Web 3 & NFTs & AI: Oh My
Well, howdy y’all. This is your old pal Chuck Aly bringing you the scoop on the latest tech trends straight from CRS 2023! Now, I know y’all are probably wondering what all this talk about “Web3,” “NFTs,” “AI,” and the “Metaverse” is all about, but let me tell you, it’s beyond the hype.
That’s the opening of the fifth pass ChatGPT-3 took at writing a recap of the CRS panel “Web3, NFTs, AI and the Metaverse – Beyond The Hype.” The session sought to bring attendees up to speed on potentially disruptive technologies. While informative and important as a session, at least one aspect of the technology – AI in its current chatbot form (large language models) – isn’t quite beyond the hype. Yet. But more on that later.
Moderator Noah Itman, CRO for Digital Music News, opened by seeking definitions. Calling Web3 “a decentralized network of technologies,” Pex VP/Product Chris McMurtry said, “You’ll hear us talk about blockchain. You’ll hear us talk about NFTs. But ... instead of there being individual local owners, there is a shared ownership amongst the internet.” Defining blockchain, VNUE President/CEO Zach Blair said, “If you are doing a transaction with your bank, the bank ... is a centralized data store with one authority. [Blockchain] adds a level of trust, [because] you have multiple nodes involved in a transaction.”
iHeartMedia CCO Rahul Sabnis described the Metaverse not as a destination, but as a way of thinking. “Anytime you have a way of representing yourself in a space, that can be a metaverse type object,” he said, pointing to video games. “[Consider] how many times the next generation cares about the way they appear in those spaces even more so than they do in some of the real world.” He pointed to a Charlie Puth show in Metaverse space iHeartLand that was “equivalent to selling out 50 Madison Square Gardens.”
VBO Tickets President/Co-Founder David Boehme admitted the technologies are still in their infancy. “It’s not like this is completely taking over the world,” he said. “We’re investigating where can these technologies be used, and there are also pros and cons, but it is a very exciting time.”
Bot & Told: The bulk of the discussion centered on AI, particularly in content creation and rights issues.

How does one open an email to the Rolling Stones? Robert Deaton, producer of the recently released Stoned Cold Country: A 60th Anniversary Tribute, spent three weeks trying to come up with his next line. “We didn’t have to get permission, but we wanted it,” he says. “This is an iconic band with a great catalog; you just don’t do something like this without their blessing.”
More widely known for executive producing television shows including the CMA Awards and New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash, Deaton and BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch broached the idea four years ago. With recording slated for early 2022, Deaton was being asked if he’d sent the email, as requested by the band’s

management. “I landed on, ‘Greetings from Nashville, one of the last places in the world where we still play real instruments,’” Deaton says. “I explained the overall arc and artists I envisioned. Once I got the greenlight, we were off to the races.”
The project offers a mix of stalwart country artists including Eric Church, Brooks & Dunn, Zac Brown Band; newcomers including Elvie Shane, Jimmie Allen and The War & Treaty; and outliers including Koe Wetzel, Marcus King and Steve Earle. “I like doing things people might overlook, but once they’re done seem like a no-brainer,” Deaton says. “And what I thought had been overlooked is the influence the Stones have had on our artists in the period of time in which they were really writing songs with a country melodic structure.” Titles include “Satisfaction,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Paint It Black” and “Gimme Shelter.”
BMG’s support was significant in owning publishing rights to much of the Stones’ catalog, and in the company’s international reach. “They view this as a worldwide release,” Deaton says. “There’s a lot of emphasis in marketing and promotion in Europe, but domestically we’ve had a lot of support from SiriusXM, Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Pandora and Country radio, as well. I’ve heard of different markets playing certain selections. And Little Big Town are doing a performance on the Today Show to talk about the project.” (Watch here.)
Not surprisingly, Deaton filmed the entire recording process for a documentary being considered for streaming or theatrical release in the next few months. “The documentary is a connector to the reverence for the Stones, but it’s also a behind-the-scenes look into how Nashville musicians and artists work in the studio,” Deaton explains. “The musicians here are the greatest in the world. You don’t often get to see the process this way.”
Speaking to process, Deaton finds producing an album isn’t all that different a mindset than producing an awards show. “The two are incredibly close,” he says. “In any project, I don’t like to wing it. I like to prepare. I don’t think it’s fair to sit down with an artist and say, ‘What do you want to do?’ The best performances come from collaboration. I will come in with my idea of who the artist is, what their brand is and what I think might work. That doesn’t mean we do that idea, but it’s a starting point. It gives the artist something to work off of. I did the same thing with these songs. The music is first.”

Chart Chat
Congratulations to Bailey Zimmerman, Kristen Williams, Anna Cage, Tom Martens, Stephanie Hagerty and the Warner/WEA promotion team on taking Zimmerman’s “Rock And A Hard Place” to No. 1, making his second single his second chart-topper. With 9,397 spins, Zimmerman sets a record for most spins in a chart week, eclipsing the previous mark of 9,302 set by Luke Combs’ “When It Rains It Pours” in Oct. 2017. Songwriters are Heath Warren, Jacob Hackworth and Jet Harvey
Bailey
And kudos to Jimmy Rector and the EMI Nashville crew on notching 80 adds for Brother Osborne’s “Nobody’s Nobody” to top this week’s Add Board. This is the largest add week in the duo’s history, topping their previous high of 65 with “Shoot Me Straight” in Jan. 2018.
Four new reporters join the panel effective with this week’s chart: KXBG/Ft. Collins (iHeartMedia), WCKT/Ft. Myers (iHeartMedia), KBAY/San Jose (Alpha) and KVOO/Tulsa (Griffin). Concurrently, WHEL/Ft. Myers and KTGX/Tulsa are no longer reporters.
The Activator Chart becomes fully monitored with this week’s chart as 15 stations that previously reported playlists have been moved to monitored status. Additionally, seven new reporters join the panel this week (CAW 3/13). Leaving the panel are KAFF/Flagstaff, AZ; KXDD/ Yakima, WA; KRWQ/Medford, OR; WOVK/Wheeling, WV and

OFF THE RECORD
KKBQ/Houston’s Lauren “Lo” Sessions goes Off (The Record):
I grew up in South Florida, so there were I listened to a lot of legendary stations. [Hip Hop/R&B WEDR, Top 40 WPOW and Top 40 WHYI/Miami and Hot AC WRMF and thenAlternative WPBZ/West Palm Beach] (RIP Bake Sale) were staples in my upbringing.
One personality I love and idolize to this day is Lucy Lopez. She has since moved on from “radio,” but her personality will always be infectious. She’s always been her authentic self, and I admire that.
LAUREN “LO” SESSIONS
After interning for two semesters with [Top 40 WFLZ/Tampa], I was hired part-time on-air. My first air shift was the overnight mix show Club 933 Interactive. I’d board-op the club gig before, then host the mix show live from 1-3am. I’ve come a long way!
If I could talk to the me at that first job, I would say, “Keep doing what you’re doing! The constant grind will pay off more than you know. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard … but it also helps that you’re talented. Don’t ever let doubt set in, because you’ve got some amazing things to look forward to if you just keep pushing. Also, I love you, and I’m proud of you.”
I’ve had some incredible people in my corner over the years. I would say Jeff Daly and Josh Foreman (Rat and Puff) have been there from the beginning. Then, I have my Randis – Randi West and Randi P’Pool. Most recently, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with the MIW Mentorship Program and have meet some incredible women. Corinne Baldassano has been a God send this last year. I honestly don’t know how I would’ve navigated without her.
So many things, positive or negative, can be considered a lesson. One thing I’ve tried to do in my career is approach every situation with understanding and kindness, even if the person on the other side isn’t doing the same. People won’t always remember what you did or what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel. Lead with kindness and grace, always.
Accessibility to artists has been the biggest difference between Country and other formats. Whether the artist is a veteran in the industry or still up and coming, they’re more than willing to meet a fan or have a conversation with members of the radio station.
I have a serious girl crush on Lainey Wilson. It’s been so cool to watch her stardom skyrocket this last year. “Cowgirls” off of Morgan Wallen’s new album is also on repeat right now.

Itman went straight for copyright issues around songwriting. “AI is only as smart as what it’s heard,” replied SongVest Founder/CEO Sean Peace “So, it’s not really composing anything new. It’s taking bits and pieces of things ... and mashing that together. [Can you imagine] what the copyright complications will be when that happens?”
The notion of chatbots supplanting internet search was also addressed as problematic, with Sabnis noting Bing’s service gives search replies in natural language, rather than a list of links. “I’m not saying it’s bad ... they do actually source the places,” he said. “But, we’re also giving up something in that process, because we’re all moving really fast ... I’m a pretty advanced user, [but] in the hands of a 16-year-old, that’s gospel, whatever that answer is.”
Itman closed with the following question: “If you had one technology to tell everybody in this room, ‘Learn it, learn it now,’ what would it be?” The panelists generally agreed on AI chatbots. “Everything is going to be AI-powered from here,” Sabnis said. “Learn it, get good at it, and be comfortable with it. Don’t be afraid of it.”
Speak Impediment: Hence this story’s opening paragraph, which ChatGPT-3 produced from the following prompt: “Can you write a 300word recap of ‘Web3, NFTs, AI and the Metaverse – Beyond The Hype’

from CRS 2023 in the style of Country Aircheck’s Chuck Aly?”
That prompt was one of dozens attempted. The bot was asked if it could transcribe the session’s audio and said it could. But it did not ... or could not. Provided an uploaded transcription of the session and prompted to write a recap including quotes, it returned boilerplate language about Web3 and NFTs, with no quotes.
I apologize for the mistake in my previous message. You are correct, I did access the Google Docs document you provided earlier. Here are some quotes from the transcription that I believe would be interesting to include in the recap: “Country music has always been about telling stories, and as long as there are stories to tell, the genre will continue to thrive.” –Artist. “It’s important for us to recognize the impact that streaming has had on the industry and to adapt to the changing landscape.” –Executive. “We need to make sure that artists and songwriters are fairly compensated for their work, whether it’s through streaming revenue or other means.” –Producer.
Who’s Bot, JR? Asked to write a recap based on other reporting on the session – basically plagiarism – ChatGPT-3 again returned boilerplate info that was not specific to the panel. Moving on to the more recently launched ChatGPT-4, replies got more interesting.
Opening paragraph: The highly anticipated CRS 2023 panel on “Web3, NFTs, AI and the Metaverse – Beyond The Hype” did not disappoint. Moderated by industry veteran, J.R. Schumann, the panel included experts from various industries who provided valuable insights into the future of the digital world.
Closing paragraph: Overall, the panelists agreed that these technologies and concepts are not just hype, but will be transformative for the music industry and beyond. As Schumann aptly put it, “The future is not just coming, it’s here.”
Of note, Schumann didn’t moderate or speak at CRS 2023. “I’ve said something similar to that in the past, but I don’t remember where or when,” the real J.R. Schumann tells Country Aircheck. “That is bizarre. But also, I’m not wrong,” he laughs.
Pushed further, ChatGPT-4 eventually admitted, “My training data only goes up until 2021, and I don’t have access to real-time information.” Provided with key quotes, the bot did return a reasonable recap, though that regurgitation of copy – while somewhat interesting – didn’t resemble anything close to the intelligence needed to meaningfully understand and frame an event. Nor did it save any time. But as Fred Jacobs – the real Fred Jacobs –noted in his CRS “Fred Talk,” the current version of this technology is “the worst it’s ever going to be.”

New CouNtry AirCheCk/MediAbAse reporter weights
These are the new weights for Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country Reporters for both the Published and the Activator panels, based on audience figures from Nielsen. Weights for stations in PPM markets use a three-month average of September-October-November 2022
AQH Persons. The Fall 2022 AQH Persons figure is used for CDM/diary markets. The weights are calculated using this formula: Market rank is multiplied by 10 and then added to the station’s AQH Persons. A station’s
weight is determined by dividing that adjusted AQH by the leading Country station’s adjusted AQH. For this period, that station is KKBQ/ Houston with an adjusted AQH of 15,660. For Activator weights, that station is WACO/Waco, TX with an adjusted AQH of 6,100. Station Weight = (Market rank X 10) divided by 15,660 (6,100 for Activator stations.) These new weights are effective with this week’s Country Aircheck/Mediabase Country chart.
