Seats & Springs II:Diary Highlights

Nielsen’s Spring 2018 diary releases continued last week and more than 300 stations continue to assess their performance. Country programmers share some of the highlights here. Mel Wheeler WSLC/Roanoke, VA OM/PD Brett Sharp: So proud of the Star Country team, from promotions to programming and sales. We saw the largest P25-54 share in five books – 13.0 Monday-Sunday, 6ammid – and continuing to grow incrementally. The morning show had a near record high of 13.2 in the same demo, and this makes for consecutive No. 1 books P12+ Monday-Sunday, 6am-mid. That’s over 10 years! We are having a good time. Townsquare KMDL (97.3 The Dawg)/ Brett Sharp Lafayette, LA Brand Mgr. Jude Walker: In a market saturated with Country stations, or stations that at least sprinkle some in, KMDL continues to be top “Dawg”. Though we dipped slightly to No. 2 overall 12+, we continued our string of 16 years straight as the market’s No. 1 Country station. We are No. 1 overall Persons 25-54 and Men 25-54, too. We took a hit with Women 25-54, an anomaly, and that’s probably where we can attribute the slight decline overall. Promotionally, we actually laid kind of low this spring, but still had a great response to our Jude Walker company-wide cash promotion. We had multiple local winners, which always adds sizzle to the airwaves. We totally owned the many concerts that came in as well, welcoming the Luke Bryan and Thomas Rhett tours. Thomas even filmed part of his latest music video at the Cajundome. An important program for us, even though it’s in a weekend slot, continues to be our Classic Country Saturday Night show. It’s a six-hour, all-request, locally produced juggernaut that raked in a 28.7 share 12+ with shares of up to 43.3 among Women 2554. While it’s just weekend flavor, it should prove that folks still enjoy some “real” country music. (continued on page 7)

Michael Knox: Label Maker

Multi-platinum producer/publisher/syndicated radio show host Michael Knox just added one more title to his résumé – label head. Knox teamed with BMG to launch Music Knox Records last month (CAT 7/24). Country Aircheck talked to him about the new venture. Country Aircheck: Were you just not busy enough? MK: Yeah (laughs). It’s always been something I wanted to do and the timing was right. I’m running Peermusic Group right now, too (Knox is VP). I love that. My radio show Knox Country 360 and the record label all fell into Michael Knox place at the same time. I’m kind of ADD that

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE Thompson Square’s Keifer and Shawna Thompson discuss their most influential music: 1. Bruce Springsteen: His songwriting is as good as it gets. He’s one of the few artists that, in my opinion, has not only stayed relevant over decades, but has Thompson Square gotten better. (KT) 2. Shelby Lynne: Her voice, songwriting and love of swing music has been a huge influence on me since I first heard her 25 years ago. She is a south Alabama girl as well, and I figured if she could make it in this business then I could, too. (ST) 3. Merle Haggard: He was the first artist where I really became aware of songwriting. I began not just listening to songs but trying to break them down and noticing how they were constructed. And I think he had one of the best county voices ever. (KT) 4. Reba: I love her vocal styling, charisma and business sense. (ST) 5. U2: They shaped part of my adolescence. The energy of their songs, the way they make me feel and sonically – I don’t think I’ve ever gravitated towards another band like U2. And like Springsteen, their songwriting and records remain relevant and are as good as they’ve always been. (KT) • Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: The Beatles. There are so many albums we’ve never heard in their entirety. (ST & KT) • “Important” music you just don’t get: For me it was Bruce Springsteen. I grew up hearing nothing but country music, so I wasn’t exposed to his work until much later in life. It wasn’t until I heard “Terry’s Song” that I connected emotionally to his music. (ST) • An album you listened to incessantly: Shelby Lynne’s Temptation. (ST) U2’s Joshua Tree. There’s a reason it’s one of the greatest albums of all time. It just is what it is. Great! (KT) • An obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: “Fascination Street” by The Cure. It’s unexplainable. There’s something about that song that takes me to a super vibey place and I feel like it’s timeless. Also, “Terry’s Song” by Bruce Springsteen. To hear a man sing with such love and compassion about the loss of a dear friend just ripped my heart out. (KT) • Music you’d rather not admit enjoying: We listen to so many different genres of music, but not one that we are embarrassed to admit enjoying. We’re proud of the weird. (ST & KT)

way. I have to be doing a few things to stay focused. I’m the guy with the ceiling fan on in the room to stay calm. When did you start thinking about launching a label? When I met [BMG Pres./Repertoire & Mktg.] Zach Katz we really clicked. When BMG bought the label (CAT 1/30/17), they called me out of the blue and said, “Zach wants to meet you.” Typically, when you try to get a venture, they want to know the talent you’re looking at [but] I’d always been looking for somebody that wanted to invest in me. BMG bought Broken Bow for $100 million off a lot of the work I did, so Zach, [BBRMG EVP] Jon Loba and [VP/A&R] Sara Knabe were big supporters. It all felt perfect. What’s the mission? Authenticity. I’ve been around a long time. I’ve seen us go from hat acts to a lot of females to a lot of males to a lot of drum loops. Maybe we’re getting away from small-town America a little bit, which is our core audience. Let’s invest in artists, not singers. Radio is filled with great singers and great songs [but] we don’t really have a lot of artists. I’d like to go find those guys and girls and bands. You’re more interested in finding artists before they get here? That’s the goal. I found Jason Aldean [performing] in a strip mall in Georgia. There’s a Texas act I really like that is just now reaching into Nashville. There are a couple of acts I’ve been looking at for about a year, waiting for the right time to contact them and move forward. When it comes to artist development, I’m very patient waiting for something to be right, instead of going in and trying to force a direction on them. What kinds of artists do you look for? People who have something to say, a little unpolished and not so “Nashville.” Sometimes when you come here, you soften up a little bit. I want to find artists willing to dig in to the school of hard knocks. I’m a 24/7 guy. With Jason, it took six years to get him a deal. Michael Tyler, it took me eight years. I believe in true artist development and letting people grow. I invest in them like I wanted BMG to invest in me. What’s the division of duties? My role is a creative focus. I’m not trying to promote the records. I don’t have to learn what Jon or Zach do. I trust them. Music Knox Records is a creative extension of the label group – just another arm of going out and signing talent. Will there be additional staff? I’m such a loner. With Jason, I’m the only guy who finds the songs, sits with him and picks them. Shalacy Griffin is the SVP of

my production company and she handles all my day-to-day. She’s a true fan of the format, and it’s really important to have those people around you. It’s funny to say this, but it’s hard to find true country fans in Nashville. You grew up in the music business [Knox’s father is the late 1950s “Party Doll” singer/songwriter Buddy Knox]. What did your dad teach you? He was signed to Roulette Records, which never paid him any money. My dad died broke in a motor home. I just don’t want that to happen on my watch [and] I know the people to watch out for. I also remember him saying, “Son, don’t talk them into singing a song that they don’t want to sing because they might have to sing it for 50 years.” That always resonated with me. What’s your dream scenario for the label? I want to find acts that move the needle and make a difference. Hopefully BMG and I can hang in there long enough to develop talent [that connects] like Jason and Miranda Lambert do. I’m hoping they’ll allow me to step back to move forward. –Wendy Newcomer

iHeartMedia WNOE/New Orleans PD Ashley Wilson: We’ve seen a huge increase in AQH for 18-34 listeners across all dayparts. Putting your listeners first will always equal good results. I obsessed over Cindy Spicer’s strategy at WQIK as well as Lisa McKay’s at WQDR. These are both winning stations that reflect their local communities and I’ve tried to replicate that in New Orleans. Adams WBTU/Ft. Wayne, IN PD Randy Alomar: We had another great book! Our driver is The Bobby Bones Show in mornings. They Ashley Wilson continue to set the bar higher each book, and this time they went No. 1 overall in a few demos with growth in both TSL and cume. It’s all high fives and handshakes at work and I was thrilled to receive several messages from record labels in Nashville on our successRandy Alomar es. Being a non-reporter is very difficult! Improvising, networking, goals, focus and creativity are keys. My foot is always on the gas and I’m geeked about the rest of 2018. Cumulus WLWI-FM/Montgomery, AL PD Greg Thomas: I-92 WLWI had a huge spring book. The market’s leading Country station Greg Thomas scored top-five finishes across the board and

through the whole day. This includes Persons 12+, P18-34, P18-49, and with the primary target P25-54! We offered listeners a lot of reasons to listen and more often, with trips, cash, concert tickets and community involvement. We offered fun and engaging content on-air while extending the brand online through the website and social platforms. Beasley WKXC/Augusta, GA OM/PD Tee Gentry Tee Gentry: Kicks 99 had a big book. Such a great staff here who are always focused on making the station the best. We had fun with “Win Luke’s Cash” as part of our collective contesting, and had billboards throughout the market promoting it. We looked good in all demos and dayparts. Alpha KZKX/Lincoln, NE Content Dir. Rob Kelley: It’s been long consistent five year upward climb back to the top for KZKX, which is Lincoln’s heritage Country outlet dating back to 1976. In 2013, we began assembling a team of outstanding fresh millennial broadcasters for Nielsen’s second youngest market. The strategy paid off with cume and TSL growth each book. The JP, Lauren and Husker Nick morning show is fun, digitally interactive and executes over the top key benchmarks that have become the talk of the town! Midday host Liz and evening personality Coryelle were both former interns. Yes, we do live nights in Rob Kelley our Big Ten Nebraska college town. I have the honor of doing afternoons. Our team is extremely passionate for breaking new music, loves being on the street and we all show up at every club event regardless of how well known the artist is. We lead the Lincoln Country battle and are second overall in the market in Persons 12+, 18-49 and 25-54. In AM drive, we’ve led the Country battle for three books running in both Persons 12+ and 18-49, and now the morning team is No. 1 Persons 25-54 in the market.

Page 9

Signal KHLR/Little Rock PD Mike Kennedy: We’re getting stronger every book and spring was a good one. We increased our Adults 25-54 share in mornings, where we were up 1.6. Middays, meanwhile, were up by 1.0 and afternoons were up by 2.5. We’ll keep pushing forward, giving the listeners what they want – more new country music and fewer commercials. Our competition has been Mike Kennedy around for 37 years, but we’re slowly and steadily growing the audience for 106.7 The Ride. Ocala WOGK/Gainesville-Ocala, FL PD Mr. Bob: We’re blessed this book with No. 1 rankings Persons 12+, 18-49, 2554 and 35-64. We engaged listeners with effective text-to-win contesting for tickets, meet and greets, cash and more. Social media was important, too, and we regularly hit the streets to deliver lunch to businesses. Our Spring Acoustic Concert with David Lee Murphy, Jerrod Niemann and Kip Moore, was a big draw, and we put on other events like our March for Babies and NTR promotions. We partnered Mr. Bob with the local TV station for cross-promotions, too. In a crowded market it always feels good to more than double the Country competitors combined! Live and local is alive and well and continues to win in Gainesville-Ocala. Tyler Media KJKE/Oklahoma City CoOM Kevin Christopher: In the challenging world of being the only Nielsen Audio Top 50 diary market, sample is always tenuous, but Jake-FM is happy to be the No. 1 Country station in OKC for Persons and Women 18-34 Kevin and 18-44. I have the hardest working team Christopher in Country radio. We’re excited about doing Jake Jam, OKC’s biggest outdoor concert July 28 and seeing the results of Summer ‘18 soon! –CA Staff
