OFF THE RECORD
Warner/WMN’s Drew Parker goes Off (The Record):
Honestly, I originally wanted someone I grew up listening to to record “King Of Country Music” with me. But one day, I was driving down the road listening to mixes and the idea of asking my wife [Mallory] just fell in my life. I thought about it for two seconds and knew I had to ask her. I met my wife for the first time the first night she ever walked into a bar. I was onstage singing and she was there with some friends. We’ve been together ever since and she has supported my dream from that day on.
It is extremely tough to balance being a husband and father with my career, but I do everything I can to be present. Whether that means not getting much sleep so I can catch an early flight to get back home before the bus, or just waking up to cook breakfast with Harley before I hit the road. I’ve also learned that time is priceless. And thank God for FaceTime. I love getting songs recorded by other artists. Sometimes that is my first goal when writing. If it turns into something super personal I can’t live without, that’s when I know it’s for me. There I times I wish I had kept “Homemade” to put on my record. Who knows ... one day I still might. I’m so thankful for that song and Jake recording it. It was my first No. 1 and it will always be special.
I’m a naturally quiet and reserved person, but I learned quickly how to get out of my comfort zone. Whether it’s networking or sitting in the writers room, treat everyone like you’d want to be treated. I’ll never forget someone telling me, “The toes you step on today may be connected to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow.”
So much has changed since I recorded the While You’re Gone EP. I’m a dad now. I’ve matured in what I want to say and sing ever since then. I’ve honed in on what my sound as an artist is.
At The End Of The Dirt Road has something for everyone. I love “King of Country Music” for the depth of the lyric; “I’ll Love You Longer” for the melody; “My Baby Does” and “At The End Of The Dirt Road” for the message; “Middle Of Nowhere Class” for the beer drinking good time; and “She’s On A Roll” for proving to myself I could write and do something different.
The rest of 2023 is shows, shows, shows. I enjoy getting on the road and meeting the people who have supported me along the way! To be able to drive hours away and hundreds of people show up and make me feel right at home is special. Also, I’m still writing a ton and hope to get some more songs cut and maybe record some myself. It’s always a work in progress.

Garth Reigns At Caesars
Country Music Hall of Famer Garth Brooks has completed the second weekend of his Garth Brooks/Plus One residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and Country Aircheck deserter freelancer Monta Vaden was in attendance.
“Signage is present throughout Caesars Palace, and the overhead speakers regularly rotate through Garth’s hits in the hotel, casino and restaurants,” shares Vaden, who stayed on-property for three days. A Brooks pop-up store is also open inside Caesars on show days. Show attendees are given VIP lanyards and golden tickets with QR codes. One code gifts the attendees with six free months of TuneIn premium (a nod to Brooks’ impending launch of Sevens Radio Network); the second allows downloads of professional photos from the night’s show. The audience is required to seal their phones in Yondr cases during the performance.
“I enjoyed the experience of the phone-free show, and I wasn’t worried about my view from the balcony being restricted by screens in front of my face,” shares Vaden. “Being phone-free also meant I had to bring in paper and pen to take notes, but it was worth it.”
Brooks took the stage in a hoodie, sneakers and baseball cap at an unknown time (“no phones!”) Opening with just an acoustic guitar, he “tested the room” with a quick run-through of Bob Seger’s “Against The Wind” and Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes.”
“Immediately after, Garth launched into ‘Rodeo’ as the curtain came up revealing his full band,” says Vaden.
Storytelling was a big part of the show, with tales
ranging from Brooks’ Hall induction to how he was influenced by Seger, James Taylor, Billy Joel, George Strait and others. He also wove a narrative that included his own hits – “Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old),” “The River,” “That Summer,” “The Thunder Rolls,” and “Callin’ Baton Rouge” – with those of his heroes. Midway through the first half of the set, he said, “This is the reason I made sure you don’t have a phone tonight; I’m about to do something stupid,” before playing a song he recently wrote entitled “Pleasure In The Pain.”
Trisha Yearwood joined for the “Plus One” portion of the evening, and the two acknowledged former MCA/Nashville Chairman Bruce Hinton, who was in attendance. Brooks pointed out that Hinton signed Yearwood to her first record deal. Brooks and Yearwood collaborated on “Shallow” and George Jones and Tammy Wynette’s “Golden Ring” before Yearwood shared “Walkaway Joe” and “She’s In Love With The Boy.”
Brooks played an Oklahoma swing rendition of “Happy Birthday” for an attendee and took an anniversary couple’s request for “To Make You Feel My Love.” Introducing the band, he offered the spotlight to Gordon Kennedy, who performed his Grammy Song of the Year composition “Change The World,” made famous by Eric Clapton.
A medley of Strait hits and a cover of “Fishin’ In The Dark” led to additional audience requests for “The Red Strokes” and “Ain’t Goin’ Down (‘Til The Sun Comes Up)” before Brooks closed in his traditional manner with “The Dance.” After a short break, Brooks returned to the stage for an additional request – “Ireland” – as well as Joel’s “Piano Man” and his own “Friends In Low Places.”
Though he dropped his guitar to the ground and began to walk off stage once more, Brooks noticed a sign in the audience reading, “If Tomorrow Never Comes, we got to check Garth off the bucket list. #CancerSucks.” Brooks told the young woman he would like to fly her out to one of his 2024 residency shows. “But you have to pick a show a year or more away, and that means you have to keep fighting,” he said, before performing the song. When he finished, Brooks handed the guitar he had been playing the entire night to the crying woman.
“This show concept is a mix of the previous Vegas residency and the arena shows from the post-retirement era, but in an intimate theater setting where the audience can easily interact with Brooks throughout the night,” remarks Vaden. “While I’ve seen Garth in multiple settings, as I’m sure many in our industry have, this may my favorite.” Dates for 2023 are sold out, but 18 new shows have been added for 2024 ( CAT 5/18 ); details here

Songwriters are John Byron, Ashley Gorley, Jacob Kasher Hindlin and Ryan Vojtesak
Kudos to Kris Lamb and the Big Machine crew on racking up 77 adds for Brian Kelley’s solo debut “See You Next Summer.” This is the first time in Big Machine history an artist’s debut release has topped the CA/MB Add Board.

Road Goes On Forever: US101 @ 40
(continued from page 1)
I worked for ABC and RCA Records for 12 years and came back home to Chattanooga to get away from the craziness. I heard US101 and thought it
was something special, I wanted to be a part of it. I wound up doing traffic reports in the afternoons with David Earl and we really hit it off.
Greg Mozingo (PD 1990-91): Sammy called me to join US101 in 1990. Great things were already happening, and Hughes left crosstown Top 40 WSKZ for less money because he believed in our vision. Also, there was a young, hardworking kid roaming the halls named Clay.
Clay Hunnicutt (PD 1997-99; OM 2000-03): I still remember a family telling David & Dex they couldn’t afford a wheelchair for their child, and on the spur of the moment they raised enough money in an hour to buy one. Jon Anthony, [former afternoon co-host] Jack Cole, David Earl Hughes and [former morning co-host] Benjamin “Bearman” Martin were huge personalities and a big part of the station, but are no longer with us. US101 is a living, breathing entity. It doesn’t matter who the PD is – you hand the baton off to the next person.
SG: When we moved to the current studios, Clay and I took the center of the old break room floor and moved it to the new building. Most of the great ideas came from the hallways and the break rooms ... from the gathering of people. Radio’s missing that today.
Gator Harrison (PD 2010-16): There are stories of how Randy Owen would drive to Chattanooga from Fort Payne, AL because it had the nearest BMW dealership. He’d drop his car off, have them drive him to the station, and he’d hang out in the break room while he was getting his car worked on. And talk about a radio station that sees the vision and need for St. Jude –US101 does it with a heart level that’s unmatched. Whether it’s Radiothons or the Heart Strings for Hope benefit concert, we did a lot of real life

Justin Cole (PD 2016-present): Growing up in western North Carolina, I would visit my cousin in Murphy and the station was massive there, an hour-and-a-half away from Chattanooga. Before the internet, US101 was how country music was exposed in a very large part of Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina.
CH: Sammy never accepted mediocrity. We were in it because we loved making great radio. Everything mattered. When I went to WSIX or launched the Bull [WUBL] in Atlanta, US101’s imprints were on those stations.
GH: If you can find people who don’t feel like it’s a job, and there’s no other job on the planet they want to do, that’s when it’s special. That’s how US101’s had the success it’s had.
JC: I always loved how ‘real’ it felt and how community-oriented the station was – more so than any station I’ve ever worked for.
Justin Cole
SG: One time I got a call from a nun who said, “I want to thank you.” She was making a trip in a van with a group of orphans and had car trouble. David Earl saw them, called a friend of his who was a mechanic, and he took care of this nun and these kids. He never said a word about it. Our staff were those kinds of people.
BP: Somebody asked me how it was to work for Sammy. I said he’s the worst boss I ever had, and he’s also the best boss I ever had. Nobody ever kicked my ass harder than Sammy, and nobody ever picked me up better than him.
BP: It boils down to leadership and having a good team. I hope US101 goes on forever.
SG: The success of that radio station wasn’t pulled off by one or two people; it was a collective effort over the years. Not everybody will be able to tell you the name of their favorite song, but they will remember something that touched their lives. What an incredible radio station it was and still is.
