Stadium performance highlights from nights two, three and four of CMA Fest; see Thursday’s recap here
• Stick Season: Even with a crowd that was “collectively damp”
– as Kelsea Ballerini joked –Friday night’s (6/6) gate delays and afternoon showers did nothing to dampen the energy at Nissan Stadium.
Rita Wilson opened, delivering a two-song set that began with “The Spark” and introduced a song she’d released that day, “W.O.W. (Wild Old Women).” Next up was Shaboozey , who played one song on the platform stage last year. For his main stage debut, he reprised “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” and added “Good News,” then brought out Jelly Roll for a duet of “Amen.”
Between main acts, Kelly Sutton and Amber Anderson from Amazon Music’s Country Heat Weekly asked their most famous coworker, Alexa, to introduce Kameron Marlowe (“Seventeen,” “Tennessee Don’t Mind”) and Sam Barber (“Same Sad Shit,” “Straight and Narrow”) on the satellite stage.
Mr. Roll returned for another surprise performance, this time on the platform stage, joining Brandon Lake for a choir-backed performance of “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” He also referenced the stadium being built next door by asking, “Let a local boy open the new Nissan Stadium in 2027!” (continued on page 4)
Addcock: Warner ’ s Gavin Adcock celebrates RIAA gold (“Run Your Mouth,“ “Deep End,“ “Four Leaf Clover”) and platinum (“A Cigarette“) certifications during CMA Fest. Pictured (l-r) are the label Williams, Red Light’s Tom Lord, the label’s Justin Luffman the label’s Aaron Bay-Schuck, Red Light’s Saxon Curry label’s Cris Lacy
Thomas Rhett’s Better In Boots Tour kicked off June 5 at Walmart Arkansas Music Pavillion in Rogers, AR. KSSN/Little Rock, KKIX/Fayetteville & KMAG/Ft. Smith, AR PD Jess Jennings was there to share it with Country Aircheck
Warner/WMN’s Castellows opened. “There’s not another female harmony sound like them in the format,” says Jennings. “The lead singer [Lily Balkcom] looked like she was having the time of her life – love her vibe.” EMI/Nashville’s Tucker Wetmore was direct support, and when he got to “Wind Up Missin’ You,” Jennings says he was visibly moved at how the whole crowd was singing along to his first No. 1. Wetmore closed out his set with “Brunette,” which Jennings calls a “freight train of energy.”

Rhett opened his set with the tour’s namesake “Boots,” as the audience all stood in theirs. What followed were more than 20 of his hits – still not enough to squeeze in all of his No. 1s.
Before going into
“Remember You Young,” Rhett reflected that his life is at “Mach 12” with four kids and thanked fellow parents, “I am genuinely blown away that you made time to spend time with us tonight.”
Wetmore returned to the stage to help with “Half Of Me.” Later, Rhett had help from his background singers on “Marry Me.” “They brought a whole other level to the show,” adds Jennings.
Rhett also reflected on what he called, “the worst year of my life, but the best.” Going from touring to six months of idleness during Covid, he said, “without a guitar in my hand, I had no idea who I am. My wife reminded me I was a father, husband, brother, friend and a damn good one. I wrote this song after that conversation with my wife.” That was his intro to “Country Again.”
After reeling off “Unforgettable,” Rhett played to the crowd (the venue is just 16 miles from the University of Arkansas campus) and “yipped” to “call the hogs.” Jennings muses, “I’m not sure he got it, it’s a ‘thing.’”
Rhett brought out the fireworks, literally, for “Craving You,” then started to wind down the evening with his current single, “After All The Bars Are Closed.” “He was sitting at a bar on stage,” says Jennings. “It had a very cool acoustic vibe.”
June 9, 2025
“I’m going to leave you with a love song,” teased Rhett before playing “Die A Happy Man.” “It was a celebration of his musical journey,” concludes Jennings. “TR will take you on a nostalgic ride through his early hits, sparking memories and sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs moments that feel like catching up with an old friend.” Reach Jennings here. –Chris Huff
Congratulations to Megan Moroney, Dennis Reese, Mallory Michaels and the Columbia promotion team on taking “Am I Okay?” to No. 1. This is Moroney’s second trip to the top and comes 10 days shy of the second anniversary of her first, “Tennessee Orange.” This is also just the third No. 1 by a solo female in the past calendar year, and first since Lainey Wilson’s “4X4XU” in February. Songwriters are Jessie Jo Dillon, Luke Laird and Moroney.
Congratulations to Chris Fabiani and the Leo33 crew, who top this week’s CA/MB Add Board with 50 adds for Zach Top’s “Good Times & Tan Lines.”
A bronze statue of George Jones has been added to the Icon Walk outside Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The life-sized statue joins those of Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn, Little Jimmy Dickens, and Bill Monroe, all created by sculptor Ben Watts
Average Joes Entertainment has signed Creed Fisher to a record deal. AEG Presents has acquired the 45-year-old, Nashville-based special events production company Gary Musick Productions and sister company Destination Musick City for an undisclosed price. Gary Musick Productions will retain its name and continue to provide corporate and social event services. Destination Musick City will continue providing immersive experiences and meeting services for groups visiting Nashville.

Texas’ Parker McCollum and Cody Johnson – the latter doubling as host of the CMA Fest special on ABC (6/26) alongside Ashley McBryde –performed back-to-back. McCollum ran through “What Kinda Man,” “Handle On You,” “Pretty Heart” and “Big Sky.” Johnson followed with “The Fall,” “Dirt Cheap,” and “Hurts Like Tequila,” during which he told the crowd, “Thank you for being country music fans,” before surprising the audience with Carín León and closing with “‘Til You Can’t.”
After recalling sitting up in the top of the stadium during CMA Fest at age 12, Ballerini introduced “Cowboys Cry Too” as “a song about being seen and seeing the people you love,” before welcoming Noah Kahan – in his stadium debut – for their duet and his solo “Stick Season.” He joked, “If you don’t know the words, you haven’t been in a Target lately.”
Keith Urban closed out his 10th straight CMA Fest with “Long Hot Summer” (complete with mic-drum solo), followed by “Straight Line,” “Somewhere In My Car,” “Somebody Like You,” “Blue Ain’t Your Color” and “Wasted Time.” –Caitlin DeForest
• No. 1 With A Mullet: “Look at all these country music freaks out here in Nashville,” Blake Shelton shouted to the audience at Nissan Saturday night. Before introducing “Austin,” he recalled playing his very first CMA Fest . “I had a mullet, I was skinny, and this song came out,” he said. “And I’ll be damned that people still remember [it] to this day.” Shelton shared half of his six-song set with surprise guest Trace Adkins , even letting Adkins have the full spotlight for “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.”
Megan Moroney was playing her third CMA Fest, and shared her evolution from the 2023 Spotlight Stage in Music City Center (“I’m pretty sure the only reason people came to see me was because there was air conditioning”) to a 2024 performance on the platform stage at Nissan. That
first year, Moroney could “hardly afford a band” and was accompanied by her attorney brother, Brian. Revisiting the moment, she brought him center stage this year to join on “Tennessee Orange.” Before launching into her final song, “Am I Okay?” Moroney told the crowd, “We are celebrating big tonight because I just got word that this song is my second No. 1 at Country radio. Thank you for loving it as much as we do.”
Jordan Davis had the evening’s longest set at seven songs, including “Next Thing You Know” that had fans lighting up their cell phones and swaying along. Less familiar to country audiences, The Red Clay Strays took full advantage of the opportunity to introduce their Southern Rock vibe to new fans with a set that included “I’m Still Fine” and “No One Else Like Me.”
Show closer Rascal Flatts’ set found lead singer Gary Le Vox working every inch of the stage. Before introducing guest Carly Pearce, who joined for “My Wish,” LeVox said, “Hey Nashville, thank you for coming out and supporting what we love, which is country music.”
Deana Carter opened the show, with Tiera Kennedy and Carter Faith each receiving two-song satellite stage moments. Audacy’s Katie Neal hosted. –Phyllis Stark
• Ain’t That Cool: The final night (6/8) kicked off with Rodney Atkins’ “Take A Back Road” and “If You’re Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows).” Son Elijah Atkins joined him on stage for “Watching You 2.0,” which Rodney shared is “the way I think [the song] was always meant to be.”
The crowd was noticeably on its feet for Zach Top’s six-song set. “I played the platform stage here last year ... it’s been a wild year since then,” he said. His set included the debut of “Good Times And Tan Lines,” as well as “Sounds Like the Radio” and a crowd sing-along of “I Never Lie.”
Platform stage performances included Avery Anna (“Indigo”),
Kashus Culpepper (“Pour Me Out”), Tucker Wetmore (“Wind Up Missin’ You”) and Dylan Scott (“Country Til I Die”), who performed while walking through the crowd.
“I started playing in bars when I was 19 years old,” Ashley McBryde shared. “I’d say it’s working out.” The co-host’s 30-minute set included “Rattlesnake Preacher,” “The Devil I Know” and “Tired Of Being Happy.” She also brought out New Orleans’ The Roots of Music Marching Band, an after-school organization for low-income middle school students, for their solo performance of “Boogie Wonderland.”
Bailey Zimmerman’s highenergy set featured surprise guests Josh Ross (“Backup Plan”) and BigXthaPlug (“All The Way”). He encouraged the crowd to light up the stadium for his closing number, “Rock and a Hard Place.”
“The music gets recorded in this town, but the music doesn’t live in this town,” Dierks Bentley shared. “The music lives where you guys come from.” His set included “She Hates Me,” “What Was I Thinking” and “Drunk On a Plane.” Top joined Bentley during a mashup of “Free And Easy (Down The Road I Go)” and “Mountain Music.” “You guys know the real deal when you see it, and when [Zach Top] comes rolling through town, make sure you come out to a show,” Bentley said.
Luke Bryan’s 10-song set included “I Don’t Want This Night To End,” “What Makes You Country,” and “Strip It Down,” with Bryan solo on piano. He closed CMA Fest after midnight with “Country Girl (Shake It For Me),” which featured dance performances by a Nissan Stadium security officer and a fan from the audience. –Addie Morton
