Galante, Lewis, Whitley Enter Hall
“A wild pioneer of rockabilly, a hard-living Kentucky balladeer, and a record executive who dared to believe that Nashville could be more than an outpost for the New York and L.A. labels” were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame Sunday evening (10/16). Jerry Lee Lewis, Keith Whitley and Joe Galante, as described by CMA CEO Sarah Trahern, were “all outliers who became the ultimate insiders.” Impeccably produced by Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum staff and presided over by CEO Kyle Young, the event traced what he called “three paths to the unbroken circle that is the Country Music Hall of Fame.”
Joe Galante: Musical performances began with Alabama’s Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry leading the Medallion All-Star Band in “My Home’s In Alabama.” Miranda Lambert performed her first No. 1, “White Liar,” and Kenny Chesney offered “The Good Stuff.” Medallion presenter Kix Brooks told of Galante’s role in reviving Brooks & Dunn’s career. “Sometimes it takes a guy like Joe Galante, whose life depends on it, to tell us what we’re doing is magic [and who] sometimes has more faith in us that we may have in ourselves.”
Citing many whose support was pivotal, Galante pointed to the education he received from Jerry Bradley and Frances Preston, in particular. RCA and Sony executives and staff were called out for their hard work, passion and friendship. Family was a recurring theme. “My dad was a postal service worker and when I took this job, he kept asking me, ‘What do you do?’” Galante said. “I tried to explain, [but] he kept going, ‘I don’t get it.’ I brought him down one year for [the CMA Awards]. He hung with me at meetings the next couple days.

Carrie On: Underwood Launches Tour
Capitol’s Carrie Underwood kicked off The Denim & Rhinestones Tour featuring Stoney Creek’s Jimmie Allen Oct. 15 in Greenville, SC. The show will stop in 43 cities through Spring 2023, but iHeartMedia WSSL/ Greenville MD/ afternoon personality Aaron Michael was among the first to see the show and tells Country Aircheck readers what to expect when the tour hits their market.

Star Of Stage And Jean: Capitol’s Carrie Underwood with WSSL/ Greenville’s Aaron Michael on opening night of The Denim & Rhinestones Tour in Greenville, SC.
“Jimmie Allen was incredible; his energy is second to none, and he had the crowd rocking from the very first song,” says Michael. He describes the event staging as “big” with “a huge catwalk into the middle of the crowd with a massive screen at the back.” The band is positioned on different levels across the stage, and Underwood has many posts from which to sing and interact with the audience. She entered by rising from the back of the stage singing “Good Girl.” The 23-song set included her slate of radio hits and most recent single, “Ghost Story,” interspersed with music from the album for which the tour is named.
Midway through the evening, Underwood made her way to a B stage in the back to perform “Two Black Cadillacs,” “Jesus Take The Wheel” and “How Great Thou Art.” “Carrie rode a suspended ball while singing and doing ballet moves on her way to the B stage,” Michael explains. “Let me tell you, she took us all to church with ‘How Great Thou Art.’ The crowd was electric, and everyone had their hands up.” For “If I Didn’t Love You,” her recent charttopping duet with Broken Bow’s Jason Aldean, her collaborator appears via video screen.
Opener Allen returned to the stage to duet with Underwood on “Denim & Rhinestones.” And, Underwood threw in an extra surprise or two, as well. “Carrie played the drums after introducing her band, which was pretty badass and had the crowd going nuts,” Michael states. “And she also covered Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ near the end of the show.” [Ed. Note: See the viral TikTok videos by @goldennashgirl of Underwood’s drum solo and “Welcome To The Jungle” here and here, respectively.]
Michael also noted Underwood’s costume changes. “Carrie changed maybe four or five times, each setting the tone for the next segment of the show,” he says. “While she was changing, her band was absolutely rocking it! There wasn’t a moment of down time.” She concluded the show with “Before He Cheats,” and
there was no encore. “The crowd was absolutely pumped for this show the entire night,” says Michael. “We’ve only had a handful of shows in market since the COVID shut down, so our listeners were ready to go. There was no lull in the crowd energy at all.” He also says the hype has been building since the show date was announced. “Every ticket giveaway had our phone lines slammed, and it was a huge web contest for us, as well,” Michael explains. “It was obvious with the crowd last night; floor to ceiling, there wasn’t an empty spot to stand.”
The crowd got all it bargained for, and more. “Carrie Underwood showed yet again why she is a superstar in our format,” Michael says. “When she takes the stage, she demands your attention, but not in a cocky way at all. You can tell she absolutely loves what she does, loves her fans and loves getting to share her songs. Carrie is one of the nicest human beings ever and made us radio folks feel so welcomes backstage, too. Her entire staff, from tour crew to label reps, were so welcoming – it reminded me what I love most about this job.” See Underwood’s video recap of the show here; full list of remaining tour dates here. Congratulations to Morgan Wallen, Stacy Blythe, Ali Matkosky and the Big Loud promotion team on taking “You Proof” to No. 1. This is Wallen’s seventh No. 1, and its 14-week ride to the top ties Luke Combs’ “The Kind Of Love We Make” for the fastest rise to No. 1 this year. Songwriters are Charlie Handsome, Ashley Gorley, Ernest K. Smith and Wallen.

Kudos to Josh Easler and the Records crew on scoring 35 adds for “Mind On You” by George Birge. Topping the Add Board is a first for both Birge and the Records label since launching as its own fully staffed label.
Love For Loretta
Following last week’s remembrances of Country Music Hall of Famer Loretta Lynn, industry vet Maurice Miner shares a particularly poignant story:
In the mid-’90s, [UMG/Nashville’s] Donna Hughes and I were asked to book Loretta for one of MJI’s CMA remotes. The call came to Donna. We both wanted to do it, and yet we had a moment of hesitation wondering, “Will radio give her the respect she deserves and actually speak with her considering none of them play her music any more?” I recall telling Donna something to the effect of, “Shame on them if they don’t ... and you and I will just make sure they do.” So we booked her.
When she arrived, we greeted her, explained what she’d be doing, then walked her to the first station she was going to speak with. To get there, she had to cross through a room where 15 stations were broadcasting to get to another room where others were set up. As we started to walk her through the first room, one of the radio personalities started clapping – and stood up. Then another. Then another. Suddenly, an entire room of broadcasters had stopped what they were doing – and at least a couple had to have been live on the air – to give her a standing ovation. Loretta asked Donna, “What’s going on? What are they all clapping for?” Donna said simply, “You.”
Our concerns about radio’s interest in Loretta were set aside. Every single station spoke with her; at least a couple even stayed later than they were scheduled in order to do so. That moment was reflected to me in Country Aircheck’s remembrances last Monday when I saw the photo from [KIIM/Tucson’s] Buzz Jackson and recognized the gold jacket Loretta was wearing that day.

When I put him on the plane, he turned to me and said, ‘I still don’t get it.’ Several months later, I was on the phone with my mom ... and she said, ‘I saw you in Billboard ... your dad goes to the newsstand every Saturday, goes through Billboard and looks for your picture and your name.’ I had no idea. When they both passed, I [found] decades of clippings. In those photos was somebody who is not here tonight, my wife Phran. She was a big part of my career; definitely my better half. It’s just hard not having her here tonight, but I know both my parents and Phran are smiling down right now and very proud.”
Keith Whitley: Mickey Guyton performed “When You Say Nothing at All,” former Whitley bandmate Ricky Skaggs was joined by Molly Tuttle and Justin Moses on “Tennessee Blues,” and Garth Brooks performed “Don’t Close Your Eyes” before the latter presented the medallion. “You pick five names why the Hall of Fame is the place the rest of us want to get into, one of those five names, for me, will be Keith Whitley,” Brooks said. “One of the greatest voices to ever grace country music.” To illustrate, he added, “I’m in love with my wife and [she] has me convinced that she’s in love with me. But when Keith Whitley drops that whole octave ... that woman cannot remember my name.”
Lorrie Morgan accepted the medallion on her late husband’s behalf. “I heard Keith sing for the first time on my way to the Grand Ole Opry,” she said. “I heard this song come on the radio [singing] ‘Miami My Amy.’ I pulled my car off Briley Parkway, sat there and thought, ‘I’m in love with that man.’ I didn’t know who it was at the time. Right when he was done singing, [WSM-AM’s] Keith Bilbrey said, ‘That was the great Keith Whitley with No. 15 in the nation ... and he’s coming up on the 8:30 slot of the Grand Ole Opry.’ I floored my car and said, ‘I am going to get a chance to meet this man tonight.’ And ©2022 Country Aircheck™ — All rights reserved. I did. He asked me out ... the rest is history.” Addressing their children, other family members and Whitley’s fans, Morgan became emotional. “We’ve all missed him together,” she said.
Jerry Lee Lewis: Lee Ann Womack opened the musical tribute to Lewis with “Middle Age Crazy” before The McCrary Sisters offered an amped-up Lewis-styled “My God Is Real.” Chris Isaak performed “Great Balls of Fire” with piano player Jen Gunderman punctuating the song with a final note played with her foot. Hank Williams Jr. and Kris Kristofferson handled induction and acceptance for Lewis, who was too ill to travel. Hank handled the speaking. “Bocephus and the Killer go way back,” he said of having Lewis visit his childhood home. “Jerry Lee was one of my teachers. [He] doesn’t ask for your attention, he demands it. He doesn’t take a stage, he commands it. Sounds familiar. He was the best in 1956 when he entered Sun Studios ... and he’s been the best every day since. He will be the best for as long as people play recorded music.”
Williams read a note sent by Lewis from his sick bed: “I tried everything I could to build up the strength to come today. I’ve looked so forward to it ... Country has always been the genre where I felt the most at home, between my fellow artists, radio and industry players, I’m honored to be going into that hall of fame rotunda with some of my heroes – Hank Williams Sr., Jimmie Rodgers and the like. Not to mention so many amazing friends who have been so good to me through the years. Thank you all for your support and love ... most of all, thanks to God for allowing me to experience this honor while I’m still here.”
