OFF THE RECORD
Records Nashville’s Erin Kinsey goes Off (The Record):
My dad always had [KPLX/Dallas] playing in his car. I grew up on so many country music influences howling after that Country station slogan. It was full circle to be interviewed by them in Frisco last week at the ACMs.

ERIN KINSEY
I was lucky enough to grow up on Country radio, so a lot of the artists between 2008-2015 had a huge influence. I always looked up to Miranda Lambert. Her hometown was only a couple hours away from mine, and she loved dogs, like I did. She carved her own path and was true to herself.
The one thing I wish I would have learned earlier in my career was to just write my own stories and enjoy every moment. I was told that over and over since my first day in Nashville, but I’m just now starting to believe and live with those things in mind. It’s crazy how similar our stories can be, and to get to be the one that puts it in a song is just magical.
Being from right down the road from Frisco, it was so cool to see a city I had been to many times and my Nashville family collide at the ACMs. I got to chat with a lot of the Texas media outlets that I grew up on, like the radio station that made me fall in love with country music, and the local TV stations I grew up watching. That was very, very special.
If 40 East was the “first-date introduction,” Bet My Heart (out now) is getting underneath the surface talk and into the good stuff. I was lucky enough to work with people I had dreamed of being in the room with — Sarah Buxton, Josh Kerr, Parker Welling. This EP, in the good ways and all the other ways, is pretty much a time capsule of 2022 for me.
All of the tracks on the EP were ones I couldn’t imagine not being on the project, which is how we ended up with seven songs for an EP. Every song felt like it covered a different little corner of things I wanted to say and how I wanted to say them.
The title track is definitely one of my favorite songs. It’s about betting it all, and let’s just say I’m not very good at doing things halfway. It’s what has gotten me in a lot of trouble, and it’s also what brought me to Nashville.
I’m having so much fun writing and releasing songs I’ve never been more proud of, and couldn’t feel more like me. I’m excited to take things to a deeper level with the music, and I can’t wait to see what Country radio and listeners think. I’m hoping these songs, and the ones to come, show people they aren’t alone. Country music is a community. Through music, we can let people know that through the good and the bad, someone’s got their back. Even if it’s just through the radio waves.

Q&A With ACM’s Kapoor & Menton
(continued from page 1)
The Ford Center is not just a new venue for the ACMs, but had never had an event of this scale before. What were the challenges and opportunities?
PM: It was an educational process throughout. For instance, they didn’t know we had a full dress rehearsal right before the show. They had no idea about those kinds of movements and cadences but, even so, they were incredible partners.
RK: What really blew me away was the transformation. When we walked into that venue for the first time, I don’t know how enamored I was. The outside and infrastructure around it are really attractive, but the inside of the building was kind of a blank slate. But by showtime with all the pieces in place, it looked and felt great. Clean, modern and a good reflection of our production and lighting teams’ exceptional work. The width of the stage, the venue’s black seats – it all worked.
PM: When you turn a football practice facility into an awards show venue, you’re going to hit roadblocks. I would have loved for our talent compound to be a bit closer to the building. Yes, we had to cover a practice field and use golf carts. But I have to call out our event lead with the Cowboys, James Stocum, who was incredible. Every time I reached out with an issue, he found a solution.
RK: Everyone with the Cowboys showed they had immense pride in partnering with us, as did the DCP team Karen Scarminach and Fonda Anita put together. There was such a learning curve, but I can’t imagine a better scenario. Everyone rose to the challenge.
Because the floor is the width of a football field, the stage and screens were immense. How did that affect your decisions?
RK: We took full advantage of using those screens to celebrate our Entertainer nominees in 45-second packages. What does being an entertainer mean? The industry knows, but I don’t know if the public does. The hope was to bring all that to life, amplifying how important that award is.
How did it go with your hosts?
RK: Dolly and Garth were a dream. They put their heart and soul into it, which was evident from the love they had for each other onstage, backstage and in the promo videos. Having two of the biggest stars in this genre was a “pinch me” moment...
PM: Two of the biggest stars beyond any genre...
RK: Yes, exactly. Superstars. Icons. Even Dolly’s improv moments – like what G.O.A.T. really meant. Garth hadn’t heard that joke before she said it onstage, and you can sense him thinking, “Holy shit, I can’t believe Dolly just said ‘threesome’ in front of the whole world.” But she can do that and you love her even more.
Any issues with the writer strike?
RK: There was a lot of foresight in having our writing team start early with our hosts. We had three drafts of the entire script signed-off Friday [5/5] before the strike. We were prepared because it’s really important to us to honor their stance and their union. We would never do anything to jeopardize support for any of the unions by the Academy, DCP or even just our personal reputations. Those of us in the entertainment community have to support each other.
What was the thinking behind the references to past winners?
RK: That was a conversation with [writer] David Wild early on about amplifying the Academy and the trophy. The overall prestige of this award is something we wanted to celebrate as it differentiates this show from others out there. So all night long you saw reminders of the history, the artists who have won before and the trophy. I’d like to push that envelope even more. And speaking of envelopes, I’d also like to be involved in the envelope design. Why were they so large? When Dolly was holding it, it almost covered her entire face. Those are the little things you see and want to improve on.
What were the performance moments that had interesting backstories?
RK: One of them is The War And Treaty. Patrick was able to see them in New Orleans and came back so fired up. That was probably a three-month process with our partners at Amazon, and then they were nominated and it fell into place. We originally looked at a song that was more energetic, but we

saw a video of them that had the simple aesthetic as they face each other and focus on their connection. It was a very different look for an awards show.
PM: Raj and I both do this because we love music so much. When I was brought into country eight years ago, I didn’t realize there was country music for everyone. I thought it was just one sound and everyone listened to it. And I’m so grateful this community embraced me as someone from the pop and R&B world because I have found so much that I love. One of our jobs is to show that country is global and has many different lanes. When I saw The War And Treaty I was touched on a spiritual level I’ll never be able to explain. I knew they could give us that on this show and I’m so glad they did because, selfishly, I thought, “God, if they don’t I’m going to get beaten up here!”
RK: Another example was Miranda’s performance, which has been written up as one of the performances of the night. Our reigning Entertainer – who doesn’t have a label – never got to perform this song, but it’s really special to her. And it’s about the craft of songwriting and storytelling, which connected with so many in our audience and led to that standing ovation. What else?
RK: We went from
Luke Combs doing a full-on performance with his band, to doing this very touching premiere of a duet with Ed Sheeran. And Lainey Wilson started with Jelly Roll in a beautiful, soaring performance, then flipped it on its head to really rock out in a way you’ve never seen.
I had the idea of having her work with a choreographer to bring that out in a way that doesn’t feel like choreography. We don’t dictate those things, but we offer suggestions and resources that hopefully elevate a career through moments that surprise and delight.
And, of course, Dolly, which has been in the works a long time. She’s premiering this new project and we gave her the full stage, 100 feet of flames and dancers for a memorable performance that contributes to her legacy.
PM: I was also really proud of Cody Johnson doing that moment for Willie Nelson, Keith Urban doing “Texas Time” and so many others. At this point, we’re so invested in all the performances they all feel like family. For the time [artists are] on this show, it’s our job to give them the resources and support they need to elevate to wherever they want to go.
RK: We wanted to really honor RAC’s legacy. The fact that we are responsible for the next generation of how this show evolves is not taken lightly. We do this for Nashville and for all of country music. We want them to feel like their voice is being heard when they watch because, ultimately, it’s not our show ... it’s theirs.

April 2023 PPM Scoreboard
The April 2023 PPM Book (3/30-4/26) saw Country dip slightly, with total shares off 0.6% from March to 363.4. That is a 2.0% increase from last April. There were plenty of records for the month though: WFUS/Tampa scored its largest share for the second straight month, while KKWF/ Seattle scored its first-ever No. 1 book, and is the first Country station to reach No. 1 in Seattle since 2008. WCOL/Columbus,
OH held on to the format’s largest share. Total cume grew 3.4% from March, to 24.1 million. KKBQ/Houston claimed the largest cume for the ninth consecutive month. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; a “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station that is a recent subscriber for which ratings were not currently available. Ranks are among subscribers.
