Multiple hats are more rule than exception in radio these days: programmer, on-air personality, remote tech and even engineer tasks can be required within the same week, if not the same day. Perhaps accelerated by the pandemic and radio’s ongoing challenges, the need for personalities to work across platforms is increasing. Country Aircheck spoke to a few such multi-media personalities for their thoughts on balancing those roles – and life.
Long known as a Nashville-based television music journalist, Kelly Sutton can now be found juggling one of her many roles: Ryman Hospitality Classic Country WSM-AM/ Nashville & Circle television network Coffee, Country & Cody morning co-host; Silverfish Media syndicated Y’all Access With Kelly Sutton weekend personality; Amazon Music “DJ Mode” voice; Amazon Country Heat Weekly host; and the first female to serve as a regular announcer for the Grand Ole Opry How is she managing that workload? “I’m not,” she answers honestly. “I have a fantastic husband who supports me, an understanding daughter who knows sometimes she’ll just have to text dad if she has a question, and an incredible team – including my right hand, my producer Joyce Rizer – who keep me sane. It’s a total team effort.” Sutton maintains that, while busy, the opportunity to pour her talents into multiple creative outlets has both expanded her brand and helped her continue to be open to new ideas and opportunities.

NSHOF: Steve Wariner
After a chance meeting led to joining Dottie West’s band, Wariner went on to earn 14 No. 1s, more than 30 Top 10 singles, three gold albums, four Grammy and CMA Awards and three ACM Awards, in addition to penning songs for artists including Garth Brooks, Keith Urban, Kenny Rogers and Conway Twitty.
I met [Dottie] when I was 17, and by the time I turned 18, I was already down here working for her. I used to walk on her bus, and she’d ask, “What did you write this week?” She was the first person that really pushed my songwriting. She was also the first person I was around that kept a journal with a running file of all her songs to keep it organized, which I’ve done. I’ve got notebooks through all the years that I’ve
Joe Breezy
Yes Way: Multi-media personality Hunter Kelly agrees with that assessment. While he currently hosts two shows for Apple Music Country – Proud Radio and Neon Songbook Radio – Kelly has utilized the latter to launch an episodic podcast focused on the life and legacy of Country Music Hall of Famers The Judds (continued on page 6)

Making his Austin City Limits debut last week (9/7).

Now that I’ve opened up for George Strait, something else on my “bucket list” is … the Country Music Hall of Fame.
If you saw my streaming history, you might be surprised to see P!nk. She’s been on there a lot lately. U2 has been on there a lot lately, too, and Rod Stewart.

A Lesson In Leavin’: Wariner with Dottie West.

A group of songwriters were invited to a movie theater to watch a rough cut of We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson and write a song for it. “I’m Missing You” didn’t end up being in the movie, but Kenny Rogers cut it. Fast forward a year or so, and I’m invited to Vice President Dick Cheney’s house for an annual barbecue for wounded soldiers just back from Afghanistan and Iraq. There were probably 40 – some in wheelchairs, lost limbs and eyes, but they were back with their families. It was a happy occasion.
I grew up listening to and was influenced by artists including George Strait, Keith Whitley, Willie Nelson, James McMurtry, Todd Snyder, Hayes Carll, Chris Knight and Randy Rogers. And John Mayer is certainly at the top of my list. I was very attracted to and identified with their records at a young age. I’m still sort of ripping them off to this day.

Later, I worked with Chet Atkins, who was the head of RCA at the time. I walked into his office one day, and he said, “Steve, I want you to meet a very good friend of mine;” it was Shel Silverstein. Another time, Chet called , “I’m having lunch in about an hour with Roger Miller down at Maude’s. Can you make it?” I did about a hundred miles per hour down to Music Row.
I wrote “Handle On You” with my buddy, Monty Criswell. I’ve certainly lived that song many, many times over. We wrote it when I was living that song ... quite literally, drinking to deal with my problems instead of handling them like an adult.
MCA’s McCollumParker goes Off The Record:
In 2023, Country radio can expect a new album, tour and the same ol’ me.

I had four songs recorded by Bob Luman on Columbia. Big rockabilly star. I toured in his band, and he heard some of my songs and wanted to cut them. The first big cuts I ever had. His neighbor was going to produce and happened to be Johnny Cash. We go into House of Cash, and the guitar player on the session is Waylon Jennings! One day, I pulled into a parking lot and there’s a girl listening to the radio; my song was playing. That’s the first time I ever heard one of my songs on the radio. I wanted to say, “That’s me! That’s my song! I wrote that!”

been writing ... stacks of notebooks year by year by year. I was introduced to so many songwriters through her. I remember times she would say, “Hey, I’d like you to meet Mickey Newbury,” or “I’d like you to meet Red Lane,” “Roger Miller,” “Larry Gatlin.”
OFF THE RECORD
Mr. Guitar: Wariner with Chet Atkins.
I closed with “I’m Missing You,” because it’s about a soldier’s wife. When I finished, I looked over at a young man, maybe 20-21, sitting in a wheelchair and visibly shaken. He was so moved by the song that I felt a little guilty. I wasn’t sure what to say and made a stupid

He also hosts and curates Following The Sound: Music Talks With Hunter Kelly for 92nd Street Y in New York and works as a freelance writer for publications including Rolling Stone. After his corporate-based roles with Cox’s Rare Country, ABC News and iHeartMedia, Kelly has found new creative energy in the freedom of working as a contractor for multiple companies.
The Isaacs have signed with Given Entertainment for management.
“When everything was shut down, my friend Dawn McCoy was on my podcast at the time (All Our Favorite People) and she was talking about a book called The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron,” Kelly explains. “It’s about reclaiming creativity and spirituality, and what lured me into reading it was Dawn saying there was a 12-week plan in the book that she would start but never finished, because she was so busy with the projects that would come out of the exercises.” Kelly now credits the book with helping him release from page

comment like, “Oh, as I said onstage, that’s the song that Kenny Rogers did,” telling him the story behind it. He looks up at me with tears in his eyes and says, “Yeah, I know, that’s the song I was listening to on my iPod when I got hit.” The Vice President is standing with me, and we’re both hugging this kid – it was a moving moment.

Congratulations to Mitchell Tenpenny, Steve Hodges, Lauren Thomas and the Columbia promotion team on taking “Truth About You” to No. 1. Tenpenny was No. 1 just three weeks ago, as part of “At The End Of A Bar” with Chris Young, making this the shortest span between visits to No. 1 for an artist in the monitored airplay era dating back to 1999. The previous record belonged to Kenny Chesney, who hit No. 1 with “Get Along” in July 2018 just four weeks after “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” with David Lee Murphy was No. 1. Songwriters are Matt Alderman, Thomas Archer and Tenpenny.

Kudos to Dennis Reese and the RCA crew on scoring 68 adds on “Thank You” by Kane Brown and Katelyn Brown. Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani have topped the Add Board together on two occasions, but both pre-dated their marriage.

Dallas radio personality Mike Crow said to me, “I know it’s a long shot, but my wife and I have been coming to see your shows for so long, and we’d like to humbly ask if we could maybe get married on your bus before the show.” At first, I thought it was a strange request, but the more I thought about it, it was actually pretty awesome. He was so nice. He requested that I sing “Like A River To The Sea” during the ceremony, which was broadcast on the station. I still see him and his wife at shows every now and then.

Kelly feels similarly and enjoys working in a contractor space. Meanwhile, Breezy points out that building multiple creative revenue streams starts with communication. “Managing expectations with your team, your supervisors and yourself goes a long way,” he explains. “And I’m very lucky, as each project doesn’t conflict too much with the other.” Sutton thinks multimedia roles will become far more commonplace, concluding, “Creatives will always find a way to create, and in a world where we can work from anywhere, we shouldn’t we be free to split our time and create across multiple platforms and spaces? It only serves to increase the reach of country music, and I am nothing if not country music’s biggest cheerleader.”
All three embraced unexpected challenges in developing their current paradigms. “I rebuilt my career twice before, and after losing my job during the pandemic, I decided to move deeper into a creative mentality,” says Sutton. “In previous roles, I’d have non-compete agreements or contracts that were structured to prevent me from developing other projects. Now, I think employers understand that all boats rise. This is all part of the Kelly Sutton brand, and I will bring the same passion and dedication to anything I start.”
his own internal blockages that kept him from pursuing multiple creative projects: “I can’t do this, because I’m a gay man in country music, or releasing things my parents had said that I internalized, were all things I was able to let go,” he notes. “Most of my current projects came out of those exercises, and now I’m seeing and doing things I could’ve never imagined.”

Time Tables: Scheduling and prioritizing can have varied approaches. “There’s no such thing as work-life balance, honestly,” says Sutton. “Nothing is a 50/50 split. When I’m home, I am 100% a wife, and when I’m with my daughter, I am 100% her mom. But at the Grand Ole Opry, I am 100% the Opry announcer, and at Amazon House, I am 100% a podcast host.”
“This industry is all about relationships, and that has helped me branch out and continue to grow,” Sutton notes. “But these roles have also helped me expand my own network and the depth of my relationships.” Kelly is encouraged by the opportunity to pursue passions, saying, “The chance to write about the LGBTQ community in country music, dig deeper to discover new artists and share the stories and art from people energizes me. Helping people discover new artists or telling historical stories and preserving legacies are the two ends of the spectrum for my country music passion.”

With so many projects spinning at once, and an everpresent creative spirit, burnout may be a concern. Midwest Communication Top 40 WNFN/Nashville PD Joe Breezy, who also serves as Dir./Music & Industry Relations and host for United Stations nationally syndicated Open House Party has just added Pop Culture Correspondent duties for ABC-TV affiliate WKRN/ Nashville. “I don’t necessarily worry about burnout, as each project I work on has enough elements to keep it fresh and different each time,” he tells Country Aircheck. “But managing stress is a huge priority. I’ve always been a fan of ‘own your morning, elevate your life,’ so I have the same morning routine each day.” Meditating, working out and journaling are in his daily routine. He also practices self-care by going phone-free for at least one hour each morning.
Breezy works to front-load his workday and designate certain days and times for each project. “I try not to work on multiple things at once; I believe in short periods of intense focus then taking a break to recharge my mental batteries before diving back in.” Kelly starts his day by writing three page – his “morning pages” – before tackling important creative work.
