Q&A: Behind The First AI Jock
On June 13, Alpha Top 40 KBFF/Portland, OR introduced its new midday host, AI Ashley. The first-ever “AI jock” is the synthesized voice of sister Top 40 WKHQ PD/morning host “Ashley Z” Elzinga, who’d previously been voicetracking the shift. Country Aircheck spoke with Alpha EVP/Content Phil Becker about the decision to launch an AI personality, how it works, and what the future of AI radio might hold.
CA: How long has this been in the works?
PB: We started dabbling with this when ChatGPT was opened to the public last November. We’ve been looking at what it can do, what it can’t do, what we’re comfortable and what we’re not. So it took about seven months.
How does AI Ashley work?
It’s a series of products starting with Futuri’s TopicPulse, which has an interface with ChatGPT-4 to read articles and rewrite them. We ingest that into the RadioGPT software. You can tell it, “Take this article and write it in a longform, in bullet points, as a social post, or in an overthe-air fashion.” After that data is in the software, Ashley’s synthesized voice reads stories, we get to see that in text fashion and hear it in audio fashion, then decide if we want to hit the next activator – the automation system, Futuri’s Echo. You can use an out-of-the-box AI voice, but we decided to make a synthesized version of Ashley Z, so we keep her on the team, pay her as we’ve always paid her, and use the voice that’s already trusted on the station.
Does the AI recognize that a Taylor Swift song is coming up and inject something about her?
Yes, it absolutely sees there’s a Taylor song coming up, goes back into TopicPlus, looks for the most meaningful and immediate Taylor Swift stories from around the world, generates the script and takes the synthesized voice that goes into the automation over the ramp of the Taylor song. It also has the intelligence to recognize the song has a 17 second intro, so it will alter the length of the story to post the vocal.
The AI will do as much or as little as you allow it. How many personalities take the time to say, “Let me find the 25 most relevant Taylor stories in this moment” and adjust their content accordingly?

Tour Launch: Eric Church
Eric Church opened The Outsiders Revival Tour Thursday night (6/22) at Milwaukee, WI’s Summerfest at American Family Insurance Amphitheater. iHeartMedia WMIL/Milwaukee PD/APD/MD/afternoon personality Shanna “Quinn” Cudeck was among the radio personnel in attendance, and she tells Country Aircheck what others can expect on Church’s 35-date outing.
“The place erupted when he walked onstage,” she says of the crowd of 20,000-plus. The production is purposefully understated to complement Church’s rock band style. “It’s not a super-flashy stage, but in a good way,” she continues. “He doesn’t need it with his energy!”
Even after telling the audience that he was slightly under-the-weather, Church performed 23 songs over the course

of more than two hours. This outing, his band features a three-piece horn section and three backing singers. The set list will vary at each stop, and in Milwaukee included “Homeboy,” “Smoke A Little Smoke,” “Heart Like A Wheel,” “Where I Wanna Be” and the new arrangement of “Drink In My Hand,” which he recently debuted at Nashville’s CMA Fest
Says Cudeck, “I posted a video on my TikTok and Instagram of him performing ‘Heart On Fire’ and that was my favorite memory. His intensity and love for what he does shines through every time I see him play. He never takes it for granted.“
Elle King opened, performing her new song, “Without You,” which was released Friday (6/23). “People were pleasantly surprised when they heard her hits, as she’s not super well-known to the average country listener,” says Cudeck.
Prior to the show, Church welcomed radio friends and guests to a private gathering. “It was a bar set up with his new whiskey,” she adds. “His personal playlist was playing, and a Nelly Furtado song popped on … we learned from the man himself that he loves the song ‘Give It To Me.’ Quite the plot twist!” Church closed the night with an unplanned second encore.
With Summerfest’s numerous stages and performances, fireworks and amusement rides, “It was a party!” Cudeck sums.

My Pride Story: Al Farb
In a continuation of Country Aircheck’s Country Pride series, Cumulus KSCS/Dallas APD/MD/Afternoon host Al Farb shares his coming out story and how living authentically gave him confidence both on and off the air.
I was 25 when I fully accepted myself.
I started to very slowly tiptoe out of the closet — first to friends, then family members, with the last one being the hardest for me, my dad. He found out I was gay by a mutual family friend who mentioned, “Oh, I met Al and his boyfriend.” I woke up to a text the next morning with a message every gay man wants from his father: he supports and loves me for who I am. It was like a weight had been lifted. When you’re lying to the people you love and interact with on a normal basis, it really takes a toll on your mental health.
I was the morning show producer at KKBQ/Houston and Bruce [Logan] was the new PD at our competitor, KILT. Somebody said Bruce was gay, not knowing I was as well. Without even knowing or meeting him, he gave me courage. All I knew was that he’s running a Country station in Texas – or any major market Country station – and he’s accepted by his peers and the music community. It wasn’t very long after that I invited my boyfriend to a station event and the only reaction I remember getting was from my boss at the time, Johnny Chiang, who goes, “Well Al, it’s about damn time.” Apparently my poker face wasn’t as good as I thought it was. All of the scary moments I built up in my head never ever happened at all.
The longer I was on the air in Houston and eventually Dallas, the less restrictive I’ve been. I’m not not-out, but I’m not out either. Even if I were straight, my role isn’t really to talk about my personal life in that way. Things come up from time to time, but I’ll use general terms like “we do this,” “we bought a house” or “we went to see this movie.” Gage is on my arm at every event possible, including station events with listeners, and I’ve had people either ask or I’ve introduced him. I’ve gotten no pushback, no

awkward moments, negative comments or emails to the radio station.
I’m trying to be representative of our community while still understanding our audience. If I were to come out on the air today, “By the way, I’m gay and here’s Morgan Wallen.” Somebody might look at that and say, “Okay, well, I don’t listen to you because you’re gay, straight, Christian, Jewish or anything. I listen because I want an escape from my hectic workday, to listen to the music I love and maybe win some concert tickets.” That’s where people sometimes get confused, especially in our format.
After TJ Osborne came out, I was interviewing him at the ACM Awards and, at the end, said, “By the way, thank you so much for sharing your story.” He was like, “I just knew you as Al the Country radio guy. Now I know you as Al the Country radio guy who’s very successful, who also happens to be gay.” You’ve got to really look inside and love yourself so that you can be your authentic self. Now more than ever, if radio’s going to be anything, it needs to be authentic, especially with AI knocking on our door. If you’re not being your true self then you’re not delivering the best possible version of yourself on the air either.
The culture Cumulus’ Mary Berner has created is supportive – not just of the LGBTQI+ community, but for women and minorities. I’ve always felt supported by the PDs, our GM Dan Bennett, at the corporate level with Doug Hammond and Brian Phillips, all the way up to Mary.
At its core, Country music is about real life – relatable human experiences that transcend the labels society has placed on us. That’s what it’s all about.
—Al Farb, as told to Caitlin DeForest
Chart Chat
Congratulations to Jordan Davis, Miranda McDonald, David Friedman and the MCA promotion team on taking “Next Thing You Know” to No. 1. This is Davis’ sixth chart-topper and his fastest rising single, reaching the pinnacle
10 weeks faster than any of his prior releases. Songwriters are Chase McGill, Greylan James, Josh Osborne and Davis.
Kudos to Stacy Blythe and the Big Loud crew on racking up 75 adds for Morgan Wallen ’s “Everything I Love” to lead the CA/ MB Add Board. This is the largest single add week to date for Wallen, eclipsing his previous record of 65 for the first week of “Wasted On You” in March 2022.
OFF THE RECORD
Big Loud’s Jake Owen goes Off (The Record) about his new album, Loose Cannon :
I’ve definitely got a few more grays on my chin since Greetings from … Jake, but hopefully I’ve gotten a little wiser and smarter. Hopefully I’ve become more humble, grateful, at peace with my life and thankful for the fact I still get to do this for a living. I’m still living a dream after almost 20 years of chasing it.
I’ve always been a “best song wins” kind of guy. On my early records, I wrote everything. For this one, I’ve really enjoyed the process of finding songs I’m a fan of, interpreting them in my own way and delivering them. Some of my favorite artists of all time did the same: Kenny Chesney, George Strait and Alan Jackson. All are great writers and can write great songs, but the majority of hits they had were from these incredible songwriters in Nashville. I enjoyed digging into that well. I plan to put out a record with just my songs – hopefully soon.
The title track is my favorite on the album, just from a standpoint of what it says. I am a loose cannon, so it parallels my life really well. When I sing it, it feels like me. I’m grateful for the rocks and the anchors that hold me down and bring me back to reality in those times when I’m becoming the loose cannon.
My buddy Jordan Davis sent me a song called “Somewhere South With Rum” awhile ago that I’m really, really proud of, and I hope he is too. He flattered me when he said, “We wrote this song for you and you have to record it.” I’m a beach guy, so being somewhere south with rum resonates well ... but I also know the feeling of love lost and wishing you had it back. It’s a really cool way of saying it.
“Solo, Solo” is just a good, fun drinking song. I really love that tune, and I think a lot of people out there will, too.
I don’t think there are enough songs about friendships [like “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drink Alone”]. I’m lucky to have some awesome friends who’d be there for me in a heartbeat, and I would be there for them the same way.

Q&A: Behind The First AI Jock
(continued from page 1)
Are we doing that much prep as an industry? If you have someone who’s voicetracking, they probably cut that break hours or even days
beforehand. This can generate the content for a break, down to 60 seconds before it airs.
What happens when a local emergency or breaking event occurs?
There is a secondary text-to-speech feature that allows the PD to write any immediately relevant text. You can write out the break, send it to the AI voice and load it into the system. However, AI doesn’t know that I-5 being shut down is more significant than a traffic light out downtown. Until that story has become part of the online conversation, it’s not going to have the ability to talk about it. That’s why we chose to experiment with this on one station in one daypart. That’s also why we made sure not to use it as a replacement for a human being. I can›t put my or my company’s initials on a larger rollout because it can’t do that.
Some might have experimented with this under the radar. Why did you start on-air?
Putting this on in a meaningful daypart on a meaningful station means getting to the answers, next steps and dos-and-don’ts faster.
Page 7 June 26, 2023
This technology is moving so quickly that I didn’t want to be behind where the industry will be. You should tell the audience what you’re doing – freely disclose that it is AI. The general population doesn’t think this is new. They have smart speakers or ask Siri for information, which are the same technologies behind RadioGPT.
What has the listener reaction been?
There was a vocal group that says, “ The Simpsons predicted this, the robots are taking over,” and thinks it’s witty to be the 29th person to email the Terminator/Sarah Connor meme. We did some research about which formats are the most and least accepting of this idea; Top 40 was very accepting.
We did an ask-me-anything with Ashley, and listeners only wanted to know when the next Taylor Swift giveaway was. If we’d put this on in another market, with another format and target demo, the reaction would have been different, but in this case, they didn’t have any questions. I would not recommend AI for every station though; this is not one size fits all.
What would you say to skeptics?
This is an opportunity for radio to be in conversations about media content and revenue, where it hasn’t been of late. Spotify, Apple Music and DSPs are asking, “What can we learn from radio that we can apply to our business to grow it?” I’m asking, “What can we learn from the tech world that we can apply to our business?”
When’s the last time people had this many conversations about anything on terrestrial radio? It used to be that our job as programmers was to capture attention. We’ve had so little positive attention that we almost don’t know how to react to it. Yes, we know this is a spirited conversation, but we’re excited that there’s conversation.
There’s a famous quote by futurist Rishad Tobaccowala: “The
future will not fit in the containers of the past.” If we want to keep this industry viable, relevant, and thriving, why are we trying to put it in the box that it used to be in?
Where do you see AI by the end of the year?
You’ll see a rapid adoption in the next couple of months. People will start to say, “If I can have an AI personality instead of just segues and sweepers, that’s probably a better option.” You will see clients asking radio stations if they can clone their voice, so they don’t have to come in to cut commercials. You will see AI doing features and interviews with artists, and you’ll see an entirely AI station by the end of the year.
