Radio & Records: Family Tradition Pt. 2

Spotlighting family members working in the country music industry continues with Jim and Liz Mantel and Tim and Kelcie Roberts

• WLKK/Buffalo morning host Liz Mantel and father/Country Radio Hall of Famer Jim Mantel:

LM: I was always tagging along to events, remotes, concerts, I loved it! My sister never really did — she just wasn’t interested — but I am so much like my dad and would thrive on making people laugh. There was always a built-in audience around him.

I can’t pinpoint a moment when I realized what my dad did for a living, because we didn’t know anything different. I don’t think in our young ages it ever occurred to us that everyone’s dad wasn’t on the radio.

JM: The first time I had a feeling Liz would be good at radio was my wife’s 40th birthday. She loves cows, so I hired a 4H girl to bring a cow and calf over at about 5am as a surprise. They got loose and the whole neighborhood was running around trying to catch them. I had Liz on the phone doing play-by-play and remember being impressed with how well she did painting a really good picture.

LM: When we lived in Corpus Christi, my dad was buried alive. For some reason, they thought it would be a good idea to have his children there as they dug him out

OFF THE RECORD

Spotify Lead/Artist & Label Partnerships Gemma McInturff goes Off (The Record):

There is a bustling country music scene in Australia! Right now, they’re loving having Luke Combs there; I’m sure my family is front row. While we love when artists tour, we also have a very rich local scene. Most classic Australian music –whether you’re listening to Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins or Cold Chisel – is about the story and relatability to an aspirational genre that hooks most Aussies. We also love to party and have a good time! It does not surprise me in the slightest to see country music grow so rapidly back home.

Country music has warmed up to streaming and we now see many “hits” break on streaming first, which in part adds to the radio success stories. Streaming still has a lot of common misconceptions — I’m very passionate about educating all who are interested in this space. I’m on the CRS Agenda Committee for 2023 and love how that group is working to integrate the radio and digital music worlds.

The biggest opportunity is working country music globally. The growth we’ve seen in the last three-to-five years as the genre is able to reach wider audiences is where my focus is currently. There are country music fans all over the world, from markets like Canada and the UK to Sweden, South Africa, and beyond. Connecting those global fans to great country music, while also highlighting local talent the US market might love, is my north star. I’ve spent a lot of time in these global markets this year and am always floored to see fans on the other side of the world out at shows screaming every word to country songs. The artists love it, too!

One of my favorite things about Nashville is the absolutely gorgeous community we have in country music. Everyone really does look after each other ... it’s pretty special. Sonically, there are some unique differences around the world. For example, Afrikaans is the country genre in South Africa and has an AC spin on it. Whereas in Australia, there’s often a rock edge on country music. It’s really amazing how music brings people from all walks of life together, no matter where they’re from. It all starts and ends with three chords and the truth.

I’m proud to say I’ve been relentless on this career path, never giving up on what I believe. If I could share advice with a younger me, I’d probably say to go ahead and take up the space. Share the idea. Be bold. Have confidence in your ideas and know you’ve earned your place in the rooms you’re in. I’d also tell myself to slow down and really give things thought – and to always be kind and pay it forward!

• “After 10 nominations and finally winning, I’ll be known as Susan Lucci from here on out.” –Bass Player of the Year bass Mark Hill

• “I thought the t-shirt and jeans look would work, but I just look like I’m shopping for lumber at Home Depot.” –Drummer of the Year Aaron Sterling

• “This is the first time I get to stand up here as an American citizen. America!” –Piano/Keyboards Player of the Year Dave Cohen

• “My dream was hearing my fiddle on Country radio one day. It is such a joy to get to do that. I know there are some dreamers here tonight. Just lean into what you love.” –Specialty Instrument Player of the Year Jenee Fleenor

• “We love Rascal Flatts so much!” –attendee mistaking Shawn Parr for Gary LeVox

• “I would be remiss in accepting an award like this, the first of its kind, without acknowledging the Black railroad workers who taught Jimmie Rodgers to play the banjo; Rufus Teetot Payne, who taught Hank Williams the blues; DeFord Bailey, the first black member of the Grand Ole Opry; the Great Charley Pride, Linda Martell, Darius, Kane, Mickey, Nelly, and so many more. –inaugural ACM Lift Every Voice Award recipient Breland

• “I’m not comfortable with the word icon, certainly as it applies to me, but as I was thinking about it and the truth is that if it wasn’t for me, you all probably would’ve never heard songs like the cowin-the-road song [Diamond Rio’s “How Your Love Makes Me Feel”], “Country Girl (Shake It For Me),” and “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk.” –Icon honoree Mike Dungan

• “He’s currently booked in the most glorious venue.” –Charlie Daniels Jr. on his father and Spirit Award recipient

• “Kane came along a couple of years after Randy had his stroke … that’s the fascinating part of it. But somehow, there was this love that has never gone away or diminished. There’s no silence that music is afraid of.” –Mary Travis presenting Kane Brown with the International Award

• “This means a lot for a boy from Georgia that the furthest he’d ever traveled was Florida. Country music let me in as family, and now I get to travel the world.” –Brown

• “I met Hardy when he had a first name.” –ArtistSongwriter of the Year Hardy’s cousin/publisher Dennis Matkosky

• “I’m passionate about one thing at the end of the day and that’s writing a great song. It’s such an appropriate title for the award, because I truly am an artist in the sense that I love singing songs, and I truly am a songwriter.” –Hardy

• “Do something for someone tomorrow that causes them to say, ‘Thank you.’ They will feel good, you’ll feel good and you’ll move the ball down the field.” –Service Award honoree Charlie Cook

• “I’d like to say I’m humbled to be given this award, but it wouldn’t be truthful. Francis Scott Key wrote the national anthem and was never given this award. Edgar Allen Poe, Keats never got an ACM Poet’s Award.” –Poet’s Award winner Clint Black

“I believe writing songs is a privilege and music is a gift from [God]. I want to thank the artists, especially from this past year, that allowed me to be in their world and part of their journey.” –Songwriter of the Year Ashley Gorley

• “Music is the universal force that brought us all together, and music can change or save a life. I know it saved mine probably more than once. –Icon Award winner Tim McGraw –Caitlin DeForest

of this coffin! We got to ride in a limo to the event (of course we remember this), then they made us walk up to this pipe that connected to his coffin in the ground and talk to him. I honestly don’t understand how my sister and I aren’t in therapy. When they pulled him out, he couldn’t really stand and we thought there was blood all over him, but a red Gatorade had shattered in the coffin. It was traumatizing

One year at the WGAR Jam, I was helping sell t-shirts and saw the programs weren’t moving. The autograph tent was right next to the station tent, so I grabbed a handful of programs, opened it to the page of the artist who was signing and walked down the line selling a ton.

JM: I remember our sales manager being very impressed with her pitch and moxie! Outside of getting her an interview for her first internship that turned into a job, everything she’s done she has done on her own. Once she got into the business, I offered advice from time to time, but I never was actively involved.

LM: He was always there to help with tapes, bits and even how to do the best show prep. However, the industry has changed so much that

it’s hard for him to really know what to say or how to navigate the inner workings of radio today. He is and will always be a sounding board. When it comes to connecting and entertaining, he is always someone I bounce ideas off.

• Audacy VP/Country Format Tim Roberts and daughter/former Big Loud Mgr./Marketing Kelcie Roberts:

TR: Kelcie was destined to be in the music business. My wife, Lori Lynn Taylor, was working with me at KDRK in Spokane as MD/middays and took Kelcie to work with her everyday before she was born. In essence, the audience lived through her childbirth and thereafter as Lori did the show from our house while on a working maternity leave. It was engaging, entertaining and humanizing radio. We ended up with the best ratings in the history of the station!

KR: I don’t remember that, but I do remember mom as a DJ when I was in elementary school. She would take me to work with her on the weekends, and I was enamored with her talent. She had the coolest job – besides being my Mom, of course! I helped her cut lines and to this day, she’s the best “Lynn Taylor” I know!

TR: Kelcie loved live music and, at our legendary Hoedown in downtown Detroit, was exposed to a lot of acts in one weekend. Rascal Flatts was one of her favorites, and I remember in the pit with her at that show, as well as getting on Little Big Town’s bus with her when she was in middle school. Her eyes were as big as saucers, and they were so kind.

KR: When I was 16, I worked at Burger King. One night, my dad was supposed to pick me up when, right as my shift ended, a tour bus pulled into

the parking lot. Next thing I know, Dustin Lynch is walking through the doors with a cowboy hat on telling me he’s there to pick me up. I had never met him before and my face was beat red. When I saw my dad outside, I told him, “I’m in my Burger King outfit meeting Dustin Lynch!”

I wanted to be a veterinarian until I learned I’m very squeamish. Naturally, my next option was the music industry. II knew I didn’t want to do radio, but I wanted to work on artist teams in some capacity. Fast forward to my time at Belmont University, Broken Bow was my very first internship and I helped promote Dustin’s debut album – a very full-circle moment.

TR: My first advice was about the long hours and dedication it takes. Secondly, you won’t be rich in your first job … you gotta pay your dues. Lastly, networking. Kelcie was a master of that before she even graduated. She had awesome internships including working with the late great Jeff Walker and Christy at Aristo Media, who treated her like family. BMG and CMT, too, to name a few. Her resume was better than mine and she was still in school!

While at Big Loud, she was always working me over like a promotions rep on their singles even though she was a marketing director. Her passion for the music she loves was unmatched and Seth [England] and Candice [Watkins] and Stacy [Blythe] and the whole Big Loud team saw that in action.

KR: He taught me that if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. My brothers and I were all born in different states because my parents were establishing themselves in the radio world. They were never discouraged because they were determined to keep moving up the ladder.
