Silverfish: Business Unusual

Though Big D & Bubba’s Derek “Big D” Haskins and Sean “Bubba” Powell have been teamed for more than two decades and will celebrate 22 years of syndication next week, the pair and producer Patrick Thomas did not set out on their own until eight years ago (CAT 9/10/13). Thomas and Jessica “Carsen” Humphreville, who now serve as Pres. and Dir./Programming of Silverfish Media, respectively, join the duo in sharing the company’s story – which most recently celebrated adding WKDF/ Nashville as an affiliate. “Everything started with Derek Haskins the three of us [Haskins, Powell and Thomas] deciding to strike out on our own, away from Premiere, so that we could work for ourselves,” explains Thomas. “It Jessica Humphreville wasn’t that we were thinking of expanding to Sean Powell additional shows or dayparts, but we believed we could create exceptional content with fantastic partners and super-serve affiliates within a boutique company.” Upon the 2013 launch, the Silverfish team partnered with Compass Networks Founder/CEO Peter Kosann for distribution; secured Albright & O’Malley & Brenner’s Becky Brenner as a consultant; and contracted Katie Cline Patrick Thomas Moore, Mike Buckner and David Angell as Mgr./Business, engineer and production/ voiceover artist, respectively. “Mike conceptualized and built our studios from the ground up, and with that, Silverfish Media was officially born,” Thomas says. Cody Alan On Listening & Writing

Premiere’s CMT After MidNite host Cody Alan released his memoir, Hear’s The Thing: Lessons On Listening, Life & Love Nov. 9 amid a week that also saw him picking up his first CMA Broadcast Award for Daily National Personality of the Year. He unpacked the inspiration and process for his first book with Country Aircheck. How did you settle on a title and theme for the project? I knew I had a story to tell that started with growing up loving music and radio, and I realized there was a theme of listening that ran throughout. Listening is key to creating content but also applies to having to listen to my own heart in my career when deciding the path I wanted to take, and in my personal life and finding love. Aside from listening, other themes include faith, family and fearlessness. Were you at all concerned about sharing Cody Alan some of your more personal beliefs?
