“There’s a reason why there’s ‘seven’ in the title,” Garth Brooks said at Thursday’s (6/15) press conference launching his partnership with TuneIn “There will be other stations.” During the event in downtown Nashville, Brooks and his team offered the clearest picture yet of how the network’s flagship, “The Big 615,” will operate, its goals and what’s still to come.

Led by PD Bob Richards, The Big 615 team includes host Storme Warren, MD Monta Vaden and industry relations consultant Maurice Miner. Richards says the task was “putting structure” to Garth’s vision.

“He’s very clear about new songs from the greats and superstars and new artists we can help build a following ... it’s not as transactional as it is at terrestrial radio.”

European Rotation: While familiar, the station’s nuts-and-bolts aren’t as tight as terrestrial stations (see sample hour p5). “It’s definitely a structure with rotations people would recognize, but the category structure is a little different in having so much more latitude,” Richards says. “If we like a song, we play it. We’re not bound by a certain number of titles in a category or a male/female split. There’s no waiting in line. We’ll monitor rotations and make sure songs are getting enough exposure. We’ll be building listener data quickly, but right now, if we like a song, we can put it in.”

As for the musical era and mix, “Garth did say we’re leaning traditional, and we are,” Richards explains. “But it doesn’t mean that’s the only sound you’re going to hear on the station. Sonically, it will have the variety people are used to and, hopefully, a lot more.”

Warren hosts his weekday show 7am to 1pm CT, with a repeat airing at midnight. He also hosts a Top 20 countdown Saturdays at 10am CT, repeating at 2pm CT Sunday. “There will be an overnight run so we see daylight hours in Europe, Australia and New Zealand,” Richards says. “We’ve had that in beta, so Storme has been doing a countdown for about 20 people at TuneIn for the past few weeks.” Filling out the rest of the staff is one of Richards’ next priorities.

Repeat airings will add fresh breaks for international audiences. “We also have some ‘reporters,’” Richards says. “People in the U.K., Australia and Singapore who will be on his show regularly.”

Career Arc Gets Top Billings

When Karen Gallagher was named Market Manager for Townsquare’s Billings, MT five-station cluster in April (CAT 4/24), a 30-year career that has primarily revolved around Country KCTR was brought full-circle.

“It’s been a long trip,” admits Gallagher, who says she was 12 when she knew she wanted to get into broadcasting. “After high school, I went to broadcasting school and then got my first job at KLTZ/Glasgow, MT. The guy I was dating was transferred to Billings, so I moved with him. I saw a new station was signing on, so I applied.” Gallagher was hired for KCTR’s 7pm to midnight shift in 1988 and moved up the ranks. “I moved to middays, then added APD duties. I did that for almost 14 years.”

Gallagher faced her first major setback in 2001. “Clear Channel bought us and there were a bunch of cuts,” she says. “I was pregnant with our second child, Karen Gallagher

so a friend offered me a job as his OM for a couple of stations in southern Minnesota.” It didn’t take long for the Montana native to return home, though, handling mornings at the crosstown Benedetti Media cluster. By that point, Clear Channel had sold the cluster that included KCTR. “I had the opportunity to come back to [KCTR] Cat Country,” she explains. “I was selling full-time and voice-tracking middays. About a year-and-a-half ago I stopped tracking so I could dedicate myself to sales.

“I always wanted a management position,” she explains. “This was the next logical step for me to move up with the company. For the longest time I thought I would be a Content Dir. or PD. I worked through five different market presidents and decided if I wanted the atmosphere where I worked to change, I would have to step up and make that change.”

As Gallagher demonstrates, a career standing in opposition to the easy narrative about radio is still attainable. “Take the job that’s available and be accessible,” she advises. “That’s how you’re going to grow. Get to know

everything you can about the company and its jobs – not just yours. Pay attention and take notes. If there’s training available, take it. Make the job your own and grow – and don’t be afraid to ask. No one’s going to offer you anything. If you want to be an APD, nine times out of 10 they’re not going to come and ask you. You don’t know if you don’t ask.”

The divisions within radio can be bridged. “I’ve been on air and have been on the sales side, so I get the frustrations of both sides,” Gallagher says. “A lot of people have come from one side of the building, but I’m balanced between sales staff concerns and talking to programming every day. If there’s an issue, we have a conversation to make sure we’re coming together and working properly.

“This is a big opportunity,” she says. “I couldn’t be more thankful for and humbled by everyone at Townsquare believing in me.” Reach Gallagher here –Chris Huff

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Megan Moroney, Steve Hodges, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on taking Moroney’s debut release, “Tennessee Orange,” to No. 1 with the largest single week points total for a solo female in the Mediabase era. Moroney is the first solo female to take a debut to the top since Tenille Arts in April 2021, and is just the ninth solo female to accomplish the feat this century. The song is also just the third No. 1 song to feature Tennessee in its title, following Dolly Parton’s “Tennessee Homesick Blues” (1984) and Rosanne Cash’s “Tennessee Flat Top Box” (1988). Alabama’s “Tennessee River” peaked at No. 4 on the R&R chart. Songwriters are Ben Williams, David Fanning, Paul Jenkins and Moroney.

The No. 7 to No. 4 jump by Luke Combs’ “Fast Car” this week makes it the first song to reach the top five in seven weeks or less since Kenny Chesney’s

Megan Moroney Wheeling and Dealing: Karen Gallagher at a KCTR auto dealership remote in the early 90s.

“Don’t Blink” did so in six weeks in October 2007. Elsewhere in the top 10, Jelly Roll breaks new ground with “Need A Favor;” the song moves to No. 8 on the Country chart, and is at No. 3 on this week’s Active Rock chart, making it the first song to ever reach the top 10 simultaneously on both.

Kudos to Kris Lamb and the Big Machine crew on racking up 94 adds for “We Don’t Fight Anymore” by Carly Pearce featuring Chris Stapleton. Not only is this Pearce’s largest add week ever, it is the largest for a solo female or female-led record since Maren Morris’ “Circles Around This Town” in January 2022.

Tear Down This Wall: The global nature of the stations is foundational. TuneIn CEO Richard Stern was present at the launch event, telling those assembled, “We’ll be on 200 different connected device and vehicle platforms within 60 seconds when Garth announces the station. From Tesla to Amazon – all of our partners showed up to make this the biggest launch in the company’s history. This will truly be a global radio station.”

Later he told Country Aircheck, “One of our core missions is to help reinvent radio for a connected world. An extension of that is to take formats and genres that may have been landlocked or [less] exposed to the global audience and reinvent them together with artists like Garth. Our mission is to create an awesome Country radio station that people will [also] love in Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. If we do that, we’ve accomplished our goal. And that, of course, will lead to more listening and more people on the platform.”

While Brooks offered a free TuneIn Premium subscription to his fanbase, SRN stations will all be free. “A big difference with these stations from what Garth was doing with SiriusXM is you don’t need a membership,” Stern says. “You can walk up to your Alexa, Google Home, Homepod, Tesla or download our app and listen for free.”

TuneIn will roll out its revenue model later in the year. “This summer it’s ad-free,” Stern says. “We really want people to focus on the listening and getting involved. We’ll talk about monetization in the fall. One of the things

that got us excited is what happens when you take a star like Garth with his vision and put it in front of the paywall? How big could the audience be? We’re excited to explore that.”

Across The Channel(s): Richards expects an unconventional approach to advertising.

“The plan is not to have a spot load, but one sponsor for the entire station,” he says. “It’s an activated partnership more than a traditional spot buy.”

The Big 615 will lead a family of stations that Brooks indicated includes a classic country focus and one solely for the women of country. “There are two others in the pipeline before those two come,” Richards says. “There will be two more this year, yet to be revealed. The two Garth referred to are tentatively planned for first quarter and second quarter next year.”

And for TuneIn, Brooks is just the beginning. “Our commitment to country music extends beyond Garth,” Stern says. “He’s the first and the ambassador, but we believe in it as a category. We believe in the artists. Because we’re not limited to a single geo or [number of] channels, this is a big tent where there’s room for everybody.”

Jake Owen Loose Cannon (Big Loud) Songwriters and artists including Ashley Gorley, Brent Cobb, Rodney Clawson, Jessie Jo Dillon, Luke Laird, Jordan Davis, Devin Dawson and Walker Hayes have credits on Owen’s 16-track seventh studio album.

Michael Ray Dives Bars & Broken Hearts (Warner/WEA)

“[This project] is me getting to the sound I’ve always heard in my head, something that’s played on a jukebox or a bandstand in a bar somewhere just outside of town,” says Ray. His six-song, Michael Knox-produced EP includes “Get Her Back,” “Spirits And Demons” with Meghan Patrick and “Workin’ On It.”

Tigirlily Gold Blonde (Monument)

The sister duo took inspiration from Dolly Parton for their debut EP. Kendra Slaubaugh explained, “Blonde is a state of mind. The song/EP is all about channeling that inner confidence, staying true to your story, being able to poke fun at yourself and having fun along the way.”
