Medal Health: Three Join Hall

More than two years have passed since the CMA Theater in the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum has seen an expansion of the genre’s unbroken circle, but the hallowed hall finally grew Sunday night (11/21). Dean Dillon, Marty Stuart and Hank Williams, Jr. were the focus and, concurrently, a prism through which the entirety of country music – as artform and business – can be viewed, understood and revered. Impeccably emceed as usual by CMHoF&M CEO Kyle Young, the gathering began with a moment of silence for Hall of Famers who’ve passed to the rotunda beyond: Charlie Daniels, Charley Pride, Harold Reid, Kenny Rogers, Tom T. Hall and Don Everly. Each of the 2020 honorees was celebrated with a video package, remarks from Young, three performances and an induction speech. High On A Mountain Top: For Stuart, the music opened with the singing and Hammond B-3 stylings of Pastor Evelyn Hubbard, who performed “It’s Time To Go Home.” She was followed by Hall of Famer Emmylou Harris on “Tempted” – with guitar solo by Charlie Worsham – and Ashley McBryde on “The Observations Of A Crow.” An inductee in 2012, Connie Smith choked up as she welcomed him, saying, “I’m as proud of who he is as I am of all he’s accomplished, and I’m very proud of his achievements. He’s earned and he deserves to be in this hall of fame.” She then placed the medallion around his neck.

– one of the most common forms of childhood cancer – from 73% to 94%. Opening last week’s (11/17) virtual St. Jude Country Cares Seminar, ALSAC Pres./CEO Rick Shadyac both applauded those accomplishments. Included in the former, a record $66 million raised last year, despite the pandemic. Shadyac urged continued support to help St. Jude accelerate research and treatment for children not only in the U.S. but around the world. In partnership with the World Health Organization, ALSAC has set a goal of raising the survival rates for six of the most common forms of pediatric cancer from 20% to 60% by 2030. “It’s time to better spread it around the world, while at the same time searching for cures, so we can reach the day that our founder, Danny Thomas, dreamed of ... when no child, no child anywhere, dies in the dawn of life,” said Shadyac. Among the artist appearances was a special moment between Keith Urban Rick Shadyac and Nicole Kidman and patients Maelin and Clayton – the latter showing off his guitar and requesting a performance of “Wild Hearts.” Lady A, Carly Pearce and Jimmie Allen offered the reveal of another fittingly-named initiative, the “Love Music Stop Cancer” t-shirts. “This theme is corresponding with our mission, as music unites us, it heals, it changes lives, just like St. Jude,” noted Advisory Board member Carletta Blake, who along with fellow Board members including Lauren Thomas, presented new and returning resources and assets for stations hosting radiothons. A social element has been added to the Partner In Hope shirts with the #MusicGives hashtag beginning now, followed by a heavy push in early December. “To help create this buzz, we need all of you, industry leaders and all of the station staff, to post a pic in your own shirt on your socials ahead of the event,” encouraged Blake. The programming and digital kits are available on Brand Central. The programming kit features artist liners, talking points, facts and story songs (including four new ones), while the digital kit contains web banners, gifs, social videos, dozens of images of artists and patients wearing the new shirt, recommended social posts and St. Jude logos. Bill Mayne, were honored with the Randy Owen Angels Among Us Award by its namesake. “I can truthfully say, in my opinion, that Country Cares For St. Jude Kids would not be what it is today had it not been for the articles that this gentleman wrote and the things he had to say about the kids at St. Jude,” Owen said of Helton. Both Helton and Mayne reminisced on the beginnings of the program and the significance of receiving the award from Owen himself. “Your vision, creating, building and nurturing of Country Cares For St. Jude Kids is really nothing short of monumental,” Helton told Owen. “To be even a small part of it is truly one of the most rewarding aspects of my entire of life.” Added Mayne, “I am so thankful for your vision way back then and your leadership from then until now. Someday we’re all going to have us a really big celebration when we reach that one billion mark.” Space – both inside St. Jude and literally out of this world – was toured via video during the seminar. Guides, including cancer survivors, co-workers and married couple Lindsey Wilkerson and Joel Alsup, used a 360-degree camera in place of the usual in-person showing to explore spaces within the campus that affected them personally. The crew of the first all-civilian space mission Inspiration4 Crew to orbit Earth, Inspiration4, participated in a live video call with patients, showing their view – upside down in the case of cancer survivor Hayley Arceneaux – and answering questions that ranged from sleeping arrangements to the existence of aliens (we were all thinking it, Gabriel). “I just want you all to know that we’re doing this for you, and we are thinking about you so much,” gushed Arceneaux. “I wanted to tell you that I was a little girl going through cancer treatment, just like a lot of you. OFF THE RECORD Country Aircheck goes Off The Record with Back Blocks Music CEO/Founder Rakiyah Marshall: I grew up listening to pretty much everything. My mom always had music on and cycled through Caribbean, pop, R&B, gospel and country music. RAKIYAH If you came into my room, I MARSHALL likely had pop and punk bands in rotation. I was lucky to have a lot of great supervisors at my internships who gave me guidance, but one I’ve had the chance to look up to is [Warner/Chappell UK’s] Shani Gonzales. It can be challenging enough to start a company in and of itself, but no doubt the pandemic threw a curve ball to us with hardly any live shows. For me, the opportunity in that was to learn different skills in discovering new talent, because we didn’t have as many in-person opportunities to discover artists. What I’ve learned about myself — personally and professionally —last year and this year is you are never done learning in any stage of your career. My favorite song on the radio – any format – right now is Ari Lennox’s “Pressure.” I enjoy working out. When the pandemic began, [fiancé Seth England and I] converted a room in our house to a home gym. I have yet to go back to workout classes with all the cool interactive options. I’m currently bingeing Maid on Netflix. Reach her here.

Congratulations to Luke Combs, Steve Hodges, Shane Allen, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on landing at No. 1 with “Cold As You.” This is Combs’ 12th single and 12th No. 1, extending his record for most consecutive No. 1s to start an artist’s Luke Combs career. Since he landed his first No. 1 in May 2017 with “Hurricane,” Combs has racked up 25 weeks atop the chart, which is 10 more weeks than any other artist in the same timeframe. Additionally, Combs’ album What You See Is What You Get becomes the first album to generate seven No. 1 singles. Songwriters are Randy Montana, Jonathan Singleton, Shane Minor and Combs. Kudos to Anna Cage and the Warner/WMN crew along with Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines and the Broken Bow crew on landing “Never Say Never” by Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson atop this week’s Add Board with 89 adds. The duet debuts at No. 30 to become the highest debut ever for both acts; for Swindell that eclipses his No. 31 debut for “You Should Be Here” in January 2016. While the Country chart is no stranger to Canadian and Australian acts, it is rarely visited by acts from the UK. With the No. 37 debut of the duet version of “Easy On Me” with Chris Stapleton, Adele becomes the first British act to chart since February 2013, when folk rock band Mumford & Sons crossed over from the Pop charts for 10 weeks with “I Will Wait.”

His acceptance was a tapestry of stories, starting with interacting with Dillon on the Opryland Hotel red carpet as a valet delivered the songwriter’s rumbling truck. “That truck had more attitude and I had a feeling it belonged to Dean,” Stuart recalled. “You could tell it was a songwriting money truck. It sounded so good, and Dean looked so cool. I didn’t know him. Before he got in the truck I said, ‘What will it do?’ He burned rubber all the way to Briley Parkway. I like that man!” Addressing Williams, he recalled late manager Merle Kilgore adding the then-unsigned Stuart as support for a show in Moline,

IL. “When Bocephus was onstage – you know what happened – the roof came off the place,” Stuart recalled. “By the time he had his shirt off and the elephant gun up on top of the piano, it was going ballistic. I told the band, ‘Let’s get out of here while we have time.’” On his way out, Stuart was interrupted by one of the senior citizens who volunteered at the venue. Dean Dillon “Bocephus had this place tilted over on its side,” Stuart said. “This one gentleman stopped me said, ‘Young man, would you do me a favor? Would you and the gentleman who is up on the piano never come back to our town again?’” As for himself, Stuart encapsulated the vision. “I remember a picture I saw of Louis Armstrong in a tuxedo playing his trumpet to the pyramids. I thought, that man can go anywhere on planet Earth and represent jazz. Marty Stuart I want to do that for country music, because country music deserves the same consideration ... it needs to have its place in the pantheon of the arts.” His central role in Ken Burns’ Country Music included a chance meeting for an airport cup of coffee. Stuart described the moment as one that might have been worthy Hank of inclusion in the series: “This old boy came Williams, Jr. up, Tennessee t-shirt, ‘Hey Marty, I love your music, man. You got my wife through gallbladder surgery last week. Can I get my picture made with you?’ He looked at Ken Burns, he handed him his phone and said, ‘Hoss, would you take my picture with Marty?’”

Stuart’s closing story recalled an ‘80s trip to Las Vegas with hard-gambling fashion mogul Manuel. After winning a little, losing a lot and then winning exponentially more, Manuel took his winnings to the window, where they asked for his room key. “She said, ‘Oh, we now have a suite for you.’ And he goes, ‘I know!’ That’s the way I feel right now. I know!” If I Know Me: In addition to once being queried by Bruce Springsteen about his Dean Dillon-penned song “A Lot Of Things Different,” Kenny Chesney told of being an eager young artist intimidated at writing with the iconic Dillon. “Dean was already in the room, smoking a cigarette and looking across the street at Erv Woolsey’s office,” he said. “Without even looking at me ... he goes, ‘Chesney, hang on a minute. You’re gonna have to give me time for my mind to get down on your level.’ That’s where this friendship started.” After Chesney performed, Brittney Spencer song “Tennessee Whiskey” and Hall of Famer George Strait delivered “The Chair.” And it was Strait leading the induction. “’It all started in 1981. Our life had just begun.’ I wrote that with Dean Dillon – it was another song – but it could have easily been our story. Our musical career and friendship started in 1981 when I was able to get ‘Unwound’ from you and Frank Dycus. Luckily Johnny Paycheck – you know the story – was in jail. So I got the song.” Not to be outdone by Stuart, Dillon had a heart-stopping story about his dream of being a singer/songwriter/artist. Four or five albums into the Monday-before-recording meetings he’s had with Strait for decades, something changed. “I played him everything and the kitchen sink,” Dillon said. “He didn’t like anything. And I was kinda – no – I was really damn pissed off. As I’m walking out the door he goes, ‘Hey, Dean. There is this one song: “Easy Come, Easy Go.”’ I said, ‘George, that’s the first single off my [next] album.’ Tony Brown piped in and said, ‘If you let us have that song, I promise you a No. 1 record.’ I did the math in my head real quick and thought, ‘Do you want a record career or do you want to be a songwriter.’ In my heart of heart of hearts, I knew what I really loved. I left that meeting, went to [my label] Atlantic, walked into Rick Blackburn’s office and said, ‘I’m done.’ It was the smartest decision I ever made.” Country State Of Mind: Himself the son of a country icon, Shooter Jennings credited Hank Williams, Jr. for “laying a path for me that wasn’t there before.” He added, “You’re one of the great songwriters – most unsung songwriters – in country music,” before performing “Feelin’ Better.” Eric Church offered his take on “A Country Boy Can Survive” after telling his own Hank story

from an opening gig in Lafayette, LA. “I went out, feeling my oats, and had ‘em going. I remember being side-stage because I always watched Hank’s show. Hank come up – I’m still feeling pretty good – it’s my crowd, they sang ‘Smoke A Little Smoke.’ He goes, ‘I heard you had ‘em going, cousin.’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘Watch this.’” Church recalled his response to the crowd’s reaction as, “Oh, shit.” Alan Jackson set up his performance of “The Blues Man” by addressing Williams directly. “They always connect you with the rowdy, drunk and crazy stuff, but, man, you’re a great songwriter. You write some sweet and great things. It ain’t all party stuff ... it impressed me and helped lead me to Nashville.” Hall of Famer Brenda Lee delivered the induction speech: “I’m not here to induct Hank, Jr., the entertainer. I’m here to induct Hank, Jr., the father, the philanthropist, the friend and the guy you can always call at midnight and say, ‘Hey, I’m in trouble. I’m in Alabama with a flat tire.’ He might not come, but he’ll send his plane.” Hank Williams, Jr. sent his plane and himself for the honor, and earned a chuckle dropping to his knees so the diminutive Lee could slip the medallion over his head. He was simple and direct in his acceptance, noting an early remark by Dillon about Nashville. “That part about the family with the open arms, well, that might have been a bit different in my case,” he said. He tipped his hat to the night’s many references to his music by closing. “All my rowdy friends are coming over tonight. I was born to boogie. And this is a family tradition.” Following tradition, the country music family closed the evening with a performance of “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” led by Smith. –Chuck Aly
