LA (Louisiana) Gold
If, as Cole Swindell sings, you’re a ‘90s country fan, you may want to visit Lafayette, LA. Not only is market No. 118 home to one of the largest concentrations of Country signals per capita, it’s also one of the few markets with multiple gold-based Country outlets.
In the Spring Nielsen ratings, currentbased Townsquare KMDL “97.3 The Dawg” leapt from 7.4 to 10.0 for its best showing in six years. Cumulus KXKC slid to ninth, and on Labor Day weekend, just a month after the ratings were released, the station made a surprise shift, dropping all currents to focus on the ‘90s. Finishing 12th was Delta Media KOGM “Mustang 107.1,” which was already primarily ‘90s-based. Additionally, Broadcast Partners Classic Country KPCZ “Freedom 106.7” covers the western half of the market with a ‘90s lean, and both Baton Rouge stations (Guaranty WTGE and iHeartMedia WYNK) put city-grade signals over most of the market.
Stuck In The Middle: “We felt we were just going to be stuck where we were,” KXKC PD Bobby Novosad says of his station’s Spring finish. “So, that’s why we made the change. All I hear is ‘The music is not the same.’ We decided, why battle that anymore?”
Having successful gold-based sisters including KPLX/Dallas and WSM-FM/ Nashville simplified the process. “We used those stations to create the library with [VP/Music Partnerships] Greg Frey and [VP/Country] Charlie Cook , and from there we tweaked it,” adds Novosad. “There are only so many ‘90s songs you can play. It’s how you play them, when you play them and how often you play them that’s going to make it work, and we’ll be bringing songs in and out to keep it fresh.

This Shirt Makes A Comeback
Coinciding with the start of the PPM Holiday Book, Country Cares For St. Jude Kids radiothons get underway in earnest Thursday and Friday (12/8-9). In fact, St. Jude has 103 partner events this month, 70 of which are Country. And making its return after a few years off – This Shirt Saves Lives.
Launched five years ago, the shirt went through multiple iterations. “We went to the We Won’t Stop shirts as a response to the pandemic,” says ALSAC/St. Jude Dir./Country Cares Scott Hinshelwood. “Last year, we went to Love Music Stop Cancer, but you’d still see artists wearing This Shirts onstage or socials. We realized, we built This Shirt, we just need to keep building on it.”

OFF THE RECORD
Stoney Creek’s Parmalee answers who’s most like to …
Spend the most time getting ready: Matt
I’m definitely guilty of trying on different outfits at the last minute. That’s usually what I’m doing … and looking for my phone and wallet.
Get a terrible tattoo: Everyone
PARMALEE
We all have some tats that seemed like a good idea at the time.
End up on Broadway: Matt
I feel like you never plan on going to Broadway, it just happens. And when it does, it’s always a big ol’ party!
Join a cult: Josh or Barry … but probably Josh.
Oversleep: Matt
I’m the only one who’s not married. I tend to stay out later than these guys do.
Get hangry: Scott
Scott is a three-meal-a-day guy. It’s pretty easy to tell when the hangry is setting in. Get him a protein bar!
Ask to see the manager: Barry
He’s the dad in the group, so we let him handle the managers. Rack up the most screen time: Scott … is literally always on his phone.
Do the latest TikTok dance(s): Barry
He’s good with figuring out dances/tricks/etc. Barry can juggle … and Crip Walk.
Scream when they see a spider: No one We’re good with spiders, but let a snake creep up on us, and there’s a pretty good chance all of us will hit some high notes!
WGAR/Cleveland PD/mornings and Country Cares Advisory Board chair Carletta Blake explains, “We had such a good campaign with the original grey then black, so we thought maybe we would switch things up. We didn’t want it to get stale. We thought the ‘We Won’t Stop’ campaign was really strong in 2020 given all that was going on in the world. Last year, we had the Love Music shirt, but in talking about TSSL, we realized it was a universal message that really resonated with everyone. As far as look, it’s a really great unisex shirt and super attention grabbing. “Every time I wear it, I get
at least one person asking about it. It’s a conversation piece.”
“We’ve had more than a million shirts out over the last almostsix-years,” Hinshelwood adds. “Celebrities are asking about it when they come to the hospital. It’s taken on its own iconic brand.” Now that it’s back, the campaign is aimed at bringing in more than 25,000 Partners In Hope this month.
The feedback has already been strong. “Everybody seems pumped that it’s back and with a new navy version,” Hinshelwood says. “We’ve also got a lot of new influencers from the influencer track we did at Country Cares Seminar involved this year.” St. Jude also added radiothons at KKBQ/Houston and KBAY/San Jose and is testing offering Partners a hoodie/zipper jacket with WWYZ/ Hartford and KYGO/Denver
“This year will be interesting, with everything going on in the economy and politics,” Blake says. “But even with inflation, it doesn’t seem like spending is slowing down. Black Friday was the biggest in four or five years, and we just had the largest Giving Tuesday since its inception. If people can spend more in those ways, we should do well.”
And she, of course, will be right in the thick of it later this week, going on-air 13 hours straight Dec. 8 and 9 with co-host Wazz. “We started doing two long days like that in 2020 out of necessity,” Blake says. “Not having as many people in the studio sharing mics. But it worked so well, we did it again last year, and now it’s the new formula.”
The Country Aircheck staff wishes Blake, Hinshelwood and everyone involved in Country Cares and other good works this season all the best. Please send tote board totals, associated news and photos here. To become a Partner In Hope (and get the shirt!) please go to MusicGives.org

LA (Louisiana) Gold
The KXKC brain trust resisted the idea of a broad-based ‘70s-’90s approach. “That gets watered down,” Novosad says. “It’s obvious people want [the ‘90s]. People who grew up with it are the ideal demo you would want for a radio station.”
The shift included refining more than just the music. “We’ve gone much more local,” he says. “We hardly have any syndication and have a great staff with Danita Maldanado [mornings,] Troy Leger [afternoons] and Cory Melancon [middays].”
Novosad has been programming in the market for more than 30 years, first with Top 40 sister KSMB, then adding oversight of KXKC five years ago. “I wasn’t a total country music expert, but I grew up around ‘90s country,” he notes. “I know it’s cliché, but it’s one good song after another. With current country, you can’t always say that, but with this format, you don’t want to turn it off.”
No Horsing Around: “It is strange we have so many Country stations,” admits KOGM Station Captain Tanya Ardoin, who’s been with the station since it launched 10 years ago. “It seems like everybody wants to play ‘90s country now. I’m not surprised KXKC switched, but Mustang is different – we just focus on playing good music and listening to our listeners.

“We include some ‘80s and 2000s,” Ardoin explains. “One good thing about Delta Media is it’s locally owned, so I have a lot of freedom. We play some local favorites, a little Red Dirt music and some currents like Morgan Wallen, Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean that fit the real country sound, but we focus heavily on the ‘90s.”

With so much market exposure for those titles, is Ardoin concerned about burnout? “I don’t have any control over what other stations play,” she surmises. “There are so many Country stations, I have to focus on providing the best product I can.”
In The Dawg House: KMDL PD Jude Walker relishes having the market’s current position to himself. “We know what our core competency as a station is,” he says. “There’s a popular belief that people around here prefer a more traditional sound, thus the lean towards older tunes. You can still serve that sector of the country audience without abandoning new country. There are several acts, in my opinion, that fill that lane.”
Despite KMDL’s position, Walker says you can still hear some ‘90s on the station, pointing out, “We have a ‘Throwback Thursday’ feature, and we have our Classic Country Saturday night show that has been a staple for years and is extremely highly rated.”
Hooked On Classics: Novosad maintains there is plenty of appetite for his station’s focus decade. “We find the market in general, not just Country, is a classic kind of market,” he says. “The majority of concerts that come to the Cajundome are country, and the majority of those are artists like Brooks & Dunn, Reba and Jason Aldean. And every one of those shows was either a sell out or very close.”
Nielsen’s Fall ratings, and the first report card on KXKC’s shift, are still more than a month away, but Novosad has no doubt about the station’s future. “We have sellers who are getting unsolicited comments from advertisers, and we have listeners telling us they love the switch. This change has created more feedback than anything else we’ve done. We’ve got a great signal, a great staff and we’ve got the music, so why couldn’t we make it work?” Reach Novosad here, Ardoin here and Walker here.
