The Best Country Market Is...
As noted in this space last month, Nashville and Jacksonville are the top two Country markets – at least when it comes to share of radio listening in PPM. While that’s a significant metric for the top 50 U.S. radio markets, it is but one measure in a limited sample. So what is the best country music market in America? “What’s your goal?” asks Audacy Regional Brand Mgr. Marci Braun. “Would you rather be a big fish in a small pond? Do you look at going after the masses, or having the benefit of having a heavier saturated country music listener base? Do you look at the convertingchallengeawesomeofpeople to our thethoseForformat?”broadcasters, areamongconsiderations. In PPM and CDM markets, Nashville, Jacksonville, Tulsa, Knoxville, Wichita, Chattanooga and Huntsville post shares at or above 15 (see boxes page 7, 10 and 15). Six smaller markets using Nielsen’s diary methodology raise that 15-to-17 share range by five points or more to 20+. And then there’s the cume argument, in which Houston, Dallas and Chicago are around – or, in Houston’s case, well above – 1 million weekly listeners (unduplicated PPM cume).
Mid-afternoon performances built to each evening’s headliners – Willie Nelson, Tim McGraw, Sam Hunt and Miranda Lambert, respectively. The first moments of Nelson’s Thursday

Where There’s Smokeout There’s Four days and nights of music, craft beer and barbecue showed how the Windy City Smokeout has earned its place as one of country’s premier festivals. The ninth event in 10 years (2020 was lost to the pandemic) took place Thursday through Sunday (8/4-7) outside Chicago’s United Center, revealing a whole-isgreater-than-its-parts magic. “We’ve moved locations twice, and those moves helped us grow,” says organizer Ed Warm. “We moved from a small lot in River North to the Chicago Tribune’s lot on the river, which gave us room to do two stages, increase capacity, and add a lot more barbecue.” Outgrowing that space prompted the move to its current location. “Everyone knows where the United Center is, so that helped us grow as well.”
“Easily Houston,” says Records/Nashville EVP/Promotion & Commercial Strategy Josh Easler. “Both stations like new music and play it, and they have insane ratings and impact on music.” But that’s the radio-centered perspective.

Fans and industry were undeterred by an exceptionally hot weekend, as illustrated by the demand for any kind of air flow Saturday afternoon on the side of the stage. WSIX/Nashville’s Ryan McKiddy thought Audacy/Chicago’s Marci Braun was coming over to greet him. “I’m not here for you,” she quipped. “I’m here for the fan that’s blowing up my crotch right now.” Rain showers Sunday cooled the venue, but not the passion attendees had for the performers and provisions. Braun has seen the growth up close. “What started out small in a downtown Chicago parking lot is now a premiere can’t-miss festival,” she says. “I’m blown away every year by how they make tweaks and improvements. There are so many wonderful things that Ed and the team do – not only for the artists, but front-of-house as well. For example, they have a ton of water bottle filling stations [where] instead of charging $9 for a bottle of water, they’re making sure attendees are taken care of.” Warm attributes that attention to detail for building to this year’s 71,000 attendees across the event’s four days. “Hopefully, [Windy City Smokeout is] getting known for taking care of the artists, our guests, and our staffs,” he says. “Hospitality on every level is what’s most important for us.” –Chuck Aly When The Fun Goes Down: Taking in the Windy City Smokeout vibes Friday (8/5) with Valory’s Tiera Kennedy (c) are (l-r) guitar player Brandon Ellis, the label’s Adam Burnes, Audacy’s Marci Braun, Music Choice’s Jim Murphy, Country Aircheck’s Chuck Aly, Angela Murphy, WIL/St. Louis’ Marty Brooks, Cannon Productions’ Shannon Finnegan, Laurie Kapugi, iHeart’s Jeff Kapugi and the label’s Ashley Sidoti.
performance drew an unmistakable odor as fans helped “Smokeout” live up to its name. Smelled like weed, to put it bluntly. Russell Dickerson closed his Friday set in a Bulls jersey with “R Dizzle” emblazoned on its back. Fans were packed in tight to the GA main floor area in front of a single festival stage and thrust with elevated VIP boxes along the perimeter. Meanwhile, the footprint devoted ample space behind the main floor area for craft breweries and, behind that, booths for top barbecue restaurants from around the nation. Ribs, brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends, sausage, slaw, street corn and other mains and sides were available for prices ranging from $6 to $16 per serving. Attendees were frequently comparing tasting notes and recommendations, leading to lines and sellouts for some of the favored offerings. “As we’ve grown in size, the music, barbecue and beer have all grown at the same time, and that’s intentional,” Warm says. “Getting more space meant we could increase capacity and our talent budget, and that we could host more barbecue teams from around the country. We treat the pitmasters just like we do our musical talent – they are the stars. Our craft beer bar is also something we are proud of – 35 different breweries bring us limited releases, some you can only find at Windy City Smokeout.”

Chart Chat Congratulations to Dylan Scott, RJ Meacham, Mike Rogers and the Curb promotion team on landing “New Truck” at No. 1 this week. The lead track from Scott’s just released Livin’ My Best Life album becomes his third No. 1. An Off The Record convo with Stoney Creek’s Jelly Roll: I am the youngest sibling and – as any youngest will attest to – you are never the one in control of the radio dial. So, from early on, I was exposed to rock, hip hop, rap, R&B, metal, country … everything. I grew up listening to The Rick Walker Show on [Urban WQQK], Dolewite & Scooby on [Urban WUBT], [WKDF] and [WSIX] in Nashville. The first time I ever heard myself on the radio, I was driving down I-65 after leaving a video shoot. I was scanning, and it played on 103.3 [WKDF]. I was having a bad day until then, and wow, did it change after that. It really turned it around. If I were to create and name a genre for myself, I would call it … therapeutic music. I have felt nothing but support and excitement for my country music from my earlier fans. I’d say they pretty much all have followed me through the evolution. When it comes to balancing being a husband and father with being an artist, my rule is family first. Always. That’s rule No. 1. I also involve family in the business – they are out on tour with us right now. (Watch his wife and daughter cheer him on during his Opry debut here) My first Country radio tour has been awesome, honestly. It was cool to meet all the different people. My favorite part was being able to go in and talk to everyone that works at the stations – to meet them and hear all their stories. That was the best part.
