Q&A:WXTU’s Andie Summers

Last week’s multi-year extension for Beasley WXTU/Philadelphia morning personality Andie Summers (CAT 7/25) is a milestone. Beyond furthering her impressive 24 years in the airshift, she also continues as one of the still all-too rare women fronting a major market morning show in the format (see: WPOC/Baltimore’s Laurie DeYoung). And if that’s not enough, she’s out there finding kidneys for people, too.

CA: The title has been The Andie Summers Show for several years, but I’m thinking in some sense it’s been your show far longer ... how did everyone else get there?

AS: When I partnered with Frank Lario, we decided no names. We’re not bigger than the station – ‘XTU is the star – so we were the XTU Morning Crew and it took pressure off everyone. We were just like this big, happy family. Then Frank left, we got some consultants in and they decided it was The Andie Summers Show

How did you get into radio?

I was a Mass Communications major at Bloomsburg University, which didn’t have any classes in radio, which was fine because I had no interest until a friend of mine took a job at a 6,000-watt Country station in town. They were hiring part-timers and he said it would be a great résumé builder. I had no experience and no interest in country music, but after one shift I thought, “This is what I want to do forever.”

What clicked?

I had my sights set on television and would have loved to do a talk show, but knew they don’t just pull people from college to do that. I’d have to be a news anchor, and I was not cut out to be a reporter. As much as I’m a hard worker, I was also realistic about the work I would have to put in to even get a shot at what I really would have loved doing.

Tour Launch: Need A Savior

Jelly Roll’s inaugural headlining arena and amphitheater tour, the 44-date Backroad Baptism Tour, kicked off this past weekend. WKHX/ Atlanta APD/afternoons Lucas Phelan and Coord./Promotions Jake Bennett and iHeartMedia WUBL/Atlanta afternoon host Kristen Gates shared their takeaways from Saturday’s (7/29) show at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre with Country Aircheck

“Jelly Roll is more country than people give him credit for,” says Phelan, pointing out not a single note was missed and his voice “sounded better than ever.”

E = mca²: MCA’s Sam Hunt in Indianapolis. Pictured (l-r) are WLHK’s Cara Denis, the label’s Donna Passuntino, Hunt and WFMS’ Malone Andie Summers Pretty In Ink: Gates with Jelly Roll.

Gates agreed, saying, “While we’re conditioned to expect that a live show may not sound as good as these artists sound on the radio, Jelly’s voice was undeniably smooth … it was as close to perfect as it could get.”

Mr. Roll’s ability to make people feel seen and appreciated was evident backstage, where Gates says he personally greeted and thanked every person in the room. Similarly, Bennett describes him as “gracious and kind … a true man of the people.”

At the beginning of the show, Jelly Roll promised “a high that even alcohol and drugs can’t give you.” “I hope you think to yourself, ‘that’s the best fucking show I ever went to,’” he told the crowd. While still very much a country concert, Jelly Roll also embraced his rap and rock roots. “I have a rule,” he explained. “If I sing a new song, I have to sing some old shit too.” Covers included “Simple Man,” “Take It Easy,” “House Of The Rising Sun” and “Should’ve Been A Cowboy.” “Rap, rock, country … doesn’t matter,” said Bennett. “This is why we go to concerts.”

The audience showed up early, according to Phelan and Bennett, who reported seeing some of the longest lines to get into the amphitheater in recent memory. Fans were planted in their seats well ahead of the headlining set for host Adam Meyers and openers Caitlynne Curtis and Struggle Jennings. “This man right here has been my best friend for over 20 years, and I’ve been waiting for a chance to tour the country with [him],” Jelly Roll said of the latter, who rejoined him onstage for “Fall In The Fall.”

Making it a true family affair, Jelly was also joined by his daughter, Bailee, for “Tears Could Talk” off of 2020’s Beautiful Disaster, and, a few songs later, by wife Bunnie. “Jelly Roll fans are just as much a fan of Bunnie’s,” notes Phelan. “The crowd went wild seeing her walk out.”

Gates adds, “That’s what makes him so relatable: his love for his family and his understanding that his show is more for the fans than it is for him.” She also notes Bunnie XO merch had already sold out … two shows into the tour.

Despite no side stages, outfit or set changes, or encore, Phelan and Bennett emphasize the hold Jelly Roll had on the audience. “Jelly Roll fans obviously adore him, but they’re also rooting for him,” echoes Gates. “And he gives that love and support right back.”

The night was also a celebration of “Need A Favor” reaching No. 1 at Country radio, a milestone moment in topping both the Country and Rock formats While introducing his first No. 1, “Son Of A Sinner,” Jelly Roll acknowledged local radio stations for their early support, saying, “Some of the stations that played it the most are right here in Atlanta, [and] I need your help to show them how much they changed my life with this song.”

Before playing the final song of the night, “Save Me,” Jelly Roll thanked the attendees for buying tickets – “I want to thank y’all for paying that unreasonable fucking fee” – finding babysitters – “Some of y’all had to call an in-law you don’t even like” – sitting in traffic and finding a place to park. “I have never felt more at home than I have up here with y’all tonight, Georgia,” he said. “I know what a fucking headache it is to go to a concert, and I want to thank you for choosing to do that with me right here tonight ”

Gates was so impressed that the first thing she did when she got home was hit play on his Hulu doc. “You may think you know Jelly’s whole story, but that’s just the first couple of chapters,” she says. “How lucky are we to get to help write, read and listen to the rest of his novel?” Reach Gates here, Phelan here and Bennett here —Caitlin DeForest

Congratulations to Jelly Roll (Jason DeFord), Carson James, Shelley Hargis, Scotty O’Brien, Adrian Michaels and the Stoney Creek promotion team on taking “Need A Favor” to No. 1. Jelly Roll’s second Country single becomes his second No. 1 and is the fastest rising No. 1 for Stoney Creek since Randy Houser’s “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight” 10 years ago next month. Kudos to the Riser House team with Dillon Carmichael’s “Drinkin’ Problems” and the Big Loud team with Morgan Wallen’s “Thinkin’ Bout You,” each topping the CA/MB Add Board with eight.

Some Bunnie To Love: Phelan with Bunnie (c) and guest Dana.

After two consecutive weeks with songs scoring more than 130 adds, it was inevitable for space to be at a premium, but today’s Add Board sets the record for the smallest most-added number in the CA/MB/R&R add record archives, which dates back to 1979. The previous record low was set on March 11, 2005, when Van Zant’s “Help Somebody” and Pat Green’s “Baby Doll” tied with 10 each.

Q&A:WXTU’s Andie Summers

(continued from page 1)

Radio was the closest thing to doing that, but it seemed even more fun because it was just so much more real and the music is amazing. At the time, ‘90s country was alive and well, and I loved the opportunity to be myself behind the microphone, rather than being the person TV wanted me to be.

Do you remember the moment the music won you over?

It was literally my first shift – Saturday 8pm to midnight. I remember dancing in the studio and thinking, “I hope no one can see me in here.” WXTU is somewhat foundational to Beasley in the Country format. What makes it a good country market in your view?

The genuineness of the audience and the music. People ask, “Who’s the country artist you know that you just don’t like? Who isn’t nice?” I say, “There isn’t anyone in this business that doesn’t deserve to be here because everyone is themselves. You take them as they are and you trust it. The audience can see through them if not.” And that is Philadelphia to a T. They will accept you as long as you own who you are.

You Belong With Me: Andie Summers with Taylor Swift during her first visit to the station. “I saw her getting out of the car and thought, ‘This girl’s going to be such a brat – tall, long blonde hair, the cute little dress and her cowboy boots. This is ridiculous.’ Then we were talking to her and she said, ‘Why are you making that face?’ I said, ‘Honestly, you are the coolest chick I’ve ever met in my life, and I did not expect this.’ So when we took the picture, she suggested we live-out who I thought she would be. She was 15, and that was her idea. Amazing.

Does that describe your approach as well?

In the back of my mind, I always thought I was being myself. But I wanted myself to be many different things through the years. And I’ve learned a lot from those that I worked with along the way. The fun part for our audience may have been to see my personality mature over these last 24 years. When I started with the station I was single and dating my now husband. Everything was new – living on my own just trying to be cool. I remember thinking I had to be perfect and do everything. Eventually, you grow and accept how little you know and that you’ll make a lot of mistakes. That’s so much more relatable. But hey, people in their twenties are supposed to think they know it all.

You’ve won two Gracies, two CMAs as a personality and an ACM for the station during your tenure. Do you think about awards much?

I don’t think about it at all. We have an amazing staff at the station who are insistent that we go through air checks and put packages together, but it is not in the forefront of my mind. Not even a little bit. For the Gracies, I didn’t even know I had been entered. I didn’t know until Caroline Beasley called to tell me I had won. I was looking around the room like, what is she talking about?

You support a lot of charities and other good works. How do you decide which make sense for you?

The spirit just moves me. My daughter plays volleyball and I was talking to another mom who said there’s a club coach who needs a kidney. I don’t even know how it came up, but I was immediately like, “I’ll find him a kidney.” As the words are coming out of my mouth I’m thinking, “What am I saying?” I don’t know this man, but this is what I do and it’s what this community is all about. We had him on the air Wednesday along with another listener we had on a year ago to tell the story of being a kidney donor. We were inundated with phone calls. The first two we took were moms who had been ready to donate kidneys to their daughters but hadn’t been able to before they passed. In moments like that, you realize everyone needed to hear this. Each of those women said, “If I’m a match for George, I’m giving him my kidney.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. We’re all standing in the studio like, “How is this even real life?” That’s the power of Country radio.

That is amazing. Are there other moments that stand out as you reflect on 24 years?

I still run into people – especially around the anniversary date – who call in or tell me in person they were listening on 9/11. My parents were on a cross country flight from Pennsylvania to Washington that day for a cruise, so I was freaking out. They could have been on one of those planes. People didn’t have smartphones and were relying on us for the information, so I really tried to hold it together. But I broke down all of a sudden, to the dismay of my thenpartner, and just couldn’t do it. I lost it. But it was one of those very real moments that stays with people who were listening. I’m actually glad I had the wherewithal to give it up.

How do you manage work/life balance?

I married a guy who’s also married to his work, so this is just how we live. I never had to make apologies for doing something work related and vice versa. Once kids came into the mix, and he started traveling with work more, I had no choice but to make them my priority. I was blessed to have Shelly Easton as my PD at the time, because she totally understood and supported me. Also, every time I was out with a sick kid or on a field trip, that’s show prep and relatable to every listener either as a parent or the child of a parent being pulled in a million different directions. That definitely helped me feel more confident about my position at the radio station as well as being their mom.

Plus, you get to a point in your life where you’re like, if I have to choose my family over my work and my work doesn’t understand that, they don’t deserve me or my family. I was raised to be the hardest working person in the building and, as I grew older, I realized that didn’t always mean spending all the time, but spending smarter time. My co-host Jeff Kurkjian is in his twenties, he and his wife are having their first baby, and he is me at that age. It’s fun to watch his decisions and that process he goes through as he’s working his tail off.

The 16-track project boasts collaborations with Hailey Whitters (“Let It Flow”), Marcus King (“Heathen”) and Zac Brown (“When I Get Home”), the latter of whom also produced the album. Reflecting on how it came together, guitarist Caleb Miller shares, “Tennessee’s Waiting is our first full-length project in nearly four years, and we feel so grateful to have created it not only alongside each other as a band, but with some of our closest friends and mentors.”

Brett Young Across The Sheets (BMLGR)

Young’s eight-track, fourth studio album is a compilation of new (“Back To Jesus,” “Dance With You”) and old (Tim McGraw’s “Don’t Take The Girl,” “You Ain’t Here to Kiss Me”). “Across The Sheets is by far the most adventurous I’ve ever gotten thematically and lyrically,” he says. “I hope people hear my evolution as a songwriter and artist because I’m really proud of how much I allowed myself to pull back the curtain and let people see more of my life through my music.”
