June Issue: HoF, ACMs, Charlie Bob & More

From back rooms in Frisco, TX and insight from top artist managers to Nashville’s star bars and the untold stories of radio icons, Country Aircheck ’s June print edition covers a lot of ground. Delivered in physical and digital editions this week, the issue can also be found Wednesday (6/19) at the Country Radio Hall of Fame dinner and induction. Here’s a preview:

Razz

Bow Bow Bolo: As Academy of Country Music Radio Award winners prepared to celebrate last month, at least one had to get help with a wardrobe malfunction. “After struggling with my bow tie for 30 minutes, I decided to go to the show without one,” says Mark Razz, PD for Major Market Station of the Year WXTU/Philadelphia. “Thanks to MCA VP Miranda McDonald, who apparently packs the whole house while travelling and had an extra bolo tie with an amazing eagle on it. When you need to represent Philadelphia, an eagle is a tremendous accessory. In fact, she had two bolos and lent the other one to Capitol VP Chris Schuler. I can’t imagine what else I could have borrowed.”

Also celebrating in Texas were New Duo of the Year Tigirlily Gold, who sandwiched their big week between radio shows on opposite coasts. “We do everything we can because we waited so long for these opportunities,” Krista Slaubaugh says. “We tell our label and management, ‘Say yes and we’ll figure the details out later.’” Her sister Kendra adds, “The dreams we’ve had for a really long time are starting to come true. We have to start setting our goals a little bit higher every day. We’re still hungry and in full-on hustle mode, which is a really fun place to be.”

Luke Bryan’s Mind Of A Country Boy Tour kicked off stateside Thursday (6/13) in Jacksonville following a four-date run in Canada. 70%(ish) capacity for their sets. Jordan agrees, noting fans were “very receptive” to Rose and Ross, whose cover of The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Irish” was a standout. Both returned later in the night for “This Is How We Roll” with Bryan.

The T-shaped stage featured one large screen and a long, single extension, where the headliner spent most of the show interacting with the audience and, what else, shaking his ass. It is a Luke Bryan show, after all. “The Luke ‘hip grind’ dance during ‘Move’ and ‘Play It Again’ were definitely crowd favorites,” laughs Langley.

Jordan’s highlights were the stripped-down moments, like Bryan’s pianoonly performance of “Do I,” which led into “Buy Dirt” and “Drink A Beer.” There was no actual stripping down, at least not from the stage – no outfit changes – and no “B” stage, but there was a giant margarita glass. You can guess during which song that made an appearance.

Bryan closed appropriately with “I Don’t Want This Night To End” before returning for an encore performance of “Country Girl (Shake It For Me).” “Each time is better than the last,” says Langley, who has now seen Bryan in Jacksonville three times. “His energy and crowd interaction between songs are amazing.” Jordan concurs, saying, “Luke is a very entertaining performer and very much still a staple in our format.” The tour hits New York, Michigan, Ohio, California, Georgia and more before returning to Florida for its closing show in Tampa Sept. 14. Chart Chat

Congratulations to Kenny Chesney, Kristen Williams, Anna Cage, Tom Martens, Stephanie Hagerty and the Warner/WEA promotion team on landing at No. 1 this week with “Take Her Home.” The song becomes Chesney’s 36th career chart-topper

and moves him into sole possession of third most No. 1s in the 50-year history of the R&R /MB/CA airplay charts, behind Alabama (40) and George Strait (44.) Songwriters are  Michael Hardy, Zach Abend and Hunter Phelps.

Kudos to Adrian Michaels and the Stoney Creek crew on racking up 118 adds for Jelly Roll ’s “I Am Not Okay” to lead this week’s CA/MB Add Board. That eclipses the 92 adds for “Halfway To Hell” in January, which was the previous largest add week for both Jelly and the label. The track also debuts at No. 29 on this week’s chart, which likewise is the highest debut for Jelly and the highest in the label’s 15-year history.

Connoisseur WWWF/Nassau-Suffolk (Long Island) will be added to the Country Aircheck/Mediabase panel effective with the airplay week beginning June 23 and chart published July 1. OM Patrick Shea can be reached here

WBYT/South Bend, IN remains temporarily removed from the Activator panel this week due to technical issues.

Darius Rucker has joined the creative team at wine brand As One Cru . The brand’s Vintner, Chris Radomski , says “I’ve been a fan of Darius from the ’90s up through the amazing stuff he’s doing right now in country music, and we’re really thrilled to welcome him to the CRU. He brings an authentic, laid-back charm that represents what this wine is all about.”

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville has opened a Tom Petty exhibit highlighting his connections to country music. Tom Petty: Where I Come From is included with museum admission, and runs through summer 2025.

June Issue: HoF, ACMs, Bob & More

(continued from page 1)

Oh, Suzanne, Uh ... Between Portland, OR on Saturday and Frisco, TX on Monday was a quick return to Nashville. “We had half a day to prepare, get a spray tan and head out to the airport,” Kendra says. The trip was not without incident. “We went to grab our bags and someone took mine. Not on purpose ... similar luggage. American Airlines was no help, but there was a luggage tag so we called her.” Krista: “Her name was Suzanne.” Kendra: “We tracked her down at the rental car place and I got my bag. That’s how it started, but if that’s the only blip this week, we’re all good.”

Speaking of mistaken identities, inquiring minds want to know why Lon Helton calls retiring Cumulus format captain Charlie Cook, “Bob.” “My real name is Bob Catalano, which I used on my first job,” Cook explains. “Then I moved to Denver and the program director there said, ‘You can’t use Catalano. It’s way too ethnic.’ I might’ve argued except his name was Len Archediagano and he had changed it to Len Anthony. We opened the phone book and pointed randomly to someone who lived on Clayton Street. So I picked Bob Clayton, and that’s why Lon Helton still calls me Bob after all these years. When I met him, I was Bob Clayton.”

Still, Bob Clayton is not Charlie Cook. “When I left Denver for Wheeling, I replaced Bob Knight, but there was also a Bob Berry, a Bob Kane, a Bob Barwick and someone else. Five Bobs. They told me, ‘You can’t be a Bob.’ But that’s my name! They didn’t care. Coincidentally, I had worked for a guy named Bob Koch – pronounced ‘Cook.’ He was a great guy, so I decided to take his name. Meanwhile, Charley Pride and Charlie Rich were at the top of the charts. Charlie Cook sounded like a great name, and I’ve been that since about 1973.”

Chair Apparent: Managing talent is often complicated, and if representation trends in country music are any indication, increasingly done by women. Among several managers featured, Sandbox’s Lisa Ray notes the increasing logistical challenges –especially when a client (Dan + Shay) gets booked for a substantial TV gig (The Voice.) “I am by nature a planner, so I’m always working at least a year out – honestly more – and I love minutiae,” she says. “It serves me well in this role. I love my calendar, but a major, year-long TV show, an album

(that your artist is also producing), and an arena and amphitheater tour all at once? Let’s go! My job is to keep the car between the lines and provide the best possible path to get there. Creatives will always need to be creative, and being able to find a way to make it all fit is how we roll.”

In The Interview, manager Kerri Edwards says launching careers and businesses in country music is still about connection, even with the growing importance of technology. “Relationships are how I’ve tried to build this company,” she says. “I’m still a believer in our community helping, supporting and lifting each other up. When did No. 1 parties become annoying to people? Yes, things have evolved. Projects are framed differently. But I don’t want to lose sight of the people. I encourage that and will say to some of my younger artists, ‘We’re going to go do this because you need to be in front of people. You need to meet somebody.’”

Also putting artists in front of industry pros are label promotion teams as they look to the second half of 2024’s priorities in the issue’s Music Preview. And equally worthy of some navigation: Nashville’s burgeoning population of artist-themed venues. In “A Broadcaster’s Guide To Star Bars,” Country Aircheck reached out to venue operators for an overview and specifics that can help broadcasters who need talking points to share with Nashville-bound listeners, or are seeking thought-starters and contact info for promotions. To wit, AJ’s Good Time Bar, where the signature cocktails include the “Chattahoochee Mule,” fueled by Jackson’s signature Silverbelly Whiskey. Visitors can also find the neon at the back of the first floor, which is original from the Square Grouper Tiki Bar in Jupiter, FL where Jackson filmed several music videos. And the wheel at the front of the bar is rumored to have been the elevator crank from when the building was a Civil War hospital.

Last but foremost, each member of this year’s Country Radio Hall of Fame class is the subject of a full-page feature. Cody Alan points to a recurring theme across their careers – the power of connection. “If I had not met [fellow ‘24 inductee] Mike Moore and gone to Orlando, I’d never have made it to Dallas. If I hadn’t made it to Dallas, I’d never have met Brian [Philips]. If I’d never met Brian, I’d never have made it to CMT, and if I never made it to CMT, none of this would be happening. You can make connections, but it’s how much you prove yourself with those connections. I always treated every step like there is no elevator to the top; I’m going to have to take the stairs every time.”

Lauren Watkins The Heartbroken Record (Big Loud/Songs & Daughters)

“I didn’t want to just put an album out – I wanted it to be purposeful,” explains Watkins. “It’s the past several years of my life, and that was just so much heartbreak and dramatic girl-feelings, but I think in a really deep and relatable way… and it just needs to get off my chest.”
