KUZZ Passes The Morning Buck
(continued from page 1)
Just Be Kuzz: Learning from their own experience, Brakebill and Dumas facilitated a smoother handoff than they enjoyed three years ago when they took over for a station icon. “[Previous morning host] Steve [Gradowitz] had been here for 30 years,” Brakebill says. “The listeners didn’t like us too much at first, but Cliff was so seasoned. I watched him learn this community, and we finally won them over.”
“’Seasoned’ is a wonderful way to say ‘old,’” interjects Dumas, who arrived at KUZZ after doing mornings at KSON/San Diego. “When I came here, working for the Owens family was an immediate highlight. Seeing how powerful this station is in this market was really a throwback to what radio used to be like. You can’t go anywhere in Bakersfield without feeling the presence of KUZZ. When you step back and look at what an outlier this station is, we were able to end our show and introduce the new show in a positive way. To have personalities just disappear when changes are made is a crime against the listeners. So doing this the right way with Kenn and Ness has been an absolute career treat.”
“Kenn is going to be a great leader,” says Brakebill. “And Ness is basically me 20 years ago. She just started on air a year-and-a-half ago, but she’s so connected with her own life and with the listeners. She’s also a social media expert.”
“My advice is just to be their authentic selves and share their lives on the air,” adds Dumas. “In order to do that effectively, you must be true partners and that means living your life beyond the walls of the radio station. Radio is the original social media, and where do you turn in any community when you want a connection? You turn to the radio; you’re not going to get that from a playlist.”
Heard. “We are doing everything we can to make the show two friends that hang out every day,” McCloud says. “We talk about what’s happening in the world in a way that’s entertaining enough for our listeners to want to be a part of it too.” Adds Heraldez, “Radio is everything I thought it was going to be and then some. It’s a lot of work, and there’s a lot involved behind the scenes I had no idea about, but being a part of the Bakersfield community is really rewarding.”
For McCloud, the reward comes every morning. “Ever since I’ve been in Bakersfield this has been my biggest goal – doing mornings on this legendary station,” he says. “We are so proud to have that red, white and blue guitar logo around us. If this is my last job, I’m ok with that because this is the pinnacle.” Reach Brakebill here; Dumas here; Heraldez here and McCloud here
