Chart Year Update: More Morgan
In the final update before the official tally in Country Aircheck’s yearend print issue, the airplay chart share race and top songs of 2023 are coming into focus.

With five charting songs, two multi-week No. 1s and eight weeks with two songs simultaneously in the top 10, it should come as no surprise that Morgan Wallen has powered Big Loud to the top of the label ranking (see page 9). Meanwhile, Bailey Zimmerman has the top song so far (see Top 25, page 6).

Methodology: The 2023 chart year runs Nov. 6, 2022 to Nov. 11, 2023. Airplay points for this update were tabulated through Sept. 9, 2023. Songs that spent at least one week on the current chart in that window are credited for all current and recurrent airplay. Collaborations are credited to each artist’s label in full – each receives 100% of the airplay points amassed by the song. As always, airplay is from our friends and partners at Mediabase 24/7 Wallen’s five tracks (including “Thought You Should Know” [No. 2], “Last Night” [6] and “You Proof” [7]) are joined by Hardy’s collab with Lainey Wilson, “Wait In The Truck” (17) in boosting Big Loud’s 11.3% chart share more than two percentage points ahead of second place. Multiple releases from Luke Combs – “Going, Going, Gone” [9], “Fast Car” [24] and “Love You Anyway” [30]) – along with Old Dominion’s “Memory Lane” (26) fuel Columbia into the runnerup spot, ahead of MCA, which has two tracks from Jordan Davis (“What My World Spins Around” and “Next Thing You Know”) and Parker McCollum’s “Handle On You” within the top 30. As the end of the chart year approaches, and with two Wallen singles climbing the chart, the odds favor Big Loud claiming the Label of the Year title for the first time. The bigger question may be who is able to claim second place, with less than a percentage point separating Columbia and MCA.

Spotlighting inductees ahead of the Oct. 11 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala continues with Keith Urban. Beyond his own hits – ranging from first No. 1 “But For The Grace Of God” to the longest running song on Country Aircheck’s Power Gold 100 “Somebody Like You” – he’s also written songs recorded by other artists. Among them, Tyler Hubbard’s “Dancin’ In The Country,” Breland’s “Throw It Back” and a Christmas song that Toby

Keith may or may not have loved. See profiles of fellow inductees Kix Brooks here and Rafe Van Hoy here
At some point I realized the singer may not necessarily be the writer of the song, which was a shock. I thought Glen Campbell was this amazing songwriter who wrote “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston” and “By The Time I Get To Phoenix.” At whatever point I started reading credits I was like, “Who is Jimmy Webb? Why don’t more people know this guy?” The awareness that some people write all their material, some co-write and some don’t write at all – that there wasn’t any definitive way of going about it – has been reflected in my career of writing some, co-writing others and recording songs I didn’t write.
I was writing with Dave Loggins and asking him for advice. He slams his fist on the table, looks me in the eye and says, “If you’re going to take three minutes of my time, you better have something to say.” I was like, “Holy shit,” because Dave is a force to be reckoned with. But there’s definitely something to that. Even if it’s frivolous – sometimes people just need a cheeseburger rather than a steak – but have something to say.
Toby Keith cut a Christmas song I co-wrote somewhere in the ‘90s. “Jesus Gets Jealous Of Santa Claus.” I was at a bar on Lower Broadway one night, looked over in the corner and went, “Holy shit, that’s Toby Keith.” I’d never met him, but I’d heard that he had recorded our song. I went over, introduced myself and said, “I’m one of the writers on a song I think you just recorded.” He looks at me and goes, “Yeah, man, we cut it.” I said, “Oh, that’s great. Did you like the song?” He looks back and says, “We cut it, man.” I’m like, “That’s terrific. I appreciate it, but did you love the song?” He looks at me with this steely gaze and goes, “We cut it ... man.” I told Toby that story years later after I got to know him and he laughed, “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what was going on with me that day.”
I was extremely lucky to meet phenomenal writers early on – Dave Loggins, Harlan Howard, Kostas – eclectic, cool, really good songwriters. I learned so much on those trips downtown every day because it was not my comfort zone. A couple of legal pads and acoustics in a windowless room with a total stranger was not how I liked writing songs. My strengths weren’t in smart lyricism and crafted storytelling, they were

in melody, riffs, hooks and singability. So I love working with great lyricists who can help me flesh out the story.
Most of my career, it’s been one person. Early on, Vernon Rust, then Monty Powell and Richard Marx for a few songs. Recently, Chase McGill has been that for me in a big way. They can frame the story in a much stronger way than what I’m able to do. There are exceptions when a song comes out exactly the way I want to say it, solo. But I tend to have a higher bar with the lyrics and would rather spar with somebody who’s bringing strength in that area.

Going to the country festival in Tamworth, Australia every year from the age of nine, I remember seeing bumper stickers for a songwriting organization. Their motto was, “First, the song.” That stayed with me as a kid. If you’ve got a song, you can do something. If you don’t have a song, it’s all just smoke and mirrors. You’ve got to have the song. –Chuck Aly
