Saanich Fairgrounds is where fun, food and fantastic meet.

We have a variety of things for people of all ages to see and do.
