... and the needle. Driven out of Bridgestone Arena by the Nashville Predators’ Stanley Cup run, the 2017 CMT Music Awards made lemonade by winning its timeslot (non-sports) and coming in second overall to the NBA Finals. With the network touting three million simulcast viewers and big social numbers, CMT President Brian Philips has high praise for his team. CA: Watching, I forgot it wasn’t at Bridgestone for a minute. How was the transition? BP: I hope it looked like every other CMT Awards. The level of talent was greater this Brian Philips year than many and the behind-the-scenes story is one of people calmly going about the business of making radical changes. Including the artists. We did a Crossroads the night before with Keith Urban, Earth Wind & Fire and several other acts, just to give ourselves something else to do. Partying late into the night on the eve of the awards with Earth Wind & Fire seemed like the right call. How high was your stress level? Our people had taken care of most of it before we got to show day. Even turning the outdoor stage at the last minute worked out well. By the time of dress rehearsal, I was more assured of a good night going into it than I have been with many past iterations of the show. Attitude is important, especially with something as complex as our awards, but by the time I settled in the truck, people were at peace. There were fewer concerns and fewer glitches than is typical. Quiet Side Of Ell Controversy

CBS Radio KNCI/Sacramento’s ill-advised decision to drop Stoney Creek’s Lindsay Ell from a weekend performance because of her relationship with Premiere and iHeartMedia’s Bobby Bones has become a tale of two stories. One story is consumer-facing, with lots of chatter, moral outrage and social media buzz. The other is industry-facing and sounds largely like crickets.

MY TUNES: MUSIC THAT SHAPED MY LIFE SelecTone’s Steve Wariner discusses his most influential music: 1. Glen Campbell, Indiana State Fair, 1971: He was headlining and the opening act was Jerry Reed. It was basically his Goodtime Hour TV show. I was a sophomore in high school, sitting about 20 rows back. When I saw it I was like, “Oh my god, this is what I want to do, right Steve Wariner here.” I guess you could say it was prophetic. Later on I became so close with everybody on that stage. 2. Chet Atkins’ Hi-Fi In Focus and Chet Atkins Picks On The Beatles: I wore the grooves off those two albums. 3. Ray Price’s San Antonio Rose: It was my dad’s album. It was a tribute to Bob Wills and the album opened up with him talking, which really made an impression on me. I learned to play bass listening to that album. 4. Buck Owens & The Buckaroos, 1964: I saw them at a place called Mockingbird Hill Park in Anderson, Indiana. Man, it was powerful. They knocked me out. Buck was on top of the world. 5. Dottie West: In 1973 I was on a show with Dottie at the Nashville Country Club in Indianapolis. She was the headliner. She heard me playing and singing and hired me that night. That’s why I’m here today. • Highly regarded music you’ve never heard: Eric Johnson has new music out and I haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet. But I hear it’s fantastic. • “Important” music you just don’t get: Opera. It’s not that I don’t appreciate it or respect it. I respect the discipline of it, and the instrument the vocalists have. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Linda Ronstadt’s first album with the Stone Poneys. It takes me back in time. And also Jerry Byrd’s Byrd Of Paradise. He’s a Hawaiian steel guitar player. • Obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Well, I’m sure it’s one of my songs off my new album All Over The Map, “Nashville Spy-Line”! It’s me and Duane Eddy. It could be in any Quentin Tarantino movie – and I wish it would be. It’s definitely not country, but it’s so fun. • One item in your music collection you’d rather not admit to enjoying: Being an old bass player, I’m always buying disco records, where the bass is just phenomenal. So I’ll come right out and say it: I listen to disco.

Quick recap: Ell was scheduled to perform free shows for all three Sacto stations Friday, but KNCI PD Chad Rufer decided not to have her play after learning of her relationship with Bones. Ell tweeted, the Washington Post’s Emily Yahr penned a story and CBS Radio issued an apology, calling the cancellation “a bad decision.” Charges of sexism extended to the Chad Rufer Morning Hangover’s Kurt Bardella calling for Rufer’s firing. Bones devoted a segment on Monday’s show to the situation, alleging he has names and perhaps audio recordings of as many as 13 PDs who refuse to support Ell because of her relationship with him. Late Monday, Ell “broke her silence” to Yahr in a follow-up article that also quoted BBR Music Group EVP Jon Loba. On the industry side, CBS Radio execs are referring inquiries to the corporate PR department, who point to the already issued apology. Behind the scenes, the company is working with Ell and the label to schedule another show, and a source who asked not to be identified says the relationship remains amicable. BBRMG, meanwhile, declined to participate in this story. While KNCI’s move is clearly not a good look, some quietly question whether the situation is just another manifestation of a more familiar industry problem. Will companies support music that is aligned with their competitors through new artist discovery programs, label co-ventures or other exclusive relationships? Do artists, particularly new artists, risk broad-based support by being seeing as radio company X’s pet project? There may be a connection between Bones and the Post’s Yahr, who has written a number of stories about the radio personality over the years. She has also been drawn to controversy, as in a 2015 article about the “fraught state of Country radio” revealed by the erroneous assertion that “stations are pulling Little Big Town’s ‘Girl Crush,’” in which Bones is quoted expressing his outrage. All that aside, if the aim is telling stories, generating controversy and seeking ratings and readers, that Ell is being held back because she’s a woman with a visible personal life is certainly the way to go. If the aim is having radio and label partners working together to advance Ell’s career, the story is quietly patching things up and moving on. –Chuck Aly

WZFC/Starsburg, VA and WXBN/Berryville, VA added Envision’s Collin Raye’s Rewind Country. Impact KQBL/Boise, ID and the rest of the cluster have launched as an Alexa Skill. Google Home will be online soon. The Grand Ole Opry and Chicago White Sox have teamed for Country Music Night presented by Coca-Cola June 23 at Guaranteed Rate Field. Adam Craig will perform an acoustic “Rock the Sox” set before the game. Lady Antebellum and Brad Paisley will perform on NBC TV’s annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. In the euphoria of the moment we had some people in the industry saying they love the MCC and suggest coming back every year, but I don’t know if the crew would wish to again shoehorn this in and still try to make it look big. Early in the process of moving from the Bridgestone, Exec. Producer Margaret Comeaux said, “We can make this awards show work anywhere.” It sounds implausible, but that’s what she and Exec. Prod. John Hamlin did. This wasn’t just one of my favorite nights at CMT, it was one of my favorite weeks. Were you the only folks in Nashville rooting for the Penguins? Sometimes we shoot past that stuff. It’s a national show and

we don’t want to paint it into a Nashville corner, but this year it felt right to celebrate the town. Harnessing that Preds energy and weaving it into the show seemed to engage and please the audience when most times, people in other cities really don’t care. Plus, people were excited to see Keith Urban have a big night. How did the Gregg Allman tribute come together? When he passed we had a lot great music people including artists come to us with meaningful reactions. It was great to know someone like Jason Aldean wanted to find a way to honor him, as did Charles Kelley and Darius Rucker. real Allman flavor. When we realized how stately and majestic it could be, it seemed like a show open to us. The great thing about “Midnight Rider” is the instantly identifiable guitar line and the way it beautifully represents Gregg’s spirit. No bio package needed. Did Charles Esten as host and the Nashville themed open work as expected? Everyone who knows Chip is aware that beyond his dramatic television background, his range extends to a background in improv. He understands music, he’s fast and funny, and has a work ethic unlike some who get wrangled into hosting. One of the most involved and actively engaged hosts with writers and producers I’ve ever seen. The fact he was able to riff about Charles Esteen Nashville in the right way was important. That’s sacred territory for a lot of our fans and he carried it well. Re-watching the show at the office, Cole Swindell’s bit with the humidifier set off the Amazon Echo on my desk. Cole That was absolutely a widespread Swindell problem! (Laughs) I had hundreds of notes from people about that, which was ultimately conceived and executed in a very short period of time. Nobody stopped to think what would happen when he said that, but it had Amazon devices going nuts in houses all over the country. You could have just played

that as a shrewdly executed promotion. Yes, actually, we worked closely on that product placement and were compensated tremendously! No, we were all so focused on getting it done we didn’t anticipate that odd phenomenon. Obviously collaborations were the centerpiece of the show. What stood out to you? Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood was a record setter in terms of going viral, and it’s still doing great numbers [more than a week after the show]. That intensity might have Luke Bryan been a byproduct of and Jason being in a more intimate Derulo venue. We knew in dress rehearsals it was destined to be a highlight. We all had the experience of Earth Wind & Fire the night before. They came in ready and you can always count on Lady A to light it up. Jason Derulo and Luke Bryan had worked together before on CMT, so we knew how good that would be. Jason is becoming a full-time Nashvillian as a result of all the good times he’s had with Luke. Final thoughts? What stuns people who come in from our other networks is how many different things our artists do in the course of the show and the week. So many artists get pulled into three or four different things – a tribute, their song, the comedic open, a Crossroads the night before and all in the midst of CMA Fest. As I saw it play out I thought, “God, we’re working people hard and they all rise to the occasion and don’t complain.” That’s the work ethic of this business. And we’re grateful. This is one I’ll remember fondly. We had a good time and delivered great ratings. Those two things don’t always go together.
