Luke-y Hear: Year/Decade In Music

The most-heard artist of 2019 is Luke, and the most heard artist of the decade is also Luke. Combs and Bryan, respectively. The most-heard songs are Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy” (2019) and Jake Owen’s “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” (decade). The label of the year and decade is – to the surprise of exactly no one – Capitol. Country Aircheck’s December print issue, out next week, details the top music, artists and labels for the past year and the full decade based on airplay data from Mediabase 24/7. For the year, Combs is the top Overall and Male artist, Carrie Underwood is the most-heard Female and Dan + Shay are the top Duo/Group. The Luke Bryan year’s top New Artist is Riley Green. In the label chart share race, Capitol edged Columbia by two-tenths of a point, the imprint’s narrowest margin of victory in 11-consecutive years wearing the crown. Past Combs, the top five artists are Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett, Kane Brown and Dan + Shay. For the decade, Bryan is top Overall and Male, barely edging out Aldean. Underwood Luke Combs is female and Florida Georgia Line earn Duo/Group honors. Beyond Bryan and Aldean, the top five overall adds Blake Shelton, FGL and Kenny Chesney. On the label front, Capitol earned an astounding 15% chart share over the decade, with WMN, RCA, BMLGR and Broken Bow rounding out the top five. (continued on page 8)

Good & Twenty: Big D & Bubba

“On this day in 1999, Big D & Bubba launched into syndication. This is your 20th anniversary!” After a short celebration featuring dessert for breakfast, Big D and Bubba invited Country Aircheck into their Nashville-based studio for a conversation about their road to becoming the longest-running syndicated morning show in the format. Launch Break: In 1996, the pair joined forces at thenWXCT (now WTGE)/Baton Rouge, LA before being lured across the street to competitor WYNK three years later with the promise of syndication. Big D & Bubba launched with KMML/Amarillo, TX as its first affiliate, and among the first breaks was talk of Y2K. “We went through a phase where consultants told us we had to be ‘more country,’” explains Bubba before playing the duo’s firstever syndicated on-air break. “We sounded like old lawyers from Mississippi,” notes Big D. “I was Foghorn Leghorn. We were so consulted, we forgot who we were.” Thomas explained that all three were in their early 20s when the show launched, and consultants and PDs with more experience and years in the format weighed in on what they should do, how they should sound and why they needed to change to experience success. “It’s a mountain of voices pulling you in different Year Won: Patrick Thomas, Big directions,” he notes. joked Bubba of the early advice they were given. “’If Gerry can’t do it, you guys can’t do it.’ Do you know how many times we heard that? A lot.” The show found its stride as the guys settled into a rhythm. “We have never been a Whatcha Gonna Do With A Cowboy: typical morning show with Big D (l) and Bubba (r) work on being “more country” with Garth Brooks. benchmark bits,” says Big D. “For us, it was about being true to ourselves.” Grow & Behold: Following some growing pains – including Big D having a come-to-Jesus meeting with a morning-hating Bubba – stations were added one by one, and in 2003, thenClear Channel moved the show to its WSIX/Nashville offices. By 2008, the guys set their sights on stepping away from major syndicators, and in 2013, they ended their relationship with Premiere/Clear Channel when they elected not to re-sign their contract (CAW 9/30/13). The pieces fell into place, and the trio formed their own Silverfish Media. “Every day is different, every show is different, and I think that’s why it has lasted so long,” says Bubba. “I feel so much freedom in the situation we’re in now.” Big D & Bubba is currently on more than 75 stations across approximately 55 different owners. “No one has enough control to call and say, ‘I’m pulling you off all my stations, and you’re done,’” Thomas explains. How do three men who have worked side-by-side for two decades maintain a partnership without killing one another? “We don’t hang out together off the air at all,” says Big D. Adds Thomas, “If I text these guys outside of work, it’s an emergency,

it’s funny or it’s about football.” Bubba says that extends inside the building, as well. “There’s not a whole lot that can’t be taken care of in a five minute conversation,” he explains. “We don’t have to have meetings or phone conferences.” The three note that they are all best friends, and they get along and even enjoy traveling together, but they have to have distance. Back To The Future: In the coming year, Big D & Bubba’s Game Night with Silverfish Dir./Programming and show contributor Carsen will continue visiting cities with what the guys describe as “part game night, part live radio show, part comedy act and part improv.” They will also continue their work with the USO, with whom they have previously partnered to take their show to military bases overseas in partnership with the Armed Forces Network. Congratulations to Old Dominion, Steve Hodges, Dennis Reese and the RCA promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “One Man Band.” The song is Old Dominion’s seventh career Old Dominion chart-topper and the second single from the group’s self-titled third studio album. Songwriters are Josh Osborn and Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen and Brad Tursi. And kudos to Byron Kennedy and the Stoney Creek reps for notching 49 adds on Lindsay Ell’s “I Don’t Love You” topping this week’s board. Finally, a note about this week’s chart, on which numerous songs have lost bullets as literally dozens of reporting stations conducted radiothons. Thus, declines in airplay may have as much or more to do with the stations devoting entire days to community service than with the relative health of affected records.

OFF THE RECORD: Lainey Wilson Broken Bow’s Lainey Wilson puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to KJLO/Monroe, LA. The first time I heard my single “Dirty Looks” on the radio was on KUZZ/ Bakersfield, CA in the car with my guitar player and two of my radio reps. I started crying tears of joy in the backseat. They caught it on video, Lainey Wilson so naturally I had to post it on Instagram. I was once holding this cute little baby…then it threw up on me. I didn’t have time to go back to the hotel before my show, so I just washed it off the best I could in the sink and played my show smellin’ a little like baby puke. My guitar player Aslan Freeman always helps me carry my stuff, not because I can’t, but because he’s a gentleman and it’s in his nature to take care of people. He always laughs at the same old jokes I tell over and over again and acts like he’s never heard them before. He’s been with me for a long time and actually produced all the songs on my EP I put out independently back in April 2018 that ended up getting me my record deal. I couldn’t have done all this without him, and I’m grateful to have him along for the ride…literally. My gas station must haves are Slim Jims, Kind Bars… maybe some cheese and those Brookside dark chocolate acai and blueberry things. If I could have dinner with anyone, it’d be my papaw on my deddy’s side. Every Sunday after church, we’d go to his house and have black-eyed peas, so that’s what I’d order. My papaw gave Jerry Cupit a couple hundred bucks back in the late ‘70s so he could move to Nashville to chase his dream. Jerry returned the favor years later when I moved to Nashville in my Flagstaff bumper-pull camper trailer. He let me park my camper in his studio parking lot and bum Wi-Fi, water and electricity for three years. Redneck Hollywood is who I am, what I stand for and what I’ve overcome. It gives a snapshot of my story and moments in my life that have led me to exactly where I am today. I grew up in northeast Louisiana where the word redneck was a way of life. It was a word outsiders would call us and we would proudly call ourselves. Hollywood has always been a place that seemed very far away in my mind. It was a place where only movie stars went (not a little redneck hoodlum like me). But from a very early age, I had stars in my eyes, and I knew I was going to have the opportunity to go places my little redneck heart never imagined. My last impulse buy was in Texas when I bought a Buc-ee’s t-shirt and sweatpants. I wore ‘em both at the same time…I probably looked like an official Buc-ee’s spokesperson. I wish I had written Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing at All” by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz. It’s one of those classic songs that’s so great because it would’ve done just as well if it had been released today as it did back when it was released in the late ‘80s. Great songs are timeless, and this is one of those. My road essentials are platform tennis shoes, so I can take my heels off and still wear my bell bottoms. Dry shampoo. And d-e-o for that b-o. If you had to be stuck in any city other than home, it’d be San Diego. The sun shines a little different out there. I’m currently binging Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings on Netflix.

Label promotion execs preview their Q1 artist, single and album priorities, and the Most-Heard Artist of the Decade is the subject of The Interview. “In 2009, we were probably on two tour Carrie buses and had one semi-truck, maybe two,” Underwood Bryan says as he looks back over his decade atop the format. “Now we’re nine, 10 buses and nine, 10 semis. We’re looking at 55 employees that count on me to do my job every night and, when we’re doing stadium shows, there’s 85-90. We contract about 30 people to come in and help us put on stadium shows and the Farm Tour shows. There’s also a whole Crash My Playa team I only see once a year. “People are like, ‘When are you going to Jason Aldean retire?’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t want to have to tell people that work for me that they don’t have a gig.’ I love being the guy a lot of people count on. I don’t wake up with anxiety about it. I wake up going, ‘All right, let’s get after it and show the world what we’re going to do this year or this week.’” Bryan even weighs in on the what-iscountry? tug-of-war: “I will never be the Riley Green guy who criticizes and bellyaches about how someone makes music and a living for themselves. I’ve had it happen to me. One minute I’m the savior of country music. The next, I’ve ruined it. So I’m never going to be that guy. I’ve heard legends say, ‘I wish country music would go back to ...’ I don’t really understand why we would spend a lot of time trying to sound like people in the ‘80s and ‘90s. I get what people are trying to say, Dan + Shay but you have to find your own sound. “Midland have a more retro sound and it’s working for them. Then I’m listening to Kane Brown, and then Dan + Shay. That’s a lot across the board, but at the end of the day, the fans have to buy
