Mixing Country & Sobriety: Part 2

Ingrained and romanticized throughout country music, alcohol can be a road to ruin for some. In part one of this story, Monument’s Walker Hayes, iHeartMedia SVP/Programming Gator Harrison, songwriter Shane McAnally and Big Loud’s Dir./National Promotion Tyler Waugh opened up about recognizing their struggles. Recovery and learning to navigate a gin-soaked business are challenges individuals and the broader industry can find better ways to support. One thing on which Hayes, McAnally, Harrison and Waugh agree: There is no onesize-fits-all to recovery. Hayes is a big believer in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and credits the Walker Hayes organization with getting him through the night he and his wife buried their seventh child. “I was two years sober, but I went to the bar with the intention of going crazy,” he recalls. “I wanted to get in a fight ... wanted to get hammered. I didn’t care if I was beaten up or arrested. I was there to self-destruct.” Fortunately, when he arrived at the bar, he didn’t have his wallet. “I went home and saw my wife sitting there by herself, and I was ashamed,” he admits. “I was Gator Harrison so focused on me and not my wife and my kids at this time in our life.” After Walker confessed his earlier urges, Laney found an AA meeting close by. “It completely saved my life that night.” Sobriety isn’t linear – it’s an ongoing process that begins with an adjustment period differing in both length and difficulty for each person. When Hayes stopped drinking, he found writing sober “scary,” noting, “Normally, Shane McAnally I had a good buzz, so going into a room sober and spilling my guts and my heart made me feel naked.” Recalling his first sober show, he remembers, “I didn’t give it much thought until I stood onstage, and my right hand was literally confused. It was like, ‘Where is that thing I used to reach for right after I finished the song?’” He no longer had a buzz to hide Tyler Waugh behind, either. “My left hand on my guitar was literally shaking, and my voice, it felt like my first gig ever. It felt like stage fright back to square one.” (continued on page 11)

Q3 Drivetime Leaders

Significant shifts are seen in morning and afternoon drive leaders for Q3 (July-Sept.), particularly in share numbers (see boxes below). Cume remains more stable where market size and syndication (hi, Bobby!) weight the scales. As always, Nielsen PPM figures are Persons 6+. Mornings: With morning drive clearance in 17 PPM markets, The Bobby Bones Show remains firmly atop the cume rankings. The show was up slightly (9,700) from Q2 with a cume of just over one-and-a-quarter million. WUSN/Chicago’s Melissa McGurren and Austin Huff come in second with a cume of 288,400, up 32,500 from Q2. An increase of 45,800 puts KKBQ/Houston’s Q Morning Zoo with Erica Rico and Katelyn Maida in third place. KKGO/Los Angeles jumps from ninth to fourth, and KPLX/Dallas rounds out the top five. WQIK/Jacksonville’s Big Show with Robbie & John lives up to its name, a 3.5 share increase from Q2 gives it a big 10.7 to lead the format in morning drive shares. KSOP/Salt Lake City’s Dave Gunderson & Deb Turpin remain in second with a 9.8 share, while third place sees two morning shows tied with a 7.4 share: KNCI/ Sacramento’s Pat Still, Tom Mailey and Cody Robinson and WCTK/Providence’s Brian Mulhern and Courtney Kelley. Afternoons: WUSN/Chicago’s Scotty Kay remains the most listened-to voice in afternoon drive with a cume of 417,000, up from Q2’s 411,500. KKBQ’s Caitlin “CJ” Johnson, who departed the station after the September survey, lands in second place with 401,000, an increase of 59,300 from last quarter. Sean “Coop” Tabler,

Adds McAnally, “We think it’s part of our appeal, but the truth is that whatever that spark is that we think is brought out by alcohol or drugs can be found in other ways. You’ve just become accustomed to being able to conjure that with alcohol.” He’s found he’s much more comfortable now than he ever was when drinking. “That’s huge,” he says. “I didn’t think that would happen.” Despite being sober, both Hayes and McAnally feel comfortable writing and recording drinking songs like their co-penned “AA.” “Drinking songs are a huge part of the vernacular of the genre,” says McAnally. A quick search of a few key words like “alcohol,” “drink” and

“beer” showed more than 30 No. 1s in the past decade. McAnally elaborates, “So much of what we write is about our nostalgic past … and that includes drinking.” Hayes agrees, saying, “I want my songs to encompass all sides of the human heart. That includes drinking and recovery and everything in between.” Neither Harrison nor Waugh feel uncomfortable being around drinking. Waugh remembers, “Years ago, when I tried to stop, people would ask, ‘What are you doing? Have a drink.’ There was peer pressure, but this time around, not one person has mentioned it. I haven’t been ridiculed or called out.” Harrison states, “For me, it became an opportunity rather than peer pressure. I’ll go into a bar for a showcase at 11pm and order a cup of coffee in front of a bunch of radio people. If they ask why, I’ll say, ‘Let me tell you why I’m drinking coffee.’” That level of comfort may not be the same for all in recovery, however. As an industry, offering a safe space for those who prefer not to imbibe is an important Waisted: Waugh step to take in supporting those who are earns his purple belt working to remain sober. Admittedly “not an expert,” Hayes does advise people who think they might have a problem to be honest with themselves and ask for help before it’s too late. “Ask yourself why. Why am I drinking? Why am I uncomfortable? Ask yourself those things before your son or a cop asks you.” McAnally praises Hayes for “being an ambassador” and his “openness and vulnerability” when discussing his personal struggles and hopes it leads to a more open dialogue. “We’ll hopefully follow the leader, and luckily, some of our leaders are now sober.” “I don’t have a degree in helping people with this, but for me personally, I’ve discovered you have to replace that routine – that habit – with something positive,” says Waugh, who turned his energy towards Jiu Jitsu. He also cautions change doesn’t happen overnight. “Last week was the first time I realized my mind felt clear,” he says. “It took more than a year. People think if they stop drinking, in one week, they’ll be a new person, but it takes time.” Harrison compares the newly sober to toddlers, saying, “You put those bumpers on corners so they don’t bump their heads. You have to do that for yourself. What are your triggers? What makes you want to drink? Protect yourself from being in those situations.” He also encourages people in the industry to care more about the success of a person than that of a company. “It’s about caring more about your investment into a human and seeing the success of that versus the success of a ratings share point or a revenue bottom line.” Reach Harrison here and Waugh here.
