Gerry House Is Hall In

Newly named National Radio Hall of Fame inductee Gerry House will be in New York Nov. 2 for his big night, but his prior induction experiences may not be much help.

CA: Congratulations ... how did you hear?

GH: Well, thanks. Big news ... and thanks to [Country Aircheck’s Lon Helton]. I have a feeling he paid somebody off. He called and told me to keep that night open. I was pretty shocked. But it’s like my friend Waylon used to say, “It’s better to be seen than viewed.”

I don’t do much in that world anymore, but it’s good to hear from old friends. I immediately told my daughter [Red Light’s Autumn House-Tallant], who sent me a bunch of texts and emails she got starting Monday. And I heard from a lot of people, which was pretty cool.

When you’re not answering nice notes, what else are you into?

I’m still writing songs – not as much as I used to. I paint, play a little golf and my wife Allyson and I are Uber for our grandkids. We have 10-yearold twins, a boy and a girl, and both play four sports. It’s something every night. And I still write jokes occasionally for people. Now I’m trying to figure out who’s going to introduce me for the hall – and I’ll wind up writing that, too, so it’s really glowing.

Is there another book project to follow Country Music Broke My Brain?

I have an idea and have written several parts of it. But I was talking to Martina McBride at one point and told her the book experience was really rough for me. She’d put one out and agreed – she hated it, too. The [book publishers] were lovely people, but it’s very difficult and very competitive. Unless you have a platform, it’s almost impossible to get it going, and mine came out about a year after I went off the air. My timing was impeccable.

Jonas, Nashville & The World

Tourist buses frequently stop outside Jonas Group Entertainment’s new Nashville office on 17th Ave. S. so passengers can snap pictures of the sign while the driver tells them about famous songs created there over the years. But inside the historic cottage, CEO Phil Guerini is more interested in the future than the past.

Founded by Kevin Jonas Sr., JGE opened its Nashville headquarters June 4 with management clients including MaRynn Taylor (Black River), Harper Grace (Curb), Levi Hummon and Mandy Harvey. The publishing side, led by creative veteran Leslie DiPiero, is home to singer-songwriter Terri Jo Box and Franklin Jonas, who at 22 is the youngest sibling of the pop star brothers.

I’m Not Petty: Columbia’s Megan Moroney with iHeart’s  Phillips at the Music City Grand Prix Gerry House Phil Guerini

.

Guerini joined JGE in 2021 (CAT 5/19/21) following more than 20 years at Disney, where he first worked with the Jonas family.

He supported Disney’s Lyric Street Records and spent five years leading Radio Disney Country, where he became more familiar with Nashville’s diversity and talent. “I came to know Nashville not as Country Music City USA, but as Music City USA,” he says. “The songwriters, producers, musicians and artists were undoubtedly some of the most talented people I had been exposed to.” Though Guerini was formerly based in Los Angeles, Nashville made the most sense for JGE’s new headquarters.

“Jonas Group Entertainment is intentionally set on Music Row because the core of everything we do starts with music, and therefore starts with the song,” Guerini says. “We seek to be collaborative and to be a contributor to this marketplace and all of its partners. It takes a village.” In particular, a village with fewer fences.

“Audiences today put together playlists defined by what they like, and that means a country song will play alongside a pop song,” Guerini says. “As someone who spent the better part of my life in radio, that is an evolution. In large part, consumers’ listening habits are being less defined by the genre or format, of which they specifically listen to one radio station or outlet and are only being fed those types of songs. Our potential for greatest success moving forward is genuinely to embrace it all.”

How I Met Your Brother: EMI Nashville’s Brothers Osborne at the Resch Expo Complex Plaza in Green Bay, WI. Pictured (l-r) are WNCY/Appleton-Green Bay’s Dan Stone, WMIL/Milwaukee’s Shanna “Quinn” Cudeck, TJ Osborne, WNCY’s Charli McKenzie, John Osborne and the label’s John Trapane Peter Pan: Guerini with Kelsea Ballerini, an introduction made by his former Lyric Street colleague Greg McCarn. Through that label relationship, Guerini would go on to manage Black River’s MaRynn Taylor. Here 3000: Guerini with the Jonas Brothers.

That approach is playing out across JGE’s roster. Coming highlights include Hummon’s new track with Walker Hayes “Payin’ For It,” a theatrical release featuring Harvey and Grace’s UK debut in October. The younger Jonas debuted at Stagecoach earlier this year and recently co-hosted ABC’s Claim To Fame. Rooted in Nashville, Jonas Group is focused on growing outward. “To continue to build upon the city’s legacy and make a difference with our artists and songwriters in the community – that will be goal-achieved,” Guerini says.

Congratulations to Justin Moore, Chris Palmer, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory promotion team, and Priscilla Block, Damon Moberly, Miranda McDonald and the Mercury promotion team on taking “You, Me, And Whiskey” to No. 1. It is the 12th chart-topper for Moore and the first for Block. Songwriters are Jessi Alexander, Brock Berryhill and Cole Taylor

Kudos to Lauren “LT” Thomas and the Columbia crew on racking up 47 adds for Megan Moroney’s “I’m Not Pretty.” It is Moroney’s first time to top the CA/MB Add Board.

Priscilla Block and Justin Moore Crawl Space: The House Foundation in the early 2000s (l-r): Mike Bohan, Richard Falklen, House, Duncan Stewart and Al Voecks.

It was during the day and there were a lot, so that kind of cleaned the room out. I actually said to one guy getting up for that, “Thanks for making the rest of us look bad.” By the time they got to me, most people said, “Let’s get outta here.” Then I thanked the room as a songwriter, since they played some of my songs. But I said I wished radio got along better with the music industry, and it got very quiet.

The Tennessee Radio Hall was unusual. They were going to have Martina bring me on – we’re great friends – but nobody asked her, so someone else had to get up there. There are only so many people in Tennessee you can honor; I guess they finally got down to me. Like the Radio Hall of Fame did. “Is there anybody left?” But it’s a good group going in. We’re all about the same age. I’m 100.

You described yourself as a college radical ... what would that version of you think of this induction?

I was pretty far left. The Vietnam War was going on, the country was in turmoil and all my professors were radicals. I went to read one of my radical speeches on the campus radio station and, when I finished, asked the station manager what he thought. He said, “I don’t agree with anything you said, but I liked the way you said it. You want to come back and try out for radio?” In order to get in, you had to be middle of the road, so I immediately dropped all my brilliant, radical ideas. Sold them down the river so I could get going in radio. I have a feeling that kid would go, “Wow, that changed!”

What would your parents have thought?

My father was an electrician who couldn’t understand why they didn’t teach electricity at my university, and my mother thought if the signal from WSM-AM to Kentucky was weak it was because too many people were listening at the same time.

Whoever’s In Nashville: Autumn House, Allyson House, Reba and House on Labor Day 1999 at Reba’s place. Splashing in the pool (not shown) was Hillary Scott, later of Lady A, who was about 12 at the time.

She thought listeners pulled the signal out of the air until it was gone. They were sweet and wonderful, and that was their understanding of what I did for a living. But they were both very funny, and I grew up listening to radio people in Cincinnati – their characters, jokes and bits. David Letterman did the same thing. I was drawn to that because I’m basically a writer. I tried to write 25 jokes a day. Then I’d go in a little room, talk in a funny voice and laugh at myself on the air. Very schizophrenic.

Made plans for New York yet?

No, I just got the information. I think the seats are kind of expensive, so Allyson and I will stand in the kitchen. But I’m looking forward to it.

Kelsea Ballerini Rolling Up The Welcome Mat (For Good) (Black River)

The deluxe edition features a full-length interlude, updated tracks and a brand new song, “How Do I Do This.” “It’s kinda scary opening a wound that time has mended, but this unexplainably transformative welcome mat had one last bit of rolling up to do,” she shared. “From the deepest and purest part of my heart, I ask that you help this be ours and let the music simply be the music, not dig back into the experience that it was written about nearly a year ago.”
