Six Packs: 2020 Fantasy Label Draft

It has been eight years since Country Aircheck launched the annual Fantasy Label Draft and, as other sports struggle with limiting or prohibiting attendance, all are welcomed to this – the greatest show on mirth. This year’s group of high-stakes radio gamblers, putting Jason Addams (c) with team name muses Lyndsay Church (l) and their good names on the Annie Sandor (r) line to draft their own artist and label exec roster are WKCQ/Saginaw, MI’s Jason Addams; WNCB/ Raleigh’s Carson Blackley; WGAR/Cleveland’s Carletta Blake; KIYK & KCIN/St. George, UT’s Aaronee Cottam; KNCI/ Sacramento’s Joey Tack; Carson Blackley Carletta Blake and WFMS/Indianapolis’ Isaac “Brooks” Wenzel. Before the eighth season can officially kick off, a season seven champion must be crowned. Country Aircheck’s quarterly print missive/home decor piece (turned sideways it makes a great placemat) returns Friday after a June hiatus. Despite a summer of postponements ACM RADIO TIM WINNERS and cancellations, the September issue finds ROBERTS NEW MUSIC 31 quite a bit of optimism. PREVIEW 5! Trophy Life: While they won’t get to gather in Nashville next week for the audience-free 55th Academy of Country Music Awards, radio winners share singular stories that reflect the continuing importance and appeal of radio. Our commitment to the Navy is high … we’re a Navy town.” On the other end were several stories highlighting radio’s pure entertainment value, as when WFLS/Fredricksburg, VA’s Jessica Cash decided to sing “Happy Birthday” to Lady A’s Dave Haywood. “It really wasn’t good,” her co-host Steve Waters says. “I jump in and say, ‘Okay, now give her your critique, and don’t hold back. Go all American Idol on her.’ Dave responds with a spot-on perfect Luke Bryan-voiced critique. We’re thinking it’s just a short joke, but Dave, Charles and Hillary kept it alive, [and Jessica] celebrated that all year long as a running gag.” In sum, the stories ACM Radio Winners tell are reflective of radio at its best. As National Personality Bobby Bones says, “Moving audiences in responsible ways – radio still doesn’t get the credit it deserves for being able to do that.” Learning Swerve: Speaking of responsible, the readervoted Power 31 finds industry leaders almost single-minded in their regard for the industry’s adaptability and resilience. “We’ve gone from being a business devasted by technology (maybe even technology resistant) to one that invents and thrives on it,” says Warner Music Nashville Chairman/CEO John Esposito. “Nothing compares to personal collaboration and live performance – and we’re looking forward to getting back to those – but I’ve learned we not only have the fighting spirit, but we also have the followthrough.” Beyond what they’ve discovered about the business and their teams, they’ve learned a few things about themselves, as Sony VP/National Promotion Lauren Thomas explains. “Outside the importance of a mute button on video calls, I’ve learned how to do simple, silly stuff like French-braid my hair as a 35-year-old woman. And I am strangely proud of it.” Opportunity Knocks: Also in the issue, an extensive preview of upcoming new music and artists, as well as a look at the eyesand-ears approach that underlies Big Loud Records’ successful first five years. “There’s no option to do less than crazy,” says VP/ Promotion Stacy Blythe of her team’s commitment to the music and artists the company has developed. “Yes, it’s going to take a lot of extra time and energy, and of course I’m going to do it. We don’t take a lot for granted.” Finally, Entercom Country Format Captain Tim Roberts sees opportunity in the year’s challenges in The Interview: “There’s great hope for people who are in this industry. If you’re creative, there are still so many avenues for that. Be adaptable, be creative, keep smiling and work hard.”

Dallas-based radio vets Gary Spurgeon and Mark McCray have teamed to launch Clear Media Network, a 24/7 music format radio network targeted to the needs of independent radio owners and operators in Country, AC and Adult R&B formats. Details here. AHP Records’ Steve Emley has joined Project C.U.R.E.’s Nashville Ambassador Board. The organization is the world’s largest distributor of donated medical relief. The Recording Academy has created the Black Music Collective (BMC), a group of prominent Black music creators and professionals who share the common goal of amplifying Black voices within the Academy and the music community. A BMC leadership committee will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Legacy is selling Country KZTL/Paxton-North Platte, NE to Eagle for $800,000 plus an LMA before closing in a deal that also includes Rock KRNP. Jonathan L. Smith’s Choice Radio Corporation is assigning Country WTBK/Manchester, KY to creditor Manchester Communications, Inc. after defaulting on an agreement to pay off a judgement for $191,637.21 in debt. Manchester is selling the station to Karen Moses’ Strategic Impact Marketing Consulting Corporation for $138,541.71 in a promissory note. Nashville-based Visual Image Marketing is celebrating 20 years of providing music video promotion and marketing services to independent country and Americana artists. Martina McBride will join Alabama for group’s 50th Anniversary Tour shows in Nashville July 2-3.

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of Wide Open/ Records/Arista’s Matt Stell: The biggest way the pandemic has affected my daily life is that I’ve spent more time at home in the past months than I ever have. In some ways, it’s nice … sleeping in my own bed is cool, and my grass gets mowed way more frequently than it used to. But I miss the road, the band and crew, truck stops in the middle of the night, crowds of people having fun, making new friends, seeing the country, etc. I even miss 4am lobby calls to catch a turbulent flight and not knowing where I’m going ’til I land there! My daily routine begins with coffee. No matter what I have to do, I want to make sure I’m doing it with plenty of caffeinated energy. I usually try to write a song, exercise and spend some time outside every day — or at least most days. I also like to get on the golf course as often as I can. It’s a great time for that, because golf lends itself to social distancing pretty well. I’m living solo, but I honestly haven’t minded the solitude. I have missed seeing my family, though. That’s probably been one of the hardest parts.

Quarantine has enhanced my creativity purely because it’s provided me with time I wouldn’t otherwise have. Normally, I would be neck deep in touring right now. Since I can’t get out and play music, a lot of that energy has been focused on writing. Going live on social media has been a blessing. This pandemic would have been so much worse 20, 30-plus years ago. Technology has made it more manageable. It’s great to get to go live, play music and interact with fans. I’m bingeing Alone on the History Channel. It’s a survival show, and I love it. Reminds me of Hatchet and Brian’s Winter, which were my favorite books growing up (along with Dear Mr. Henshaw). My go-to snack is Family Size. It comes in all kinds of flavors like Oreos, M&Ms, Marie Callender’s Chicken Pot Pies, Fruit Loops, etc. The silver lining of all this, for me, is the time I’ve had to be creative. I’ve written and finished a lot of songs I’m really proud of, and I can’t wait to share ‘em.

Six Packs: 2020 Fantasy Label Draft (continued from page 1) Second place went to the aforementioned Roberts, whose league MVP pick of Luke Combs netted him 299 of his total 580 points. Relive the 2019 draft here. (Ed. Note: The league’s newly instituted points system is based on chart position and award wins for artists, and chart success and most-added wins for label personnel.) Jock Jams: Here’s how the game is played: Each team owner selects six players – Male, Female, Duo/Group and Rookie artist, as well as a Label President and VP/Promotion. Draft order for the six-round snaking draft was based upon who replied first to the invitation, and each owner is allowed to select players for their slots in any order they see fit. Within the rules, a “Rookie” is defined as any artist who has never had a No. 1 as an artist, and label execs may be anyone the team owners see fit. In draft order, the owners also selected team names, as seen on page 8. Draft strategies varied. Some owners were simply focused on remembering what time the draft started – ahem, Addams – while others put pen to paper for hardcore data analysis prior to the picks. “In fantasy football, a common drafting term that’s used is ‘do the opposite,’” explains Wenzel. “It seemed like other owners would pick Male and Female artists early, so I addressed other needs and rolled the dice to see what would fall to me later. With Luke Bryan in the third round and Kelsea Ballerini in the sixth, it’s safe to say I’m pleased with the results.” Says Blackley, “Both of my early strategies and draft prep picks fell to other owners in the first round, so I made the decision to go with Thomas Rhett as my first pick, because I just finished his wife’s book. I know – what a strategy – but TR is beyond talented and has God in his corner, so who can beat that?!”

Put Me In Coach: As with last year, the first pick in round one was Combs, followed by Dan + Shay, Rhett, Carrie Underwood, Morgan Wallen and Tenille Townes. A few fan favorites went undrafted. “I was shocked that [WMN Chairman/CEO John] Esposito wasn’t picked,” notes Tack. “Definitely some points left on the board with that one.” Addams, however, feels great about the selections. “This was harder than I thought, but I came out triumphant,” he asserts. “Hang on, I’ve just been told I drastically misunderstood how the game was played, and I have indeed not won. Well, my mama still loves me, and that’s what counts. Hang on, I’m getting another message in my earpiece ... not cool, Mom.” Despite Addams’ mama drama, overall tensions and smack talk were low this year, as most owners were just thrilled to be interacting with other humans. Penalties were shockingly few. Tack made the grave mistake of selecting a player previously taken, and what would normally result in The Friedman Rule (details here) was ironically unnecessary as Tack then selected David Friedman of his own free will. A bold strategy; let’s see if it pays off. Meanwhile, Wenzel struggled with false starts as he continually forgot to “reply-all” to the draft thread. “I was going to pick a sleeper, but I think I’m the one who needs a nap,” he explained. A single delay of game was credited to Blake, who says she was on a call. An official Commish review found that Blake was, indeed, on a call, though the time was spent chatting with Tack; the jury is still out as to whether the two were

WI TH A day in the self-isolated life of Alpha KUPL/Portland APD/MD/afternoon personality Danny Dwyer: The pandemic has taken a toll on all of us, and we were unfortunately hit hard and lost colleagues to furlough, which has led to me doing three times more work on a daily basis. I don’t mind the extra work, but I do miss my coworkers. Every day is like that movie Groundhog Day. I’m up by 8am PT to make sure the station is on time and not missing any spots or tracks, then I do show prep for around 45 minutes. I track my show from my living room, front yard, back patio or upstairs den, then I do afternoon calls in my shorts or sweats in my recliner. I make sure our websites are up to date with local news and country music content, and I add any trending stories. I finish my workday around 7pm PT. My wife and I are both working from home now after my trip to the hospital (CAT 7/6), but prior to that, we had a good routine down where I would spend Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the station, and she would work at her office Tuesday and Thursday. We managed to stay out of each other’s way on that schedule, but now that I’m unable to drive, we are sitting side-by-side taking calls and conducting business with two teens, two cats and a dog in the house. We have an agreement that when I need to track my show, she makes calls between my breaks. I’m working from home and will go back to the studio once a week beginning in mid-September. There, I’ll make sure we have

all our ducks in a row going into weekends and ensure our syndicated programming is correct and all imaging pieces are in place. I’ve started to learn to play guitar, and I’ve been cooking, grilling and gardening. And, yes, I talk to my plants. I find myself happiest when I can get time to do my own DIY projects. That helps me keep my mind off the everyday craziness. On July 4, though, that took an unfortunate turn, and now I’m extremely grateful to be alive and not paralyzed. I enjoy evening walks with my wife and getting more exercise. My new outlook on life is, “If it’s not life-threatening, then it can wait until tomorrow.” I also truly believe in the power of prayer. We haven’t been able to be onsite or even live on-air always. We can jump in the studio to take calls and touch base with our P1s, but remotes with clients have all gone away, and we are doing them virtually due to state and local laws. We are using our digital platforms to connect with listeners and keep them informed and up to speed on all things country music, events and community. I have personally been visiting with family and friends from a distance just to have some normalcy in my life.

Wenzel earned the nod for best smack talk in a relatively venom-free year, despite his inability to remember to reply-all. “Honestly, we were all pretty lame,” says Blackley. “The nice guys still exist!” Other reasons for tame chatter were also explored. “I don’t need to say anything when I have the perfect list,” explains Blake. Adds Wenzel, “My squad is too busy recording hits and writing acceptance speeches to talk right now.” Opinions on best team were harder to pin down. “Letta has her eye on the trophy and her head in the game, and she tried to trip us up with some faux strategy,” says Cottam. “But I ate a Totino’s 3-Meat Party Pizza and drank several strong ginger beers today, so ... we are the champions, my friend.” Tack also thinks his team will bring a win, citing Combs, Miranda Lambert and Friedman as his secret weapons. “And, I did a quick Mediabase scan to see which artists are close to hitting No. 1 and did long-division to determine which label group was going to bring me the highest ROI.” Will math, method or madness bring a win? Points begin accumulating this week, and a winner will be declared this time next year. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s get ready to rumble. –Monta Vaden CAC

August 2020 PPM Scoreboard Country radio shares were down 15.4 points (4.03%) compared to last month. Of the 85 stations listed, 26 saw share increases, 48 decreased and 11 were flat month-to-month. Overall cume was down 359,800 (1.37%) compared to last month. The cume leader was Cumulus’ KPLX/Dallas with 892,900. Entercom’s WNSH/New York was second with 776,000. Versus August 2019 PPMs, radio shares were down 3.8 points (1.03%) yearover-year from last year’s 370.4 shares. Cume decreased from 33,088,000 to 25,922,700 (21.66%) year-over-year.
