Stop & Frisco: ACM Week Preview

As the Academy of Country Music prepares to return to Texas for the first time in eight years, ACM CEO & ACM Awards Exec. Prod. Damon Whiteside gives Country Aircheck a lay of the land for the 58th ACM Awards week in Frisco, TX.

“We had worked with the Dallas Cowboys organization for our 50th anniversary, and I think both parties were eager for an opportunity to work together again,” Whiteside says of the move to the Cowboys’ Ford Center in The Star. “The great thing about Frisco is it’s so close to Dallas, but still small enough that when we come to town, everyone will know the ACMs have arrived. We will absolutely take over that community.” He notes the facility is approximately 30 minutes from both major airports in the Dallas area, making it equally convenient no matter an attendee’s preferred air carrier.

The awards show will be held at Ford Center, the 12,000-seat indoor state-of-the-art stadium facility that is part of the 91-acre development called The Star. Also among the 91 acres are an Omni Hotel, the Dallas Cowboys Rings Of Honor Walk and multiple retail and restaurant spaces. Leading up to Thursday’s show is the ACM Country Kickoff – a free fan festival of performances, beer garden and sponsor activations directly in front of the ACM Awards venue Tuesday (5/9) and Wednesday (5/10) from 3-10pm CT. Country Music Hall of Famer Dolly Parton, who will host with fellow HoFer Garth Brooks, is offering her own festival activation for fans on site. “We can’t wait to see what she creates for the attendees,” Whiteside said.

“The experience for the industry will be stellar,” says Whiteside. “Not only is the venue itself the right scope and scale for us, but it’s going to be a great fan experience, as well. This is a unique place to take the show, and when you’re there in the middle of The District, we have lodging for core staff, industry and artists among vendor spaces and other entertainment options. The Star is going to be extraordinarily easy to navigate.”

Media Row will be housed in the adjoining Omni Hotel, with stations positioned in a ballroom; Ellen Appleton returns to produce the event. “Covid protocols have relaxed significantly since our first year back (continued on page 8)

Q1 Drivetime Leaders

Following the release of the March Nielsen PPM monthlies, Country Aircheck has analyzed Q1 numbers to compile the stations with the leading cumes and shares in morning and afternoon drive. Quarterly averages eliminate the wobbles that can be present at a daypart level on a month-to-month basis. All figures are Persons 6+.

Mornings: The Bobby Bones Show retains its place atop the cume rankings, despite the loss of one affiliate (KNUC/Seattle) and a loss of more than 102,000 listeners overall. KKBQ/Houston’s recently revamped 93Q Morning Show with Andy Riggs, Erica Rico and Katelyn Maida is the largest cumeing single station show with 331,000, followed by WUSN/ Chicago’s Melissa McGurren and Austin Huff with 286,700 weekly listeners. Two other Texas shows round out the top five: KILT/Houston’s Morning Bullpen and KSCS/Dallas’ Hawkeye In The Morning

An 8.9 to 10.7 jump from last quarter puts KSOP/Salt Lake City’s Dave and Deb atop the share ranker for the first time. They unseat WQIK/ Jacksonville’s Big Show with Robbie & John, which lands in second, just

OFF THE RECORD

KBAY/San Jose PD Bo Matthews goes Off (The Record):

Growing up in Youngstown, OH, I remember News Talk WKBN-AM/ FM broadcasting from their cool bus at a local store. I got to tour that as a young kid, and it was so exciting.

My dad lives in Sarasota, which is where I spent my summers and became obsessed with [Top 40 WFLZ/Tampa], the Power Pig. I would record Bubba The Love Sponge, bring the tapes home and show all my friends what this guy was doing on the radio. I will never forget the music bed he used and how he would let it play ... and play ... before he even mentioned a word. It was entertainment.

My first radio job was working for WNCD-WNIO/Niles, OH. I would file commercial dubs, run the board and load the “Sounds of Sinatra” into a very early version of automation. Eventually, I just said yes enough to parlay it into a full-time gig while still attending Youngstown State.

BO MATTHEWS

The stations I worked for eventually turned into iHeart. I learned from amazing minds like Marc Chase, Dom Theodore, Kevin Metheny and Keith Abrams. Currently, I get to learn from Phil Becker every day.

Don’t turn into that guy who is obsessed with the way things were, or you will absolutely be left behind. I love learning – that’s a necessity with any job. When something new arrives, being a Debbie Downer will help no one. How can we adapt and get better?

One year into programming Country, I love it. This format has huge stars. Rock certainly isn’t creating many these days. CHR has a challenge creating new arena-level artists because the music is very disposable. Other formats have a lot of “acts,” but not many “artists.” Morgan, Luke, Kane, Lainey – those are artists. Country is having a real moment, and I am happy to be a part of it.

Consumption and streaming, in my opinion, are very different for the genre on the record and radio sides. For example, I question when I see a huge streaming record happening in the format, but Country radio isn’t embracing it, because the label isn’t promoting it. That could be a missed opportunity. We have more data points than ever before and, in many cases, we have the answers to the test. We also know , sooner rather than later, if a record is working. From the perspective of an outsider who is now on the inside, everything moves so slowly. With other formats, if a song isn’t working, it doesn’t last very long. That doesn’t mean that we don’t like the artist; just bring something different.

Many of these No. 1 records disappear the week after getting there? This has been very different from other formats and new to me. It’s something I continue to learn about and question whether or not “vanity” No. 1s are good for all. I appreciate the business and artists getting pushed to collect accolades, but it’s clear to me that we must balance to make sure this isn’t counterproductive to collecting listeners. The artist/programmer relationship is interesting and unique. No question, country provides much better access to its stars. We had custom liners cut by Morgan Wallen for a weekend promotion, and that’s amazing and appreciated. I feel a much bigger appreciation for radio from country artists. It’s also kind of amusing to see programmers get caught up in these relationships. Yes, I see you posting a picture with _____ acting like you are besties.

I am interested in learning more about the imbalance of women on our playlists, and committed to being a part of the solution. Coming from Pop and Hot AC, the imbalance is the opposite way. I hear women country artists complaining that radio doesn’t support women. How is the format indexing vs the % of signed women artists? We are doing our part with Bay Country, recently launching the weekly one-hour feature She’s Country spotlighting women. We are getting amazing feedback.

I am absolutely obsessed with the new Brothers Osborne, everything from Lainey Wilson, Ian Munsick’s new album and new music from Conner Smith. How was “Take It Slow” not a No. 1?

WUSN/Chicago’s Scotty Kay, who slips to third. The remainder of the top five is filled out by KPLX/Dallas’ Jason Pullman and KKGO/ Los Angeles’ Christine Martindale

WCOL/Columbus’ Brandon “Boxer”

Nasby adds a full share from last quarter to lead afternoon drive for the format in terms of share, with a 10.4. Scot “Froggy” Langley keeps WQIK/ Jacksonville in second place with an even eight share, just ahead of WMIL/Milwaukee’s Shanna “Quinn” Cudeck Zakk Slater on WWKA/Orlando and Charlie & Debbie from WSOC/Charlotte, who finish out the top five. Congratulations to Hardy, Stacy Blythe, Ali Matkosky, the Big Loud promotion team, and Lainey Wilson, Carson James, Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines, Scotty O’Brien and the Broken Bow promotion team on taking “Wait In The Truck” to No. 1. This is Hardy’s third and Wilson’s fourth visit to the top. Wilson also ties the monitored-era record for weeks between No. 1s, as she is just three weeks removed from a No. 1 with “Heart Like A Truck.” That matches Mitchell Tenpenny’s three week gap last summer between “Truth About You” and his collaboration with Chris Young, “At The End Of A Bar.” Songwriters are Hunter Phelps, Jordan Schmidt, Renee Blair and Michael Hardy.

Wilson also sets the all-time record for shortest span between No. 1 appearances for a female artist, eclipsing the record held for 40 years by Crystal Gayle, whose “Til I Gain Control Again” hit No. 1 in February 1983 just eight weeks after her No. 1 duet with Eddie Rabbitt, “You And I,” fell out of the spot.

Lainey Wilson and Hardy

While trucks and country music go hand in hand, “Wait In The Truck” becomes only the fifth No. 1 to include “truck” in the title, following “Heart Like A Truck,” Dylan Scott ’s “New Truck” from last year, 2013’s “I Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice and 2012’s “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck” by Kip Moore

With songs at Nos. 10 and 8 this week, Morgan Wallen becomes the first artist to have two solo releases in the top 10 since Jan. 9, 2004, when Toby Keith’s “American Soldier” moved up to No. 7 and his sixweek No. 1, “I Love This Bar,” slid down to No. 4. To find two solo releases from the same artist simultaneously climbing in the Top 10, you have to go back to May 19, 1978, when Willie Nelson’s “Georgia On My Mind” sat at No. 3, while six spots below it was “If You Can Touch Her At All,” a solo performance by Nelson from the collaborative Waylon & Willie album.

Kudos to Lauren “LT” Thomas and the Columbia crew on racking up 30 additional adds for Luke Combs’ “Love You Anyway.” Of Combs’ 13 songs to top the CA/MB Add Board, it becomes the fifth to lead for multiple weeks.

from the pandemic,” says Whiteside. “We are also excited to welcome DSPs and additional media outlets to our radio row for the first time, and we look forward to creating a space where artists and outlets alike can benefit from the opportunity to engage.” ACM Radio Awards winners will be celebrated Wednesday (5/10) from 4-6pm at The Monarch Stag in The District at The Star.

The nearby Topgolf facility in The Colony – the company’s headquarters – will host the Topgolf Tee-Off and Rock On Fundraiser benefitting ACM Lifting Lives. The annual Tee-Off will see industry colleagues compete in a Topgolf tournament before the green is flipped for a stage hosting the concert featuring Morgan Wallen, Hardy, Lainey Wilson, Ernest and Bailey Zimmerman. “The concert has allowed us to add a more engaging fan experience,” explains Whiteside. “The facility has tested this template before, and we are looking forward to seeing the green filled with approximately 3,000 country music fans. I’m pretty confident this will set a record for fundraising for Lifting Lives.” PGA headquarters are also located nearby, with a full-scale PGA golf course onsite for those looking to get in 18 holes.

For industry attendees, a Songs & Stories Brunch will take place in partnership with The Bluebird Café on Wednesday morning (5/10) at the new Omni PGA Hotel, opening the same week. The brunch will

The ACM is also offering discounts for academy members to take advantage of restaurant and retail locations throughout The Star District. “There are dozens of restaurants and bars in The District, and ACM members will be given access to the discount codes for those locations for the week, with options ranging from casual to high-end,” Whiteside states.

For media guests, a traditional backstage press room will be replaced by a photo room and a one-on-one winners’ walk room, where approximately 10 outlets will have the opportunity to speak to winners and

15 photographers will gather images of winners with their trophies. The preshow red carpet returns with a one-hour lead-up to the show streamed via Amazon Prime Video

Covid protocols for those interacting with artists throughout the week will be distributed to appropriate parties as needed, with an ACM team member confirming, “Anyone who will be in direct contact with artists will be required to be tested – including those at Media Row and on the red carpet.” Additional ancillary events will include a pre-show reception and an official after-party for credentialed attendees. March 2023 PPM Scoreboard

The March 2023 PPM Book (3/2-3/29) saw Country grow to its best overall performance since August 2020. Total shares were up 1.6% from February to 365.6; that’s a 6.0% increase from last March. Two stations, WFUS/Tampa and KKWF/ Seattle, set all-time record high shares, the latter being buoyed by the defection of its crosstown competitor. WCOL/Columbus, OH regained the format lead for the first time since the Holiday book. Total cume also continued to grow, up

February to 23.3 million. That’s a 5.7% increase compared to a year ago. KKBQ/Houston claimed the largest cume for the eighth consecutive month, its weekly reach of 998,400 is the largest cume for any Country station since February 2020. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; a “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station that is a recent subscriber for which ratings were not currently available.
