Q&A: All Things Storme

The newly minted face and voice of Sevens Radio Networks’ The Big 615 – alongside some guy named Garth – Storme Warren has a lot going on. Below, he discusses leaving SiriusXM, the many hats he wears and how Brooks almost made him cry.

CA: What has surprised you about this new journey?

SW: How instantly comfortable it is with a team I could not have more pride in. Garth and Bob handpicked a dream team and somehow included me. There’s no conflict and it has nothing to do with ego. This has to do with having fun, joy, love and spreading country music around the globe.

You’re doing a daily show and a countdown. Operationally, what’s that workload?

I don’t have to get up at 4am anymore, so that’s a plus. I still do a six-hour daily morning show, but I have to take into account that it isn’t morning everywhere we are reaching. We’re taking the word “morning” out of The Storme Warren Show. I treat it as live as possible until we have our live technology in place – I’m not pre-tracking four shows. Morning of, the first track that goes in is just minutes before air. We track as if it were live.

I’ve been doing a live show for so long. I know what it sounds like to be tracked way ahead of time and I just can’t do that. There’s too much happening in social media, news cycles and people’s lives. One of the most important things is listener interaction. As they reach out on socials, with emails or voice memos, they’re thinking in real time and I want to be there with them.

Have you gotten any feedback from people who knew you from SiriusXM?

Yeah, of course. They’re giving it a shot and seem to be pleased with the product. More importantly, people that have never heard of me are reaching out from Ghana, Barbados, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, the UK, Canada, Mexico, South Africa and South America. (continued on page 5)

Tour Launch: Sam Hunt

MCA’s Sam Hunt kicked off his Summer On The Outskirts Tour Thursday evening (7/6) at Xfinity Theatre in Hartford, CT. The trek marks Hunt’s first full-fledged tour since 2017’s 15 In A 30 Tour, and iHeartMedia WWYZ/Hartford APD/MD/morning co-host

Amanda Jo Parker was there to catch all the sights and sounds for Country Aircheck

Big Loud’s Lily Rose opened the show. “[She] represented wearing a Boston Red Sox hat,” says Parker. “The crowd was singing ‘Villian’ back to her by the end of the set.” Rose was followed by BMLGR’s Brett Young. “He was rocking a Sam Hunt concert tee and prepped the crowd for a good cry before heading into ‘Mercy.’”

The audience was primed for Hunt’s nearly twodozen song set, which kicked off with “Raised On It.”

“By song number two, ‘House Party,’ Sam jumped off the stage to walk around the lower sections,” adds Parker. “He had the crowd going during ‘Start Nowhere,’ which he capped with a cover of John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads.’”

Parker says Hunt enjoyed getting into the crowd, “Later he jumped off stage again for ‘Make You Miss Me’ before making his way to a smaller side stage.” It was there he performed “Take Your Time” and “Cop Car.” Returning to the main stage, Hunt reeled off “Wishful Drinking,” “Leave The Night On” and “We Are Tonight;” the latter was a hit for Billy Currington and one of the first songs to put Hunt on the map as a songwriter.

“The most impressive part of the show was the lighting and large bridge that were on the stage for ‘Water Under The Bridge’ and his new single ‘Outskirts,’” says Parker. “The bridge rose up and the staging below was made to look like a flowing river.” Hunt closed out the show with the Montevallo favorite “Ex To See” and his biggest hit, “Body Like A Back Road.” Reach Parker here; complete list of upcoming tour dates here

OFF THE RECORD

Warner/WEA’s Michael Ray goes Off (The Record): More than grown, I’ve come to trust myself and my sense of what country is. When I was growing up, country was what you heard in a dive bar or maybe on a jukebox at a Waffle House. Haggard, Conway, Hank Jr., Willie, Waylon and Jones. People drop those names a lot, but where I’m from, that was serious listening. On Dive Bars & Broken Hearts, I really trusted that there are enough people out there, like me, who want to hear that kind of country.

When I started working with Michael Knox on this project, it was about a sound more than a theme. I’ve had a sound in my head for the last few years based on the country I was raised on through my dad and my grandfather. That’s what I wanted to get to. The more Michael and I talked, the more I could tell, he got what I was saying.

If you’ve played any time in a local bar, the album title sums it all up. You stand up there, playing and watching it all happen. And it feels like the bigger the heartbreak, the seedier the bar you’re gonna look for. Not sleazy, just broke down and seen some things. That’s what I loved about dive bars growing up – watching people move through life. So, this title captures that.

One of my favorites is “Don’t Give A Truck.” Rian Ball, John Phillips, Michael Tyler and I were just sitting around, talking about ‘70s and ‘80s country and listening to “Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.” I love the spirit of that song. If you give a boy a truck, it’s a license to get into all kinds of trouble. But also, it’s a license to live life, to have fun and test your limits. You know once you give a boy a truck, they’re gonna get gone, but they’re also on their way. What could be better?

“Spirits & Demons” really stood out when we heard it. It’s one of the most complete, boil-it-down ways of capturing how alcohol can pull you under, can numb your pain … but can also be the thing that undoes you. I loved the song when it wasn’t a duet, but it felt like it could – and should – be so much more. When we added Meghan (Patrick), who’s been a beerdrinking buddy for years, she took it up three levels!

And then “Workin’ On It,” because it’s about redemption, accepting that people mess up and people get better. Every single one of us has those things, and we’re all trying to move beyond them, too. When we were in the studio and the band kicked in, it was like time travel to some of those great Brooks & Dunn records. You just wanna move to it, and it was like that from the first run-through.

The reaction so far has been great. When you press into something that’s true to who you are, you worry people may not get it. It’s more than not liking my music, it’s not liking where I come from in a lot of ways. This music is personal. So the positive response – the cheering for these songs and even singing along at shows – tells me people like who I am and where I come from. And that feels great.

Q&A: All Things Storme

(continued from page 1)

Bob Richards, Monta Vaden, Blake Carter, Jonny Jazzno and Maurice Miner sharing ideas and collaborating is almost unbelievable. The decisions are ultimately Garth’s, but I can’t do my job as well if I haven’t been part of that process. Being invested in the music we’re sharing and the artists we’re introducing is game changing.

What did you learn in satellite radio that prepared you for this?

Because we had North American reach at SiriusXM, I learned to connect map dots from New Brunswick to San Diego to New York to Chicago ... rather than approach it like a local Nashville station. Make everybody feel like they’re a part of the same crew. I overuse the word family, but that’s what country music fans are. It sounds very Garthlike, but he’s right and I’ve always believed it. The most valuable thing I learned through Sirius is how small the universe is. Now with the global reach, it’s my job to make the world feel the same way.

Did you have shaky knees leaving Sirius after ...

Sixteen or 17 years? That’s not a number I kept track of until I read it in Country Aircheck. I was like, “God, was I doing it that long?”

We’re building a global map and each time we hear from somebody we’re putting a push pin in it. It’ll be interesting to see how quickly that fills up.

What’s different relative to Sirius?

Unlimited potential. SiriusXM and The Highway are very successful brands that have reached all kinds of heights. Starting fresh and with a clean slate and new perspective is what’s most exciting. Sitting with

So, yeah. It was a marriage and any time you sever a relationship like that – especially on good terms, at least from my perspective and, I assume from SiriusXM’s perspective – it’s the end of an era. My gut said it might be time for a change. I needed a sign, and the sign came by the man known as Garth. Was it nerve wracking? Sure. We’re leaping into the great unknown.

What about the rest of Storme, Inc? I just saw the Covenant School benefit you’re hosting, and there’s certainly much more than that. You’re America’s Host at this point ...

I was a little bit nervous about all of those obligations because I’ve run into a bit of friction in the past regarding overlapping responsibilities. But I still believe getting out of the studio box is helpful to what I ultimately do. Garth goes, “Well, what do you have going on?” I went through the list as it stood for the rest of the year. And there was plenty. He goes, “Those are your people. Do your job and get out there.” I almost wanted to cry.

Is there a book in your future?

Yes. People have been asking when they could read the story of how I got here. I never think it’s that interesting until I start telling stories. There have been some interesting journeys along the way. That’s probably in the nearer future than far. We’ve also got a kid’s book coming – Russell The Grey & White Guinea Pig, which is based on a Christmas song I cowrote with David Fanning. It’s the story of how Russell, our family guinea pig, saved Christmas Day. We’re making a book, a plush toy and all that fun stuff.

Two weeks ago we launched the Exit 209 Songwriters Series at the Twelve Thirty Club, Justin Timberlake’s place on upper Broadway. Three songwriters, a Q&A and cocktails 3-5pm Wednesdays – an extension of my Exit 209 podcast, which will also continue.

What’s the plan for staffing your show?

It’s going to be very small. Even when I did my TV show, Headline Country, for almost a decade-and-a-half, I saw operations that were too cumbersome. They couldn’t maneuver. I’ve always believed in a very slim team, and TuneIn does, too. That was attractive. I’m probably going to have a producer to bounce stuff off of, but that’s it. And it won’t be somebody who’s been in this business for 40 years – it’s going to be someone who still wants to learn.

What else?

I’m on the board of Directors for Operation Song, which teams songwriters with veterans so they have a musical and creative way to share bottled up stories. It’s more therapy than art, but the art comes out of that catharsis. I’m still carrying a flag for Charlie Daniels’ Journey Home Project, which also helps our veterans. I’m also on the board of ACM Lifting Lives.

You’re everywhere...

I’ve never done it differently, so it doesn’t seem odd.

CHECKOUT

Alana Springsteen Figuring It Out (Columbia/Sony)

Co-produced with Chris LaCorte, the second installment of her three-part debut album, Twenty Something, features six songs all co-penned by Springsteen. “Twenty Something” was written alongside Liz Rose, AJ Pruis and Trannie Anderson during a retreat at Rose’s beach house.

Tyler Farr Rednecks Like Me (BBR)

Marking the first time Farr has co-written every song on an EP or album, the Jason Aldean, Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy-produced project features a collaboration with Jelly Roll on closer “Country As Shit.”

Kristian Bush Drink Happy Thoughts (—)

The summer-themed, seven-song EP was written over three weeks. “I hope you put it on and listen all summer long, in a boat, by a pool, in the ocean, or by a beach,” he says. “Take me with you.”
