BBR, Wallen, Lynch & Porter Lead ‘22

After 13 years, there’s a new airplay chart share champ: Broken Bow Records, fueled in no small part by the year’s No. 1 song, Dustin Lynch f/MacKenzie Porter’s “Thinking ‘Bout You.” Full data on 2022 airplay, including the Top 100 songs, Top Performers and label chart share, are out this week in Country Aircheck’s year-end print issue ... but here’s the topline: Likely no surprise, but Morgan Wallen was the most-heard artist overall, followed by Jason Aldean, Luke Combs, Lynch and Carrie Underwood. The latter leads the Female category, edging Miranda Lambert, who is followed by Lainey Wilson, Maren Morris and Kelsea Ballerini. Zac Brown Band are the top Duo/Group, and Jackson Dean is the top New Artist.

After the Lynch/Porter top song, Cody Johnson’s “Til You Can’t” is No. 2, Aldean & Underwood’s “If I Didn’t Love You” is No. 3, Parmalee’s “Take My Name” is No. 4 and Wallen’s “Sand In My Boots” rounds out the top five.

As for the Label of the Year battle, it was a photo finish between BBR with 9.58% of airplay, and 13-year reigning champs Capitol, who amassed 9.56%. Those two, along with third-place Big Loud (9.0%) were well aware of how close the race was as the year wound down.

“I was a dog on a bone,” BBR co-VP/Promotion Lee Adams says of the drive to the finish. “Last year, we had the opportunity to be top five, so knowing how close we were this year, I drilled down on every song and rotation.”

Radiothons: Country Radio Strong

Country radio showed its power this past week, as dozens of stations aired their annual radiothons, the vast majority benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Across the 53 stations for which Country Aircheck collected results, a total of more than $14 million dollars was raised. Radiothons are demanding, require long hours and can be emotionally draining, but this list (pg. 8) is proof positive that all the effort is worth it. Country Aircheck salutes all those involved for a job well done.

Congratulations to Luke Bryan, Royce Risser, Bobby Young, David Friedman and the Capitol promotion team on taking

“Country On” to No. 1 this week. Jumping from sixth place is the largest move into the top spot since LoCash made the same six-to-one leap with “One Big Country Song” in Aug. 2020. This is Bryan’s 28th No. 1 as a lead artist and his 30th including collaborations; it also comes almost exactly 13 years to the day after his first, “Do I,” hit the top on Dec. 14, 2009. Bryan is now tied with Blake Shelton in seventh place for most all-time No. 1s as a lead artist. Songwriters are Mark Nesler, David Frasier, Mitch Oglesby and Styles Haury. And kudos to Kristen Williams and the Warner/WEA promotion team on notching 63 adds for Bailey Zimmerman’s “Rock And A Hard Place” to top this week’s Add Board. The track, which has already logged 19 weeks on the CA Activator chart, debuts at No. 40 on the main chart this week.

News & Notes

Blue Chair/Warner/WEA’s Kenny Chesney is honoring his rescue dog, Ruby – who passed away last week – with the release of fan-favorite “Da Ruba Girl,” a song inspired by Ruby. (continued from page 1)

Adds co-VP Shelley Hargis Gaines, “From the early days when no indie labels were really on the map, we had to be scrappy. We could easily have gotten jaded, but I challenge any rookie in the business to match our tenacity and passion.” Newly elevated BBRMG VP & BBR Southeast regional Scotty O’Brien has questions about the chart share victory. “It’s very exciting, but my understanding is it doesn’t come with a bonus, a free lunch, balloons, dinner or cake. So, it’s almost more interesting what it doesn’t mean.” (Ed. Note: Actually, Scotty, cake was provided [see photo, page 1].)

Top Stories, Miranda & More

Beyond the year in music, Country Aircheck’s December issue looks at Top Stories of 2022, gets the awards week travelog for CMA Radio Award winners, previews labels’ top new music priorities for 2023 and, in The Interview, asks Miranda Lambert about her ever-expanding brand.

Among the changes in Lambert’s life is her residency, the Velvet Rodeo. “We moved 23 people to Vegas,” she says.

“That’s a pretty big dang deal, telling the road crew, ‘All right guys, try something new.’” For someone whose career was built, in part, on relentless touring, it’s also an adjustment. “I recently took [my bus] down to see my grandpa in Texas just because she needed a ride, but I didn’t have my bus legs under me. I was like, ‘Oh, this is a scary feeling not being used to the bus rolling.’ But it’s just for a time. I’m not really touring for the next year-and-a-half, so Vegas is kind of it. I’m inviting the change, and the crowds have been amazing. It’s an opportunity for people to see me who haven’t had me in their market.”

By The Numbers: Country’s 2022 didn’t post many feelgood stats. In PPM markets, Country radio is down in both share and cume. Country’s market share of recorded music was down slightly, as well. The issue also includes the In Memoriam list of industry pros who passed this year, but it does not include this sobering statistic: The number of Chronicle obituaries Country Aircheck wrote in 2022 was 102, two shy of last year’s all-time high. In fact, the five-year low of 51 in 2018 rose to 54 in 2019, 92 in 2020 and 104 last year.

Nevertheless, the business continues to build careers –professionally and artistically. And the nationwide small town inhabited by everyone from promotion interns at far-flung radio stations to C-suite Nashville execs remains in it together. Lambert gets the last word: “Country has always been very good about supporting each other,” she says. “Country music is a family. We’re not all best friends. Everybody doesn’t always get along or like each other’s music all the time. [But] I don’t ever want it to divide. Everybody shares in this passion for country music, and that’s what bonds us, even though we’re all different.”
