ACM Awards Reactions

The 58th Academy of Country Music Awards aired live from The Star in Frisco, TX last Thursday (5/11), and radio pros were among those watching. Here are their thoughts:

KBAY/San Jose APD/afternoon personality

Isaac “Brooks” Wenzel: “I watched from home with my roommate’s French Bulldog, Steve. It was much different from being at the show last year in Las Vegas! I was excited to see Dolly’s performance –I’m so intrigued by her upcoming rock album – but Lainey Wilson pretty much owned the show. The video packages they ran for the Entertainer of the Year nominees was helpful in building the anticipation and showcasing why each was deserving in different ways. I also appreciated the efforts to appeal to all audiences in the world of country music, but I wanted to hear Luke Combs sing ‘Fast Car.’ The production itself was great, and I’m glad they chose a smaller venue. My personal hot take is that streaming services are the way to go for awards shows moving forward. After being spoiled by the two-hour broadcasts of the ACMs, this past year’s CMAs felt more dragged out thanks to the commercial breaks. And yes, I’m aware of the irony of that statement coming from someone who works in commercial radio!”

Country’s Top Billing Stations

Revenue for Country stations rebounded from post-pandemic lows in 2022, but are still below the levels seen prior to Covid’s onslaught, according to data provided to Country Aircheck by BIA. Revenue for the top 10 stations was up 1.2% from 2021, though only four stations topped the $10m mark, down from five the previous year; in 2018 a dozen Country stations saw eight-digit revenue totals. iHeartMedia placed three stations in the top 10, with Audacy and Beasley each placing two.

(continued on page 9)

KVET/Austin afternoon personality Bob Pickett: “Am I the only one who thought it was too short? But there was one miss for me. Please show the names and station call letters of the ACM Radio Awards winners. It was nice that the ACM honored the past by mentioning previous winners in the categories, and it was cool seeing Waylon Jennings’ guitar back in the Lone Star state being put to great use by Keith Urban during the opening. I’m a true country boy, but I’m telling you, any time Ed Sheeran wants to sing on a country show, please let him. Hell, I’ll even do the paperwork to make him an honorary Texan! Finally, Garth and Dolly were the perfect pairing of two legends and Hall of Famers. Please sign them to a long-term deal!”

The top five stations remained unchanged from 2021, with Audacy KILT/Houston repeating as the format’s top biller with $16.6 million in local advertising revenue in 2022, up 3% from $16.1m in 2021 and $14.0m in 2020, though it is still below the $18.5m reported in 2018. Audacy WUSN/Chicago kept its second-place position with $14.0m, up 2% from 2021’s $13.7m, while Beasley WXTU/Philadelphia held on to third with just over $12.0m.

OFF THE RECORD

Chapel Hart’s Trea Swindle, Danica Hart and Devynn Hart go Off (The Record): Growing up, some of our favorites were Gretchen Wilson, Garth Brooks and Jennifer Nettles. Gretchen let us know it was okay to be authentically ourselves and stand in who we are as women in country music. Every country artist aspires to have Garth’s ability to connect with his fans and people, and we’ve followed Sugarland since our childhood.

TOP 10 BILLING COUNTRY STATIONS - 2022

CHAPEL HART

The biggest pro of being in a group with family members is the ability to be more honest and hold each other to higher level of accountability. The cons … we irritate each other. We know each other too well, so not much to hide. That can be a pro and a con, really.

Being on America’s Got Talent taught us to trust our gut, follow our hearts and never, ever give up. Television definitely also taught us a different level of patience.

As independent artists, we’ve had the opportunity to express our music our way, which we believe has broadened our fan base. That said, we still lack certain connections to make advances in our career — like success at mainstream Country radio — but hoping that changes soon.

On the Glory Days Tour, we’ve been able to connect with fans on a different level. We’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together – it’s been so inspiring. If you see that we are coming to your city, get tickets for the whole family because there is no experience like the Chapel Hart experience!

Some of our favorite tracks from Glory Days are:

“Fam Damily.” The inspiration behind this song is the large family we come from. Both the one we were born into and the one we get to choose. The writing and recording process really captured the fun and lighthearted feeling of a family reunion.

“Perfect For Me.” We wanted to shine the light on the “everyman.” From the first note, it gives you a “way out west” vibe and such a realness to the lyrics.

“Welcome to Fist City.” This is the one we are sending to Country radio. When the late icon Loretta Lynn asks you to write something for her, you have to deliver. With Loretta as an inspiration, this record embodies her 1968 hit “Fist City” with a modern twist making it relatable to today.

Several stations bill well above their weight class, most noticeably Curtis WQDR/Raleigh, which is the seventh biggest-biller in the format for the year with almost $10m in revenue, despite being in Market No. 37. Likewise, Hubbard WUBE/Cincinnati, which is Market 33, landed at No. 10 with $9.4m. Conversely, several major market stations are absent from the top 10, including two of the format’s largest cume-ing stations: KKBQ/Houston and KPLX/Dallas. See the complete top 10 above. –Chris Huff

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Corey Kent, Steve Hodges, Dennis Reese and the RCA promotion team on taking his debut release “Wild As Her” to No. 1. The song, which was a No. 8 hit in Canada last year for Tyler Joe Miller, makes Kent the fifth artist to take a debut release to No. 1 in the last six months, matching a record set in 1992. Songwriters are Brent Tyler, Kelly Archer and Morgan Wallen.

With a 12-spot jump to No. 30, Luke Combs’ cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1988 top 10 Pop hit “Fast Car” becomes the highest-charting track with unsolicited airplay since Luke Bryan’s “Games” reached No. 21 in 2015 (the track is being worked to Top 40). Interestingly, the only three other tracks to crack the top 30 without being released as official singles were also all covers of pop hits: Dwight Yoakam’s cover of Elvis Presley’s “Suspicous Minds” hit No. 30 in 1992; Sugarland and Little Big Town’s cover of Dream Academy’s “Life In A Northern Town” reached No. 29 in 2008 and Rascal Flatts’

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS

Memphis WGKX

Country Sign On Date and Owner: May 27, 1983, First Com

WGKX’s Jon Conlon was named ACM Personality of the Year three times: 1989, 1990 and 1993.

Notable alumni: Les Acree, Mark Billingsley, Jay Christian, Jon Conlon, Brian Driver, Ray Edwards, J.L. Fisk, Dana Harmon, Bill Jones, Tim Jones, Dave Kelly, Chip Miller, Greg Mozingo, Duane Shannon, Abby Summers, Lance Tidwell.

Ownership: Cumulus

“My message when I joined Kix was ‘don’t expect miracles overnight, just get a little better each day.’ Our then-competitor WOGY had made considerable ratings advances. The veteran air staff was highly motivated and committed to being everywhere. We used CHR jingles and a very contemporary on-air presentation for a heritage station. We built a loyal listener club with this new fad called the internet. WOGY flipped out of country in 2001 - that was a fun day for us. ‘Get a little better each day’ paid off. –Greg Mozingo, PD 1998-2002

”The first promotion on the station was a ‘three in a row’ guarantee. On our birthday, we’ll do ‘three in a row’ again with songs from each year we’ve been on the air. Over the years Kix 106 has become known as the concert station, and this summer will continue our free Kix On Beale summer concert series for the 19th year. Kix is the heritage station, and we are proud to be the Mid-South’s connection for ‘Today’s Best Country.’ We couldn’t do it without our listeners for sure! Here’s to 40 years strong, and 40 more to come!” –Chad Heritage, PD 2020-present

2006 cover of Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is A Highway” reached No. 18. Kudos to Ryan Dokke and the BMLGR crew on leading this week’s CA/MB Add Board with 85 adds for Riley Green’s “Different Round Here,” which features Luke Combs. This is Green’s largest add week ever and the largest for the label since Sept. 2020 when Florida Georgia Line’s “Long Live” scored 88.

ACM Awards Reactions

(continued from page 1)

KWEN/Tulsa Asst. Dir./Branding & Programming and afternoon personality Jenny Law: “Poor Garth looked uncomfortable as co-host and didn’t really get to talk a lot. I watched on the couch with my dog, Lainey Wilson, and wore one of the 500 Cody Johnson shirts I own. So, no surprise, I was most looking forward to Cody and Lainey performing – and Jelly Roll! Cole Swindell winning for both Single and Song of the Year were the most unexpected category wins to me, and I loved the speeches from Chris Stapleton and Lainey. The standouts for me ended up being Jelly and Miranda Lambert, but overall, the sound wasn’t great, and the show didn’t blow me away.”

KUZZ/Bakersfield PD/on-air talent Brent Michaels: “The sound and production were top-notch, and for the second consecutive year, limited commercials made the viewing experience second to none. Lainey Wilson’s quote, ‘If you’re a dreamer, you better be a do-er,’ will forever live in ACM lore. We’re within five years of Lainey winning Entertainer of the Year, as she has cemented herself as one of the biggest stars in our format. He may have been invited and declined, but I would have liked to see Zach Bryan perform. The only unexpected win for me was Chris Stapleton for Entertainer of the Year. There is no doubt he is an immense talent, but going in, I thought Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs had a more complete year – radio success, streaming success and headlining full stadiums. Dolly wheeling out a goat was classic, and there was a moment where Garth, Ed Sheeran and Luke Combs were all standing together on stage where I thought about the billions of records sold and fans made between them. Incredible.”

Silverfish Media Dir./Programming and ACM-winning Big D & Bubba personality Jessica “Carsen” Humphreville: “Garth and Dolly were adorable, and their chemistry was a delight to watch. I was also totally into rock ‘n’ roll Dolly! I wish Garth had performed, but that’s what I want every day. I saw some comments about Hardy’s performance and heard complaints that he should have stayed in the country lane, but he killed it. Put in your earplugs and rock on. The production was great from where I sat on my couch, and this year was tops, because we won! We didn’t go to the show, but I made the most of it; check out what I wore and how I celebrated here.”

WIRK/West Palm Beach morning host Tim Leary: “It was a bummer that Morgan Wallen couldn’t be there to perform and accept his award. Get better soon, Morgan! The standout was Luke Combs finishing ‘Love You Anyway,’ absolutely crushing it, then telling all of us to hold his beer as he walked out to join Ed Sheeran for ‘Life Goes On.’ War And Treaty also blew the roof off the Ford Center and made it look effortless, and Jordan Davis’ ‘Next Thing You Know’ made me go upstairs and hug my wife and kids and demand we start making memories immediately! Dolly joking about being both Garth and Trisha’s hall pass and Willie Nelson saying he loves all kinds of flowers and plants were highlights. I thought the production sounded great, but I did miss the way they did it in Vegas with cut-ins from different locations around the city. Overall, this generation of country artists is amazing, and the future of country music is going to be huge!” –Monta Vaden
