L-evating Chicago: Melissa & Austin What do you get when you combine a local AC morning vet and a witty multi-media Sports personality? Audacy WUSN/ Chicago’s newest morning team, Melissa McGurren and Austin Huff (CAT 5/6). Now more than a month into the Melissa And Austin show, the pair tell Country Aircheck about their backgrounds, how they came together in secret and what their long-term goals are. Spoiler alert: They’re coming for those broadcast award trophies. McGurren and Huff were cautiously optimistic after their first virtual meeting during the interview and hiring process. “When we had good chemistry on the Zoom meeting, it told me we were going to hit it off and that this could really develop and skyrocket once we got in the same room together,” says Huff. McGurren may have been a bit more hesitant, as she admits to “finding his Instagram and watching all his videos” before Austin Huff and the formal introduction. “Once Melissa McGurren we met, what I liked most about him was that he is very down to earth and real, and we get each other’s sense of humor,” she says.

MC: Having gone through the process of figuring out how to do an awards show in this climate last fall, we knew we needed to go on location and, preferably, be outside again. It’s easier to keep people safe and gives you more freedom as opposed to being indoors. Thankfully, there’s not a shortage of beautiful locations in and around Nashville. It was important for us to celebrate the city opening up, too. Having the first TV performance at the new Assembly Hall with Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Bryan and Luke Combs was super thrilling. White Limozeen on top of the Graduate Hotel was so fun. Bonnaroo Farm was exciting, given what that festival means to the music community; those main stage performances were the first ones we shot. Kelsea Ballerini And Harlinsdale Farm is so beautiful. The city of Franklin was really helpful in making that happen. Was the live audience at Bridgestone an adjustment you made? Our plan was always to have an audience, we just didn’t know how many. Viacom’s COVID task force was our guiding body. They were watching everything closely and advising on the precautions we needed to take. As the situation changed from where we started, having that audience was thrilling for all of us, especially the artists. We were actually supposed to be outdoors at Ascend for the live portion but changed venues last minute. We woke up one morning, and the weather wasn’t going in our favor. We called our friends at Bridgestone and asked if they’d have us. They made it happen, and the next day, we went right in. How do you take a set designed for Ascend and Luke Bryan make it work inside at Bridgestone? I would love to be able to tell you it was a grand plan, but honestly, it was a case of the stars aligning. We made all the right decisions along the way that kept the production as adaptable as possible,

which is sort of the name of the game right now when it comes to TV production in general. Can you give an example? Our show has a unique personality, and the set is a huge part of that – the lights coming straight out of the stage, for instance. If we hadn’t gone that direction, things would have been very different. But it was able to look and feel like our set whether it was in Ascend or Bridgestone. CMT’s ongoing commitment to diversity was evident. Any particular elements of that stand out as you look back? From day one, celebrating diversity and inclusion was something we wanted to accomplish. I can’t point to one moment that was pivotal, because it is a constant thread. We just opened it up and let it breathe. Obviously, Leslie Fram’s leadership in that area is the guiding star. As a production team, we were fortunate to find that amazing interview with Linda Martell, and I don’t think there’s a more powerful way to tell someone’s story than to hear it in their own words. Were there any behind-the-scenes challenges? Producing outdoor performances in a Tennessee spring – as beautiful as it is – was unpredictable at best. We had a lot of rain, and I don’t know that I’ve seen more tick spray in my life. We just leaned into it with the goal of making each performance fit within what the audience has come to expect of this show. And, of course, it starts and ends with the talent on the stage. The artists deliver every time, and that’s what people want to see and hear. –Chuck Aly

Songwriters are Drew Parker, Robert Williford and Combs. Kudos to Michael Chase and the Warner/WAR crew on scoring 95 adds for Zac Brown Band’s “Same Boat.” This is the largest add week in the band’s history, their previous best was 74 for “The Wind” on June 11, 2012.

OFF THE RECORD An Off The Record conversation with iHeartMedia WBWL/Boston afternoon personality Colton Bradford: I grew up listening to iHeartMedia WKSJ/ Mobile, AL and quite literally walked up to PD Bill Black at an event for high school students and told him he was going to hire me one day. I worked for concert tickets until I finally landed my high school dream job ... weekend board op. Bill, Dan Brennan, Shelby Mitchell and Steve Powers were always in my corner when COLTON I was starting out. I could still pick up the phone, BRADFORD ask them tough questions and they would do their best to shoot me straight. Since moving to Boston, I’ve found myself leaning on Ginny Brophey, Lance Houston and Dylan Sprague. And, I have a few friends in the record industry who have always been in my corner. My favorite song on the radio in any format is “Déjà Vu” by Olivia Rodrigo. It’s an absolute bop, and I’d bet my savings she’s the next big thing. My five most influential artists, songs, albums or concerts are: 5. The Chicks. My mom burned the Wide Open Spaces cassette tape into her red Pontiac Grand Prix. That is my first memory of being a country music fan. 4. Justin Timberlake, specifically the Justified album. I spent many a night as a chubby fifth grader practicing my dance moves to “Like I Love You” hoping I wouldn’t wake up my family. I wanted to be him when I grew up. Maybe I still do ... 3. Aretha Franklin. In high school, when I wasn’t working for concert tickets at ‘KSJ, I waited tables at a pizza parlor that played oldies. That’s where I discovered her genius. If you’re ever bored, a fun project is to listen to her body of work from start to finish and note how the music changes sonically as America changed through the years. 2. Taylor Swift. Because ... Taylor Swift. 1. Dolly Parton. Growing up, my grandmother sang old Dolly, Willie Nelson and Kenny Rogers songs constantly. My home now has a lot of Dolly nods only a true fan would recognize – lyrics, jokes and album art. I try to live my life by the “WWDD?” mantra, and you should, too. The pandemic altered my perspective on priorities and problems. I can much more clearly zoom (ha!) in and out on problems, both personally and professionally, to see if they really deserve the attention and energy I’m giving them. Listen, I love people. I do. However, I want y’all to stay six feet away from me at the grocery store for life. A few months ago, I created a “secret” TikTok account to share my thoughts and perspectives on things happening in the news or in my life. I initially wasn’t going to use it too often, but it’s grown into something that now isn’t so secret. I get DMs from listeners all over the country streaming The Bull. TikTok, ya don’t stop! I’m currently binge-watching The Mosquito Coast on AppleTV. It was a book that became an ‘80s movie starring Harrison Ford that is now being revisited as a series starring Justin Theroux. Neither has Country radio experience, but they do have personal connections to the genre. During her more than 25 years at crosstown Hubbard AC WTMX, McGurren kept WUSN as a preset on her car stereo. “I may not have had [Country radio] in my work life day-to-day, but I had it in my personal life,” she notes. “We also played country crossovers – Dan + Shay, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, for example – so I have always been familiar with the music.” Huff, meanwhile, calls Nashville home and previously worked for both Cumulus and Cromwell in the

market. He cites a love of the music and the country lifestyle, and a familiarity with the artists and songwriters as a driving force behind his interest in the WUSN job. Both were keenly aware of WUSN’s legacy prior to accepting their new jobs. “US99 transcends the dial and the city it’s in,” says Huff. “Of course I’d want to work for a station as historic as this one!” Early in the interview process, they also shared a mutual appreciation for the “no BS” style of RVP/PD Tim Roberts and Regional Brand Mgr. Marci Braun. “There was an instant familiarity, trust and understanding that made this opportunity feel like a fit,” explains McGurren. Huff concurs, adding, “We just really like these people, and they seem to like us, too! Everyone we’ve met has been insanely nice, and there’s a great energy with this team.” After being offered the job, McGurren and Huff began working with Braun in secret to put the show together and build out a plan. While Huff is thrilled to be in a vibrant sports city like Chicago, he’s equally excited to be co-hosting a morning show on Country radio, where he can talk about his other passions – including the brand-new season of The Bachelorette. “Austin knows everything about sports and can definitely help me out there, but he’s also a total pop culture junkie and knows everything about what’s happening in Hollywood,” says McGurren. Jokes Huff, “Yeah, and on days when Melissa thinks Brett Favre is still the quarterback for the Packers, I get to correct her.” The introduction to the format – and the Country radio family – has already been a positive experience. “I’ve been in this market for so long, I have listeners following me over,” notes McGurren. “They’re finding they like the music, but they also like the banter we have. They’re giving the format a shot because of that.” Huff adds, “And we couldn’t be launching at a better time since Country radio is the soundtrack of the summer.” Both noted the warm welcome from the WUSN fanbase as an early encouragement, and they’re also appreciative of the reception from industry pros who have reached out via email or social media. Like any new couple only a few serious dates in, McGurren and Huff are still getting to know each other. She knows he loves Waffle House, and he knows she will always need help with the printer. When asked to describe one another, McGurren dubbed Huff feisty, sarcastic and lovable , while Huff calls McGurren caring, driven and successful. “He’s a great husband, and I love that he’s always lifting up his wife,” says McGurren. Huff replies,

“And you’re always lifting up the city. So much so that listeners are switching formats to follow you, and they’re willing to give me a chance just because I’m sitting next to you.” As they build rapport, McGurren and Huff are focused on authenticity. “I don’t want it to sound fake,” emphasizes McGurren. “And, it’s not always going to be happy and uplifting, but finding the balance and having real discussions about what is happening in the world is important, because we want to bond with our listeners.” Adds Huff, “Creating a community is key. When you’re listening to our show, we want you to feel like you are part of something bigger. This is going to be a family.” Face-to-face relationships are also paramount to the show’s strategy. As McGurren says, “Shaking hands and kissing babies – or at least, bumping elbows” as soon as possible. They credit Braun for being proactive in introducing them to record reps and artists en masse. “We’ve already had some amazing opportunities to talk to artists, and it’s been incredible to see how down to earth, welcoming and open they have been,” says McGurren. Huff, who has developed relationships with artists during his time living in Nashville and via his Korked Bats sports content empire, says he’s excited to interview Ryan Hurd, Russell Dickerson, Lee Brice and Brett Young. “I’m not saying I only like guys who played sports, I just happen to know a bunch of guys who did, and I’ve always connected easily with those guys,” he says. Like many athletes, Melissa And Austin have already begun setting five- and 10-year goals. “Right after I got the gig, I told my best friend from Nashville, and he sent a screen shot of the recent ACM Radio Award winners,” says Huff. “I said right then, ‘Okay, there’s the goal. This is like the Heisman Trophy of Country radio.’” McGurren voices a deliberate approach. “I have more of a baby-step focus,” she says. “I just want to make great radio and have a positive impact in our community.
