Veterans DAY 2019
Women Lead Awards Week
Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton and Carrie Underwood are the standard bearers for Wednesday’s (11/13) 53rd CMA Awards and, in a larger sense, all of country music during arguably the biggest week of the year. Music business impact includes four awards shows (see ASCAP and SESAC recaps below; BMI is Tuesday), two sets of radio remotes, 64 inviteonly gatherings, 4,211 dress purchases, twice that many black socks, Reba, Carrie and Dolly 79,820 servings of alcohol and one lost wallet (to be determined). Those numbers are mostly made up, but Country Aircheck stands by its reporting. In all seriousness, the CMA hosts are touting a feel-good vibe for the week’s ABC-televised pinnacle. Scheduling prevented their attendance at the customary radio remotes orientation press conference, but audio provided to stations and EPK footage add a bit more context to the women-first approach. “The opening performance is going to be spectacular,” McEntire says. “Nobody wants to miss it, so be sure you’re in your seat, in front of the television, watching when that all happens.” “You’re going to see us up there, [and] maybe some people you haven’t seen in a while,” Underwood says. “[Viewers will] remember what is amazing about country music and women’s roles in country music – what was amazing, what could be amazing, everything in between. It’s just going to be a really beautiful night.” McEntire adds, “They will know the songs when they hear them. That’s a good enough tease, isn’t it?” “We just wanted to jam-pack the CMA Awards with women,” Underwood says, noting the bond female artists have formed in supporting each other. “We really have all banded together and made it a point to lift each other up. This night is going to represent that to a T.” Elsewhere she notes, “Artists are the ones

getting their moments ... but it’s also about all the women who work in this business as well – managers and people that work at the label, musicians, all of us. It’s going to be very uplifting.” Speaking of ... McCoy and Associates Owner/CEO Sharla McCoy is celebrating 25 years of her Music Row Live! remotes as 19 stations join her at The Tracking Room in Nashville. She tells Country Aircheck that the anniversary nearly passed without notice. “I was so busy working on getting everything together that I had no clue it was our 25th year until Facebook notified me, so thank God for that, I guess!” McCoy’s setup has remained inviting and inclusive, and she credits the ongoing success to the stations participating. “My team, the volunteers, the artists and labels who come out, and you – the amazing stations that join us every year – are what keep this going strong,” McCoy told station representatives gathered before the kickoff of CMA Awards week. The event benefits Fisher House Foundation and will host dozens of artists for station interviews and features lunchtime performances by Haley & Michaels, Chancey Williams and Rayne Johnson. –Chuck Aly, Monta Vaden

MY TUNES: Michelle Kammerer BMLG Records’ Sr. Dir./National Promotion & Marketing Michelle Kammerer discusses her most influential music: 1. Dolly Parton’s Greatest Hits (1982): The first album I was given as a gift. “Here You Come Again,” “Two Doors Down,” “Islands In the Stream,” “I Will Always Love You”…it had it all, and I wore that record out! I still love it and have it on vinyl (Thanks, Brooke!). And I am still just as obsessed with Dolly, Michelle because she is perfect. Kammerer 2. Reba’s Read My Mind: This was the height of ‘90s country, and I had just gotten my learner’s permit. So, I drove all over the back dirt roads in Kansas singing every song at the top of my lungs. During my first job in the industry, I was introduced to Reba and was so star struck, I blanked and told her my name was Stephanie. Last year, I told Reba that story and she thought it was hysterical. Thankfully, I redeemed myself, made Reba laugh and she now knows my real name. 3. Boyz II Men’s Cooleyhighharmony: When this came out, I had never heard anything like it. Their harmonies were incredible. They changed the game. I see them every time they play in town, and they always amaze me. If you ever see a crazy redhead in the crowd at one of their symphony shows screaming “Motownphilly”...it’s...er...not me. 4. Garth Brooks’ Garth Brooks, No Fences, Ropin’ The Wind, The Chase, In Pieces, Fresh Horses & Sevens: Garth ruled country music in the ‘90s, and I had every album on repeat in my Walkman. When “Ain’t Goin’ Down (‘Til The Sun Comes Up)” came out, my best friend and I faked being sick, so we could stay home from school and play the tape over and over again until we learned all the words. Still know it. Still rock it at karaoke. 5. Martina McBride’s The Way That I Am: Martina is from a small town in KS, and I’m from a small town in Kansas. I was memorized by her voice (“Independence Day” floored us all) and the thought that someone from Kansas could make it in Nashville. That was the first time I truly believed that I, too, could come to Nashville and work in the music industry I loved. And my dream to move to Nashville as born. Highly-regarded song or album that you’ve never heard: Anything by Radiohead. An “important” piece of music or artist you just don’t get: Bob Dylan. An album you played or listened to incessantly: Everything above and Alanis Morrissette’s Jagged Little Pill. One obscure or non-country song that you think everyone should listen to right now: Not obscure, but every time I hear Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” it stops me in my tracks. It’s a message the world needs right now. One item in your music collection that you’d rather not admit to enjoying: I have many Neil Diamond vinyl records.

the Board/Pres. Paul Williams onstage to present Travis with the honor in recognition of his pioneering contributions to music. Songwriter Hillary Lindsey was acknowledged for the worldwide impact of her repertoire, joining previous Global Impact Award winners Lana Del Rey and Jessi Alexander. Presented by Black River’s Kelsea Ballerini and ASCAP VP/ Nashville Membership Mike Sistad, Capitol’s Little Big Town then celebrated the career milestone with a performance of the Lindsey co-penned “Girl Crush.” Old Dominion’s Matthew Ramsey and Trevor Rosen received the Songwriter-Artists of the Year Award from ASCAP EVP/Membership John Titta and 2018 honoree Brett Young for songs “Hotel Key,” “One That Got Away” and “Make It Sweet.” Other highlights included actor Ted Danson and ASCAP member Mary Steenburgen presenting EMI Nashville’s Brothers Osborne with the previously-announced Vanguard Award; Steven Battey’s Song of the Year win for his first country No. 1, Luke Combs’s “One Number Away;” and Dan + Shay and singer/songwriter Jordan Reynolds’ show-opening performance of “Tequila,” one of ASCAP’s top country songs of the year. Let’s SESAC What’s Going On
Last night’s (11/10) SESAC Nashville Music Awards at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum struck a balance
between celebratory and relaxed in a compact 90-minute program. As winners made their way to the front of the room to enjoy the ceremony from large, leather couches, other writers, artists, publishers and industry pros filled tables and high top seating while enjoying wine and cocktails. BMG’s Blanco Brown kicked off with his take on the Sam Cooke classic “A Change Is Gonna Come” before insisting everyone “git up” as he performed “The Git Up,” during which Stoney Creek’s King Calaway lived their best lives while dancing

OFF THE RECORD: Noah Schnacky Big Machine’s Noah Schnacky puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I was always on the road growing up, so my dad and I were jamming to the local stations as we passed through different cities. Being from Minnesota, I listened to KEEY/Minneapolis a lot, and when we moved to Orlando, it was WWKA/ Orlando and WPOV/Lakeland, FL. Noah The first time I heard myself on the Schnacky radio was mind blowing. I can still remember screaming to the people on the streets that it was my song playing on the radio! Growing up, it was Country radio that made me into the artist and the storyteller that I am today. So, the fact that my song was among the songs I looked up to was the ultimate accomplishment. No doubt the funniest moment of my whole radio tour happened when I was halfway through playing one of my songs and two 100 lbs. dogs started wrestling each other right in front of me. It was actually on the first day of radio tour, so I wasn’t exactly sure how to handle it. I tried my best to ignore it, and it made for a funny video. My least favorite road companion was the minivan, for sure. I always begged for a cooler car, but the minivan kept showing up every time we left the airport. Still not sure how anybody took my 6’5 body seriously getting out of a minivan. Any time we stopped, it was always for cold brew. After 20 weeks of radio tour, I can tell you where the best spots are anywhere in the country. And the fact that it wasn’t always stopping at chain stores made it all the more fun. I love exploring and tasting the local culture. I wish I could have dinner with Garth Brooks. I’d ask him where he wants to eat, because I bet he knows some good spots. But if I had to pick, I’d take him to get some lobster up in Maine. That was probably the best meal I’ve ever tasted. I’d ask him about his story from his eyes, how he balanced everything and if he’d adopt me as his honorary “music industry son.” My next project makes me feel alive, like it’s coming straight out of my soul. The songs are different angles on the parts of life I love the most, and they add up to who I am right now, still only in my first year at radio. After writing for the last 10 years my life, seeing some of my songs come to life in the studio is overwhelming. And to be making it with the dream team I have of Scott Borchetta, Dann Huff and Jason Owen, I know it’s going to be uniquely impactful. This one’s dumb. I don’t know if it was all the hours on the planes, or the fact that I was 12 radio visits deep that week, but for some reason I bought a $200 construction zone jacket in Spokane. The worst part is, I feel constantly obligated to wear it, or it’s like I’m wasting my money... Back in Florida last weekend, my brother and I pulled each other on a boogie board behind the boat down the river... it lasted like three rides and snapped. #MeanwhileinFlorida My road essentials are my Bluetooth speaker and Polaroid camera. Bluetooth speaker because music makes for the best moments and my Polaroid to capture those moments and keep them forever. Life goes too fast, and I want to make as many memories and celebrate them as often as possible. My least favorite interview question is, “Why are you eating all of our studio snacks?” I will always and forever be binge watching The Office on Netflix. #loyalfan #jimandpamforever

along in the crowd. SESAC Chairman/CEO John Josephson took to the podium to fete outgoing VP/Creative Service Shannan Hatch, who served as the evening’s host. Soon joining newly launched Fourward Music as President, Hatch received a standing ovation and garnered multiple statements of praise throughout the night, to which she once emotionally and eloquently responded, “Well, shit!” Hatch honored recipients of Americana Awards, including Style And Say Cheese: Stoney Creek’s Jimmie Allen (r) celebrates a win at Rosanne Cash’s “Not last night’s (11/11) SESAC Nashville Many Miles To Go,” The Music Awards alongside showAvett Brothers’ “High opener Blanco Brown. Steppin’” and Hayes Carll’s “None’ya” and “Times Like These” before acknowledging additional attendees and SESAC partners who have hit milestones in 2019. SESAC Sr. Dirs./Creative Service Lydia Schultz and ET Brown then assisted Hatch in the presentation of Country Awards to the writers and publishers of Rascal Flatts’ “Back To Life,” Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy,” Jimmie Allen’s “Best Shot,” Russell Dickerson’s “Blue Tacoma,” Runaway June’s “Buy My Own Drinks,” Eric Church’s “Desperate Man,” Mitchell Tenpenny’s “Drunk Me,” Jason Aldean’s “Girl Like You,” Dustin Lynch’s “Good Girl,” Chris Stapleton’s “Millionaire,” Lee Brice’s “Rumor,” Brett Young’s “Here Tonight,” Florida Georgia Line’s “Talk You Out Of It,” and Chris Young’s “Hangin’ On” and “Raised On Country.” Presentation highlights included Naomi Cooke of Runaway June inadvertently stabbing Hatch with the chopsticks in her hair, mention of FGL’s “Talk You Out Of It” making the Pandora “sex playlist,” and Allen – the unofficial winner of best outfit in any room ever – performing a piano version of “Best Shot” with co-writer Josh London. “Desperate Man” co-writer Ray Wiley Hubbard performed his take on the song before Church appeared to surprise his friend and co-writer with the award. Warner Chappell Music was named Publisher of the Year, while Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy” picked up Song of the Year and Justin Ebach took home Songwriter – no surprise considering he penned two of the tunes named above. Lynch was on-hand to present the trophy to Ebach, who declared “Holy shit! Eric Church just talked on this mic about 10 minutes ago!” Ebach then cleaned up his speech to acknowledge his mother in the audience, the songwriters and artists in the room and his wife, Curb|Word Music Publishing VP Janine Appleton Ebach, who he says not only organizes his career and life, but also his awards show attire. – Monta Vaden

Congratulations to Brantley Gilbert and Lindsay Ell, Chris Palmer, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “What Happens In A Small Town.” The duet is the first single from Gilbert’s fifth studio album, Fire Brantley & Lindsay & Brimstone, and his fifth charttopper. The song marks Ell’s first trip to the top of the charts. Songwriters are Rhett Akins, Brock Berryhill, Josh Dunne and Gilbert. And kudos to Bobby Young and the Capitol reps on notching 14 adds for Carrie Underwood’s “Drinking Alone” topping the board for a second consecutive week.
