Luke + Luke: Eight Is Enough
Country Aircheck’s semi-annual Power Gold Top 100 continues to show churn, as outside of Lee Brice repeating at No. 1 with “One Of Them Girls,” only two other songs (“Body Like A Back Road” and “Wagon Wheel”) hold in the top 10. Eight titles debut, with “Just The Way” by Parmalee feat. Blanco Brown and Thomas Rhett’s “What’s Your Country Song” both enjoying top 10 debuts.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the list is the power of one name: Luke. As in Bryan and Combs, who combine for 16 titles, leading all artists with eight titles each; Bryan led last fall’s list with seven titles. Jason Aldean and Blake Shelton each have six, while Florida Georgia Line rounds out the top five with five. Overall, the March 2023 PG100 is comprised of 34 male artists with 75 songs, six groups with 10 songs and five women with seven songs.
The March 2023 Power Gold Top 100 is compiled from Mediabase 24/7 and music airplay information from the Country Aircheck/ Mediabase reporting panel for the week ending March 11, 2023. Here’s the Top 10:
1. Lee Brice/One Of Them Girls
2. Gabby Barrett/I Hope
3. Sam Hunt/Body Like A Back Road
4. Darius Rucker/Wagon Wheel
5. Zac Brown Band/Chicken Fried
6. Blake Shelton/Honey Bee
7. Parmalee feat. Blanco Brown/Just The Way*
8. Florida Georgia Line/Cruise
9. Maren Morris/The Bones
10. Thomas Rhett/What’s Your Country Song*
* indicates a debut Country Aircheck once again broke out the PG100 along ownership lines (see chart pg. 8), and while there is much divergence between how songs rank among different groups, there is unanimity at the top as “One Of Them Girls” is the most-played gold title among two of the three largest owners and fourth with the other. Divergence increases further down the rankings, with Rhett’s “What’s Your Country Song” in the top five among two groups, but only 86th among iHeart stations. Three titles, “Eyes On You,” “Girl Like You” and “Wagon Wheel” fail to even make the top 100 at Cumulus.

HoF: Bring Their Flowers Now
“This isn’t just an honor given to people who have a lot of hits – if it were, I don’t think I’d be in here,” Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill tells Country Aircheck. “This is a recognition of an overall body of work and the impact that work has on the industry as a whole.”
Gill hosted this morning’s (4/3) press conference announcing 2023 Country Music Hall of Fame inductees Bob McDill (Songwriter), Tanya Tucker (Veterans Era Artist) and Patty Loveless (Modern Era Artist). Loveless says, “Having to keep it a secret for three weeks was difficult, and just before we walked out to the podium to be announced, my manager gave me the go-ahead to send a link with the news to a few family members. This is the most special, unexpected, breathtaking honor, and now the work will begin on compiling the memories I’ve stashed away so I can give them to the Hall for an exhibit!”

McDill, who will also celebrate a birthday tomorrow, says he only told “my sweetheart, and I know she can keep her mouth closed.” He’s most excited to share the news with his daughter, who he quips should be getting a short email about it this afternoon. As for culling down a career of songwriting success into three highlights for the Medallion Ceremony later this Fall, McDill teases, “Well, one of my songs has something like 43 million views on YouTube, so I guess that one will have to make the cut.”
Likewise, Tucker may have difficulty narrowing down the options, including for hair and wardrobe. Currently rocking blue highlights, Tucker spent part of the afternoon celebrating as only she could: riding an award-winning black stallion from the CMHoF to the Ryman Auditorium. “I spent the first part of my career being told something like this would never happen, then I spent the past few years being told its long overdue, so I figure I might as well celebrate,” says Tucker. “And I’m so lucky to be going in while I’m alive and can enjoy it. I just hope I get some input on the plaque, because I don’t want to be sculpted in bronze and then hate it forever!” The formal induction will take place this fall; full bios here

OFF THE RECORD
Warner/WEA’s Morgan Evans goes Off The Record:
I wrote “Over For You” while struggling through a sudden and public divorce. After I played it live for the first time, the reaction from fans and the internet kind of made that decision for me. Honestly, I’m not sure if this song would have come out had the fans not reacted so positively.
When I stepped onto the CMC Rock QLD stage to perform for 25,000 people, it was during a brutal time in my life. I found a lot of clarity on stage that night. I grew up playing that festival, and headlining it in September felt like coming home.
Fans have really connected with the song. There are so many specific stories they’ve shared with me, and I still get sent a bunch of them each day. I read and appreciate every one. Going through a breakup like that can be disorienting. Being able to distill that feeling down to the simple language in this song helped ground me, and I’m glad to see it helping others in the same way.
The other thing is the inherent loneliness that comes along with a breakup like that. Sometimes it just helps to know you’re not the only one going through it. It really means the world to me to see the way this song has become a part of other people’s lives. Writing this song was a selfish pursuit of clarity, and it has already had a positive effect far beyond any expectations I had for it.
All I ever wanted to do was be “in a band,” and I really, really missed it when it was just me and the loop pedal. This is the best band I’ve ever been in, and I’ve never had so much fun playing music in my life!
Australia is geographically the same size as the U.S., but there are only 26 million people there, so there’s a lot of country. So many of the ideals, stories and ways of life are identical. The best way to describe it to Americans is to liken it to Texas. We have our own Aussie country music, which we are very proud of, but we also love and completely relate to a lot of the music coming out of Nashville, too. Looking towards the future, I’ve got some songs for the summer coming next month that I’m super stoked about it!

(continued from page 1)
Six songs have appeared on each of the 19 PG100s since it became a regular feature in 2009: Dierks Bentley’s “What Was I Thinkin’,” Kenny Chesney’s “I Go Back,” Billy Currington’s “Good Directions,” Rascal Flatts’ “Life Is A Highway,” Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats” and Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You.” The latter also holds the distinction as the oldest release on the list, now 20 years past its chart peak. Honorable mention goes to Darius Rucker’s “Wagon Wheel,” the indefatigable song has finished in the top four in all twelve lists since it became eligible in 2015. Notably absent on this list is Tim McGraw – this is the first PG100 without a single title from McGraw.
