Pick Six: Label Draft 2019

Seven years ago, Country Aircheck’s Fantasy Label Draft began as an entertaining forum for radio pros to chat about artists and make bold predictions for the year to come. For the first six seasons, VP/GM Chuck Aly served as commissioner and declared winners based upon a method that is just questionable enough to have come from the New England Patriots’ camp, “Chuck’s Eyeball Test.” But this is 2019, and all bets are off. No participation trophies here! What good is a game without a winner? And how do you declare a winner without a score? As a new commissioner takes the field, a painstaking analysis was done to determine a fairyet-competitive points system, which has been ratified by this year’s ownership group – KUPL/Portland’s MoJoe Roberts; KFRG/ Riverside, CA’s Heather Froglear; KRYS/Corpus Kay Manley MoJoe Roberts Christi, TX’s “Big Frank” Edwards; WGKX/Memphis’ Kay Manley; WMZQ/ Washington, DC’s Corey Calhoun; and KWEN/Tulsa’s Jenny Law. But more on that during post-game. Spotlighting individual inductees leading up to the Oct. 14 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala continues with songwriter/artist Larry Gatlin. Performing together as The Gatlin Brothers for more than six decades, Larry, Steve and Rudy are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their ACM Single of the Year “All The Gold In California.” The majority of Larry’s mammoth catalog is solo-written, including signature songs “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer To You)” and “Broken Lady” — which took home the Grammy for Best Country Song in 1976 — and cuts for artists including Dottie West, Larry Gatlin Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Presley, Glen Campbell and Roy Orbison. I was in Las Vegas auditioning for The Imperials, who needed me to work with Jimmy Dean the night after they closed

MY TUNES: Trea Landon Warner/WMN’s Trea Landon discusses his most influential music: 1. Conway Twitty: He made me believe the stories behind his songs and he wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable. That showed a side of him as an artist that I didn’t see in a lot of other artists. There’s zero commercial agenda. I try to bring that with me into the Trea Landon decision-making process of what songs I’m going to cut. 2. Luke Bryan: I related to his songs as a teenager more than anything else on the radio. I sang my whole life, but Luke’s music is what made me want to start writing. 3. Linkin Park: Their music pulled me through my parents’ divorce. The music’s dark, but most of the time, the message is positive. 4. Jon Pardi: His music influenced me to move to Nashville. It has the traditional elements in it that I love. Hearing him on the radio gave me hope that there would be a lane for me. 5. George Strait: The first artist I remember knowing. My parents played his music all the time. I have old family videos of me imitating him. Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: “The Git Up” by Blanco Brown. An “important” piece or style of music you just don’t get: Bob Dylan. I also never got into The Eagles. An album you listened to incessantly: Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory and Meteora pulled me through a tough time. My favorite non-country song right now is “Dancing With A Stranger” by Sam Smith. Great melody and message. Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Billie Eilish. with Elvis. I didn’t get the job, but Dottie West saw and heard me. Glen Campbell had given her a new Ovation Guitar, and I asked if I could borrow it one night. I was fiddling around and she goes, “You’re making that up, aren’t ya?” I said yes, and that’s when she told me, “Larry Gatlin, you look enough like Mickey Newbury, you’ve gotta be able to write a song.” I went home to Houston, wrote eight songs, sent them to her on a Wollensak reel-to-reel tape, and she sent me a plane ticket. [My wife] Janis and I moved and five years later, I won a Grammy for Song of the Year for “Broken Lady.” When we first moved to Nashville, I was a janitor at [then

TV station] WLAC, and my wife was a teacher. We had the radio alarm set every morning to WSM-AM, and the first time I ever heard one of my songs on the radio it was waking up to Dottie singing Willie Good Day: Gatlin (l) with “You’re The Other Willie Nelson. Half Of Me.” I used to take notes on barf bags, backs of golf score cards, anything I had handy. Now, I never go out of town without my Blackwing 602 pencils and a few sheets of plain white paper. I really have no internal dialogue ... I talk to myself. For example, my accountant doesn’t like me to pay the $3 to use ATMs. So when I go on the road, they bring me money. I was going to be gone a couple weeks so I had a wad of $1,000 in my pocket. The internal dialogue that came out at that moment was, “Larry Wayne, you’ve got more money in your pocket than your daddy ever had in the bank.” So, I wrote Got more money in my pocket than my daddy ever had in the bank. Don’t know if there’s someone to blame, but I do know there’s one to thank. I’ve had my share of ups and downs, I’ve sailed some stormy seas, but mostly fair winds have blown on me. When something happens, I try to say something funny, poignant or meaningful. That’s my deal. I’m a songwriter, and I love great storytelling. I’m a ham and have always been class clown and life of the party. This is our 65th year of singing together. to Nashville in ’71, the brothers were in college at Texas Tech. We are the first generation of either side of our family to get to attend college, so it was important that they stay in school, but with the dream and knowledge that we’d sing together. I wrote the songs, but every time I would sit down with pencil and paper, I heard brother Steve singing his part in my right ear and brother Rudy his part in my left ear. If you’re in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, it not only means you’re one of the best songwriters in Nashville, it means you’re one of the best songwriters in the world. Comments I’ve gotten from my friends are, “It’s about time.” And I’ve written back, “God’s timing is better than mine.” The good book says in Galatians, “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The spiritual man in me says I should not take glory for it, but the old carnal man in me says it’s okay if I take the credit as long as I give him the glory. And I do. My favorite line I’ve ever written is, “Just existing makes dying look easy.” Sure, I would’ve loved to be in it 20 years ago, but ever since I found out, I’ve had a smile on my face. –Caitlin DeForest

This Is How We Do It: Each team owner selects six players – Male, Female, Duo/Group and Rookie artist, as well as a Label President and VP/Promotion. This year, draft order was based upon who replied first to the invitation, and fortunately the six were kind enough to respond in a boy-girl sort. Very convenient! The six-round snaking draft allows each owner to select players for their slots in any order they see fit. Within the rules, a “Rookie” is defined as any artist who has never had a No. 1 as an artist, and label execs may be anyone the team owner chooses. Got all that? Each also employed unique strategies to prepare for the draft. “Considering this was not conducive to a night personality’s schedule, I stayed up ‘round the clock drinking Yee Yees and throwing darts at pictures of every possible draftee,” bemoans Calhoun. “Many holes later, I just picked people that sent out the most recent tweet. Spoiler alert: I’m totally going to win.” Roberts also had an interesting prep tactic. “I asked [KUPL MD] Danny Dwyer for some input, but then I just thought, ‘What would [KKWF/Seattle PD] Drew Bland do?’ and did the opposite.” Froglear also used the George Costanza theory of doing the opposite after planning her picks a week in advance. How did those preparations pay off? Plot Twist And Shout: It seemed no surprise Combs was first off the board. What blindsided our owners were some of the heavy-hitters not selected. “No Blake Shelton, Eric Church or Jason Aldean,” notes Manley. “And no Brett Young?” asks Law. “Guess we’re not all playing to win here!” exclaims Roberts, after which Edwards reminds everyone he selected sure-fire pointsreceiver Luke Bryan in the first round. Early on, Froglear jumped to pick up Hardy as her Rookie, but Roberts initiated the first coach’s challenge. “Hardy has already had a No. 1; he was a writer on [Blake Shelton’s recent multiweek chart topper] ‘God’s Country’!” protests Roberts. After both

the incoming and outgoing commissioner conferred around a small replay monitor – or a computer screen, whatever – it was ruled that Hardy was, in fact, an eligible Rookie due to not having a No. 1 as an artist. “Monta definitely cheated by allowing Hardy,” asserts Roberts. Froglear retorts, “MoJoe’s jaw just dropped when I prevailed. Burn!” Calhoun was dragged into the middle of the ownership battle, sharing, “MoJoe is still emailing me in a separate thread trying to get me to jump on his bandwagon to petition that rookie pick, but sorry, bud...the commish has spoken! I’m totally here for the drama, and I’ve brought popcorn.” Multiple encroachment and false start penalties were enforced throughout the day as picks were attempted out of turn. Other owners perfected the scramble as they made selections on the fly at the line of scrimmage. “I’m just trying to figure it out as we get there,” surmises Edwards. “I have no clue who has picked who, so I’m just spinning my chair in circles and pointing,” agrees Manley. “And, sorry about the delay of game. I was busy playing Garth by request.” Law nearly brought the game to a halt with an extended delay, which she explained was due in part to her air shift and in part to a real-life episode of Law & Order unfolding outside her studio window. “There were cops at the sketchy hotel across the street, and a felon with a firearm who tried to sell heroin to an undercover cop,” explains Law. Cue Calhoun with a refill on popcorn. There were split decisions from the group on who prevailed on draft day. “As far as a total team, MoJoe had the mojo today, but if we’re looking at smack talk, The Frog toad the line,” quips Manley. Calhoun agreed that Froglear has her eye on the end zone, noting, “This is why she does an air shift alone. Her non-existent co-host wouldn’t be able to keep up.” He’s also playing zone coverage and watching Law, too, though. “Jenny brought out heroin and firearms, and I’m not sure if that was a threat or what.” Froglear gave a polite nod to Roberts’ team but has her eye on Manley and Edwards. “Still waters run deep, and I’m actually scared,” she declares. “It’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for.” Laws and Edwards both gave roster credit to Roberts, but Law threw a deep ball to Calhoun, too. “Corey had some great one-liners when he decided to set down the popcorn long enough to use his buttery little fingers to chime in on the email thread,” she states. Law’s ascertainment earned a buttery hand gesture emoji from Calhoun. How will it all shake out? Points begin accumulating this week, and a winner will be declared this time next year.
