Monster Of The Midday: Katie Neal

Nearly three years after picking up internal syndication, Audacy Katie & Company host Katie Neal can be heard on 26 stations, including six outside the company, and is quite possibly the most-heard personality on Country radio. She tells Country Aircheck about the evolution of her show and plans for continued expansion.

Neal joined then-Cumulus Hot AC WPLJ/New York in 2013, not as an on-air talent, but as an Account Exec. “My sales background actually helps me understand the importance of localization and creating content that can generate revenue,” says Neal. She had previously spent a year on-air in Bloomington, IL and handled some weekend and swing shifts for then-Country clustermate WNSH before being named to middays full-time in 2017 (CAT 2/8/17). “Being in New York, when people came to town in the industry, it was for a concert or another specific reason to visit us,” remarks Neal. “Now that I’ve been in Nashville for a couple years, I understand how different it is to live and work in the midst of the industry every day. I’m enjoying it so much!”

Then-Entercom began internally syndicating Neal in 2020 (CAT 9/11/20), and Katie & Company picked up an external syndication partnership with United Stations last October (CAT 10/17/22). “We are continuing to grow quietly, at an organic pace, and I don’t have any specific threshold goals for affiliate count,” admits Neal. Audacy VP Programming/Country Format Captain Tim Roberts tells Country Aircheck, “[Katie’s] reach just among Audacy alone is 2,752,700, persons 12+.” Because the show’s hours vary by market, precise audience figures are difficult to ascertain, but Country Aircheck’s analysis of PPM ratings alone puts its 6+ cume near 2 million, well above PPM cume leaders in other dayparts.

To facilitate continued growth, Neal recently added Exec. Prod. Brody Smith (CAT 4/5). “Brody made the move to Nashville quickly, and he has been drinking from a fire hose since,” Neal admits. “He’s coming up to speed on the technical side, and he has been a fantastic help with audio editing, production and show prep.” She says their daily routine begins with show prep at 8:30am CT before hitting the studio at 10am CT. “We record (continued on page 5)

Route, Route, Route For The Home Team

WFMS/Indianapolis MD/ afternoon personality Matt Malone offers his take on the opening weekend of Thomas Rhett’s Home Team Tour: Indianapolis played host to the third stop of the Home Team Tour, bringing Rhett, Nate Smith and Cole Swindell to the home of the Indiana Pacers, Gainbridge Fieldhouse. For all of the times Thomas has played Indy, this

was his first time at the venue, and he about blew the roof off!

Nate opened the show with his incredibly powerful vocals and capped off the set with a crowd sing-along of his first No. 1, “Whiskey On You.” I even had a conversation with some folks who came just to see Nate. This guy is a star.

When it came to getting Cole onstage, the fans were so anxious they were almost chanting his name … actually, the row behind me was literally chanting his name. Hit after hit, he had everyone in the palm of his hand playing early hits like “Chillin’ It” and “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight,” current single “Drinkaby” and everything in between. Lainey Wilson joined to sing “Never Say Never” via the jumbo screens. The biggest song of his set, “She Had Me At Heads Carolina,” truly was a karaoke session for the whole crowd.

We had the opportunity to hang with the artists before they got onstage, and when it was our time with TR, he talked about how the first two stops had some notes on things they wanted to tweak and perfect, but for our show, there were no notes. We were primed for the best experience the tour could bring so far.

There were non-stop hits straight out of the gate with him wearing an Indianapolis-embroidered jacket — symbolic for the name of the tour, of course — while playing drums and leading right into “Vacation.” The crowd was almost singing louder than he was, and he had phenomenal  crowd engagement doing an eras-type medley of other timeless hits from Elvis, the Rolling Stones, Matchbox 20 and more.

Some of the biggest reaction moments came from the pictures of his family on the jumbo screens, which were absolutely adorable. The lighting rigs moving throughout the show, the pyro and the confetti cannons exploding tissue paper into the sky really made the Home Team Tour a mustsee experience. We had people who traveled all the way from California just to be at this show. Honestly, by the time it was done, I wanted them to start it all over again … that’s how much fun I had and how much fun I saw the crowd having. It was one big Thomas Rhett party!

Kudos to Josh Easler and the Records Nashville crew on scoring 58 adds for “If I Die Young (Pt. 2),” the debut solo release by Kimberly Perry. The track also debuts at No. 49 this week, returning Perry to the chart for the first time in more than six years. The song is a sequel to The Band Perry’s first No. 1 in 2010, and is the first sequel song to chart since “A Country Boy Can Survive (Y2K Version),” which landed at the end of 1999 as Chad Brock and Hank Williams Jr.’s update on the latter’s 1982 hit.

Also, due to technical issues during the week, airplay for WDRM/ Huntsville was temporarily removed from the panel, but will return next week.

a day ahead, meaning we are cutting Tuesday’s show on Monday,” Neal explains. “By the time we cut the show, edit it down and do our custom liners and commercial production for the day, we are wrapping the workday around 4:30pm CT.” The pair currently works out of the Audio Productions building on Music Row while they await completion of Audacy’s home studio inside Hard Rock Café on Lower Broadway in Downtown Nashville.

“We are in the process of getting ready for ACM Awards week, and CMA Fest will follow soon after,” Neal notes. “Brody and I are finding our stride, and in the past six months, I’ve worked with a talent coach to help me stretch myself on-air, as well.” She credits that coach, Mike Peterson, with helping her add in stories about her home life and adapt to being a syndicated talent. “In the beginning, I had to learn not to take feedback so personally as I was transitioning from having one PD to having twodozen PDs,” she quips. “But I have developed relationships with local programmers and brand managers in each market, and I’ve found that as those relationships grow, I’m becoming more comfortable with the mutual trust we are building.”

She continues, “Any time you add a new market, it takes six months to a year before listeners start echoing back your content to you. I’m starting to hear one of my tag lines, ‘Katie Neal is sports,’ said back to me, which makes me laugh.” As the affiliate count rises, Neal is keeping her eye on creating content that remains true to her personal brand. “While it would be easy for me to say I hope for a certain number of affiliates, or I’m looking for a shelf full of trophies, I’d liken it more to artists working on a second or third album,” Neal admits. “As long as I’m proud of the content I’m putting out, and as long as it speaks to my truth, I’ll be happy. And that’s the most admirable goal I can hold as we continue to grow Katie & Company.”
