Odessa’s Permian High School was the inspiration for Friday Night Lights, so high school football figures prominently. “We carry Permian and Odessa High football games – alternating teams with one of our other stations,” says Peterson. Afternoon host Tracy Scott handles play-by-play for Permian.
Musically, Peterson says KHKX is all about familiarity. “We are ‘90s heavy, but we actually go back even further than that. We’ll play some ‘60s, a little bit of ‘70s and quite a bit of ‘80s. Some current artists make the jump into what we’re doing, like Luke Combs and Blake Shelton. We also play a George Strait song every hour and have a Texas music show on Saturday nights.

Spotlighting inductees ahead of the Oct. 30 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala continues with Gary Nicholson Nicholson arrived in Nashville in 1980 and worked as a guitar player, producer and songwriter. Among his many notable compositions are “One More Last Chance” (Vince Gill), “Givin’ Water To A Drowning Man” (Lee Roy Parnell), “Live, Laugh, Love” (Clay Walker) and “Squeeze Me In” (Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood). A selfdescribed “blues nerd” as a kid, Nicholson has proudly landed 17 cuts with Buddy Guy, among others.

1, 2 Point Conversion: River House/Columbia’s Luke Combs (c) celebrates his 14th consecutive airplay No. 1, “The Kind of Love We Make,“ with iHeart’s Rod Phillips (l) and the label’s Steve Hodges in Green Bay, WI.

Country Aircheck pored through Nielsen’s Spring 2022 twiceper-year surveys to find the format’s biggest small market success stories. Two are stations that have a track record of success, and one is brand new to the No. 1 club, but all three share locally focused owners and a bullish outlook on radio.

Fair To Midland: Brazos West KHKX/Odessa-Midland, TX marked its 21st anniversary this spring in spectacular fashion with a 6.4 to 8.1 jump, giving the station its largest share ever and its first No. 1 finish – all the more impressive in light of its three-way format battle with Townsquare KNFM and ICA Communications KMRK.
PD Kelley Peterson has been with KHKX since it signed on and says this spring’s results are especially gratifying given the station’s recent history. “Our heritage morning show [Mike Lawrence and Dana Carole] retired a few years ago, and it sent us into a bit of a tailspin,” Peterson says. “Being able to recover from that and actually grow has been a testament to our staff.”
KHKX now carries Compass’ The Big D & Bubba Show but adds a unique element. “Every time they do a break, we have our Amanda James talking about local information and contesting. That’s been the key to transitioning into a really cool syndicated show while keeping locality.”
Kids talk about what they want to do, and I would say, “I want to be a musician and a writer, too,” because I also wrote short stories. But I hadn’t conceived you could write songs and make a living doing it.

My favorite moments from the Raised Up Right Tour have been just Luke Bryan himself. How I’m learning from his crew, how he’s had people stay on his team for so long and advice directly from Luke. It’s priceless. But my favorite part is getting to sing with him every night on a song that was his first No. 1 as a songwriter, “Good Directions.”
Jim Ed had success as a record producer and gave me a job writing songs for his company, which meant moving my family to Nashville in 1980. I wrote for him for three years, then signed with Tree, where I stayed for 15 years.
Patty Loveless was cooking dinner with her husband and producer, Emory Gordy, Jr., and listening to Nashville radio. I was doing an interview and sang “Trouble With The Truth” live on-air. The song was about eight years old by then and wasn’t getting pitched. She heard me singing it, and by the time I got home, the guy who interviewed me called to say Patty had called the station

me the things that happen when you least expect it. It took a second for that to register. Here’s to a billion more!
TikTok was the only reason that “Truth About You” became a single. People took it, lived with it, and made their own videos. They told me this song mattered to them. We have the technology to gather the data; I have to listen to the people who listen to me. The life of this song – from writing it, recording it, going through quarantine, putting up the video on TikTok, it becoming a song on the record, it becoming a radio single and our newest No. 1 single – it’s crazy. I like TikTok for the funny content to make me forget about the world for a minute. Every now and then, you find a little piece of gold.
Jim Ed was called upon to produce Mickey Gilley for the Urban Cowboy soundtrack. I had a song called “Jukebox Argument” – written mostly out of boredom. They loved it and cut it, so I had the thrill of going to a movie theater in north Texas and hearing my song in the background. Of course, by the time I
I’ve been going [to CMA Fest] since I was a kid growing up in Nashville when it was called Fan Fair. It’s the reason I got my record deal with Sony, because you never know who is going to show up in the audience. This year, I got to play in the stadium, where my favorite team – the Titans – play. So many great things have happened to me this year, but I think playing Nissan was my highlight of 2022.
OFF THE RECORD
This Is The Heavy is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I grew up playing in rock bands and wanted to make this record heavier, production-wise and lyrically. We turned the guitars up, hit the drums harder, and I really tried to pull on the heart strings with the lyrics. I wanted this to be a record that you could play super loud. The songs that standout from the very beginning are “Good Place” and all the way to the last song, “That’s How She Goes;” that one got me signed to my first publishing deal eight years ago. I love how they set the tone and bookend the entire record. When I was a teenager, I was hanging out on a friend’s rooftop, and we saw a saucer out in the field past his house. It lifted up off the ground moving left to right. We grabbed his mom and asked what it was, and she couldn’t explain. All of a sudden, it flew off. The next morning, we went out to the field and saw marks in the grass where it was. I don’t know if there were aliens in it, but it was definitely an unidentified flying object. But as for the photo being on the back cover, there is nothing tying it to the album. I just wanted a UFO on the back of the record … and to leave people wondering why.
realized it was my song, the scene changed.
Riser House/Columbia’s Mitchell Tenpenny goes Off The Record:

My first No. 1 was “That’s The Thing About Love” by Don Williams in 1984. My wife and I said we’d give Nashville five years, and about four years in, here comes that song. It got us out of the worst rental house and able to buy one. We were amazed the banks of Nashville would give you a loan based on your chart position.
I’d gotten some music business experience at a fairly young age, but still didn’t know there were staff writers at publishing companies who got up every morning, drank their coffee and went to work writing songs. That didn’t happen for me until I moved to Nashville, and I was 30 years old by then.
I never imagined I would get to a billion streams. For me as a musician, I wanted my songs to be heard and for them to make it out to the world. As a songwriter, the hardest thing is 99% of your songs will never be heard. My goal as an artist is to get more out there. It’s crazy to
Jim Ed Norman was roommates with the rhythm guitar player for my college frat band. We met Gram Parsons after a gig, and he encouraged us to move to L.A. Jim Ed ended up in a band with Don Henley. When that split up, Henley joined the Eagles, and Jim Ed joined our band, which did absolutely nothing to speak of. Made a couple albums, got my ass kicked and moved back to Texas.

The tried and true “Secret Sound” promotion has been running across the last five books. “Listeners know it, they look forward to it and they call asking about it months before we start,” Brooks says. “It’s not about a big prize payoff, it’s about that accumulation over time as the money increases.”

An emphasis on digital focuses on the station’s app. “We utilize interactive voting sessions over three different dayparts. The morning show has an entire half hour takeover, the midday shift has a new music shootout, and then there’s the ‘Drive At Five’ where listeners pick their favorite songs to play on their way home. While major markets are looking at cost optimization, we’re looking at expanding and growing.”

Get Your Kix: Zimmer KIXQ/Joplin, MO is no stranger to the top of the rankers. It’s finished first overall in 40 of the last 45 surveys. While it held steady from last fall to spring with an even 12 share, its 25-54 share jumped in the spring matching its five-year high water mark and outpacing No. 2 sister Top 40 KSYN by five shares.
“This radio station has its own personality,” says Peterson. “No matter what we’re doing, we make sure listeners are having as much fun as we are. We have a fantastic regional owner who understands the importance of live, local radio. It’s like a big plate of nachos; there’s nothing wrong with just cheese, but adding the station’s and airstaff’s personality with fun sweepers makes it into supreme nachos.”
“We’re a Top 40 station that just happens to play country music,” explains PD Randy Brooks . “My main competitor is not the three other Country stations, it’s the station down the hall. They’re playing five of my current titles. They can promote my station all they want, but we do not focus on new music; we just give the impression that we do. I’m a big believer in playing songs my audience already knows.”

News & Notes
The songwriting community is not what it was, but I accept the change. Music Row was pretty magical for a stretch of time. You’d pitch your buddy’s song, because you thought it would fit a project even though you didn’t write it. Five years later, he’d pitch one of yours. That camaraderie was significant. I feel very fortunate to have been able to make a living writing songs; it’s an unbelievable dream.

Primarily a “New Country” station, Webb says the mix is “6070% contemporary country.” He adds, “We also meet the needs of people who love classic country with an hourly throwback and a ‘90s feature at noon. Being the only Country station in the market gives us the freedom to do a little bit of everything.”

Morning host Tom Whalen joined the station in 1999, while

Live appearances are no longer central to marketplace visibility. “My oldest daughters couldn’t wait to get their drivers licenses so they could better connect with their friends,” Brooks explains. “My youngest didn’t get hers until she was 21, and then it was only at my urging. She had a different way of connecting with her social group so didn’t feel the need. Society is connecting differently; Instagram Reels, Facebook and Tik Tok are among the opportunities to better connect with our audience on their level. Luckily, I work for a company that believes in investing in the future.”
Despite the common assumption that traffic apps make onair traffic redundant, WFRE listeners request it throughout the day. “They trust us to tell them what is going on, because we’ve been doing it so long and so well,” Webb says. “It’s not just something that’s sponsored, it is a vital and viable part of our on-airFromproduct.”Webb’s view, reports of radio’s demise are vastly overstated. “In Frederick, it is not only just as viable as it’s always been, but it’s even more essential now,” he says. “We’re metropolitan enough to offer traffic updates for areas close to DC but small enough to mention a lost dog and find the owner within a few hours. We are providing something listeners can’t get form a streaming service or online. Music, information and companionship – that’s really what it’s all about.”

Free And DC Down The Road: Few stations can claim the consistency enjoyed by Connoisseur WFRE/Frederick, MD In the shadows of both Baltimore and Washington, the station has finished first in every ratings period since 1993 but hit a low mark in 2020. People here really see themselves more as southern than anything. It doesn’t feel like a suburb of Washington, yet it is. It is a challenge, because you have people that go to work every day in DC that live here, so we end up super-serving everybody.”
co-host Dianah Gibson doubles as news director. Emma Webb handles middays. “Full disclosure: she is my wife,” Andy says. “But she is more talented than I am or ever will be. I run the afternoon show, and we have an intense focus on topics and getting people to be part of the conversation.”
